angeles. he's accused of violating a custody agreement and abducting his son. the mom went to the police station to report her son missing. she told me lam didn't show up with the boy as required. they pursued the amber alert after learning that lam had been acting erratically. >> the disturbing information regarding the father that gave us concern, at which time we initiated an amber alert. >> a cell phone ping from lam's phone provided police with an important clue. after the amber alert was expanded to include southern california, police say a shopper at a roth's store recognized the car and license plate and called police. after nine months, the woman who killed a 3-year-old child in a car crash has been arrested. she is the wife of an alameda sheriff's deputy. the family of elijah dunn says they are disappointed in the charges. they feel it's too lenient.

chp officers say that she was driving under the influence of drugs when she slammed into the vehicle dunn was sitting in on the shoulder of 680. contra costa county district attorney's office issued an arrest warrant for two felony charges against her. she's arrested and is now facing gross vehicular manslaughter and felony driving under the influence charges. she had been arrested for dui in june just three months before this crash that killed that 3-year-old. coming up at 7:00 on "today in the bay" hardware to protect your data.

what making headlines this morning -- first, president trump is in saudi arabia. first foreign trip as commander in chief, the first stop on a busy nine-day, five-nation tour. while the president may be trying to hit the reset button on his troubled presidency, turmoil is building at home with several bombshell reports surrounding the russian investigation and fired fbi director james comey. much more in a moment. plus, the last confederate monument's in new orleans has been removed. the statue of general robert e. lee lifted from its ppedestal. the monument represents white supremacy and proposed to remove them after that 2015 massacre of nine black parishioners at a south carolina church. and tensions ran high, the game between the marmens alins dodgers. it happened when the reliever threw a pitch behind stanton who didn't like it and the benches cleared.

how we learned to swim. that's how we fell in love with the sport. my mom put us in the water for water safety and now being a father, you know, kind of having boomer on the verge of starting to walk, and we do have a pool out back. so always making sure we know exactly where he is, if he is outside, and now we're in the process of -- coming up with a plan to, whether it's fence -- the pool, or make sure we just have something set in place so if something does happen and he was to get around the pool, that he would be safe. you know, for me, this is -- something like you guys said. it's very passionate for me, and i'm taking the pledge as a parent and i hope everybody else will take the pledge as we with me. >> michael, i have to ask. i have a 5-month-old at home, dying to get him in the pool. we're going to florida next week. is it too soon to put him in the pool with the chlorine and everything? >> no. not at 5 months.

boomer was in the water between 3 and 5 months. just him, i guess -- i think the biggest thing, what we try to do, with my swim school, trying to get the kid to be, like, comfortable in the water. i think that's the biggest thing. you know, for me, like, he's the direct opposite of me. i didn't want to be on my stomach. only my back. he only wants to be on his stomach and hates being on his back. so every kid is differ and they're all going to learn differently. the biggest thing, trying to get them relaxed in the water. because i think once you get to the point where you're, where a kid is spazzing out, i think that's probably a big no-no. so -- anytime we can try to get him to be as comfortable as they can, is a big goal, and -- with our foundation and the swim school it's over 16,000 kids, in boys and girls clubs all over the u.s. and special olympics worldwide just being able to get water safety. if the kid doesn't want to swim, great. at least we know they're safe in

>> let's start with newport, rhode island. >> so newport, rhode island, long a coastal retreat for america's wealthy, still a beautiful destination with a great marine center for kids. there is ft. adams state park which is one of america's best state parks according to foursquare city guide users. there's a new hotel called the gilded which is bringing in the colorful ornate touches, beautiful mirrors and everything. $179 a night puts you right in the heart of newport, rhode island. there's a great park with a beautiful flower show this summer. there's also a jazz festival in august. so whenever you're looking to go, this is a really great choice. >> we're not that far. we could do a road trip. how about saratoga springs, new york. the city is a big horse racing town. >> also close by, about 190 miles north of new york city. this is a destination that starts horse racing in july, but what a lot of people don't know is before that rates are really affordable. there's all sorts of things to do for creative types.
