those who are logging on only finding that the virus is still spreading. the cyberattack, unprecedented. this morning carmaker nissan and hitachi struggling. the biggest cyberattack in history started friday. freezing computers at britain's national health service forcing emergency rooms across the country to close and even stopping surgeries. the malware known as wannacry causing chaos across the globe. 200,000 systems in 150 countries. germany's national rail and the russian interior ministry and fedex in the u.s. >> we've seen the rise of ransomware being the principle threat in the last two years but nothing on this scale. >> reporter: the virus first infects a computer through a bad

link in an e-mail and then quickly spreads through an organization's network encrypting files and demanding $300,000 in bitcoin. the cyberthieves used a hole in microsoft security that was made public by hackers who stole it from the national security agency last summer. over the weekend, this 22-year-old british cyberresearcher, known as malware tech says he accidentally found a kill switch for the virus. >> i was surprised it wasn't as sophisticated as i expected. >> reporter: he along with american darion huss slowed the attack, but didn't stop it. >> anybody could modify their code and rerelease it in the wild. >> reporter: the only way to guard against it it, experts say, update your computer software and avoid e-mails with strange links. chinese officials detected a new version of this virus that spreads more quickly, they say. they also say it isn't affected

by that kill switch. some industry experts say this looks like the work of russian speaker cybercriminals and intelligence agencies around the world are investigating this. they say they simply don't know at this point who's behind it. matt, savannah? >> kelly, thank you very much. sean henry is a former executive assistant dreirector with the fbi and now chief security officer. sean, good to see you. good morning. >> good morning, matt. >> i understand this is complicated because these codes are coming from different sources in different places. so, what's it going to take for cybersecurity experts to track down who's doing this? >> well, tracking down who's doing it is going to be very, very difficult. what you've got is hackers who have accessed these networks. they're using this code and it may be reconstituted and utilized by different organizations. once that code is out there, hackers can grab it. they can make some changes. it makes it much more difficult to detect. and then they relaunch it and they actually impact additional

organizations, even some who may be protected. they're also using bitcoin which allows them to remain anonymous. when people are actually paying these ransoms, it's difficult, if not impossible for law enforcement to actually track it, matt. >> my question was just that. what is the advice here? should people pay this ransom to get their documents back or not? what are they supposed to do? >> you know, ideally, you have your system protected. you don't suffer this type of attack and you don't have to pay. but, of course, what we're seeing here, particularly througho against asia is attacks against software that is not updated. they have pirated software or using legacy software that is not supported. microsoft has put out a patch and people have to get to that and they have to go to microsoft and download that immediately, savannah. >> let's make sure we can say this in the simplest, most possible terms. >> three things you would urge all device users and computer users to do today?

>> thei simplest thing is go to microsoft and download the patch. go to microsoft and anybody who has that operating system. make sure your network or system is actually backed up. if you are infected and your system is locked up, you're going to be able to reconstitute your network and recapture your data and start over again new. the third thing is, matt, you have to learn to detect and get security software that detects that types of attacks because the attackers are going to constantly make changes and even if you find today a patch, they're going to exploit new vulnerabilitie vulnerabilities. you have to make sure you have security software to identify these attacks before your system gets locked up. >> i'm no expert. don't click on the funky links. appreciate it. to the white house now and the search for a replacement for ousted fbi director james comey. the controversy over his firing is not quieting down in washington. we have complete coverage. nbc national correspondent peter alexander starting us off this

morning. peter, good morning. >> good morning. you said it. president trump now searching for a new fbi director and a senior administration director telling nbc news the president has not yet conducted any in-person interviews that he is expected to meet with a few finalists but president trump said this could be a fast decision suggesting he could make the call before his first foreign trip later this week. this morning, less than a week after fbi director james comey ebrupt dismissal including andrew mccabe and senator john cornyn. on capitol hill, wide agreement the next director should not be a partisan politician. >> i think it's now time to pick somebody that comes from within the ranks or such a reputation that has no political background at all that can go into the job on day one. >> reporter: weighing in, the group representing current and former agents backing mike rogers who once served as an fbi special agent himself. >> he understands the agency.

he understands the agent families. the agent -- what we do for a living. the life and death situations that agents are put in. the investigative efforts. >> reporter: heading up the search, rod rosenstein and attorney general jeff sessions who pledged to recuse himself from any russia investigation, but now will help choose. all from the president's twitter storm on friday. james comey better hope there are no tapes of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press. the president refusing to talk about any possible tapes over the weekend. >> what about the idea in a tweet you said that there might be tape recordings. >> that i can't talk about. i won't talk about that. all i want is for comey to be honest and i hope he will be and i'm sure he will be, i hope. >> if they're not provided willingly, congress should subpoena them and if they're not in existence. another fabrication by the president, he needs to come clean about it.

