office when the worm hit, but they will be this morning. >> we were watching asia earlier this morning for the same reason. folks are logging on to their comperts for the first time since the weekend there. the attack uses malware to encrypt people's data. if you turn on your pc and you see this, that's the ransomware. your data is locked up unless you pay the bad guys. as many as 200,000 computers were hit this weekend. we saw it first in great britain. in hours, it was in more than 100 countries. the wanna cry worm hits pcs that run windows xp. that operating system is so old, microsoft doesn't even support it anymore. microsoft did issue an emergency patch and antivirus companies have umidated their software as well, but bottom line, you should not be running an obsolete operating system on your computer. the other twist to the sory

is the exploit was discovered and used by our national security agency, which then managed to lose it to hackers. worse, it's just one of the many tools that nsa lost in that attack. this is exactly what apple said would happen when the fbi, led by james comey, demanded apple create a back door in the iphone operating system following the san bernadino attacks. apple said no. apple said the government might lose control of the key to that back door which is exactly what happened with this new worm. we'll continue to watch the spread. as we were saying earlier,ish rr been knocked down. so far so good, but an internet worm is like a human virus. one computer can then affect very many. >> thanks for the update there. we appreciate it. >> 5:02. taking a live look at the u.s. capitol where democrats turning up the pressure to bring in a special prosecutor to investigate white house ties to

russia. it's shaping up as yet another week of controversy for president trump. over the weekend, the justice department interviewed eight candidates to replace james comey. while the search continues for his replacement, comey may speak tomorrow at a public hearing on russia's interference on the election. both sides of the aisle are demanding transparency, especially if the president secretly taped conversations with comey. >> we have to make sure the tapes don't disappear. >> the president these to back up. we need to call comey and get to the bottom of all this. >> president trump is scheduled to make his fist big overseas trip this week. >> let's get you caught up on a developing story. a late night shooting on an east bay freeway again leaves two people hurt. this happened on interstate 880 in hayward. according to the chp, it happened just after 9:00 last night. police tell us a gray toyota

tacoma was going southbound on 880, and that's when another car fired gunshots at the driver's side of the tacoma. two out of three people inside of the car were hit by the bullets. they suffered injuries but they're not considered to be life threatening. right now, the chp is looking for the shooter and only has limited information. this is an ongoing investigation. if you have information to help out the case, please contact the chp. >> authorities and lawmakers will lay out a new plan to crack down on freeway shootings along a busy east bay highway corridor. they call for cameras to line the route. an alert would be sent to chp in seconds. there have been at least 30 freeway shootings in contra costa county in the last year and a half. >> an investigation into what caused a massive fire at an east bay construction site continues this morning. firefighters are canvassing the

scene in emeriville still, checking for hot spot there. crews safely dismantled an unstable crane damaged in the five-alarm fire we reported on early sad morning. the mangled crane was in danger of toppling over into homes and power lines. this is the second time in less than a year that the same building has been burned. >> the palo alto unified school district is under fire for allowing a student who was found guilty of sexual assault twice to continue attending class. a 17-year-old athlete sexually assaulted one girl and then another girl roughly a year later. he was 15 at the time of the first incident and the case is supposed to remain confidential, but both victims believe their attacker should have been expelled or at least not allowed to continue playing sports there. >> life in prison or the death penalty? today, the defense team for the man convicted of murdering 15-year-old sierra lamar will

begin trying to spare him from execution. last week, a jury found antolin garcia torres guilty of first degree murder. today, the prosecution and defense will face off in a special hearing. new court documents show both sides plan to bring in psychologists to interview and evaluate torres. his childhood is almost certain to be brought up, including his father, who was convicted on 17 counts of child molestation, but volunteers who searched for sierra for years say a troubled past is no excuse for what he kid to the morgan hill teen. >> everybody has rough childhoods. a lot of people were poor, have gone through a lot of othings that others don't even know about, but we're still walking around law-abiding citizens. >> experts say sierrsierra's pa will be prime witnesses for the prosecution in the sentencing phase. >> more crime on b.a.r.t. to tell you about. a group of teenagers caught by police and accused of attacking

a man at a b.a.r.t. station. they battered the man at a train. they ran to a noorb neighborhood. when police arrived, but did not get away. four where cited for battery and given prohibition orders. the fifth teenager wasn't involved. part of highway 17 is going to be closed this morning as caltrans crews are repairing the guardrails there. the number 2 northbound lane will be closed from 9:30 this morning until 2:00 in the afternoon. keep that in mind if you're driving around 17. drivers shouldn't expect delays longer than about 15 minutes. it is 5:07 as you get ready to head out on this monday morning. we see a few clouds over san francisco, but we start out with some cool temperatures and i'm going to show you the wind speeds we're expecting as we go through the day. it starts out nice and calm. still breezy in san francisco and along the koesz. as we go into the lung lunchtime hour, winds at 10 to 15 miles

