and from the airport. we are following several breaking news stories this morning. we are just getting reports that former fox news chairman and ceo roger ailes has died. >> plus an armed standoff coming to an end in the east bay. we have a crew live at the scene talking to investigators to give you an update. firefighters are still on the scene of an early morning fire in the south bay. this building has a past history of fires. surprise loss, chris cornell, the driving force in the grunge rock world dies unexpectedly. family and friends are shocked and investigation is now under way. today in the bay continues now. good morning to you, thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-canon. >> i'm sam brock. a lot to get to right now. what do you think? >> the heat is coming the heat reaches the peek on sunday so we're in for several summer like days around the bay area.

it's cooler to start this morning but you'll see those temperatures quickly going up. live look at sunol, only 44 degrees in san francisco starts out the morning at twin peaks looking at 49 degrees. you see the clear sunrise, 83 in livermore, 81 in san jose and 70 in san francisco. today in napa, 84 degrees. we'll talk about the weekend forecast coming up in about seven minutes but mike is tracking a light build to the commute. >> but a build nonetheless and we're tracking the effects of a crash and debris reported pleasanton in sunol. in the south bay, the traffic on the freeways is light but we're still following this issue just off to the freeway. the commercial fire at story and white. there's a ninny mall and kris sanchez is there. we did have word from kris that lines 25 and 17 on story and white road may be affected if this fire continues. she'll have the latest changes and we do have the issue of pier

41, service canceled for the oakland alameda ferry today, midday and afternoon just like previous days in the week. back to you. let's get back to that breaking news now. former fox news ceo and chairman roger ailes one of the founders of fox news channel has died at the age of 77. that is confirmed by fox news. we reported it about 15 minutes ago. mr. ailes wife released a statement within the last few minutes saying "he was also a patriot, profoundly grateful to live in a country that gave him so much opportunity to work hard, rise and give back ailes stepped down from fox news amid allegations of sexual harassment. the circumstances behind his death are not known but as soon as we have more information we'll bring it right to you. we're also following breaking news out of the east bay, a standoff with two people inside of the home just now ending in el sobrante. this is a story we've been bringing you live coverage on

since 4:30 this morning. today in the bay's bob redell is live with new developments just in the last few minutes. bob? >> good morning, sam, initially the contra costa county sheriff's office believes there were a man and woman inside the home here in nottingham drive. if you zoom in you can see the sign that's been crudely written on the door "no visitors." it turns out there was just one man inside and if you look at this video, just came into our newsroom, you can see him sitting in the back of the squad car before he was taken off for processing and perhaps an interview. i spoke with a detective with the contra costa county sheriff's office and he believe this is man was the product of heavy drug use, that he was perhaps on druss when he started firing his drugs around midnight. this is the scene around 5:25. the sheriff's office had the house surrounded. they evacuated both sides of the

hou house. they were talking to the imagine over the p.a. system asking him to come out with no weapons. you can see the swat team moved in poised with their weapons and a short time after that they took a posture of success as in they were no longer at the arme and ready but they had taken this man into custody without incident peacefully ak0rding to the contra costa county sheriff's office. we was speaking with a neighbor who lives next door who tells us what happens before he was ev evacuated from his home. >> i don't know why. i believe he was on drugs as far as i know. >> your neighbor? >> yeah. >> reporter: what did he do, allegedly? >> tonight. exactly what i explained, fired at this guy, broke one of the windows at the house and that was it, the sheriff's came and pretty much they took over from

there. >> it's not clear if the man was firing his gun at someone or indiscriminately into the air but to recap, he has been taken into custody without incident, no one hurt on nottingham drive and the neighbors who live on either side of the home have been allowed to return. reporting live from in el sobrante, bob redell, today in the bay. >> thank you very much, bob. we're also following brz in the south bay. is an early morning fire breaking out at a building in east san jose near white and story road today in the bay's kris sanchez has been live at the scene all morning long getting updates from investigators. she joins us live with the latest, chris? >> good morning, laura. we were just watching a for fighter shoot more water through this o'reilly's auto parts store from the ground to the top but it looks like the work is to wrap up those hoses and mop up the scene here. when the flames were burning they were raging out here. we got video of that from the

