start your monday off with a live look at san francisco. c-- good morning, bay area. we start off your monday with a live look at san francisco. the transamerica pyramid there, and a little bit of cloud cover in the background. clear, and not that clear, apparently. cool, as you step out the door this morning. today in the bay starts now. good morning. thank you fort joining us on ths monday. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. hope everybody had a great weekend. now's time to start the work week, and the nice, nice weather. >> going to be really nice. it has been cool, and we start off with fog, mist, and drizzle in san francisco. elsewhere, clear skies, and we start out with mild weather. looking now at 53 degrees in the south bay. and in the trival e, 54. peninsula, 52. east bay also at 52 degrees.

upper 40s for the north2íñ bay. a lot of sunshine today. and slightly warmer temperatures with the south bay topping out in the upper 70s and 80s for the north bay. we'll take a look ahead to even warmer temperatures tomorrow before it cools down. that's coming up in a few minutes. mike checking in on the bay bridge. >> the chp report was very light this morning. construction clearing, south 17, no major issue, and around the bay, the speed sensors move ficely so they're at green. eastbound 80. there was a crash, it was clearing over the last few minutes and no slowing on the censors. we'll take a live look. from emeryville, we can see this right here, the tower and treasure island exit and entry, no problems there. back to you. >> thank you very much. >> 4:31. to a developing story. san jose police chief voicing serious concern for his officers' safety this morning. >> he called violence against

the law enforcement community appalling after the third shooting in less than a week. >> kris, with several how fares on paid administrative leave, they don't have enough officers to patrol the streets right now. >> that was a concern before the officers were on paid administrative leave. no officer was injured in the latest confrontation. though the officers did fire at the suspect, suspect wkv]ñ uninjured as well. it happened just yesterday morning near east ridge on a neighborhood in the east side of san jose where officers confronted a man seen carrying a gun. the san jose police, they say that gun was stolen. when that suspect shot in the direction of the officers, one of those officers shot back. the officer missed and then the suspect took off running, only to be caught nearby. but san jose police chief eddie garcia says he feels his officers are under attack. >> the actions of the suspect

were appalling and the continued violence toward law enforcement officers is equally appalling. >> wednesday, another officer shot and killed a suspect after that man killed two people in their willow glen home. a day earlier on tuesday, another officer shot and killed a man after that suspect allegedly charged at police with a knife during a domestic dispute in the east san jose foothills. all the officers who fired their weapons are on routine administrative leave. at 5:30, we'll talk about what the staffing levels are now and z and what the police chief is doing about it. kris sanchez, today in the bay. >> thanks. >> it's 4:33. new this morning, authorities in the north bay say a woman is in critical condition after be savagely beaten and hauled off in a car. last night, santa rosa police received reports of a man striking a woman repeatedly with a weapon. about a mile away, they found a

car matching the description. officers found the woman in the back seat floor board. robert holiday is facing attempted murder and kidnapping charges. >> the search is on for a possible arsonist as investigators are looking into a fire in the willow glen neighborhood of san jose. this> we're all kind of surprised and perplexed because this is, you know, we have never had anything like this happen in this area. to the church. we don't know who would want to do something liketm that. >> well, arsonq investigators i both the san jose fire department and the atf are looking into the situation and this incident comes on the heels of several suspected arsons in

willow glen last week. >> continuing coverage now, more emotional testimony expected today at the preliminary hearinc for the man accused of killing scott lunger continues. a friend of the suspect testified on friday. describing mark estrada's demeanor moments after the shooting. he says estrada showed up to his doorstep crying hysterically and bleeding, claiming he was shot by police. he was later arrested at a hospital after being treated for a gunshot wound. sergeant lunger was killed in a traffic stop in 2015. >> the marin coroner's chief deputy is facing serious criminal charges. reporting that authorities in eureka last thursday arrested darryl harris of san rafael. he's accused of sexually abusing a girl under 14 at least three times between 2008 and 2011. harris also is accused of lewd acts with the same girl over the following four years. >> an east bay police officer

and a canine escaped serious injury when their car was struck by a suspected drink driver. police say early saturday, the officer was asking as a traffic guide after a crash on meadow lane. the driver of the suv ignored the stop and accelerated toward the police car with the dog inside. the officer got into the patrol car but couldn't move it out of the way in time. the injuries to both the dog and officer were minor. >> that's good to hear. >> coming up next, an expected outcome in the french election is having an impact on the stock market. we'll look ought what direction futures are pointing. >> plus, president trump's travel ban gets another test after the executive order travel ban ran into stumbling blocks out of the gate.

