thing. what he was the right thing. >> now, many worry the real reason comey was fired because comey was leading the investigation into connections between the white house and the kremlin. the person who actually recommended the firing is a relatively unknown brand-new deputy attorney general rod rosen steen, well thought of. he may have very well thought that comey misbehaved. he took that recommendation to his boss, who of course, is the attorney general jeff sessions. you remember sessions recused himself from the russia investigation after it was revealed he was less than accurate under oath about his own contact with russians. so bottom line, a fellow investigating the connections between the president's men and the russians is fired by someone who recused himself because of his own contacts with the russians. as laura mentioned, the president thinks people eventually thank him. tweeting, comey lost the confidence of almost everyone in washington, republic and democrat alike. when things calm down, they'll
5:47 am
be thanking me. the president of the united states then tweeted a link to the drudge report listing director comey's faults. several without sources have told nbc that the president thought his critics would be pleased with monday afternoon firing, not understanding at all how serious the suspicions are that the white house is connected to the russians. and what can only be called the worst possible timing ever, the president is due to meet with russian foreign minister sergey lavrov in the white house today. it is a prescheduled meeting. the optics are obviously terrible, and it's astounding the white house didn't realize it, firing the white house director investigating russia less than 24 hours before the russians come to the white house. comey was also scheduled to testify before tomorrow. he may still. we don't know. >> interesting. >> we will find out. thank you, scott. scott, of course, examining our president's tweets, executive orders and speeches every