fire department. the fire burned for two hours after it was reported by a security guard just after 3:00 this morning. i mentioned this is an oh riv o'reilly's auto parts store but it was empty so there was no concern over chemicals and flammable material that might have been inside. f that building were operational. the fire captain said it started in a dumpster but it doesn't look like arson. >> it does not appear that it is highly suspicious. in those cases we tend to see accelerants, the gasoline or something and didn't burn in that pattern. that's a distinctive pattern or multiple ignition sites. >> this is not the first time we've reported on a fire out here z. this is video from june when nbc bay area was on scene of a grass fire that spread to a

car behind the same o'reilly's building and there was damage to the building as well. folks out here tell us they have seen homeless people using the store to take shelter. it's unknown whether or not those living conditions contributed to the fire back then or to the fire now. mike inouye has been tracking those vta bus line reroutes. we can tell you white road has reopened so hopefully traffic getting back to normal for drivers. vta might be lower to respond but plan ahead, give yourself extra time and make sure you follow mike inouye on twitter. in san jose, kris sanchez, to toad -- today in the bay. more breaking news, the sudden and unexpected death of one of grunge rock's signature singer chris cornell. ♪ black hole sun, won't you come ♪ >> cornell was lead singer of soundgarden, a band that shot to

fame in the mid-90s. he was on a solo tour at the time of his death. a representative says he died wednesday night in detroit. sources tell our nbc affiliate he took his own life but no official cause of death has been given. chris cornell was 52. continuing coverage now. it's an emotional day here ahead is for the sierra lamar murder case. her parents are expected to testify. last week, antolin garcia-torrez was convicted of first degree murder. now the jury must decide whether or not he'll spend the rest of his life in prison or get the death penalty. also notable is that a judge recently overturned a murder verdict in another case after determining the lead detective in that case gave fls testimoal testimony. that's relevant because the same detective was a key witness in the sierra lamar trial. no indication what impact, if any, it will have on this case. happening today, the man authorities call the arsonist in a series of contra costa county car fires is expected to be

arraigned. an arson task force arrested james bishop iii from pittsburg. he faces charges in connection with a string of car fires across the county, that includes seven last week alone. bay area spoke yesterday by phone to his parents. they say he's innocent. >> he just went up there for a job. why would he blow up cars? investigators say surveillance video helped provide key clues that led to an arrest including images of the suspect's car. as you get ready to head out, we have a cool start but it will be a very warm day. you want to 79 in the peninsula as we look at palo alto. 83 in the tri-valley. beautiful sunrise, it's going to be up to 83 in the north bay. coming up in three minutes, a look at the temperature trend. mike is tracking several issues on the roads. >> no major slowing, that's the good news.

a road situation gone horribly awry here. look at this video coming into our newsroom. a very close call caught on came camera. a driver plowing through a deli. one of them is five months pregnant. that's when out of nowhere the suv comes crashing into the deli dumping those store shelves and debris and products on top of the workers. the pregnant woman is unhurt and everyone else in that deli is okay. police say the suv was stolen and the driver was arrested. stocks sagged yesterday before the special counsel investigated the white house. >> scott, you were saying investors are good about predicting these things. >> reporter: they really are. they seemed to know the situation had turned for the worst. wall street cares about what happens in washington because wall street wants the big tax cuts the white house promised.

