hours with stronger gusts. if you will celebrate mother's day early, happy mother's day day, kyra. >> thank you. >> 51 degrees in the south bay peninsula. tri-valley 48. definitely on the much chillier side. this is pretty unseasonable for this time of year. east bay 52. 5 to 7 degrees cooler than where we should be. san francisco, 49 degrees. the temperature trend is showing us warming up at least into the 60s. by the lunch hour we should get about 62 degrees for san francisco. but if you notice in the icons, it's all sunshine. not a lot of cloud cover, which is going to give way for nice clear skies, although we are seeing hazier conditions in the south bay. nice little combo of those clouds out there. but it should clear out nicely. by 11:00 a.m. timing into the 60s. expect to stay in the mid-60s, maybe even hitting a possible 66, 67, but all in all a much

cooler day ahead. a complete look at what you can expect on mother's day coming up in the forecast at 7:16. >> we'll have to stay tuned for that. 16 minutes, vianey, thanks. firefighters are battling what once was a massive five-alarm fire on the oakland emeryville border in the last two hours or so crews from multiple agencies have been able to get the fire a bit under control. it ignited just after 5:00 this morning at a condo building still under construction at 3800 san pablo avenue right next to 580. the massive fire at one point stopped traffic on the freeway. the construction crane melted at the top and there is concern at this 7:00 hour it could become more compromised and collapse on to nearby buildings. fire crews are working to stop the building itself from collapsing. that -- what you just saw -- was the flames from about an hour ago. this is what it looks like now. you can see the flames not as

present, more smoke going into the air. so they do have that fire a bit more under control than it was two hours ago. but again, buildings nearby have been evacuated because there is concern that construction crane could become more compromised, collapse on to nearby buildings. there are no injuries reported at this time. but again people have been evacuated in that area. and we will bring you the very latest on this story on all of our social platforms throughout the morning and throughout the day today. in other news, a child is in the hospital this morning ever a fire in the east bay. firefighters got the call around 2:00 this morning at a home on lockwood street near 73rd avenue, this also in oakland. when crews responded, they rescued an unresponsive child who was tropped inside the home. they were able to put out the flames and revive that child who is in serious condition in the

hospital. an arsonist is setting cars on fire night after night in driveways of quiet communities. the question this morning is when will it stop. a total of seven cars have been targeted so far. this is in walnut creek, lafayette, martinez and brentwood. the latest two cars were found burning in the streets of lafayette and walnut creek between 2:00 and 3:00 a.m. yesterday. contra costa county's fire marshal says the latest run of car fires could be related to the dozens of car fires in the area late last year. >> there are a number of things that they're doing and that connect them, for a lack of a better word, are a signature. >> they definitely are linked. she walked out of the hospital after giving birth and vanished. now 4 1/2 years later authorities say they found the santa cruz woman's body. and now they need your help figuring out what happened. 29-year-old jenny herum

graduated from santa cruz high school and was attended cabrillo college at the time of her disappearance. detectives say herum gave to a baby boy in 2012 then walked out of the maternity center never to be seen again by family or friends. early last year a couple hiking found skeletal remains that match herum's dna. and authorities are now hoping someone who saw her alive will come forward. >> we're hoping that someone may tell us, hey, yeah, we saw ms. herum in and around this area and we may be able to match that up with what information we know which can then tell us again whether or not this information is credible. >> investigators are not saying where or how she died until someone comes forward. herum's son is now 4. he's being raised by his father who investigators say has been cooperative. to a developing story out of washington, d.c. the first wave of interviews to replace ousted fbi director

james comey begin today. on the short list acting fbi director andrew plk cake, senator john cornyn, alice fisher, former u.s. attorney and new york state judge michael garcia. all candidates will meet with top officials this afternoon. fbi directors are appointed, by the way, for ten-year terms although they can, as comey was, be removed by the president. in order to get the job, they must be confirmed by the senate. now to many countries around the world still scrambling this morning from a worldwide cyber attack that is still causing mayhem. antivirus experts say a crippling malware infected 75,000 computers. some of the targets, hospitals in england, spain's largest telecom come and fedex. the hackers blocked access to the computers in exchange for a ransom. security experts say the most worrisome factor of this hack is the global reach.

