now saying comes in direct contrast to what we've been hearing from the white house during the week. >> and during that interview, president trump said he had dinner with comey and comey told him he wasn't under investigation. now, people close to the former fbi director are telling a different story about all that. according to a "new york times" report, that's been confirmed by nbc news, during the dinner, comey was asked multiple times he would be loyal to the president. but comey says he only promised honesty. >> and the public is weighing in on comey's firing in a survey monkey poll. 51% say the firing was not appropriate. 55% said it makes them less confident that the russia investigation will be conducted fairly. let's bring in lester holt. >> reporter: in the midst of the growing fallout, president trump made several headlines in our one-on-one, discussing the the

first time, his reasons for f e firing fbi director comey, who was leading an investigation into the trump campaign's possible ties to russia. the president made eyebrow-raising statements that comey told him on three separate occasions he wasn't under investigation. the president came out swinging with harsh words for the country's former top cop. >> look, he's a showboat. he's a grandstander. the fbi has been in turmoil. you know that. i know that. everybody knows that. you take a look at the fbi a year ago, it was in virtual turmoil. less than a year ago. it hadn't recovered from that. >> monday, you met with the deputy attorney general, rob rosenste rosenstein. did you ask for a recommendation? >> what i did was i was going to fire comey. my decision. >> reporter: you had made the decision before they came in the room. >> i was going to fire comey. there's no good time to do it, by the way -- >> reporter: in your letter, you

said i accepted their recommendation. you had made the decision. >> i was going to fire regardless of recommendation. he made a recommendation. highly respected. very good guy. very smart guy. the democrats like him. the republicans like him. he made a recommendation. but regardless of recommendation, i was going to fire comey, knowing there was no good time to do it. and in fact, when i decided to just do it, i said to myself, i said, you know, this russia thing, with trump and russia, is a made-up story. it's an excuse by the democrats because they lost the election. and the reason they should have wob it was the electoral college is impossible for a republican to win. f everybody was thinking they should have won the election. this was an excuse for having lost the election. >> reporter: are you angry with mr. comey because of the russia investigation?

>> i want somebody that's competent. i am a big fan of the fbi. as far as i'm concern, i want that thing to be done properly. >> reporter: let me ask you about your termination letter to mr. comey. you write, i greatly appreciate you informing me on on three separate cases i'm not under investigation. why did you put that in there? >> because he told me that. >> under investigation in regard to the russian investigation. >> he wanted to have dinner. we had a very nice dinner at the white house. >> he asked for the dinner? >> the dinner was arranged. i think he asked for the dinner and he wanted to stay on as the fbi head and i said, consider, we'll see what happens. but we had a very nice dinner and at that time he told me, you are not under investigation. which i knew anyway. first of all, when you're under investigation, you're giving all sorts of documents and everything. i knew i wasn't under and i heard it was stated at the committee at some committee level that i wasn't.

>> during the phone call and another phone call he said it. he said it once at dinner and then he said it twice during phone calls. >> did you call him? >> in one case i called him and in one case he called me. >> did you ask him? >> i actually asked him, yes. i said, if it's possible, would you let me know am i under investigation. he said, you are not under investigation. >> but he has given sworn testimony that there is an ongoing investigation into the trump campaign and possible collusion with the russian government. you were the centerpiece of the trump campaign. so was he being truthful? >> i know that i'm not under investigation. me, personally. i'm not talking about campaigns. i'm not talking about anything else. i'm not under investigation. >> did you ask him to drop the investigation? >> no, never. >> did anyone from the white house -- >> no, in fact, i want the investigation speeded up. >> did anybody from the white house ask him? >> any surrogates on behalf? >> not that i know of. >> what you said about a moment

