this monday morning. i'm frances rivera. this morning the trump administration is playing defense. sally yates the former deputy attorney general and one time acting a.g. is set to give her bombshell testimony before congress rebuking the white house on the secretive details that led to then national security admizer michael flynn's resignation. there are continuing questions on what if any coordination the trump team may have had with russian operatives. for more we're join by tracie potts. what revelations are we expecting from yates this morning? >> sally yates said she warned the white house, the white house said she gave them a head's up and discrepancies or possible discrepancies but they said she warned them that then national security adviser mike flynn could be blackmail ord compromised by russia because he wasn't being forthcoming about his meetings and interactions with the russians including with the russian ambassador. he ended up getting fired because the vice president went public saying one thing when it turned out flynn did meet with the russian ambassador.

now we are at the point where congress is investigating and the senate wants to know what sally yates told the white housing when and who at the white house knew there were complications with mike flynn before he was fired. she was fired ten days into the infancy of this trump transition, this trump white house, because of the travel ban and refusing to enforce the travel ban, but today the focus is going to be russia. today republicans will try to say that she is politicizing whole thing, if it was a big deal she should have come to them sooner and we're hearing from a former clinton spokesman tweeting that the white house plans to smear sally yates as a democratic operative saying she was a non-political career doj attorney for two decades. the senate judiciary panel will hear from her today. >> we'll see how things heated get from that testimony. thank you. certainly a busy weekend for

the trump administration with members of the president's team fanning out to defend the house gop health care bill. just days after its passage. the president himself urging senate republicans to back the bill. that's despite the months long journey it would take to get through the upper chamber. skeptical senate republicans took to the air waves to distance themselves from the president's plan. nbc's kelly o'donnell has our report. >> reporter: though the president stayed out of public view at his new jersey estate for nearly three days his team was on television. pushing for more action on health care. >> we also believe that it's up to the senate, if there are improvements to be made, to make those improvements. >> reporter: visible on twitter the president pressured his own party. republican senators will not let the american people down. obamacare, the president declared, was a lie and it is dead. a very different reaction at town hall meetings. >> throw him out! >> reporter: where constituents vented and booed.

idaho republican congressman are all labrador who made this claim. >> nobody dies because they don't have access to health care. >> reporter: but with concerns about coverage for those with pre-existing conditions, on "meet the press" secretary tom price said most americans would not see a change. >> if you have medicare, if you have medicaid, insurance through the va or tricare or through your employer none of this affects you in the pre-existing illness or condition discussion we're having. >> reporter: but democratic senator dianne feinstein says rushing is dangerous. >> i'm worried that in the rush to judgment we create a major health care problem for people. >> that was kelly owe dodge reporting. and when it comes to health care, even former president obama is intervening. last night in boston he received their prestigious john f. kennedy profile and courage award. the nation's 44th president challenged congress to protect his signature

legislation and protect those most in need. >> i hope current members of congress recall that it actually doesn't take a lot of courage to aid those who are already powerful, already comfortable, already influential, but it does require some courage to champion the vulnerable and the sick and the infirmed. i hope they understand that courage means not simply doing what is politically expedient but doing what they believe deep in their hearts is right. to a presidential election overseas now. the right wing populist movement that saw britain leave the european union and usher president trump into the white house hit a blockade in france yesterday. voters overwhelmingly elected independent emmanuel macron to the presidency, rebuking the nationalism and anti-immigrant

sentiment championed by his opponent. matt bradley is in paris for us, and how are voters there waking up this morning? >> reporter: thank, frances. as you mentioned this was a massive pe pudsation -- repudiation not just for for ma rin le pen. i was just in marseille last week and folks were saying that a lot of the racism, division, will persist even after they see the back of marine le pen. and indeed, her party, still got about 35 to 36%. that was twice as much or more than twice as much as her father got in 2002 when he shocked france making it into the second round. so it seems as though her party will be persisting and going into these parliamentary elections next. those elections, they're happening next month, they're going to determine whether macron, this very young president, and his very

young political party, which was just established a few months ago, will enjoy expansive political power in france or be obliged to share it. but before then, the media here is crowing. the center right paper, this is a play on en marche, the name of macron's political party and la parisian. 39 years and president. and here is the left wing daily, well played. with a picture of macron and on the back, the back of marine le pen. well done. back do you. >> matt bradley in paris, thank you. boston police are investigating the brutal murder of two doctors engaged to be married. and found slain in their penthouse apartment. police found the bodies of dr. richard field and lin na bolanos after responding to a call about an armed man in the building. they were reportedly found with

their throats slit and hands tied. police say the suspect shot at them when they arrived on scene, returned fire injuring the man taken to the hospital. police don't know the motive for the alleged murders but believe it was not random. wildfires and flooding forcing hundred from their homes this weekend. in georgia smoke filled the skies as at least 500 first responders worked to put out a massive wildfire. more than 135,000 acres have burned so far. at least 75 homes were evacuated. and over 700 residents in the canadian province of quebec had to evacuate after historic flooding. cities like montreal are under a state of emergency. it continues to feel like early spring in much of the country. here's bill karins asking if there's any relief in sight feeling like fall. >> middle of the country was warm this weekend and both coasts rainy and chilly. how about the rain storm that swung through in the last 24 hours. we still have the heavy rain moving from los angeles through san diego. we even had a little bit of snow

korea. bringing the total to four. state media confirmed the detention of kim hak song on sunday. for more we turn to janis mackey frayer. what do we know about kim and the reason why he was detained? >> kim hak song is said to be about 55 years old, arrested and charged with crimes of hostility against the state. we're given to details from the state news agency on what that exactly means or what the focus of the investigation is. kim had been teaching at the pyongyang university of science and technology. he was not a professor who taught students in the classroom, rather he was an instructor of agriculture who was working at the experimental farm at the university. this, of course, brings to four the number of americans that are being held and just two weeks ago, tony kim also teaching at that same university was detained on similar charges as he was trying to leave the country. so it now turns the attention to

the question of whether kim jong-un is playing hostage diplomacy, whether he's detaining americans to initiate some sort of conversation or dialog with washington where the trump administration would feel compelled to send a high-level envoy to pyongyang to resolve the situation. this, of course, coming at a time of extreme tension between the u.s. and north korea. so time will tell which direction it could take. frances? >> certainly the case. nbc's janis mackey frayer, thank you. some other headlines we're following this morning. texas governor greg abot sound a law banning sank ware cities. it allows police to ask about the status of anyone they detain and compel sheriffs to cooperate with immigration authorities. it takes effect september 1st. ten people shot two fatally in chicago. the victims at a memorial for earlier in the day.

emoon newell macron's victory in the france election. landon dowdy is here to fill us in. >> good morning. stock futures pointing to a lower open on wall street after sunday's wildly anticipated win by emmanuel macron and the french presidential election. u.s. markets ending last week a bit higher than where they started and still trading in a narrow range. the nasdaq and s&p s&p closing at record highs on friday, telecoms, materials and energy stocks leading friday's gains and ibm the big drag on the dow after warren buffet told cnbc he was kigts his investment in the tech giant about a third. talk of a mega merger between two of america's largest local tv station owners reuters reporting st. clair broadcast group to buy tribune media for almost $4 billion. a deal announcement could come as soon as today. this just weeks after a vote by the federal communications commission to ease some restrictions on tv mergers.
