worldwide cyber attack called wanna cry could get worse. criticized the u.s. national security agency saying it weaponized a weakness in windows software and allowed it to be stolen by hackers. here's the details on this massive cyber attack. >> reporter: they are calling this on a worldwide attack on a unprecedented scale. there are 200,000 victims in at least 150 countries and warning it could get worse when people get back to work and turn on their computers. >> it's unprecedented, beyond anything we've seen before. the level of infection and the amount of damage potentially inflicting. >> reporter: britain's national health computers were the first to be affected forcing hospital emergency rooms to be shut down, stopping surgeries. doctors and hospital staff

unable to access patient records or anything else on their computer networks. britain's prime minister theresa may said the system is now returning to normal. the virus known as wanna cry spread to russian banks, universities in china and federal express in the united states. the ransom ware affects computers through a bad link through e-mail. it spreads quickly throughout an organization's network, locking computers, enkrifting files and demanding $300 in bitcoin to unlock them. this morning the blogger who helped slow down the attack warning to update computers fast saying it's only a time before the cyber thieves get around that kill switch. nbc news, london. very disturbing. donald trump spending this mother's day weekend on university campuses giving his first commencement address while the department of justice worked in a frenzy to find the next fbi director despite democrats vowing to fight the president's candidate tooth and nail until

they get answers or former fbi director james comey's firing. they are calling for a special prosecutor to head the trump-russia investigation. that sentiment come inside sides with polls that find 78% back an independent commission or special prosecutor to oversee the probe. 15% saying the investigation should be led by congress. while 29% say they approve of the president's decision to fire comey, 38% disapprove of comey's termination. another 32% of those polled said they didn't know enough to say. the president's standing has remained through the comey controversy with 39% of the public approving his work in office compared to 54 who disapprove. the question, can the president put last week's set of controversies behind him as he narrows the list of potential new candidates for fbi director? let's bring in tracie potts who is live in washington.

tell us where we start now on the new fbi boss. >> reporter: they have eight candidates who were interviewed over the weekend. the president will talk to the top few once they whittle down the list. a couple of federal judges, politicians, one current, one former. president john cornyn and congressman rogers who has got the endorsement of fbi agents association. democrats and republicans are warning the president against picking a politician considering the highly politicized russia investigation they will oversee. speaking of that investigation, you know, the president asked his former director james comey if he was a target. he later fired comey who was heading the investigation into his campaign. now the former director of national intelligence says he's concerned about the checks and balances in the system. >> i think in many ways our

institutions are under assault, both externally. that's the big news here, the russian interference in our election system. and i think as well our institutions are under assault internally. >> internally from the president? >> exactly. >> reporter: two big questions. does the president have tapes as he suggested he possibly might have of his conversation with former director comey in if so, congress wants those turned over. democrats are pushing for a subpoena. the other big question, will comey come here and testify? he said no to doing it behind closed doors but is apparently interested in testifying in an open public hearing. >> certainly a lot to a watch at the start of this week. nbc's tracie potts for us. tracie, thank you. with the fallout from comey's firing not coming to an end any time soon, "saturday night live" was all too happy to jump in on the anniversary lampooning with nbc lester holt and donald trump revealing the

he's incredibly concerned about anything and everything around him. i think this was a message to south korea after the election. and so what we're going to do is continue to tighten the screws. >> nbc live in beijing. janice, given the new president, how is south korea reacting now? >> reporter: well, it is a test for south korea's new president. he's been in power for less than a week and already north korea is testing the the relationship and his commitment as he pledged to have stronger interkorean ties. kim jong-un supervising and all celebrating, releasing dozens of videos of the launch. military targets in the pacific including guam. analysts believe this is an intermediate range missile. they are looking at the altitude it reached, some 1300 miles

before dropping into the sea of japan. this does put the pressure on moon jae-in. he on day one of his presidency said he was open to negotiations with pyongyang. that was echoing what president trump said. a couple days ago a top north korean envoy to the united states also said the regime was open to talks. but this seems to be veering in a different direction. analysts believe that pyongyang is making advances in their weapons program with this latest ballistic missile, and it seems to suggest maybe north korea for the time being is more focused on technology than diplomacy. frances. >> nbc janice frayer. thank you. in florida, the highway patrol arrest add man after a heated incident on tape. >> he almost ran me off. >> that man is accusing the van of cutting him off. police say it was him who caused

the accident. he sped in front of the van and slammed the brakes. he smashed in the van's driver's side window and sped off after the tirade. they charged him with driving with suspended license and leaving the scene of a crash. in charlottesville, virginia, dozens of demonstrators carrying torches gathered at a monument of general robert e. lee. they are protesting plans to remove it. white nationalist richard spencer led the group saturday. they chanted racist slogans like, quote, all white lives matter. at one point praising russia. eventually counter-protests and scuffles broke out. no one was arrested. last night counter-protesters came to the park and held a candlelight vigil against hate. >> time for a look at weather and severe thunderstorms with looming heat wave. nbc meteorologist bill karins is

find wannacry cyber ransom worm. nancy is following it all. tell us more how it could affect markets this morning. >> reporter: affecting computer networks in 150 countries. however, cyber security stocks are rising sharply in the wake of ransomware attack which disrupted factories, hospitals and retailers and is believed to have used technology stolen from the national security agency. meanwhile elon musk revealed his newest business venture is up to. a warning, may cause you to get sick to your stomach. pictures from the boring company who started digging transportation tunnels under los angeles. musk says the tunnels will be earthquake proof but says be careful when watching the video because it may cause motion sickness and even seizures. today is the 20th anniversary of amazon.com's ipo.