russian interference in our election system. and i think, as well, our institutions are under assault internally. >> spoke to some white house officials this morning. they do not have any immediate response to that comment, but several of the president's top cabinet officials are backing him up. the u.n. ambassador nikki haly saying he can hire or fire anybody he wants. rex tillerson said he is "devoted to help the president achieve his direobjectives." >> thank you. steve cornacky is with us now with a closer look at the contenders for the next fbi chief. let's talk about who may be on top of the list and who some of the dark horses might be. >> a big list perspective candidates. more than a dozen. a couple different categories we can put these in. first of all, politicians. now, this would be very unusual. basically unprecedented tahave an fbi director who comes from the ranks of elected officials.

john cornyn is supposedly part of this process. the criticism here is simply there is supposed to be a wall between the fbi and between politics. this could be a fight if trump wept with any of these names. much more traditional, somebody who fits the mold we've come to think of. a department of justice background and a background on a federal bunch. michael garcia from new york. he fits both of those. that is somebody traditional you might look at for this job. lindsey graham said you want someone who can get a running start. someone who knows the fbi or who is already there or will have that kind of background. andrew mccabe is in the mix. the problem could be the question of loyalty to trump. he came out and backed comey last week. would trump want to turn around and give him a ten-year term. mike rogers, the former congressman and also former fbi agent and he was endorsed over the weekend by the association representing fbi agents. that might be a name, as well, to keep an eye on. >> well done, mr. kornacki,

thank you very much. tightening the screws on nort korea after its newest test of a ballistic missile. the regime releasing new video overnight. the launch supervised by kim jong-un himself. bill neely with the latest now. good morning. >> good morning, savannah. another week, another launch from the north koreans, but this one was different. from a start, it didn't fail and it appears to be a new type of rocket with a longer range. one that north korea says can carry a nuclear warhead. it was north korea's seventh test this year of a missile it says can reach u.s. military bases in the pacific. it flew high and long. the pride of leader kim jong-un who was pictured with it and applauding its launch, according to north korea. this rocket can carry a large and heavy nuclear warhead. it was different because it flew high. more than 1,200 miles up and

more than 400 miles out. close to russia. suggesting, say experts, that north korea's missile range is growing and sparking condemination of the launch and of the leader who ordered it. >> i think get into kim jong-un's head. which is he is in a state of paranoia and concerned about anything and everything around him. i think this was a message to south korea after the election and what we're going to do is continue to tighten the screws. he feels it. he absolutely feels it. >> reporter: banned from any rocket launch by the u.n. but it ignores that. four tests in two months have failed put its arsenal is growing and so to the pace of its tests and carry out a seventh nuclear test. the strategic patience with north korea is over. even hinting at a preemptive strike. but president trump also said he'd be honored to meet kim jong-un under the right

circumstances. and just before this rocket test, north korea said it's prepared for direct talks with the u.s., if the conditions are right. >> i can tell you, he can sit there and say all the conditions he wants. until he meets our conditions, we're not sitting down with him. >> reporter: expect new sanctions against north korea, although it says nothing will stop its nuclear program. now this rocket wasn't powerful enough to reach the west coast of the u.s. and there is no evidence it can carry a nuclear warhead as the north koreans say. but military analysts believe this was another technic logical advance. north korea, as ever, defiant and dangerous. >> i was going to say, here we go, again. what can the world do? >> the u.n. security council meets tomorrow to know exactly what to do. the white house says because the rocket landed closer and the president can't imagine that russia is pleased.

in china and he is saying we need to talk to north korea and stop scaring it. president trump, of course, is pressuring china, north korea's only ally to do more because one thing is clear, u.n. sanctions aren't stopping kim jong-un. the question, as you said, is what on earth will? >> exactly, bill neely in london, thank you. president trump's revised travel ban goes back to court in seattle today. the administration wants an appeal's court by a federal judge in hawaii. that judge blocked the ban from going into effect. the president's order would bar entry to foreign nationals. president trump says the restrictions are a key part of his plan to keep out potential terrorists. the state of hawaii contends the order is a thinly ordered ban on muslims. now to a new problem for united airlines. it is issuing a security alert

to pilots and flight attendants worldwide saying its procedures for gaining access to the cockpit. >> hi, savannah, good morning to you. united like all airlines safeguards about key pad codes and procedures to get on to a cockpit and that information got out over the next few days. the airline is trying to fix that problem and reminding its employees under no circumstances can they share the sensitive information. this morning, united airlines insists it wasn't a hack, but its confidential procedures for gaining access to the flight deck leaked. now, the airline is moving fast to shore up its procedures. that could mean reprogramming the keypads on every united cockpit door with new access codes. veteran pilot captain john cox. >> something like this information getting in the wrong hands is something that they're dealing with very quickly.

