the upper 40s in santa rosa. 53 in livermore. highs today reaching into the mid 70s. this is where we should be for the beginning of may, not seeing those 80s in the forecast today. we'll talk about this and look ahead to the weekend coming up in a few minutes. mike now has a closure for highway 17. >> we do, but this was a closure because of road work. and we'll show you where that is. overall, the bay has a great, easy drive, just as you would expe expect, and we saw slowing on highway 17, but it was a full closure of the southbound side, and you were shifting over to the northbound side. so right around the cat, over the last five minutes, i have seen the sensors start to change up in both directions. they may be clearing the crew before the 5:00 scheduled opening. better news for all commuters throughout the area. and toward the bay bridge, no delays. no problems at the maze or approaching the bridge. >> thank you. 4:31. new this morning, a big police presence overnight in contra costa county.

police officers, fire crews and an ambulance were called to this home just west of pittsburg, but detectives wouldn't tell our crew why they were there. the neighborhood is south of highway 4. our crew has calls out to investigators to find out what happened. >> there's another airline brawl to tell you about. a fight breaks out on a southwest flight, and a bay area man broke it up and is speaking out. >> sheryl herd talked to him and has details on another bizarre fight. >> passengers scrambling to get out of the way of two men fighting in the aisles onboard this southwest flight that landed in burbank. >> the guy beating him up is the victim. >> daniel green should know. he's the one who broke up the fight. >> the victim did nothing, he was just getting ready to disembark. the guy who started it, according to the victim, said this guy just started going crazy on me. >> the cell phone video shows

passengers attempting to calm tensions between the two men. >> what was awesome was the women were the first ones there. they were trying to grab this guy. and tried to break them apart, but they couldn't. >> a female flight attendant rushed in but ended up in the seat. >> if you watch carefully, she's going to collapse underneath both men. >> with the men slugging it out on top of her. >> i saw people with their cell phones, but nobody is helping. >> that's when green, a retired firefighters stepped in to break it up. >> it's surreal. you see it on tv, and all of a sudden it's happening in front of you. >> nbc bay area news. an emotional council meeting in san jose last night. landlords were heard booing when a fourth person was removed for interrupting council members.

at issue here, fast tracking safe guards for renters from no-cause eviction. last month, the city council did pass a law requiring a legal reason if landlords want to evict somebody. that legislation was slated to take effect next month, but renters argue they need it right now. >> thank you for all standing up for hundreds of unjustly evicted families in your districts and for over 400,000 tenants here in the city of san jose. >> the only winner of the just-cause eviction are lawyers, housing departments, and criminals. >> so renters had complained that no-cause evictions were spieging ahead of the new rule. on tuesday night, the council approved an urgency ordinance which means the rules take effect now. landlords have to prove at least one of 12 reasons if they want to evict somebody. that include not paying rent and committing a crime. >> east bay water customers may soon pay higher rates to cover system improvement costs.

they're suggesting a 19% rate hike. it would upgrade old pipes and water systems. that would amount to a 9% increase this july. pete will join us with a live report at 5:30. >> happening today in oakland, taking a stand against violence. discussing a department of violence prevention. oakland residents are encouraged to speak out at city hall. >> a fire left people without a home at walnut creek on sierra drive. firefighters got the call around 8:20. they kept the fire contained to the second floor of the building. luckily, no one was hurt. >> san francisco mayor ed lee is reportedly launching a new effort to speed up the city's 911 response times. recent staffing shortages along with technical glitches have

impacted response times. the national standard is to answer 90% of emergency calls within ten seconds. examiner reports the mayor says san francisco is currently at about 75 pest. >> today is national bike to school day, and student in san jose will be busy pedaling. reed elementary school students and teachers plan to walk and ride to school with city officials going with them. that starts at 8:00 this morning. students and parents aren't just getting exercise. there's going to be a giveaway of free bike helmets, a raffle for a free bicycle, and a bike rodeo during recess. >> 4:36. coming up, trying to gain a leg up. the subtle change amazon made to try to win back customers from its competitors. >> plus, turning up the heat on jan napolitano. what blistering accusations are now leading to calls for her resignation.