per hour. in san francisco, 15 to 20. it will be a brezy day, looking at the high temperatures slightly cooler than average. up to 72 in santa rosa and concord. 69 in livermore, and morgan hill today will be up to 68 degrees. as we go to the next several days, a warm-up on the way after a slight chance of rain. i'll talk more about all of that in about three minutes, and mike has a note for this afternoon. >> that's right. i'm looking ahead because right now, look at these speed sensors. no surprise for the peninsula, the east bay, or tri-valley. we have slowing for 580 out of the altamont, but that's predictable and so is a nice drive down the east shore freeway. the transit systems also operating without delay. b.a.r.t., muni, vta. a note for vta, there will be minor reroutes on the outskirts of town because of the amgen

it is 5:12, and as we get a live look outside at palo alto, we start out with clear skies and cool temperatures. the temperature trend for the day starts out in the upper 50s and then as we go into the early afternoon hours, into the upper 60s. not bad, but our average high is 72. we'll go above this and beyond as we go toward the end of the week. a look at that coming up in four minutes. and your average speed for the north bay is the limit.

maybe a little even higher than the speed limit. great travel times. we'll show you how things are starting to build a bit a little farther east. mike, kari, thank you very much. new thissing, at least one firefighter is being treated after responding to a house fire in antioch. at least one of the firefighters was shocked by an unprotected electrical circuit. also somebody in the home was stealing power. the house was badly damaged. the fliems even ended up threatening the home next door. everybody was able to get out, and investigators say somebody could be facing felony charges for stealing power and putting firefighters' lives at risk. you see the dog there, at one point, the homeowner's dog went missing and was ultimately returned to the family. >> 5:13. a bus crashes into a small store in southern california and surveillance cameras caught it all. it happened in glendale yesterday. the driver accidentally hit the

this down early this morning. after the fire broke out at a house on 24th and mclaughlin, firefighters say the flames were on the first and second floors of the house and worked up to the attic. nobody was injured, but two people were forced out of the home. some drivers passing by saw the fire and pulled over to see how they could help. >> we saw it. we stopped and talked to the family and helped them out and gave them water then we stayed for a bit. and until the fire trucks came. >> homeowners say the home was being remodeled at the time before the fire. we still don't know how it started. >> we could more today about the suspect connected to a string of arsons in contra costa county. >> bob redell is joining us with what authorities are revealing so far. investigators believe they have the guy behind at least seven car fires in the last week. >> correct, sam and laura. seven fires, car fires here in contra costa county last week. but the contra costa county fire

protection district believes this man is connected to many more. that's why he faces 43 arson charges. later today, the fire protection district is expected to release his name what we know so far about the man is that he's 36 years old. lives here in the county. a special arson task force helped arrest him saturday morning. this is early saturday morning, at a mcdonald's in benicia, less than a mile away from another car fire that had just been set that morning. he now sits in jail with bail set at more than $3 billion. all the recent car fires in the east have a common thread that connect them that suggest they were started by the same person. what that commonality is, investigators are not saying right now. reporting live in pleasant hill. bob redell, today in the bay. >> thank you for the latest there. 5:32 right now. grieving friends will hold a prayer service tonight in fremont for a high school senior

killed in a crash that left her mother seriously injured. the 18-year-old was killed when police say a car driven by her mother struck another car while making a turn on fremont boulevard. it happened early yesterday morning. friends say the james logan high school senior had just been picked up after prom. last night, friends visiting the accident scene were overcome with grief. >> she was like the funniest person ever. i want her to be remembered as a person that will always help someone and a person that will be there for you no matter what. >> police say two other men in the car in their 20s suffered minor injuries. police have made no arrests but say they're looking into whether alcohol played a role in the crash. >> people in san francisco's russian hill remain on edge after a chaotic rolling gun battle played out right outside of their doors. this happened on polk street by

lombard. it had people there scrambling for cover as gunmen in two cars were shooting at each other while cruising down the street. shell casings littered the street afterwards. >> i heard what i thought was a firecracker and then i heard another one. there's about 12 in total. coming down polk street right here. >> frightening scene there. one shot, as you see in the video, did hit a windshield of a parked car. so far, police have made no arrests. >> b.a.r.t. police arrested a man for indecent exposure in san leandro. station agents saw him saturday morning and put him under arrest. officers ordered him to stay away from the station before taking him to county jail. the man was already on probation for a past sexual offense. >> happening today, santa clara valley water district members will consider ways to address the problems spawned by homeless encampments. last year, there was a special committee formed to develop ideas to try to tackle homeless encampment issues. the board is considering using