ago about supporting the allegation, a lot of people find it hard to believe that people tweeted very recently, it's a total hoax. a taxpayer charade. >> this was set up by the democrats, lester. it was a way, an excuse for them losing. there is no collusion and everybody has said and i think you will admit that, there is no collusion between me and my campaign and the russians. the other thing is, the russians did not affect the vote. and everybody seems to think that. if russia or anybody else is trying to interfere with our elections, i think it's a horrible thing and i want to get to the bottom of it and i want to make sure it will never, ever happen. >> senate intelligence committee wants information from the treasury department financial crimes unit about your finances and your business's finance. can you tell us whether you, your family, your businesses, your surrogates have accepted any investments, any loans from

russian individuals or institutions? >> i sent a letter to lindsey graham from one of the most prestigious law firms in the country of tremendous, highly rated law firm that had nothing to do with russia. none whatsoever. and i don't have any property in russia. a lot of people thought i owned office buildings in moscow. i don't have property in russia. and i am in very -- i am in total compliance in every way. now, i have to tell you, i file documents, hundreds of pages worth of documents with the elections bureau. more involved with russia. i have had dealings over the years where i sold a house to a very wealthy russian many years ago. i had the miss universe pageant which i owned for quite a while. i had it in moscow a long time

ago. but other than that, i have nothing to dawith ruo with russ. >> i don't know where to start. si lo hubiese dicho de manera that. maybe if that had been said in a more explicit way earlier on, we wouldn't be where we are now. >> there's a shot of you when you first walk in. and it seems like the president handed you a piece of paper. of course, the eagle-eyed viewer wants to know, what was that paper? >> this was the paper. it's five pages of quotes of democrats who have been critical of comey. a few calling for his resignation, a few calling for his firing. being critical. there were about 20 quotes on here. but the president wanted me to have that. and it makes a fair point that a lot of democrats were not happy with comey, either. many believe he torpedoed hillary clinton's chances. >> unhappy with him at first.

and unhappy with his firing later. >> but part of the reason why the white house thought, this might not be so controversial. >> i got the sense, a lot of people got the sense, they didn't see this blowback coming. this would be something that would be more universally applauded. >> lester, thank you. you're going to be back in our next half hour, with more from the president, including if he feels his legitimacy as commander in chief is coming under attack. as you might expect, reaction to the president's comments on james comey has been swift on capitol hill. during a senate hearing, the fbi's acting director came to the defense of his former boss comey. n nbc national correspondent peter alexander is at the white house with more on it. peter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. president trump flatly contradicting his aides and his vice president's assessment that russia had nothing to do with his decision to fire fbi director james comey, telling lester he had been thinking about that russia thing with trump, what he called a made-up thing, when he made the decision to get rid of his fbi director.

this morning, that extended interview revealing new inconsistencies between what trump says and what his aides have been saying for days. this morning pushing back at the president, leading lawmakers defending ousted fbi director james comey after mr. trump branded him a grandstander and a showboat. >> i found him to be one of the most ethical, upright, straightforward individuals i've had the opportunity to work with. >> frankly, i'm offended at the president's comments today. >> reporter: on comey's dismissal, president trump offering a new version of events. >> i was going to fire regardless of recommendation. >> reporter: contradicting top aides and the vice president. the president acted on the clear recommendations of the deputy attorney general, rob rosenstein, and attorney general, jeff sessions. >> no one from the white house. that was a d.o.j. decision. >> the next day -- >> he took the recommendation seriously and made a decision based on that. >> reporter: vice president pence punctuating the point. >> president trump made the right decision at the right time

to accept the recommendation of the deputy attorney general. >> reporter: the white house spokeswoman saying, quote, the back and forth doesn't make a difference. >> this shouldn't be a complicated process. the president knew that director comey was not up to the task. >> reporter: stepping into that role and into the spotlight, acting fbi director andrew mccabe, rebutting this white house claim from wednesday. >> the rank and file of the fbi had lost confidence in their director. >> director comey enjoyed broad support within the fbi and still does to this day. >> reporter: mccabe also disagreeing with the president's assessment earlier this week that the russia investigation is a total hoax and a taxpayer funded charade. >> we consider it to be a highly significant investigation. >> reporter: an investigation he says hasn't been impeded and won't be. >> simply put, sir, you cannot stop the men and women of the fbi from doing the right thing. >> reporter: as for the president's telling nbc news that comey told him three times he was not under investigation -- >> i will not comment on whether