other things, the president's relationship with foreign leaders, particularly chinese president xi. president trump used to demonize chinese trade but the two are getting along and trump is hoping to get xi to put pressure on north korea but xi and other leaders may start to back away. cisco systems in san jose says it will lay off an additional 1,100 workers in addition to the more than 5,000 it already announced. cisco is san jose's largest private employer. it makes hardware that makes the internet run. when you log on to twitter -- or maybe you have -- you'll see they have a new customer agreement you have to click through. the new system delivers more tailored ads based on what it thinks you're interested in and you can look at that list to adjust it. now twitter thinks i'm interested in ice cream, it's not wrong and i do have a child between the ages of 11 and 15. there's my list right there. dog treats are on there, too, i

assume my dog was surfing the web, this is what twitter and third party advertisers think about me. i've tweeted out the instructions as to how to tailor it @scottmcgrew on twitter, of course. google showed off new technology at its i/o conference. that stands for input/output. one of the things is to adapt the camera's phone to do things. point it at the flower, it tells you where the flower is. point it at a marquee where there's a band playing you've never heard of, it plays songs from the band and allows you to buy tickets. facebook has noticed this, too. we've had this incredible camera and powerful software and chips and we can do stuff we never thought of. you can point it at a restaurant and it will give you -- -- but more companies are figuring out it's the camera that's the coolest part of the phone. >> it's eliminating the need to ask siri. >> music to our ears. thank you very much. 6:16.

would realize that? like, sure, i'm a kid but it doesn't take a genius to realize that i'm not a girl. the bay area is home to several clinics for transkids so who are the youngest patients and when can they start undergoing medical treatment to change their bodies? you can catch our full investigation tonight at 11:00. >> if you have a tip for our investigative unit, give us a call. lake tahoe is getting close to reaching its maximum capacity, all of this thanks to record rain and snow for the winter. the dam that releases water from the lake into the trucky river is fully open. but here's the problem, as the snow melts between now and august and the temperatures rise, the lake is expected to rise by more than two feet which would bring it higher than what's legally allowable. as officials keep releasing water there, the truckee river is expected to flow stronger and heavier than normal and people

are told to avoid swimming or rafting. >> i would imagine those currents will flow you can't go rafting because of the bridges. >> i'd have more problems than most. >> we'll talk about tahoe because we may have people heading in that direction into this weekend. we're getting ready for warmer temperatures here. so you may want to head somewhere where it's going to be cooler. here's a live look outside over this beautiful sun rise over mt. hamilton. this live view from tiburon, you see the sun rise and no fog as the temperature in san francisco starts out at 49 degrees. it's 44 in livermore, 43 in morgan hill even though it's a cooler start it will be a much warmer afternoon. look at these high temperatures today in concord. one of the warmer spots, palo alto 79, nice in san francisco

up to 70. if you plan on hitting hiking trails in the north bay today, it starts out at 50 but then look at that jump in temperatures, more than 30 by 2:00. make sure you're prepared for that looking life at heavenly, we see a lot of snow, a light dust ago couple days ago and look at how warm it will be this weekend. that's why the level is so high on the lake right now and those rivers flowing out of lake tahoe will be up to 72 on sunday. we'll also have some 70s in san francisco so matching that temperature in the mid-70s for saturday and sunday and then it starts to cool off next week. the cooldown will be more gradual for the inland valleys. we'll be up to 93 reaching the peak of the heat on sunday and it will be very summer like over the next seven days. mike has a very pleasant drive for most right now. >> as far as the volume of

patients they can live welcome back. glad you're with us on this thursday morning. some medical news right now. when doctors tell colon cancer patients they can live longer by adopting healthier habits they say fewer than 10% follow those orders. but a new ground breaking study finds a few simple life-style changes can actually be a lifesaver. the study looked at nearly a thousand states and three colon

cancer survivors over seven years and those who followed the life-style guidelines showed a 42% lower risk of dying and 3 1% lower chance of the cancer coming back. the guidelines are simple, get at least two and a half hours of exercise each week or 150 minutes. >> eat a lot of veggies and whole grains and limit the amount of processed and red meat you consume. a ucsf researcher explains. >> it helps your body metabolize the energy better, keeps the glucose and insulin inflammation levels low which seems to be -- provide kind of an environment that inhibits the growth of your cance cancer. >> that that study focused specifically on colon cancer but doctors say this could be beneficial to all cancer patients. nbc bay area responds to a man who had an issue getting a refund for an extended warranty on his car. he reached out to us for help. consumer investigator chris chmura has the story. >> reporter: when he bought a new car from honda stevens creek in 2009, he bought a $1500

