this morning the white house is in full-blown crisis management mode scrambling to respond to another explosive allegation, this time from the same paper that brought down richard nixon. "the washington post" is reporting president trump revealed highly classified information to russia's foreign minister and ambassador during their visit to the white house last week. the paper claiming mr. trump gave the russians, quote, code word material relating to isis, even revealing a specific city within isis territory where a threat was detected according to current and former u.s. officials. a spokesperson is denying the report while the administration says no intel sources or methods were revealed. >> the story that came out tonight as reported is false. the president and the foreign minister reviewed a range of common threats to our two countries including threats to civil aviation. at no time, at no time were intelligence sources or methods

discussed, and the president did not disclose any military operations not publicly known. >> the information in question is believed to have stemmed from a u.s. partner that had not given the u.s. permission to share it, and it's causing an uproar in washington with lawmakers, both democrat and republican, calling it appalling, disturbing, troubling, deeply concerning and part of a pattern of recklessness from the white house. for more, we're joined by nbc's tracie potts. tracie, the question many are asking this morning, did the president break any laws? >> apparently not according to officials familiar with the law. the president can declassify information on his own. the issue is not did he break the law. if issue is was it a smart thing to do? could it possibly lead to russia or some other country discovering the source of this intelligence? that seems to be the big concern here, and could it stop our own intelligence allies from passing along information if they know that information won't be kept

confidential. listen. >> the thing intelligence officers want to be able to do, they want to be able to go out and recruit human sources and tell them two things, one, we're going to protect your life. second, your information is going direct tloi the president's desk. it's that important. tonight i don't think they can tell those sources that both are true. to give it to the president means that they might be jeopardizing that human source's life. >> we're already hearing from democrats and republicans on capitol hill that they need more of an explanation they got from h.r. mcmaster, the national security adviser last night in that russianed comment that he made after all of this broke. we'll hear from him again today. he's expected to be at the white house briefing with sean spicer, so we will likely hear from him again today as the white house tries to focus on foreign policy this week. here is yet another crisis to deal with. >> sure to hear a lot more about this. thank you tracie potts in washington. while focusing on foreign

policy the west wing is embroiled in the latest controversies, the administration going full steam ahead in the search for an fbi director following last week's ousting of james comey. laurks want to know what's behind trump's tweet about secretly recorded conversations with comey. we have the latest from nbc's hallie jackson. >> reporter: the president focusing on finding a new fbi director, but the one he fired still casts a shadow with new questions about whether the president really recorded a dinner with james comey like he implied in a tweet or whether he records any private conversations. >> why won't you just explain whether or not there are recordings? >> the president made it clear what his position is. >> that's not my question. why won't you explain it? >> because that's what the president's position is. >> how is any senior official supposed to feel comfortable having a conversation with the president. >> as i said, the president made it clear what his position is. >> if president trump is taping

people in the white house without their knowledge who come to see him, that's a big deal. >> if there are no tapes, he should apologize to james comey and to the american people for misleading them. >> you can't be cute about tapes. if there are any tapes, they need to be turned over. i doubt if there are, u be we need to clear the air. >> reporter: why? lawmakers want to know whether president trump made any improper requests of comey. one day before their dinner, acting attorney general sally yates says mike flynn is susceptible to blackmail. immediately after the president is briefed. at some point either that day or the next, comey is summoned to dinner, last-minute, according to a senior fbi official. in the hours before the meal, yates meets again with white house counsel. comey declined an invitation to talk privately to congress. instead he wants a public hearing, eager to step out of the shadows and stare his story.

>> thanks to nbc's hallie jackson. federal officials are investigating a fiery private plane crash in northern new jersey that killed the two crew members on board. surveillance video captured the moment the learjet hit the ground. cars in the parking lot were burned to a crisp. the faa says the plane crashed about a quarter mile short of teterboro airport. witnesses say it appeared to be in trouble as it tried to land. >> i saw the plane come over in front of us completely on its side flying iratically and my girlfriend linda was on the passenger seat and she said oh, my god. >> no passengers were on board and no one on the ground appeared to have n be injured. deadline is reporting that hackers have stolen disney's new pirate's of the caribbean movie "dead men tell no tales." the hackers demanded disney pay an enormous amount of money.

disney ceo bob eager says he did not say which film it was. deadline reports disney is working with the fbi. insiders say the company reviewsed to pay the hackers. disney has not responded to nbc's request for comment. the revelation follows the rapid spread of the wanna cry malware attack. tom costello has more on the cyber threats and how to protect yourself from them. >> reporter: according to the fbi losses totalled a billion dollars in 2015. fast forward to 2016, they found ransomware e-mails spiked 6,000%. the latest attack targeted windows xp, an operating system nearly 16 years old. microsoft is pushing an urgent patch. >> the most important thing is download the security patch. >> to protect yourself, experts say keep your operating system

and security software up to date. back up your data on the cloud or an external hard drive. never click on a suspicious e-mail or link and limit the number of employees who have user control access. but if your computer is held hostage, should you pay the ransom? >> in some cases people have decided they have to pay the ransom because the cost of potentially losing that data forever or not having access to that data is too great. >> the ransom wear thieves demand payment in electronic bit coins because it's impossible to trace. it's a gamble but perhaps the only way to reclaim your digital life. a new round of peace talks between the syrian government and opposition groups is starting up today in switzerland, this as u.s. state department officials say bashar al assad's forces have been executing thousands of political opponents and burning their bodies to hide the evidence. they believe at least 50 detainees a day are killed at a military prison north of

damascus. the state department declassified these photos of the prison from 2013. they say it shows a crematorium built at the complex nicknamed the slaughter house. nikki haley decried his actions saying the attempt to cover up mass murders in the assad cream tropical storm -- paying attention to wicked weather for travelers in ham ton, iowa caught in that intense dust storm. let's check in with nbc meteorologist bill karins who joins us with severe storms and a tornado risk in the forecast. >> yesterday, no injuries, no fatalities. hopefully lucky again today. so far this year, 726 reports, typically about 481 at this point. we're a little ahead of schedule. most of them are in the middle of the country. severe weather possible for 13

we're watching the big dip in the jet stream in the west. that is leading to very chilly, unusually cool conditions and even snow in the mountains. it happens in may in the mountains above 5,000 feet. the temperatures will be much cooler. wednesday at 39 degrees, yellowstone stuck in the 40s, denver goes from pretty warm until today. thursday you cool off. even vegas struggles to get into the 80s. cool weather with us in the west. it's going to stay that way for a couple days. then we'll flip-flop it again. it's spring. we like to change you and keep you on edge. >> thanks bill.