or not the director and the president of the united states had that conversation. >> reporter: and new this morning, the president unleashing a series of angry early morning tweets. they write, as a very active president with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with perfect accuracy. he adds, maybe the best thing to do would be to cancel all future press briefings and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy. then he appears to tlehreaten h former fbi director, writing, comey better hope there are no tapes of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press. matt and savannah, back to you. >> peter alexander at the white house, thank you. we heard president trump talk about his dinner at the white house with director comey. nbc news justice correspondent pete williams joins us now. pete, let's set the scene there. it's january. we know the fbi is investigating possible links or collusion between trump associates and the russians. should that dinner have taken

place? >> well, during the interview, matt, the president said twice, that comey asked for the dinner. but several people who know comey say, they heard from him shortly after the dinner that he was asked to come to the white house and did so reluctantly without telling people at the fbi about it. they confirm a "new york times" account, recalling that comey told them that during the dinner mr. trump asked him a couple of times if he would be loyal to the president. and comey said he couldn't promise that but he would always be honest. the white house says that version of events of what happened is not accurate. that the president would not say that he expected personal loyalty. >> pete, the president told lester holt that during this dinner, he asked director will comey, am i personally under investigation? so, put on your legal beagle hat. is there anything improper, illegal, unethical about that question, from the president to an fbi director? >> i've asked several former prosecutors about this. they say it wasn't illegal for the president to ask the question. it would not, for example, be considered an attempt to

interfere with a federal investigation. they said it's unwise to ask a question like that, partly because of the way it could be perceived if it became public. and some of the former prosecutors say they thought mr. comey should have said that he couldn't answer it, savannah. >> all right. pete, thank you very much. and the question to be answered, if the goal was to convince people because i fired jim comey for good reason, not related to the russia investigation, how did he do? >> he did pretty poorly. he should have done it three months ago, when there would have been more running room to do that. more of an expectation at the start of the administration, at a time like that.

but what really made this, i think, a bungling attempt of keystone kop-like, the fact that the staff seems to be playing catchup. we in the media seem to have the timeline better and more accurately than the white house staff themselves. and the fact that you have that disconnect, adds to this chaotic nature of what apparently was a decision that was made somewhat hastily in the last week. and based on the fact that the president's not happy with the fact that every time he saw comey on tv, he wasn't talking about hillary's e-mails. he was talking about the russian investigation. >> if a president comes out and contradicts what his staff has been saying, and by the way, what he said earlier and what the vice president said, you're playing damage control the next day and we're not getting that sense today. >> i cannot overstate how extraordinary it is. i worked in a white house that was far from perfect. but i never was asked to go out

and lie. an i was never caught in a lie by a president who went out and contradicted me. neither was the vice president of the united states. neither was the senior adviser. what the president does over and over again, is create a reality that is completely detached from the reality that he believed in hours before. and he sent his entire team -- and no one is immune, from his, you know whatever he believes to be true in the moment. not his vice president. we have a vice president, a senior staffer in kellyanne conway, an entire press office with zero credibility. that white house podium used to mean something. now, they send them out to say whatever. >> let me ask you about vice president pence. this is two times he's been out on a limb, taking up the cause of the administration, giving the talking points, only to find out they're in error. he went out there and stuck his neck out and said, comey was fired because the department of justice said so. and the president told lester, no, he was fired because i wanted to fire him. i mean, what's the vice president thinking right now? >> look, you're absolutely

right. especially on the issue of russia, first mike flynn, now this. the vice president has done his duty, stood by the president, showed his loyalty in public and was the good soldier. in the first 24 hours since right now, to many people, he's the most credible face of the administration. he's gone out there and used his credibility. and now, it's eroded away. i actually have talked to some people that are close to the vice president. and they're very concerned that he's being used this way. and they hope at some point he finally says, you know what, mr. president? i will do everything on health care. i'll stand up for you on immigration. i'll stand up for you on policy. don't ask me to spin on russia anymore because it is ruining my own credibility, which then, of course, hurts the administration. >> all right. nicolle and chuck, thank you. chuck will have more on this on sunday on "meet the press." all right. let's get to some weather now. al is tracking some storms that