>> it's not just i downloaded on my computer and my computer is vulnerable. it's i download it on my computer and my computer is now part of a network that is now going to find other computers that are vulnerable. it spreads prolifically. >> national home land security says this type of malware tip cancally spreads through e-mail phishing programs and affects windows operating systems. the alameda county sheriff's office is in mourning today after one of their deputies was killed in a car crash. deputy sroeuy khin was killed when his car was rear-ended by a commuter bess. we have more on this tragic accident. >> reporter: at the jail flags at half staff honoring deputy sroeuy khin traveling home from work. investigators say he was heading east on 580 around 7:00 a.m. when a commuter bus carrying tesla workers smashed into the

back of his vw bug. it appeared he slowed down or stopped on the highway right before the crash. >> there's sun on the horizon, all types of factors involved, with weather, roadway conditions that will be taken into consideration. >> reporter: chp officers draped and american flag over khin's body and saluted him before deputies escorted his body to the coroner's office. >> i like to give thanks to the highway patrol for their service to our employee at the scene with dignity and respect. >> reporter: the bus driver was not cited but the investigation is ongoing. tesla released a statement saying in part, we are deeply saddened by reports that there was a fatality as a result of the accident. we will lend any support that we can to authorities who are investigating the incident. >> besides all of the events and incidents that our deputy sheriffs have to deal with at work, they have to deal with the tragic loss of one of their

kir . >> welcome back. it's 7:10. a sunshiny saturday morning as we look at the golden gate bridge. 60s pretty much across the entire bay area today. winds are expected to pick up as we reach this evening. san francisco just became a pawn in a hotly contested congressional race in georgia. our fine city is the subject of a new republican ad which plays up stereotypes in an effort to paint a georgia democrat as ultraliberal. today in the bay's christie smith explains. >> hey, georgia, san francisco

just wanted to say thank you. >> reporter: the political commercial features what appears to be representations of hippies, hipsters and others in san francisco praising a democrat running for congress in georgia. it's meant to paint him as an ultraliberal out of touch with georgia voters. >> i have not seen it. >> reporter: san francisco mayor ed lee had this to say. >> i'm sure if it's his opponents, it will probably portray us in a negative light. but i say this. i think people of georgia and, in particular, this particular race, they need to register what their needs are. >> isis, they're overrated. >> reporter: ossoff is running against republican karen handle in a special election. >> they want to paint their opponent as unacceptably different, not one of us. >> reporter: jason mcdaniel is an associate professor of political science at san francisco state. >> that is a republican area, right, and they don't like nancy pelosi democrats, right?

welcome back. just shy of 7:15 on your saturday morning. we continue to follow breaking news out of oakland and the emeryville border. this is a fire that multiple agencies have responded to. at one point it was a five-alarm fire of a condo building still under construction. people evacuated throughout the area. this is at san pablo in oakland on the edge of emeryville. there is concern that the construction crane could collapse on to nearby buildings. we'll continue to follow this braking news as the morning progresses. now to elon musk. he's revealed plans of his new project that's aimed at bypassing los angeles traffic. musk shared this footage yesterday of the progress. it's called the boring company. it's digging a tunnel into space-x parking lot. he hopes to build a series of tunnels that would move on

electric skates. those cars would zip along at 125 miles per hour. l.a. county officials haven't said whether they've given musk the green light. b.a.r.t.'s warning and the number of tracks that b.a.r.t. has to run train on them. safety teams have been going door to door spreading the message to people who live near the berryessa station set to open next year. this is their message -- don't touch the tracks. >> it's extremely dangerous to go near a b.a.r.t. track. the unusual thing about santa clara county is that this is the first ground-based electrified track that we've had, so people aren't necessarily familiar with that. >> this is a look at the ten-mile extension to the berryessa station. it won't open till next year but testing begins this year. b.a.r.t. says it's ordered new trains to run on the tracks and they all need to be up and running so there's enough trains to service this station.

