i guess we're getting there. >> you'll be able to see the full sun today because it will be all bright and clear, except for along the coastline where we'll see clouds hanging out. that will also help cool us down. it's 55 degrees as you head out the door in the south bay. 53 in the peninsula and tri-valley. after this cool start, we will also see some of the low clouds along the coast clearing out, and it will be about 10 degrees cooler in. how about that? 73 degrees in the peninsula and south bay. tri-valley, 75 degrees. 62 degrees in san francisco. as we go into the next several days, more cool weather on the way. i'll talk about that in about seven minutes. mike takes us back to the crash on the east shore freeway. >> involving a big rig which is on the shoulder. it's at least a distraction, but no lanes are blocked there. we'll show you where that is. no major issues for most of the bay commute. light build right now, the bay bridge toll plaza, metering lights are on. is the slowest drive, richmond past the crash, getting down to el cerrito, you'll see slowing

for the distraction, and the merge by golden gate field. meanwhile, the rest of the bay does move well. we still have disabled big rig over there, east highway 4, but no major concerns. and no major delays getting over to the tri-valley and to the east bay. looking pretty good. back to you. >> thank you, mike. >> breaking news now to get to. this happened overnight. a series of car fires in two east bay cities just minutes away from each other. now, firefighters are investigating. >> both fires were reported between midnight and 1:00 this morning. one in walnut creek, the second in lafayette. >> today in the bay's bob redell joining us live from the scene of the walnut creek fire. these aren't the only car fires reported this week in contra costa county. >> these are the second and third this week alone. good morning to you, sam and laura. you can see what's left of the van that was parked in the driveway of this home on leroy lane in walnut creek. it caught fire a little before 12:30 this morning. the fire department was able to put it out before it spread to

the house. we did speak with a spokesperson for the contra costa county fire protection district. he tells us it's too early to tell if this car fire was intentionally set or related to another car fire that started 15 minutes later in front of another home just over two miles away. the second car, as you can see in the video, was a large white suv parked in the driveway of a house on padre street in lafayette. firefighters again stopped that fire from damaging the home. in both instances overnight, an arson investigator was called out to investigate. it's not clear if these fires are related to another car fire from earlier this week. this is video of a vehicle that burned a few feet away from a home near holiday highlands park in martinez just before 4:00 early monday morning. an arson investigator also looked into that incident. again, not clear if that car was intentionally set. we have three car fires in

contra costa county in a period of roughly 72 hours this week. again, the fire department is not saying, a, that they're related, and b, that they are arson. ing live here in walnut creek, bob redell, today in the bay. >> one we'll follow. thank you very much. >> it's 6:0 right now, and a warning to watchers this morning. three separate muggings yesterday on b.a.r.t. two in oakland, the other in hayward. the attackers got away with valuables, but no one was seriously hurt. in one case, the station agent got up to the thief and they were able to retrieve a stolen iphone before the thief took off. >> authorities are trying to piece together what started a brawl on a southwest airlines flight headed to oakland. >> stop it! >> complete chaos again. cell phone video here showing you the men that were throwing punches and the women trying to break it up. this happened sunday afternoon

on a flight dallas to oakland by way of burbank. a retired bay area firefighter happened to be on the flight. he helped to stop the fight. daniel green of santa clara says it started when the plane was still taxiing after touchdown. >> the victim did nothing. he was just getting ready to disembark. the guy who started it, i guess, according to the victim, said this guy just started going crazy on me. >> burbank police arrested one of the men involved in the fight. crediting their employees for their quick responses. >> happening today, attorneys in the sierra lamar murder case will meet as they get ready for antolin garcia torres to be sentenced for kidnapping and murder. today in the bay's kris sanchez witnessed it all and joins us live outside the hall of justice with the next steps for garcia torres and his defense team. good morning, kris. >> good morning to you, laura. we know the jury will reconvene at the hall of justice next

tuesday. but today, antolin garcia torres's lawyer along with the lawyer from the district attorney's office will gather less than a day after antolin garcia torres was convicted of killing and kidnapping sierra lamar and trying to kidnap three other women. we also talked with the families as they were walking out of the courthouse yesterday, less than an hour after the guilty verdicts came down. sierra lamar's mother marlene did not want to talk about whether garcia torres should get the death penalty, but it is one option. the lead prosecutor told us he would not comment out of respect for the process. but the nbc bay area legal analyst who himself has been in that same position before, explained that the death penalty offers a powerful bargaining chip that could be cashed in to find sierra lamar's body. >> that process requires respecting the jury's decision and to be free from any interference, there can be no further comments from this