are going to affect a lot of people in this country. >> that's right. especially along the eastern seaboard. but let's take a look and show you what happened in the midwest. and in fact, this is the same system that is heading east and going to cause big problems. this is oklahoma. you can see that garage, just devastated. trees down, power outages. a big mess. this is a big storm making its way to the east. let's look at the radar and give you an idea of what it's doing right now. stretching from kentucky, into louisiana. strong storms are firing up. here's the timeline of what we're seeing today. we're looking for this system that will be centered over the southeast. scattered afternoon thunderstorms. as we move into tonight and on into tomorrow, it makes its way into the mid-atlantic. wind picking up, increasing problems, as the low moves to the delaware coast. and mother's day, heavy winds and rain. rainfall amounts will be from the appalachians three to five inches. as you get from washington all the way to new england, three to

a week from today. something for everyone next week musically here on "today." >> cannot wait. let's get a check of the morning headlines. we're learning more about damage to a plane in the air force one fleet and it could have created a safety hazard if it went undetected. the air force says this happened last year when one of the planes was being serviced. boeing mechanics used contaminated tools and parts while checking for leaks in the oxygen system, according to this report. any tools that are used for that system have to be cleaned in a specific way because residue otherwise can react with oxygen and can cause a fire. boeing says another mechanic noticed something wasn't right and raised the red flag and the company has paid in repairs and notified the air force. powerful storms that cause damage across oklahoma on thursday are pushing into the southeast today. severe thunderstorms are expected from louisiana to north carolina. there's a possibility of damaging winds, large hail and some isolated tornadoes. and imagine if you were in

san bernardino, california, on thursday and you saw this. that is jack. he is a 1,200 pound source soaring over a highway. a rescue helicopter had to give him a lift after he and his rider slipped down the side of a steep hill and they couldn't climb out. the horse was sedated blindfolded and brought down gently load under to a trailer and good news both the horse and rider are doing just fine. wow. >> it's a bird, it's a plane -- >> not a shot you see every day. let's go back to nbc lester holt. the excluse of interview with president trump and in the last half hour we heard about the president's decision to fire fbi director james comey. that is one part of the conversation, you have more. >> of course, two weeks ago the president marked his 100th day in office and recently made a rather interesting remark about his job as commander in chief. that we wanted to ask him about. something struck me. you in the rose garden the other day with members of the house

celebrating the passage of the health care repeal and replacement and you looked around and you said, can you believe i'm president? i'm the president. >> how am i doing? am i doing okay? i'm president. can you believe it? >> i wanted to be in your head in that moment. do you still have moments where you think, how did i get here? >> i think when you become president it is very special. when you're in the white house it's very special and i had all my republican friends who had been in politics all their lives and done a great job. they're congressmen and we had some senators, et cetera. but i did, i looked around and said, sorry, folks. can you believe it's me. and the truth is that anybody that becomes president of the united states has to every once in a while say, that's really amazing. it's an incredible thing -- >> do you feel like you're fighting for your legitimacy sometimes? your legitimacy is under attack? >> we have a very divided country. the republicans are bemind me

interview. jeff rossen has more on that. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. important warning here. if you use uber, chances are you've done it. some car pulls up and you just get in. it looks like an uber. the driver says he's from uber and is there to pick you up. now, police say dangerous predators are posing as uber drivers. and once you get in, they drive off and attack you. new cases popping up across the country. this morning, it has happened again. and the victim is sharing her story with us, to help protect you. it was past midnight in los angeles. carla says she was at this nightclub and wanted to leave. so, she ordered an uber. >> waiting for an uber outside of a club, where there's tons of cars, tons of people. i'm out, looking for a car. you want to go home. it's the end of the night. you're tired. i just saw a car out on the street that looked like an uber. the way he was out there, just waiting. and then, i got in the backseat. he asked me for the address.