standoff just ended in el sobrante. we're also live at an early morning fire at a building in san jose at a very popular intersection. good morning, thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. we will have updates on those stories in a couple minutes but first it's like a transition thursday because by the time we get to this weekend -- and yes, yes, this is corny, i know. >> not throwback thursday. >> i guess that's taken. it will feel feel like summer. >> it will be a hot weekend. temperatures inland rising into the 90s and if you haven't heard by now i don't want you to be surprised. look at these temperatures. low 70s in san francisco and this is where it stays the most comfortable. we will have a juf of an on shore flow to keep things nice and cool there but look at the inland valleys, 93 degrees sunday and that will be the hottest day in the seven-day forecast. i'm getting you ready for the week end in seven minutes and

mike is tracking a cash in the east bay. >> barely in the east bay. i want to show folks the speed sensors which are building as far as the volume. no major problems for the tri-valley or this portion, hayward looks standard west across the may joe bridge, you have a more popular route now. toward the bay bridge that is just fine but eastbound 80 right at the toll plaza we hear about a crash affecting two of your left lanes. no major injuries and impacts to the sensors out of the east bay and into the north bay, you may find some delays. we'd like to get you caught up on breaking news we have been following out of the east bay. a standoff with a man barricaded inside of a home just ending in el sobrante. this is the story we have been bringing you live coverage of since 4:30 this morning. bob redell is out there with new developments an we're learning more about what started all of this, bob. >> reporter: good morning, sam. the standoff with the man who

lives in this house here at nottingham drive ended peacefully about an hour ago with him surrendering to the contra costa county sheriff's office after he allegedly started firing a gun and if you look to your right you can see where the sheriff's deputy is pulling out of the driveway. to the left is an suv, a neighbor's suv that was struck by one of the bullets that came from his gun, hitting her car parked in the driveway a couple doors down. the detective is taking a look at it right now. if you look at this video, as you can see, the suspect was put in the back of a squad car and driven away from the scene about 30, 45 minutes ago, deputies were called to his home around midnight after he allegedly started firing the gun. it's not clear if he had a target or was firing indiscriminately. we know no one was hurt. the swat team was called out, they surrounded his house, brought out the armored vehicle,

they evacuated the neighbors who live on both sides of the house and over the p.a. system they addressed the man by name and ordered him to come out unarmed with his hands up. it took him a while, probably went on for a good hour or two but just before 5:30 he complied with that order with no one getting hurt. we spoke with a detective, he tells us the sheriff's office has been out to this address several times over the past year because of this man's alleged drug use. the detectives believe he was on drugs last night when he started firing his gun. as you come back out here live, they point out the fact if you look at this man's house, he's got two surveillance cameras, one on the roof, another over a window and if you can look on the front of his door he's got brynn in black lettering there "no visitors." detectives believe this man is suffering from an extreme form of paranoia. but as you can see here, the investigation continues with the deputies, it looks like they have a warrant to go into the house but no one was hurt during

the standoff that went until around 5:30. reporting live from el sobrante, bob redell, today in the bay. it's 6:34 right now. other breaking news we're following this time from the south bay, now that the sun is up, look at this live scene in san jose where crews have been there at a popular strip mall all morning long. fire broke out at 3:00 a.m. at white and story road. firefighters say the fire started at about 3:00 in the morning. they believe it began in a dumpster. no injuries reported and because the building is empty, no chemicals or flammable products inside. firefighters aren't calling the fire suspicious but this is the second time in a year firefighters have been called to that same area. last june a grass fire damaged cars in the small section of the same building. san francisco police are investigating a stabbing at popular delores park. police say a person was stabbed several times during an attack by five to six juveniles. it happened early in the evening

about 5:00. the victim was rushed to the hospital. we're waiting for word on their condition. sfpd is asking anyone who saw anything to call them. a family says there's been no sign of this man or his car since sunday. his wife is pleading to the public for help. >> it hurts so bad and it hurts when i hear my son say "where's daddy?" why daddy's not coming home? >> she says her husband went to visit a friend on sunday afternoon but never showed up. chai, an uber driver, wasn't working the day he vanished but he told a relative a customer left a phone in his car and he wanted to return it. the family says it's work withing with uber for a court order for his phone records. they're waiting for a judge to sign it. san francisco's sheriff is reportedly devise ago plan to