falling oil prices and comments from a federal reserve official. most expect another interest hike next month. the dow falling 26 points. the nasdaq rising 17 to 6120. that's a new record high. also, watch disney's stock today. shares are down in premarket trading. the media giant reporting quarterly profits that beat wall street forecasts thanks in part to the box office success of beauty and the beast. they did miss on higher programming costs and continued subscriber losses at espn as more people are dropping their cable package or known as cutting the cord. espn hoped to offset that by launching a subscription streaming service. >> amazon has dropped the free shipping minimum order back to $25, back from the $35 it set back in february. the move happened some time last week. amazon appears to be trying to counter lower free shipping

oh, my gosh, i almost said quarter to 7:00. who's trying to push this week along? it's quarter to 5:00 in the morning. let's take a live look outside, a beautiful look at san francisco this morning. cooler temperatures out there as well. >> two hours earlier. >> it's friday, everybody. >> no daylight savings time. we would have warned you about that. and there's never a bad time to brew up coffee. >> and you'll wand to grab hot coffee this morning because it is cool as you get ready to head out the door. here's a look from at&t park from the embarcadero. clouds starting to mix in this morning. you may even feel some mist. looking live at palo alto, as folks get out there on the roadways, we'll see our temperature trend in sunnyvale starting out in the upper 50s,

and then into the upper 60s by lunchtime with mostly sunny skies. our temperatures today will be right where they should be for this time of year. our average high, 72 degrees. and we'll be there as we go into the day. looking now at some of those temperatures in the mid 50s and upper 50s as you head out the door in oakland, and then throughout this afternoon, we're going to see those highs in oakland reaching 66 degrees. 73 degrees in napa today. also 73 in morgan hill. half moon bay will be at 59 degrees. and san francisco, 62. we are seeing the change happening, and looking at the bigger picture here, the satellite imagery showing there is a large area of low pressure here. the swirl of these clouds just to the west of us. and this will also help bring in some cooler air for the next several days. and also some gusty winds as well as a slight chance of rain. especially for the north bay tomorrow. during the afternoon, we will have some light rain clipping the north bay and then moving off towards the east. the rest of the bay area stays

dry, even going into the weekend. it will be dry. but then next week, we'll start to see rain rolling back into the bay area by tuesday afternoon and continuing into wednesday as well. so looking at that seven-day forecast, fog this morning in san francisco. 62 degrees. and it will continue to cool off into the upper 50s with some gusty winds, especially on friday. once that storm system we're seeing just off to the west not bringing any rain, but it will cause an increase in wind speeds. for the inland areas, 74 today, and some upper 60s for the weekend. we'll be breezy and that chance of rain next tuesday. as we head over to mike, it looks pretty calm on the roads now. >> that's right, and a lighter flow of traffic starting to take effect now through the summertime because i'm already seeing on social media a lot of graduation pictures posted from last weekend. looking over here toward a nice drive to the bay bridge and the rest of the bay, no major slowing on the roads.

crews found the van later and identified the victims as an 88-year-old man and his 65-year-old daughter. some of the communities threatened this winter by the oroville dam crisis are now raise tharg concerns with governor brown. leaders of seven downstream towns including oroville have sent the governor a letter listing a series of concerns including a full review of the damaged design and how it should operate in the future. >> 4:49 right now. we have new details this morning on a plan to possibly charge visitors to see san francisco's crooked stretch of lombard street. there's an unexpected twist to all this. supervisors don't want to pay for a study to figure out if the plan might work. the plan originally called for $250,000 to study the toll. a vote, though, could still happen later this month. >> a transit group right now pushing for more time to use the carpool lane, although some fear

it could make traffic worse. according to the marin independent journal, the metropolitan division wants to expand carpool hours to last from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. right now, the carpool lanes ejd at 8:30. opponents are concerned longer hours would increase traffic and collisions instead of improving flow. >> 4:50. medical news this morning, the age a woman begins menopause and how she treats the symptoms may increase the risk of hearing loss. women who used oral hormone therapy especially for a long period of time had a higher risk of hearing problems. if you want to lower the sodium in your diet, shunning the salt shaker is not enough. a new study finds processed foods and restaurant fare make up 70% of americans intake of sodium. adding salt at the stable only accounted for 5%. that's why it's so important to read the sodium content when buying groceries and choose

>> all right. a mystery solved to tell you about. a year ago, a san francisco family found a well preserved victorian era coffin inside of it, 3-year-old girl holding a single rose. now, we know who she was and when she lived. edith howard cook was born in 1873 and died in 1876. the nonprofit garden of innocence turned to a dna expert who found a great nephew living in nurin county and brought closure to the family. >> everybody needs a name. her parents lovingly gave her a name, and it got lost in the process somewhere. but now she's got it back. >> all right, no longer a footnote to history. garden of innocence plans to hold a memorial service for her next month. >> interesting looking coffin, too. two window panes. >> bizarre. >> get ready for some new faces at the oakland zoo. three now otter pups make their debut this morning.