a major accomplishment coming off a very wet winter we the weatherq rate scientists found our weather team is the most accurate when it comes to predicting rain, thunderstorms, fog, even high and low temperatures. >> even snow. >> that's true. we knew that. >> we knew that. but quite an honor. we're proud of our weather team. you said, it did snow in tahoe this weekend. >> that was really cool to see. now, we're going to have some dry weather and a chance to just also get in some warm temperatures around the bay area. here's a live look outside palo alto as you get ready to head out. all dry, and we have seen patchy fog in spots, but not right there. 54 degrees. also 54 in livermore and 53 in napa. san jose starts out at 53 degrees and looking at high temperatures today. it will be topping out in the upper 70s in milpitas and morgan hill seeing a high of 78 degrees. we'll have low 80s in parts of the east bay, in danville and

pleasanton, up to 82 degrees. and oakland today reaching 73 degrees. it's going to be such a nice one. low 70s also for the peninsula and 72 degrees in san mateo. san francisco, 71 degrees in the mission district, and the north bay looking at a high of 83 in santa rosa. as we start out this morning, looking live out there at san francisco, kind of misting and drizzling at times but we're mostly clear overhead and then as you get ready for the day, this is what you need, definitely a jacket this morning as we're starting out with cool temperatures and throughout the day as it warms up from short sleeves in order. as we look at the day planner for oakland, it will be in the upper 50s at 8:00. at 57 degrees, and then at 67 at noon. you'll want to take lunch outside. throughout the evening, in the lower 70s with a nice breeze and all of that sunshine is going to be a beautiful day. and for san francisco, we're up to 68 degrees today, and even warmer tomorrow, but then on wednesday, there will be a

little bit of a shift. there will be an onshore flow, and that will bring in more clouds and also the low clouds, mist and drizzle. it will be breezy also on thursday. we continue on with temperatures in the 60s throughout the rest of the forecast. for the inland areas, we go from 78 degrees today, tomorrow will be the warmest day of the ]ek, and then with a shift in the winds, it will be breezy. a slight chance ofu! showers i the north bay. n after that, we're all dry once again. only one slight chance of rain in this seven-day forecast. and mike has some more information on highway 17. >> we typically see the construction crew clear, but i saw slowing just south of the map. i tried to scan the entire bay area and a little beyond, and right around lexington reservoir, we saw slowing as you're heading from santa cruz, but heading down to there, that area as well, the southbound side is slowing over the last few minutes. again, probably the crew clearing. they typically have construction over there over night.

first functional bike traffic signals. nice improvement there. >> all the rain we had in recent months taking a toll of highway 37 in the north bay and now there is talk of adding tolls to fix the highway. they report that a meeting last week, transportation agencies discussed several options. one is a $5 toll charge to cross the 12-mile section of highway. that would generate nearly $10j billion. >> you talk about rising sea levels. there's a special meeting to discuss the threat from rising sea levels. in the bay area, scientists predict that could threaten billions of dollars worth of inf infrastructu infrastructure. some lawmakers have called san mateo county ground zero for impacts because of how many assets are located at sea level. >> good news for commuters this morning. the average price of gas is down more than a nickel in the last couple weeks. that is courtesy of falling

cancer. at least higher risk of cancer. researchers at the university of chicago illinois looked at overall environmental quality and cancer rates across thec country. they found that counties with the worst air and water quality along with high levels of land pollution averaged 39 additional cancer cases for every li100,00 people. prostate and breast cancer had theq strongest lead to poor environmental quality. elementary school may be at risk for depression and then substance abuse as a teen. scientists followed over 4,000g children through their adolescen adolescence. those who were bullied the most in fifth grade showed more symptoms of depressionq/ in seventh grade. kids were more likely to use alcohol, cmarijuana, and tobacc wschool. presidential election, our country is in the middle of an opioid epidemic. for a decade, prescriptions for creating a generation of people dependent on pills. >> we're examining efforts to

curb the crisis and why government red tape is preventing research into one of the most promising practices. >> our investigation found marijuana is helping pain patients ditch their pills. we got tipped off to this by a north bay doctor whot recommend medical cannabis to patients. he started tracking their opioid abuse and found half!u reduced their painkillers after using pot for sixút,months. we did digging and the feds recently pointed to a link betweenjf medical marijuana and lower levels of opioid describing. the feds classify marijuana as a drug with a high potential for ñ ro tight control. we reviewed hundreds of federally funded studies and learned right now across all of the federal health research centers, there are only eight projects that actually involve cannabis in human clinical tries to look at the potential benefits of marijuana.