and then, i fell asleep. >> reporter: seemed legit. >> yeah. >> reporter: but it wasn't really your uber. >> no. it was not my uber. >> reporter: the driver, an alleged uber imposter. parked outside the club, waiting for a woman to get in. >> i literally woke up to him in the backseat with me. and he's just banging my head against the seat. and just a very confusing thing. you're instinct is to say stop. get off me. like, you're fighting. and you're -- you know. and you realize, wow, this is not changing anything. he's still overpowering me. well, what's next? >> reporter: and he sexually assaulted you. >> yes. >> for hours. >> for three hours, yeah. >> reporter: police releasing this sketch of the suspect. desperate to catch him before he strikes again. and it turns out, the fake drivers are striking coast-to-coast. some using fake stickers to

trick you. rhode island, connecticut, ohio and louisiana. in illinois, police say this man posed as an uber driver, now charged with kidnapping and sexually assaulting two different women he picked up. >> was able to get the victims to come into his car, under the guise that he was the assigned driver. >> reporter: in georgia, police releasing this sketch of a man, accused of doing the same thing. and in texas, this suspect accused of posing as a lyft driver and killing a passenger. so, how do you avoid becoming a victim? both uber and lyft have great tips to help you out. when you order a car from either of the companies, right here on the app, it tells you information about the driver and the car. tells you the make and model of the car, gives you a picture of the driver and gives you the license plate. you want to confirm all that before getting in. safety experts say you should go an additional step. and just take a photo of the license plate. that way, if it is a bad guy,

you have a record of what car you actually got into if something happens. here's another great tip. and it's a mistake so many of us make, including me. when my ubers come, i just jump right in. and i say, here for jeff? here for jeff? and they say, yeah. if it is a bad guy, you just gave him the answer to the secret question. so, let's rewind. and here's what you want to do. don't get into the car. walk up to the car, open the door up, lean in and say, who are you here for? that way, they have to say your name. if they give you your name back, you know you're in the right place. uber and lyft, telling nbc news, they are committed to getting fake drivers off the streets. now, carla is issuing her own warning. that what happened to her can easily happen to you. why speak out about this? >> because we need to find him. this guy could be out there. he could be doing this to somebody else. he needs to be caught. and there's so many women that has so much shame, they need to realize this is not their fault and be strong and speak out

recommendation, i was going to fire comey. >> reporter: let me ask you about your termination letter to mr. comey. you write, i greatly appreciate you informing me on three separate instances that i'm not under investigation. why did you put that in there? >> he told me that. >> reporter: regards to the russian investigation? was it in a phone call? did you meet face-to-face? >> i had a dinner with him. he wanted a dinner because he wanted to stay on. at that time, he told me i was not under investigation. >> reporter: that was one time. >> once at dinner and twice during phone calls. >> reporter: did you call him? >> one case i called him. one case he called me. >> reporter: did you ask him, am i under investigation? >> i asked him, if it's possible, will you let me know if i'm under investigation. he said, you're not under investigation. >> the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but, so help you god. >> reporter: he gave sworn testimony there's an ongoing investigation into the trump campaign and possible collusion with the russian government.

you were the centerpiece of the trump campaign. was he being truthful? >> i know i'm not under investigation, me, personally. i'm not talking about campaigns or anything else. >> reporter: the senate intelligence committee wants information about your finances, your business' finance. can you tell us whether you, your family, your businesses, your surrogates have accepted any investments, any loans from russian individuals? >> yeah. i just sent a letter -- >> reporter: or institutions. >> i sent a letter to lindsey graham from one of the most prestigious law firms in the country, that i have nothing to do with russia. i have no investments in russia. none whatsoever. i don't have property in russia. i built a great company. but i'm not involved with russia. i have had deals over the years where i sold a house to a very wealthy russian many years ago.