move some of the city's most dangerous inmates to another location. the problem is, the county's jail's maximum security section of the shall seattled to close, the examiner reports up to 350 inmates will have to be housed somewhere else. sheriff vicki hennessey is working with public health leaders and others to find an alternative. one idea includes the construction of some kind of replacement facility. >> it's been a turbulent issue on the peninsula for a long time but people are finally expecting to get answers about the new plans to limit the noise from san carlos airport. a live look this morning as the debate over noise has been brewing for years. you can see a plane taking off right now. for the last year, the county has been getting input on possible solutions. that would include maybe a curfew proposal. tonight's meeting starts at 6:00 at redwood city. these are some aerials from last

night at levi stadium. one of the biggest rock group on the planet wrapping up their concert last night. u2 for the 30th anniversary of their epic album "joshua tree." about 50,000 people were in attendance last night including some people like, i don't know, my co-anchor. nbc's sky ranger over -- this must have been amazing, laura. >> it was a great, great show. they played everything from that joshua tree album which is such a great hit. sky ranger was over the scene there. vta and caltran ran late night service because the show went after the city's event curfew. they were working on that anticipating another estimated 6,500 people used vta to get home. >> well worth it i think, definitely a bonus for you and vta helping out as well. a smooth drive, light traffic flow. a lot of folks are sleeping in which is what laura would be grateful for as well. eastbound 80 near the toll plaza

we had that crash, minor backup as they cleared the leaps. it sounds like the lanes should be cleared up judging by the speed sensors which have good recovery. chris talked about the vta lines on white road. white road reopened past the fire where she's tracking that. there's possible delays because vta hasn't given us anything definitive. >> good to note there. >> hopefully just a hiccup. weekend weather time. it's thursday -- well, we call it friday eve. >> we started the weekend early already. >> and looking ahead to warmer weather. we know it will be hot and we'll start out with temperatures in the mid-80s but look at the inland areas sunday. up to 93 degrees and warm towards the bay. we'll see more of the same weather saturday as well. sunday will be the peak of the

heat. looking at a couple events going on, on saturday in oakland we have the jazz and arts festival and san antonio park. at 10:00 it's going to be in the mid-60s and then already up to 75 degrees by 1:00 in the afternoon. but where you need to be careful in san jose, temperatures will be much hotter for the rose parade. it starts out with a parade at 72 degrees at 10:00 in the morning and then look at how those temperatures make it into the mid-80s by 1:00 some of the festivities later on during the day up to 89 degrees with sunshine so you need to take lots of breaks and find somewhere air conditioned if you can. looking at the napa forecast for the weekend, low 90s there. i know we have bottle rock next weekend. it's going to be very warm but we are looking at 91 this

sex abuse case involving a long-time santa cruz neurosurgeon. just yesterday the district attorney filed seven new charges. dr. james cohoot is accused of sexually assaulting three children under ten years old. he works at a number of hospitals in the santa cruz area, that includes dominican hospital. investigators arresting two nurses in that case. new this morning, oak land's mills college is declaring a financial emergency for the first time in its 165-year history. the college is facing a $9 million deficit. the east bay times is reporting the women's college along with other single-sex college has struggled to attract stunts in recent years. they could be forced to lay off 30 graduate and faculty positions. the grad school is co-ed but talks about doing the same at the undergraduate school has faced fierce opposition. i.c.e. reports immigration

arrests were up nearly 40% during president trump's first 100 days in office. i.c.e. reported more than 41,000 arrests. over the same period a year ago it was about 30,000. 117 days after donald trump was inaugurated as president of the united states he is facing a special counsel investigating the white house. >> scott mcgrew reports the president is angry about it. >> reporter: he was back on twitter -- to the surprise of nobody -- let's go to that tweet.