a cloudy start around the coastline. a live look outside at half moon. if you are planning to go hiking along the peninsula today, expect the fog and mist at 7:00 this morning as our temperatures will be in the low 50. it only warms up slowly with some clearing, peeks of sunshine at 10:00, and it will be a cooler day. 59 degrees at 2:00 with breezy winds. we'll struggle to make it out of the 50s the coast, but if you're planning to head to the coliseum to watch the today in the early afternoon game, all bright sunshine and temperatures today reaching the mid 60s. coming up in three minutes, i'll have a look at the temperature trend for los gatos. right now, mike is tracking a couple crashes around the bay. >> the one we're focusing on because it's the biggest distraction so we see slowing despite the light traffic around the bay, up here in the east bay. the east shore freeway around el cerri cerrito. we see a slower drive developing farther back, out san pablo, past potrero avenue where the big rig is on the shoulder.

6:12 right now. happening today, police are demonstrating how they're conducting roadside drug driving tests. police across the state scrambling to try to keep up after voters approved legal recreational marijuana in november. police officers are increasing training to spot drug impaired drivers and some agencies are even using saliva tests. it's a difficult test because there's no set level of intoxication for drugs and drugs affect everybody differently. >> new this morning, new tests show how added protection on the side of big rig trucks may save lives in t-bone collisions. the insurance institute for highway safety tested two systems. the first shows what happened when a car going 35 strikes the side of a truck equipped with just the fiberglass deflector. the truck in the second crash is protected with a side under ride protection device. in that case, the car bounces off the uc. there are no protections

requiring side under ride trucks. >> a fine for a man who dumped baby rucroons at a park. wildlife emergency services say a man dumped five newborn raccoons from a trap. they found the raccoons and sent them back to the spca in monterey. >> amazon dropped its free shipping minimum order back from $25 to $35 set in february. reports say the move happened some time last week. amazon appears to be trying to counter lower free shipping offers by target and walmart.com, which dropped its minimum order to $35 in january. >> making more noise on the amazon front here, unveiling its new echo with video screen. >> scott mcgrew, clever strategy. >> it makes video calls. if you buy one, you really have to buy for the person on the other end, right? you want to make video calls to your mom, she's going to need

one, too. that means amazon is able to spread its echo device all over. the company already claims 70% market share with its voice assistance. it's on sale now. it delivers in june. well, it went from the russian issue as a distraction to the russian issue as center ring in a circus. investors have to think about that. those are also corporate earnings to think about as well. futures call for a muted opening. nasdaq hid a new record on tuesday. the jobs website glass door has put together a list of the best place to be a summer intern, and of course, tech companies top that list. you get free housing in many cases, food while you're at work, and you know what. the pay is not so bad. according to glass door, facebook pays its interns $8,000 a month. i went ahead and did the math for you. that's the equivalent of $96,000 a year. microsoft, $7,100.

and for the peninsula, half moon bay, 57, while san mateo is at 65, and 60 on the embarcadero today. in the north bay, 63 in napa. as you get up and about to get the kids ready for school, it is a cool morning. we start out in the mid 50s for most, but then as we get mostly clear skies, temperatures will be warming up at recess. they'll enjoy their time outside. it will be a comfortable and sunny afternoon. as you get ready to head home from school, driving, and also as we track the weather system, there may be a slight chance of rain for the north bay in the forecast for tomorrow. we see the spin and the swirl of the clouds with this low pressure system as it moves closer to the bay area, we'll all feel the winds picking up and it will be a gusty day on thursday and friday. as far as the clouds, we'll see them hanging just near the coastline throughout the day, and some slight rain chances moving in by tomorrow afternoon. we don't see a lot of it, though. it's near the northern sonoma county area, and there may be