i had the miss universe pageant, which i owned for quite a while. i had it in moscow a long time ago. other than that, i have nothing to do with russia. a lot of people give me high marks in terms of what i've done in terms of foreign policy. >> reporter: korea. you mentioned you talked to the new president, president moon in south korea. he has a different approach than this administration's approach, with regard to north korea. he favors the idea of under certain circumstances, some dialogue with kim jong-un. you have also mentioned that, as well. does this change your strategy, knowing that he has a more open orientation towards the north? >> he's more open to discussion. i don't mind discussion. but it's under certain circumstances. i can probably give you a much better answer to that in a month or two months. we're going to see what happens. >> reporter: something happening in a month? >> north korea is a very, very dangerous one for south korea,

for japan. frankly, for china, and for the rest of the world. and i think we've handled it very well, very firmly. it should have been handled by president obama. it should have been handled by other presidents, in the past. unfortunately, now, it's very far down the line. and i happen to be president. >> we've seen u.s. special forces in action in different parts of the world recently, in many ways. you're giving -- you appear to be giving the military more authority to make calls as they see fit. what's going to happen in afghanistan? >> afghanistan is always a difficult problem. it's been for many nations, no doubt about it. >> reporter: will you be adding troops in afghanistan? >> we haven't made a decision. some people would like me to. i haven't made a decision. >> reporter: do you feel like you're fighting for legitimacy sometimes? that your legitimacy is under attack? >> we have a very divided gun. the republicans are behind me. >> reporter: some say what's been proposed is not great

prison suicide, we're hearing from the fiancee of former nfl star aaron hernandez. >> she sat down with dr. phil. this morning, joe fryer has an exclusive preview. shaana is the mother of aaron hernandez's child. she got an early morning call from the prison when he was found dead last month. >> it was a cruel person playing a strike on me. >> reporter: hours earlier, she talked with aaron on the phone. a few days before, he had been acquitted of murdering two men but was serving a life sentence for another murder. a conviction he was appealing. >> i spoke to him the night before. and he was so, you know, daddy's going to be home. i can't wait to sleep in the bed with you guys. and i can't wait to just hold you and love you. >> reporter: hernandez's official cause of death is suicide. but in an interview with dr. phil airing monday and

tuesday, his fiancee is expressing doubts. does she believe he killed himself? >> she does not believe he killed himself surprisingly because the evidence is pretty overwhelming. >> reporter: she says her final conversation with hernandez ended abruptly. >> there was no monumental good-bye. no finality in what he was saying. it was, babe, got to run. they're closing the doors. >> i just know that the feedback that i was getting from our last talk had nothing to do with any suicidal thoughts. >> reporter: an inmate told authorities hernandez had mentioned a rumor, if an innovainmate has an open appeal on his case and dies in prison, he will be acquitted of the charge and deemed not qualiguilty. that's what happened this week. an emotional moment for lloyd's family. >> he's guilty. and he's going to always be

she's a part of the red hat society, which is group of ladies that are retired. her chapter is called the fun in sun divas. they get together and do theater outings and taes. she comes up every year. and every year, she likes to go to the "today" show and the plaza. i know she really wants to meet matt. when she's in florida, she uses the "today" show on what's a prompter going on in the city. if it's raining or cold or snowing, she will call me up before i leave for work, do you have your hat on? did you get your umbrella? i saw on the "today" show, i saw matt and savannah. and they were out there umbrellas on. ♪ one more time >> my mom loves patti labelle. she feels like that's her kindred sister. she looks like patti. her energy is like her. she looks like she would be part of her family. she loves how patti cooks. just one of her favorite singers

we're rounding out our special series, "manners on the mo move" today. and we've saved the last. >> mr. manners, thomas farrelly, joins us. >> thank you. good to be with you all again. many of us spend more time with our co-workers than with our families. we decided to head to the wbusy embarcadero in san francisco, a hotbed in the tech industry, to find out what issues worker there's are facing. in the shadow of the bay bridge, we set up shop. our business, getting to the bottom of the problems that employees are facing. and those who sat down for interviews had a lot to say. >> can you think back at a time when you had a job where a