changes for b.a.r.t. throughout the weekend. the lake merrit to fruitvale stations will be closed today. as for tomorrow, b.a.r.t. changed its mind thanks to the warriors. b.a.r.t. has now opted to keep all stations open because the warriors host the purr spurs tw afternoon at 12:30 right there at oracle arena. let's check in with vianey arana with the weekend forecast. a good day, a good weekend to go outside or stay inside and watch the warriors? >> i would say it's a nice combo of both. you can be inside and watching the game, you can open up all the windows. it will be sunny and cool. you won't need to use the ac for the weekend. you're definitely saving cash there. not today or tomorrow. we're also expecting to keep those breezy to windy conditions in the forecast. peninsula right now about 49 degrees, 51 for the south bay. the north bay still struggling

also to get out of the 40s and into the 50s right now at 47 degrees. 49 for san francisco, 52 in the east bay, but at least the skies are showing clear conditions right now. we have this trough that will keep us nice and cool. that nice breezy on-shore flow through the weekend. that will kick up our winds. if we fast forward and look ahead to 12:00, that's when we'll see the winds dying down a bit. 11 miles per hour, also in the south bay about 1 1. so not really a factor. but if we fast forward through tonight right around dinnertime, the wind gusts do pick up around 4:00, 5:00. it picks up in san francisco about 20 miles per hour. half moon bay also at about 26 miles per hour. even down here in the south bay at about 17, fast forward into the overnight hours. expect to see gusts that could bring us between 20 and 30 miles per hour winds coming up from

the west. just in time for early morning mother's day brunch expect to keep the windy conditions. if you have plans to have brunch along the coastline, keep that in mind because it is expected to keep the breezy conditions in there, which means, yes, your allergies are going to be acting up out there. trees, high pollen count for today. grass is moderate but weeds and mold are low for today. the microclimate highs will remain in the 60s. milpitas, 65 and even over in the east bay expecting to see 60s. oakland a high of 66. danville 69. half moon bay 57 and expecting to see the wind gusts picking up by mid-afternoon. overall 50s in the san francisco area. embarcadero high of 59, but san francisco should be hitting the 60, 61-degree mark. in the north bay, napa if you're

heading up there to do wine tasting, sonoma, napa, a gorgeous day. keeping the 70s in the forecast. but heading to the beach, it will definitely be a little cold out there. for today expect to see the 50s in the forecast. if you're heading over to santa cruz and maybe getting an earlier start on the mother's day celebration, you won't have any issues out there when it comes to the sun. 59 degrees by 1:00, by 2:00, 51 degrees, warming up to 55, 57. lake tahoe expecting to see nice temperatures, but unfortunately we're seeing a combination of a few snow/rain showers in the forecast, and that's at about 1:00, 2:00. if you do plan on driving up there and hanging out there, please do keep that in mind and check out the road conditions. mother's day looking gorgeous, but on the breezier side expecting upper 50s and 60s for tomorrow. over the next seven days a high of about 60 degrees for

an older musician once gave a younger eddie gale a piece of advice. >> i introduce mr. eddie gale. >> reporter: something this legendary jazz trumpet player still follows to this very day. >> he said, man, just trust me. any time you see your name in print or something you play with or whatever, hold on to it. concert town hall in new york. >> reporter: that was more than 50 years and five volumes of clippings ago. such things happen when you've been as good as long as eddie has. still, he doesn't need to read his story to remind him how it all started. as a young boy in brooklyn, with his very first horn. >> when i got a trumpet, i worked in the day, know, and played music at night. i would go to the jam sessions and ask, can i sit in? can i come in?

>> reporter: eddie has traveled the world since playing his distinctive style of trumpet. recording albums, headlining shows and backing up jazz legends. eddie has owned a lot of horns in the process, but never forgets the thrill of the first one. >> who played the instrument here? you play an instrument? >> reporter: which is what this day is all about. working with a group called united peace relief, eddie is giving away trumpets, 100 of them. >> it's free for them. they don't have to pay one dime. >> reporter: eddie has spent years working closely with young people. it's the reason in the mid-1970s then san jose mayor norm mineta gave him the title ambassador of jazz. it's something eddie wears very proudly. >> i want everybody to make a sound with a trumpet in this room. >> reporter: music has been good to eddie. and he knows it can be good for others, too.