some in the coastal marin county area as well. but then the rest of the bay will see an increase in cloud cover throughout the afternoon. and it all stays dry. looking at some breezy winds for san francisco for today. tomorrow as well as friday. for the weekend, highs in the lower 60s. you can go ahead and make plans to get outside. it will be all dry, but also fairly cool. and we'll go from the mid 70s inland today to the upper 60s in time for the weekend. and we keep those 60s through next week. as we head over to mike now, there's a problem crossing the bay. >> that's right. that means i'm talking about one of your bridges on this map. you're seeing the dumbarton and smito bridge pick up. we have a disabled vehicle near the castro valley y, but not a problem for the freeway now. we're looking at this, the richmond to san rafael bridge. reports of debris. sounds like a bunch of stuff off the back of a truck, a couple

we have been seeing so much wind. >> it's going to stay windy, especially along the coastline where we're seeing a lot more change happening as we're going from some warm weather to some cool weather. and as you head out now, looking pretty good. all mild in the low to mid 50s. and it's 50 degrees in the north bay. you can see the low clouds there, and also in san francisco. highs afternoon reaching into the mid 70s. we're going to drop those temperatures down about ten degrees below where we were yesterday, especially for the valleys. breezy 62 des with partly to mostly cloudy skies today in san francisco. we'll look at what's happening this weekend. mother's day in that forecast in about seven minutes. mike now tracking some problems on the nimitz. >> and don't get me wrong because we have a light volume. a nice commute for most of the bay. the nimitz is seeing a few problems over there. on the southbound 880. one is over here as you travel southbound, there's a disabled vehicle which looks like it might have just moved because we

see the speed sensors clearing up a little bit. just south of that area, right by the interchange with 92, all the way to tennyson where there's a fender bender reported minutes ago. west 92 off the interchange is the san mateo bridge. a quick look over there shows you traffic does flow on the flat section as well. really kicking in as a lot folks hit this area just after the last ten minutes of traffic flow. we see some slowing. i'll check that and make sure there's nothing going on on the span. >> thank you very much, mike. >> at 6:31. more than a million people in the east bay soon have to pay for more water. >> pete suratos joining us to tell us why east bay might raise rates and how the drought could be playing a role in the proposal. good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning. in a bit of irony, the money from this proposed water bill hike would be used to offset the revenue loss from folks conserving too much water during the drought. if you remember, a lot of water utility companies were telling folks to do just that.

here's a breakdown of the proposed water bill hike by east bay that was talked about during the board of directors meading. it would be a 9.25% increase this year for folks across the east bay, and a 9% increase the following year. just under $5 a month as far as the water bill increase goes. now, that money will be used for infrastructure to fix some of the pipelines and treatment facilities, and also used to offset the lost revenue during the drought. and to give you an idea of how much water people were conserving, the average household during that drought used 50 gallons less of water per day as opposed to before that drought. as we speak, customers are being notified of this proposed water bill hike. a public hearing will take place in june where they'll make a final decision after the public hearing. if does go into effect, we could see the water bill increase for customers in the east bay on july 1st. live in arinda, pete suratos for

today in the bay. >> something to watch for sure. thank you very much. >> 6:32 on your wednesday. new this morning, a cluster of police activity overnight in a contra costa county neighborhood. police officers, fire crews, and anblance were all called to this home just west of pittsburg. detectives would not tell our crew there why they were there. we do have calls in right now to police. we're waiting for an answer. the neighborhood is off san marco boulevard just south of highway 4. again, our newsroom has calls out to investigators. trying to find out what happened. >> an emotional council meeting in san jose yesterday. landlords were heard booing when a fourth person was removed for interrupting council members. at issue, fast tracking safeguards for renters from no-cause eviction. last month, the council passed a law requiring a legal reason if landlords want to evict someone. the legislation was slated to take effect next month, but renters argued they need it now.

>> thank you for all standing up for hundreds of unjustly evicted families in your districts and for over 400,000 tenets here in the city of san jose. >> the only winner of the just-cause eviction are lawyers, housing departments, and criminals. renters complained no-cause evictions were spiking ahead of the new rules. so tuesday night, the council approved an urgency ordinance which means those rules take effect now. landlords must prove at least one of 12 reasons if they want to evict someone, including not paying rent and committing a crime. happening today, san francisco police plan on giving an update to neighbors on a deadly shooting of a stabbing suspect by officers. you remember, this happened last week as they shot and killed a man outside of a subway restaurant on market street. here's some of the video of that. employees say the suspect ordered a sand and refused to pay for it. he then stabbed one of the workers. a guard who was able to control the man told us at the time that