income from rental properties to cover clean-up costs and also the idea of using tiny homes on wheels to house some of the homeless population there. >> a fremont regional park set to be open today after be closed to the public. it was closed after two neighbors sued the regional park district. they were concerned about traffic and parking. the district agreed to upgrade the roads as part of the settlement. >> the east bay regional park district also says its fire season starts today. they're preparing for fires in 20,000 acres of park land. the district's fire chief says grass, trees, and brush grew a lot because of the however winter rain. the dense greenery could fuel potentially intense fires. we're coming up on 5:36 as we see mostly clear sunrise looking across the golden gate

six minutes. >> and the good news, look at that. travel times over toward the bay bridge at a minimum right now. a smooth dry toward the metering lights which are on. we have a different situation on the peninsula, though. an update for that crash coming up. >> thank you very much, kari and mike. 5:41. new fallout over the oroville dam crisis. the sacramento bee is reporting former governor pat brown misled santa rosaered about the cost of building the dam. he also ignored recommendations to delay the construction. in february, a damaged spillway at the damage forced thousands of people to evac what oroville and nearby communities. the current mess was caused by construction problems 60 year uz go. >> fire inspections start today for oakland hills homeowners. fire inspectors will check homes with high fire risks. this means vegaround the homes has to be cleared.

properties that don't pass today will be checked again next month. homeowners face a $300 fee if there are still problems then. well, the state of california facing a bit of an expensive problem right now. driver's licenses no longer meet federal standards that require more documentation and specialized markings. now there's a 2020 deadline to those standards and california has to spend about $220 million to accommodate the changes and make that happen. the governor's new revised budget does include money to kickstart the process. and speaking of california's new posed budget, it will reportedly include money to cover legal assistance for immigrants facing deportation. governor brown is setting aside about $15 million for legal counseling. ipgrnts rights groups praise the plan, calling it a victory for families. opponents question the use of taxpayer money especially with threat of cuts in taxpayer money

for sanctuary cities. >> president trump's controversial travel ban is headed back to court. as core is -- judges must decide whether the ban violates the constitution. the ninth circuit blocked the president's original travel ban and now a different set of judges on the same panel will consider the revised version. new this morning, north korea says that a new missile it tested over the weekend can carry nuclear weapons a very long distance. that missile was tested on sunday the nation's leader, kim jong-un promising more tests. the threats aren't anything new. but the progress here is. some experts and officials in tokyo believe the missile, this one, may have the longest range in north korea's arsenal. >> the white house spoke out against the latest missile test, calling it a flagrant menace. >> good morning. really surprising, actually.

a significant change, too, for the policy of the united states. remember, after a previous missile test in earl april. secretary of state rex tillerson and the state department said, quote, united states has spoken enough about north korea. we will have no further comment. that was really blunt talk. but after this latest test this weekend, the white house issued a lengthy response, including a mention of russia. the white house said with the missile impacting so close to russian soil, in fact, closer to russia than japan, the president cannot imagine that russia is pleased. it's not clear why the white house intentionally brought up russia at a time it's trying so hard to distance itself from russia. perhaps it's trying to bring more pressure on north korea. >> a growing number of members of congress called for the release of recordings of the president talk to james comey. we don't know if the tapes

welcome back. 5:54 right now on your monday morning. sexual assault and drug abuse, just two of the many violations that land hundreds of california doctors on probation every year. >> we discovered your doctor doesn't have to tell you a word about it. here's bigad shiban. >> good morning. when it comes to investigating complaints about potentially dangerous doctors, the state has its own sort of government watchdog called the california medical board. but our past reporting revealed serious concerns about how california lets some doctors off the hook, even when their errors

might have hurt or even killed a patient. we're revealing how you could be left in the dark even after your doctor is caught making a deadly mistake. california's more than 110,000 doctors, 609 are on probation. their offenses include deadly medical errors, drug use, and sexual assault against patients. now, that information already gets posted to the medical board's website, but it's up to patients to find it. senator jerry hill of san mateo is now proposing legislation that would require doctors to disclose their probation status directly to patients. in february, top leadership at the medical board spoke out against the plan saying that kind of notification would harm the doctor/patient relationship. but just last month, the medical board softened its stance saying it now supports doctors disclosing their probation status to patients but only for the most serious violations. the board still continues to face criticism over how it disciplines doctors.
