thank you for being with us here on this thursday, three days in the books, we are just moving so close to that mother's day weekend. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. looking forward to the weekend. i'm liking these cooler temperatures. >> i am, too. when you don't have to blast the air conditioning and you can go out there and enjoy it, you have a nice breeze and people are biking to work today so i think they'll appreciate the cooler temperatures, too. as we get a look at what to expect as you head out the door now, some clouds overhead in spots. it's also fairly mild in the peninsula in the south bay, 56 degrees and 57 degrees in the east bay. as we go into this afternoon, expect the highs to reach into the upper 60s for the inland valleys, even a few low 70s while the coast will be at 58 at half moon bay and san francisco 62. we'll look ahead to the mother's day weekend forecast in eight minutes, but mike says the earlier problems have cleared. kari, we were talking about a roadside fire in san francisco, 280 at cesar chavez

and a deer that was hit in walnut creek, both have cleared in the chp report and these roadways are moving very well. the travel times through the tri-valley, we showed you a live shot through dublin. no surprises coming out of the altamont pass, here are travel times for the tri-valley. and the bay bridge, we'll give you a live lookout there. we see the cash lanes to the left backing up a bit because one isn't open. that will open and then the metering lights will be turned on. those are the changes we'll see over the next half hour. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. new developments out of washington where suspicion is growing over the timing and cause of fbi director james comey's dismissal. >> this as lawmakers continue to push for answers in multiple investigations into the administration's ties to russia. there's a lot going on from our nation's capital. today in the bay's tracie potts is there for us this morning to break the whole thing down. the twists and turns, every hour, tracie keeping the nation

captivated. good morning. >> no question. good morning. this morning we are getting a different story from the white house about just how abrupt the firing of the fbi director may have been. and the focus here on capitol hill is the senate intelligence committee, they're investigating russia and now they're demanding new evidence. the senate intelligence committee is using its subpoena power for the first time since 9/11 to demand documents on russia from fired national security adviser michael flynn. >> i don't have any evidence of collusion or crime but the fbi needs to keep looking and do their job. >> today the committee hears from the new man in charge of the fbi, deputy director andrew mccabe, a late substitute for former director james comey who was fired while investigating trump ties to russia. >> i think that the timing and the reasoning incites people to believe that there's something that's being covered up. >> he wasn't doing a good job. >> the trump administration defends comey's sudden firing which the white house now says
5:03 am
the president had been contemplating for a while. >> it was time for a fresh start at the fbi. >> in a letter to staff, comey says "i have long believed that a president can fire an fbi director for any reason, or for no reason at all." lawmakers still question the timing. comey had reportedly asked for more resources for the russia investigation. >> were those investigations getting to close to home for the president? >> this firing has very much the look and feel of an effort to stop or stymie an investigation. >> but it continues on capitol hill and at the fbi under new leadership. now the justice department says that never happened, that comey never asked for more resources. but he is now being asked to come to capitol hill to testify, probably some time next week. sam and laura? >> tracie potts live from washington. and tonight lester holt sits down one on one with president trump. you can watch the exclusive interview tonight on nightly

news at 5:30. back to news in the bay area happening today we could get new details on the push for new surveillance cameras on several east bay freeways. >> today in the bay's bob redell live in martinez. there have been dozens of freeway shootings over the past year. >> reporter: the district attorney will meet with local law enforcement and an fbi task force to try to figure out where those surveillance cameras should be installed along i-80 and highway 4 between richmond and antioch. those are the roads where many people have been shot or shot at. this meeting happening to a report by the east bay times. the chp reports that there have been 85 shootings on bay area shootings since november of 2015. in costa county, 21 people have been injured, three killed.
5:05 am
the plan is to install a surveillance camera that can pan, tilt, and zoom, shot spotter microphones that can recognize gunfire and automatically direct cameras in the right direction and another camera that is constantly reading license plate numbers. the state pledged the money to cover the cost of the equipment which is expected to run between $1.5 million and $2 million. the newspaper reports the new surveillance system could be rolled out once the cost is nailed down which is expected to happen over the next couple of weeks. reporting live from martinez, bob redell, today in the bay. >> thank you for that update. authorities in fremont are are no doubt looking closely at this video recently posted on social media showing exactly what happened during a massive wedding reception brawl. it was first reported about this this fight over the weekend. it unfolded saturday night at fremont's royal palace banquet hall. dozens of guests involved there were hurt -- or i should say they were involved in a fight. we spoke to the event's wedding photographer who believes the