and the transamerica pyramid ahead of a mild saturday. you can see that american flag whipping in the background. it's going to be windy as the wind picks up towards our saturday evening. thanks so much for joining us. i'm kira klapper. vianey arana has a look at the micro climb forecast. you're being kind to us mothers for the mother's day forecast. >> if you plan on wearing a dress, make it not a flowy one, because it will be on the breezy to windy side. if you have brunch planned for tomorrow morning, keep that in mind. we are expecting to keep 60s in the forecast overall. we'll climb into the upper 60s. but the weekend is looking good. the 89 not in that forecast but the next sen days expect to keep showers in the forecast for areas in the east, that just means the santa cruz mountains. keeping in mind that the northwesterly winds will be picking up by later this evening at about 7:00 just in time as

you head out to dinner expect to see wind gusts possibly between 25 and 30 miles per hour. so definitely keep that in mind as we head into the later part of the evening but at least we'll have a nice sunny day ahead. i'll have a closer lock at exactly what you can expect heading into your mother's day forecast coming up at about 7:45. >> we'll stay tuned for that. we want to take you back to the former five-alarm fire. this is the view from our sky ranger. a condo building still under construction at 3800 san pablo avenue right next to 580. we want to take you back, though, to about two hours ago. here's look at the fire earlier. huge flames. it ignited just after 5:00 this morning. because of the proximity to the freeway, the fire started traffic for a period of time. there was concern that the building could collapse and the construction crane could collapse on to nearby buildings.

a 7-year-old relative. the sentencing phase begins on tuesday. a follow-up now to claims that the contra costa district attorney misspent campaign funds on himself. on thursday grand jurors found mark peterson used campaign funds to pay for dinners, movies and a host of other personal things. during an emergency meeting yesterday morning, fellow prosecutors with the contra costa county district attorney's association board gave a no confidence vote against him. heed always mitted to the claims last year but said he borrowed the money and meant to pay it back. grand jurors want peterson ousted. a proposal to provide more help for homeless children in san francisco. mayor ed lee announced yesterday that he wants to expand a current program that provides child care services for homeless families. the biggest change under the mayor's proposal is that children under the age of 5 would be eligible. right now it only serves

children under the age of 3. it's a costly proposal, a $2.1 million expansion that mayor lee says is necessary. >> children of homeless families who we know have even a harder time even have a stable life to be able to succeed in education. >> the mayor's office says the proposal is the city's latest investment to eliminate homelessness in san francisco families. from sacramento to china, governor brown is on an international mission to promote one of his signature issues. the governor will travel to china next month as part of a week-long mission to promote clean energy. once there, he'll attend an international energy conference as well as tour areas of china that have pledged to limit global warming. china is now outpacing the u.s. in transitioning to cleaner energy sources. all right. apparently you can go for it. you can get that double double

animal style because the in-n-out burger is open once again in livermore. turns out the food may not have been to blame for making nine people sick. those nine people were college softball players. they reported flu-like symptoms back on wednesday. they said they got sick, so in-n-out closed to investigate. now their coach says some of the players were sick before eating at in-n-out. after a thorough cleaning, good news, the store has reopened as of yesterday. it is 7:36. much more ahead on "today in the bay." about a marathon at at&t park. park.

today we are off to a gorgeous start. we are expecting to keep cool nice temperatures across the bay area. definitely unseasonable, though. this gorgeous shot overlooking half moon bay thanks to our weather yound ground cameras.

expecting to see a lot of people out and about today especially because it's mother's day weekend right now peninsula 49 degrees, tri-valley 48 and in the south bay 51, now san francisco also feeling a little bit chilly. i know yesterday we had some cooler temps. it's going to be very similar to the temperatures that you saw yesterday. and right now the doppler radar, well, we are seeing this breezy on shore flow, we have this trough that's working hard to keep us cool. breezy and windy especially along the coastline. we can expect to see those winds picking up this evening as well. we fast forward through about the lunch hour, we start to see the winds die down in san francisco. eight lk. but don't let that fool you because if we fast forward if you have plans to eat out to dinner tonight, 5:30 we see the winds picking up yet again at 20 miles per hour in san francisco. and san jose at 17 miles per hour. now overnight we'll keep the wind gusting between anywhere 25 and 30 plus miles per hour.