>> reporter: since 9/11, every flight deck door on every commercial aircraft has been reinforced with steel. new planes come off the assemly borderlines with tougher, fortified doors. to gain access to the cockpit, crew members must enter a secret keypad code and airlines have their own confidential procedures for opening the door to flight attendants while in the air. if a pilot leaves the cockpit to use the restroom, many airlines require flight attendants to block the aisle with a food cart. >> so, this is undermined all the time. we are trained to be vigilant and, in fact, our procedures are to remain in constant contact with the cabin. >> reporter: in a statement, united airlines tells nbc news the safety of our customers and crew is our top priority and united utilizes a number of measures to keep decks secure beyond door access information. critical since united planes take off with passengers 4,500

100,000 organizations in 150 countries have withbeen impacte. businesses, to hospitals and schools. there's a new concern. two versions of that virus have been detected. overnight, at least one person died in a seven-alarm high-rise apartment building fire in pittsburgh. you can see flames as they shoot out of the windows of the midtown towers there. crews evacuated 100 people as they battled the flames. the cause of the fire is under investigation. and nascar driver aric amarola is out of the hospital, after a fiery crash. danica patrick's car burned into flames and amarola had to be cut out of his car. he was taken away by ambulance and airlifted to the hospital, treated for a fractured

vertebrae. >> our thoughts are with him, for sure. let's get the latest on the death of 19-year-old timothy piazza, during the apparent hazing incident at penn state university. it happened in february. we sat down with his parents and brother last night. we're going to hear from them in a moment. first, how the tragedy unfolded. these pictures show a vibrant life cut short. timothy piazza died at penn state in february, during an alcohol-fueled pledge ritual known as the gauntlet. now, 18 members of the fraternity beta theta pi are charged in his death. >> they made the pledges run from station to station and drink enormous amounts of alcohol. >> reporter: pledges shotgunning beers and drinking from vodka bottles. after more than an hour, prosecutors say piazza is staggering towards the basement steps. the mothers hear him fall and

carry him back to the couch. one brother testifies they demanded they take piazza to the hospital. but he's shoved to a wall and asked to leave. a group text is sent around. tim piazza may be a problem. going to need help. but nothing happens. piazza stands for a final time, staggering again towards the basement. later in the morning, he's found there, cold to the touch. finally, the brothers call for help, nearly 12 hours after piazza first fell. but it was too late. now, our emotional conversation with him the ttimothy piazza's . we begin talking about the disturbing timeline of the fateful night. >> it was horrific. this wasn't boys being boys, matt. this was men, who intended to force-feed lethal amounts of

control into other young men. and what happened throughout the night was just careless disregard for human life. they basically treated our son as road kill and a rag doll. >> nobody should consume that much alcohol. that's -- that's torture. >> reporter: there are videotapes. that house had an internal video system that's pretty extensive. how much of the video have you seen? >> we haven't seen the video yet, matt. i don't really want to see it. but i will tell you this, if the board of trustees and president barron watch it with me, i'll watch it. >> reporter: you don't want to watch it alone as a parent. but you would watch it with someone that could make decisions that could make a difference? >> absolutely. i don't want to see it as a parent because i feel like it will be painful.

and the last memories of my son will be him being abused for 12 hours and dying a slow and painful death. >> i watch you as your husband talked about what's on the video. because of how inebriated tim was, he fell a number of times. and one of those falls was down a staircase that was 15 feet long. he was severely injured. and for 12 hours. >> they slapped him. threw water in his face. sat on him. >> they punched him. >> where the ruptured spleen was. >> trying to wake him up. snap out of it. >> they did a sternum rub. somebody knew what a sternum rub was and knew that if he didn't react to it, there's a significant issue. they did nothing about it. >> when did you realize something was wrong? >> one of his roommates called me, to see if i knew where he was because he hadn't come home. so, i called the hospital, just

to see. and the woman on the phone told me, he was in the emergency room. i went over there immediately. and when i got there, i found out pretty quickly how serious it was. >> were you the one who called your folks? >> i had to call my mom to let her know that he was severely injured and that they were going to fly him to the hershey medical center because he was so severe they couldn't treat him there. >> when was the first time you saw tim? >> he was in surgery. and the doctors came out and sat us down. said he had a nonrecoverable brain injury. we knew at that point he wasn't going to make it. we were hoping there would be