has a concern about a crash in the tri-valley. >> we just heard about this a couple minutes ago. the freeways are moving very well as far as your speed sensors go but look over there out of pleasanton. southbound 680 reported a crash around highway 84. now, this crash reportedly was originally a vehicle over on the shoulder, someone was fixing their flat tire and then another vehicle crashed into it. that's the fear i have that any time i see somebody on the side of the road so we're waiting for chp to get more information on injuries because it sounds like there are injuries there and we'll follow that. no lanes blocked so far. again, chp is heading to that scene. meanwhile, the are rest of your bay moves well. no major issues as far as the tri-valley bart goes from pleasanton to dublin heading to oakland. back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. competing for home turf. the new moves from the city of l.a. to convince the international olympic committee to consider california for the

building as you see in those renderings as well as weather protected canopies and a new plaza south of the ferry building just to name a few things. now this expansion is being done by the water emergency from transit authority and the hope here is that it will alleviate overcrowding on our current local public transportation systems as well as allow the water transit to have a better response time in the event of a natural disaster. as part of this expansion, the sf ferry service will expand stops to treasure island. those who use this ferry are happy to hear about the expansion. >> i think it's a great idea. the ferry ridership over the years has increased so much. it used to be it was hard to get on the boat. >> i'm all for expanding the ferry. i switch from bart like two years ago and haven't gone back so i prefer this everyday and the more the better. >> the project is being paid for through a mixture of state and

people using snapchat isn't growing very fast and facebook keeps copying every good idea snap comes up with and investors are nervous. snap came out with these new spectacles, the sun glasses that could take pictures and if you say to yourself i've never seen anybody wearing those, the numbers bear you out. snap says the sunglasses business is pretty slow. here's a strange bit of news. people are really, really happy with their airline flights. j.d. power says passenger satisfaction is at an all time high. that sounds strange because each day we're bombarded with videos with something going wrong. it turns out those are isolated and the rest of us managed to get to where we're going unbloodied. jetblue and southwest were top rated, air canada and frontier j.p. e scraped the bottom. another record high for the nasdaq. this is the fourth time in a row. the dow sank slightly. we gave you a heads up on that

a department of homeland security spokesman tweet nod final decisions made on expanding restrictions on large electronics devices in aircraft cabins however it's under consideration. travellers responding on twitter one saying "concentrating 300 plus lithium batteries in every airplane cargo hold is extremely dangerous, negligent and puts lives at risk." another writes "honestly, i'm willing to go through additional security so i don't have to check my laptop on a 36 hour international flight." and from a work angle "how is this supposed to work if companies don't insure electronics material if baggage is lost or damaged." i can only imagine having a big presentation and having to let go of that computer and put in the cargo rather than keep it with me on my person. that's certainly part of the conversation as well. coming up at 6:30, we are pushing for more information from the department of homeland security. we'll try to update you at 6:30. kris sanchez, can today in the bay. a developing story in davis where the police department is

there's no confusion over who is responsible for the firing of the fbi. scott mcgrew, at first the white house said it was not the president's idea. >> that's right, good morning. the first explanation came tuesday afternoon, sam. it put all of the or gins on this brand new deputy attorney general rod rosenstein. the white house explained he was the one who wrote the memo that drove the president to fire the fbi director but the "washington post" this morning says rosenstein is so annoyed by that claim that he has threatened to resign. yesterday, white house spokesperson sara huckabee sanders changed the story around and said the idea started with the president. we still don't know the actual story behind what happened but it's becoming clear the white house vastly underestimated how americans would react and did not think about the optics of the firing at all. case in point, there have been a lot of comparisons between trump's actions and nixon's.
5:46 am
still, you might think the white house would be careful not to mirror nixon in any way and yet the first opportunity reporters had to ask the president about the firing was the president sitting with former secretary of state henry kissinger president nixon's secretary of state. of all the people, the president's photo-op is with henry kissinger. then the president met with the russians in the oval office less than 24 hours after firing the head of the fbi. u.s. press was not allowed in so these are official pictures from the russian news agency which was allowed in. russian foreign secretary there and then this is the russian ambassador to the united states, kislyak. this is the guy everybody is so upset about. the guy jeff sessions met with and forgot to tell congress about, the guy michael flynn met with and then lied to the vice president about. understand, there's nothing wrong with the president of the united states meeting with the russian ambassador this is what

president's ambassadors do but there is such a strong suspicion that the president fired the head of the fbi because he was too close to the russian investigation which centers around this russian. a cbs reporter caught up with vladimir putin last night and asked him about the whole situation, this is file tape of putin. putin said he had nothing to do with the firing of jim comfy which is certainly what you would hope. putin was at a hockey game he organized for charity. he plays hockey. his side won. the "new york times" said putin scored seven goals.