unfortunately as we head into sunday we'll keep those breezy conditions. so if you have plans to take your mom out to an early morning breakfast please keep that in mind especially if you're going to be along the beach area. no hats, keep the hats out of the forecast for tomorrow. then we'll see the winds die down in the afternoon and picking up yet again by dinnertime by 5:00 tomorrow. tomorrow's dinner with mom is also going to be a little bit on the windy side. today's pollen report, though, unfortunately we are still seeing high tree pollen, weeds are low and the grass is moderate, mold is low. so you'll be out and about in some parks today. be sure to take that allergy medication with you. today's forecast, low 60s for the marngt jority of the bay ar. cupertino 66 as we head over to the east bay expect to see upper 60s in the area, walnut creek at 71, concord 72, danville 69 and oakland at 66 degrees. half moon bay today is going to be a little bit chilly at 57, daly city also staying in the

50s, then outer sunset 58, so the san francisco area really sticking to the upper 50s and lower 60s. in the north bay, though, it's going to be some nice weather out there, santa rosa high of 69, napa could climb into the 70s, point reyes also in the 50s. let's look ahead for tomorrow. let's talk about mother's day. we're expecting to be off to a partly cloudy start by 9:00 a.m. 52 degrees for the bay, inland at about 55. definitely a little bit chilly there early on. we'll stick to the 60s all day long. partly cloudy skies. we'll keep the wind in the forecast for the afternoon hour, west-southwesterly winds will be at about 10 to 20 miles per hour. then dinnertime we start to sew an increase in that cloud cover as well. now, another thing we do have a couple of models showing the chance of a few showers mainly for eastern areas like santa cruz area so they do have a chance of seeing showers early on sunday morning. 60 degrees as we head into the start of the work week, 61, then tuesday we do have this weak

==kira/cu== welcome back. here's a live look outside from our sky ranger. this is at emeryville along the border with oakland. a five-alarm massive fire is now contained. multiple station crews are -- have been responding to this for the last nearly three hours. it's a condo building that is still under construction. there was concern that it could collapse, that the construction crane could collapse on to nearby buildings. nearby buildings were evacuated, but again that fire at 3800 san pablo avenue right off 580 is now contained. now to the purchase of your lifetime. and you better be careful.

buying a home is not only expensive but it can be tricky. we discovered a gap that could mislead you when it comes to your home inspection. nbc bay area responds to a livermore couples costly experience with an inspector. consumer investigator chris chmura. >> reporter: some home inspectors are failing consumers yet they get a pass from state regulators thanks to a surprising lack of standards and oversight. >> four bedrooms, 2 1/2 bath. and 2300 square feet. >> reporter: lindsey and her husband's home is their dream house. >> we were very excited. first house. we just got married. >> reporter: but that homeowner honeymoon faded with the first rain. >> so this one was pushed out at the top, then rain was coming in and leaking all on the window and on the frame. >> reporter: the glass panes in three upstairs windows were

loose. >> this one was where the glass was pushing completely out. you could put your hand outside. >> reporter: lindy was surprised to find an obvious flaw because after she bought the house she hired a home inspector. his report gave the windows the highest rating, acceptable condition. >> it was basically $800wasted. >> reporter: she asked for him to pay repairs and refund his fee. she can take him to small claims court but can't ask the state to step in because home inspectors aren't licensed in california. >> which the only unregulated part of the home buying experience. >> reporter: new legislation to license home inspectors just like most others who help you buy a house. your real estate agent, mortgage broker, attorney title agent aprizer surveyor locksmith are all licensed. if there's a dispute, youing challenge their license. you can see reimbursement for violations. none of that applies to home inspectors. >> there's no professionalism and there's no sense of basic

standards what it means to be a home inspector. >> reporter: we combed through yelp and found that they averaged 4 1/4 through 5 stars. one man said there are enough bad home inspections to set state standard for who is inspecting houses. >> you print out a form from the internet, you call it a home inspection business. >> reporter: lindsey ultimately paid $2500 to replace the leaky windows. she then asked us to hold the inspector canable. he declined our request for an interview. by text he said he had no idea if lindsey's window panes were loose, he said he looked at the windows but touching the glass is not standard operating procedure. he said that lindy should have double chicked his work to check the condition of the property. lindsey disagrees. the way she sees it, she paid him to deliver a comprehensive report and he didn't. but he isn't budging. he's keeping his fee. >> at a minimum, i would have liked my money back for the