something different, an outcome. they let us go in and see him, we talked to him a little bit. we held his hand. a tear came to his eye. and i said to the doctor, can he hear us? and the doctor said, maybe. we relieved a lot of pressure, maybe. but i don't know if i want to know if he heard us or not. if he heard us, he knew he was going to die. >> and there was nothing they could do? >> no. the dablg wmage was too severe. the bleeding had been too long. >> did you ask any of the surgeons or the doctors, had he been brought to you an hour, two hours, four hours, six hours, with the outcome have been different? >> i said those exact words. if he was brought here earlier, would the outcome be different? and the doctor said, yeah. so, the 12 hours he was left on a couch, on the floor, wherever

it was in the fraternity house, when no one picked up the phone and called 911, that is what made the difference? >> yeah. >> yes. >> they killed him. >> when the funeral came around, did any of those fraternity pledges or potential brothers come to the funeral? >> no one from the fraternity or from penn state came to the wake or the funeral. >> no official from penn state university reached out and said i'm going to be there? i want to show up at this young man's wake or funeral? >> no. when i met with president barron, when we met with him, i brought a copy of the mass book with tim's picture. and i said, since no one had the time to come to the services, i thought you might want to see this. >> what did he say? >> he took a deep breath and sat back in his chair and nodded.

good monday morning. it's 7:56. a look at the sunshine from our san jose camera. also very chilly out there. we're seeing temperatures in the low 50s. we had upper 40s. we're still seeing that in fairfield and napa as well as morgan hill. today, the highs will reach into the upper 60s, which is still cooler than average. 72 degrees in concord. half moon, 57, and san francisco today will see a high of 61 degrees. low 70s for the north bay. over the next couple days, we'll see our temperatures ramping up after a slight chance of rain tomorrow. i'll have more updates on that, and we'll keep you up to date on those temperatures making it into the upper 70s inland by the end of the week. and now for an update on what's happening on the roadways. let's head to mike. >> looking at a smooth drive for the south bay. the build is on for san jose into the rest of silicon valley.

booting up only to find their infected. the massive cyber attack has frozen computer networks in 150 countries including the u.s. affecting hospitals, transport systems, telecom companies and universities. fedex said its computers were infected on friday. the virus is called ransomwear because it locks computers, encrypts files and demands money. about $300 in bitcoin to get access to the files. it's based on a hole in metropolitan security in a the nsa first found. hackers stole it last summer and leaked it online. over the weekend, a british cyber researcher found a killswitch. along with an american, slowed down the virus. but this morning, the chinese say they've detected a new version that spreads even faster and isn't affected by that killswitch. some industry experts say this attack is most likely the work of russian-speaking cyber

a good monday morning to you. 8:26. i'm laura garcia cannon. bay area authorities will join together with lawmakers in the east bay east bay to introduce a first of its kind plan to fight back against freeway shootings along a busy highway corridor. it calls for cameras along interstate 880 and highway 4 between richmond and antioch. the technology includes shot spotter microphones and would notify law enforcement officers within seconds of a shooting. at least 30 freeway shootings have been reported in contra costa over the past year and a half. let's check that morning commute right now with mike. how are things rolling for a monday? >> they were rolling fine but a series of crashes in the east bay and that's where you see the drama, south bay we may have an issue and give the sensors a couple seconds to adjust.

that's the question i hear more than any other question. you met ruth. it must have been an interesting meeting. i understand she was not all that happy about this movie being made. what was the time with her like? >> she was guarded, understandably so. but incredibly gracious. i was really surprised that she was actually willing to meet me. and i just spent time with her. i didn't -- you know, my intent wasn't to sort of present her with any probing questions or i felt like she had been victimized enough by the media. i certainly didn't want to add to her torture. so, i just wanted to observe her. and we just spent about an hour together. you know, i wanted to get a sense of her. >> and coming away from that, as you said, you have no doubt in your mind, that she knew nothing about the fraud her husband perpetua perpetuated. >> we didn't get into that

♪ good monday morning at 9:26. i'm sam brock. we expect to learn more information about the man arrested in connection with a series of car fires, including at least seven of them set last week in contra costa county. one was set near a mcdonald's just a mile away from where another car fire had been set. authorities say he's facing more than 40 criminal charges. so far the only thing we know for certain about the suspect is that he's 36 years old and he lives somewhere in contra costa. he's being held right now on $3 million bail, and contra costa firefighters in pleasant hill do plan on releasing more information. at this hour, sting in the

east bay. they're introducing a first of its kind plan to fire back on freeway shootings along a busy highway corridor. the plan calls for a network of cameras on interstate 80 and highway 4 between richmond and antioch. it would notify authorities within seconds of a shooting. at least 30 different freeway shootings have happened and been reported to contra costa county in the last year and a half. something we will continue to follow. coming up after the break, we'll have a look at your weather is traffic at this hour. be right back.