situation was disrespectful. >> we worked together in a prior company. and we had a co-worker that would be cursing. >> there's this culture of meetings, that is horrendous and horrible. i got some horror stories of just, you know, various people who, would fall asleep. >> reporter: the eye-opening results of a survey, found that six in ten employees are treated rudely by a colleague at least once a month. what is the sign of a jerk in a workplace? >> do people ask him for reviews. do people look for collaborating with him on projects? if that's happening less an less, for me, those are warning signs. >> if it's someone thdemanding that you do work for them, and not having something they can help out with, that's usually a jerk. >> reporter: even in this hub for technologies, technology is complicating how we communicate. what do you think the net result of people being engaged with

technology has been? >> it's been difficult to approach someone else. it tends to escalate issues that happen because people wait until they're seriously bothered by something. they don't have the skills to then go ahead and address it. >> reporter: how do you maintain the human touch in the office? particularly with respect to communication. so, e-mail? >> the first instinct is to write like i talk. and that's different because you can see my gestures. you can see lots of body language there. we can connect eye-to-eye. so, i think the first thing is my own self-monitoring that i do. >> what to you think is lost with the lack of face-to-face interaction? >> you can't read people in an e-mail. you can't get the tone of things. in a connection is high value in a high-tech age. >> i like to tell people there's a selfish reason for having good etiquet etiquette. it helps you get along with people and get what you want. it's nice when they blend to the

point they're indistinguishable. >> many are working in open-style offices. >> open floor spaces is great for collaboration. but hard for concentrating. especially because people have different ways of the working. all the time, i encounter people tapping. drives me crazy. >> it's the kind of common sense consideration you would give to someone in your home. you wouldn't go to your significant other and chew in their ear, or asking them a question when they're focusing. and those happen constantly in the workplace. >> reporter: if you could wave a magic wand and change one thing about the way workplaces operate, when we think about the way we treat one another, what would the one thing be? >> i think it's being kind to one another. treat each other like family. >> it's unbelievable how land mines you can run into in the workplace. and sometimes people are rude. what are your takeaways from those people? >> there's some simple things we can do starting today. say hello in the morning and say

good-bye at night. we're spending all this time at night. we have spent all this time with colleagues. these little things, we're going to be absorbed in the laptop the entire day. start off with a hello. >> we do. >> so far, so good. >> you guys get an a-plus. secondly, beware of e-mail. i tell people, like we heard in the piece, it's easy to get misconstrued. if you find yourself typing the phrase, i think we have a miscommunication. >> or send an emoji. just kidding. that was for matt. >> call me. >> and the last one, it's okay to disagree in the workplace. but do it without being disagreeable. i do workshops. i tell people. this is something you use a word of resistance like except, or but, or unfortunately. somebody's going to shut down. they're going to feel disrespected. don't use those records. get across the message in a way that is respectful. >> don't microwave fish in the

that crash is is creating backups for people heading from the tri-valley to tracy. michael will be here in a moment with a look at the traffic impact as well. fire investigators are investigating two fires in the east bay that they believe were not only intentionally set but likely connected to a whole string of other fires in contra costa county this week. the others happened last night, one on wild creek, and a second in lafayette. that brings the total number to seven overnight car fires just this week that we've reported on. cars were also targeted in martinez and brentwood. now, there is some new surveillance video that could provide some clues, but the images are hard to make out. you see someone walking in the top of the frame and could be a person of interest. michael with the traffic in the tri-valley corridor coming up in just one minute.

we're also seeing breezy conditions, peninsula 50 degrees right now. 56 and 64. we are expecting to climb into the 70s but overall it's unseasonable for the most part. could see gusts ranging from 25 to possibly 30-plus hours along the peninsula and the wind should die down overnight. san francisco expecting to see a high of 61 degrees. mike? >> we're looking at overall a lighter volume of traffic, but the big deal is getting out of the area. eastbound 580 is jammed from altima five miles past the scene of that deadly crash heading to 205 and tracy. if you're headed to sacramento, do not use the route you see here. go north over the bridges.