the suspect tried attacking police officers responding with a knife. today's town hall takes place at 11:00 this morning. also today, the suspect accused of exchanging gunfire with san jose police officers over the weekend is set to be arrai arraigned. authorities say the 29-year-old fired alt officers sunday on tully road right near the east ridge shopping center. officers, after a chase, eventually arrested him in a nearby mobile home park. nobody was injured. >> 6:35. san francisco mayor ed lee is reportedly launching a new effort to speed up the city's 911 response time. recent staffing shortages along with technical glitches have impacted response times to san francisco's 911 call center. the national standard is to answer 90% of emergency calls within ten seconds. the examiner reports the mayor says san francisco is currently at about 75%. right now, watching out for wildfires. this morning, pg&e is holding a news conference with santa clara county fire safe council. they want to reduce wildfire risks as the fire season starts

to intensify. they warn unmanaged weeds and storm debris provides fuel for wildfires threatening thousands of properties in the bay area. >> today is national bike to school day. and students in san jose will be pedaling. reed elementary school students and teachers plan to walk and ride to school with city officials. the events starts at pal amour park at 8:00 a.m. students and parents won't just get to exercise. there will be free bike helimates, a raffle for a free bike, and a bike rodeo during recess. >> wear your helmet during that bike rodeo, cowboys and cowgirls. >> looking at the rest of the roads, they're moving well. south bay just starting the slow drive. watch out around the school zones. that was a great story just now. we have an issue here, southbound 880 at tennyson. a crash or a disabled vehicle. whatever is going on in the lanes here, chp still giving us detail, is causing a backup. as folks are approaching the san mateo bridge. i think folks who are heading down toward the dumbarton bridge are taking 92 instead because

we get a look at saturday's forecast, it will be a little bit cooler for the inland areas. 68 degrees and 64 degrees for the bay, and breezy along the coast and 58 degrees along the coast there. and for mother's day, it will be in the low 60s. we're still going to have that sunshine and slightly cooler temperatures. so as you take mom out, it will be a very nice but cool day. just keep that in mind. as we get a look at the forecast for santa barbara, heading farther to the south along the coast, it will be in the mid 70s. saturday will be the best day to get outside, and then turn aglittle cooler on sunday. and if you're heading over to the sierra to get a look at some snow, here's a live look at kirkwood and the forecast for the weekend may be raining as you come back home across the bay area. it will be there in the sierra a high of 43 degrees. we'll get a look at the forecast here coming up in about three minutes, laura. >> thank you so much, kari. >> 6:38. breaking overnight, a busy night for firefighters in the east

in walnut creek where firefighters say it's too early to tell if an early morning car fire in the driveway of the home was intentionally set. our bob redell has been reporting on the story all morning long. this is one of two overnight car fires within two miles of each other. this is video we ubstained from the lafayette neighborhood. both were reported at almost the same time. this is also the third driveway car fire in contra costa county since monday. investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire that happened in mar ez. another fire last night left five people without a home in walnut creek. this happened at an apartment complex on sierra drive. firefighters got a call around 8:20. they kept the fire contained to the second floor of the building. the flames forced two adults and three out of their homes but luckily no one was hurt. >> a pleasant hill goodwill store caught fire last night on contra costa boulevard and the fire protection district tweeted out this video you're look at of

firefighters working the scene. they say the fire started behind the building and it spread inside. firefighters were able to get a handle on things by about 10:00 last night. cause of the fire is being investigated. >> well, some disturbing allegations made against an east bay doctor. right now, he's accused of sexually assaulting one of his patients. the man is a general practitioner at the john muir outpatient center, and the contra costa sheriff's department is investigating a woman's claim that the doctor assaulted her on two separate visits. detectives say he's worked at other clinics as well and there could be more victims. >> 6:44. happing today in oakland, taking a stand against violence. a community meeting tonight will discuss developing a department of violence provention. >> a proposal to rework california's landmark climate change legislation before it goes to a senate committee. the state cap and trade program set to expire in 2020.

that would end the current program and impose a tax on carbon emissions. that hearing starts today at 9:30. >> new details on a plan to possibly charge visitors to san francisco's lombard street. there's an unexpected twist. supervisors do not want to pay for a study to determine if the plan might work. the plan originally calls for $250,000 to study the lombard street toll. a vote may still happen later this month. well, it is official. south korea's new president took his oath of office just one day after declaring victory in the national election. the president took the oath this morning in the ceremony at the national assembly in seoul. he replaces the impeached former president. the new president favors dialogue with north korea while maintaining pressure and sanctions which is a different approach from the previous president who ties with the north all together. >> president trump tweeting out

this morning that america will thank him for firing the head of the fbi. >> scott mcgrew, today is not that day. >> no thanks, today. outrage from president trump's critics. serious doubt from his own party. it lasts late into the night and starts anew this morning. the president in turmoil in a way he's never been in turmoil before. when word hit that the president of the united states hadded fbi director james comey, pundits and reporters almost immediately brought up nixon and the saturday night massacre. conservatives said they were disappointed and disturbed. democrats and indeed some republicans are now saying a special prosecutor is the only option moving forward. the white house says it fired comey in part because of its mistreatment of hillary clinton. you remember the e-mails, the e-mails that helped donald trump become president and inspired all of those chants of "lock her up." less than a month before the

election, candidate trump praised comey for the way he behaved. >> what he did, he brought back his reputation. he brought it back. he's got to hang tough because there's a lot of people want him to do the wrong thing. what he did was the right thing. >> many worry the real reason comey was fired was because comey was leading the investigation into connections between the white house and the kremlin. you'll remember that comey's boss, jeff sessions, recused himself from the russia investigation after it was revealed sessions was less than accurate about his own contact with the russians. so bottom line, a fellow investigating connections between the president's men and the russians is fired by one of the president's men who should not be involved because of the russians. today's white house press briefing promises to be a doozy. sean spicer won't be doing it.

instead, it will be his deputy, sarah huckabee sanders who last night on fox news said it was time to move on from the russia investigation. she also repeated trump pfls claims he had been told he had been cleared of any wrongdoing. listen for that claim again today. it has no public evidence to back it up. and in what can only be called the worst possible timing ever, the president is due to meet with the president russian foreign minister, sergey lavrov, in the white house today. a prescheduled meeting. the white house fired the guy investigating the russian connection less than 24 hours before a private meeting with the russians. i have a brand-new piece of tape for you. sergey lavrov just showed up to washington this morning. he was greeted by secretary of state tillerson. what you're going to hear is rea mitchell yelling out a question. what does the ambassador think of firing comey? >> did the comey firing cast a shadow -- >> was he fired?

some mild weather. it will be comfortable as you get ready to head home from school and a lot of sunshine. we're seeing some of those clouds rolling over the south bay right now. camera kind of shaking. a breezy wind as you get ready for this day, it will be a day for some light long sleeves and also pants. we're done with the shorts for now. as our temperatures have cooled down, and once again, it's because of the clouds along the coastline. and a stronger onshore flow. we will see some more clouds as we go into tonight becoming mostly cloudy. even some light rain moving into the north bay. this is tomorrow early afternoon. we could see some spotty light showers for santa rosa and also most of sonoma county and marin county. but we're not going to see any heavy downpours and this will be moving off towards the east as we go through the day. looking at the seven-day forecast in san francisco, we start out with fog and low clouds. highs in the low 60s. we keep it cool the next several days and we'll have another chance of rain in the forecast for most of the bay area on

tuesday. for the inland areas, we'll go from 74 degrees today to the upper 60s for the weekend. a mix of sun and clouds and also some gusty winds to wrap up this work week. as we head over to mike, we're showing some slowing now in hayward. >> that's right. that's where most of the slowing is because it is a light volume of traffic. the south bay, it does build a bit, but nothing unusual. nothing really extreme. hayward has been where we have seen a couple crashes. they cleared from the roadway, and a lot more traffic travels across the san mateo bridge, but a lighter build as well as for the tri-valley. things are moving well. we'll take you to waze. i want to show you very interesting. we talked about how the san mateo bridge saw a lot of traffic after the crash at tennyson. look at the three routes waze suggests. theo bridge is one to avoid, but a much longer route, the green one that takes you over to the tri-valley and down to 237, that's 15 miles longer and still faster than traveling across the san mateo bridge. you go, a dramatic change in the last few minutes.
