we're expecting yet another hot day. we're talking 70s, 80s and 90s today. we have a combination of all three. but look at that fog along the peninsula right now, 54 degrees. a nice marine layer. we are expecting for the fog to break apart mid-morning. south bay already, yes, as vicky said, at 59 degrees, even at this early morning hour. i would say this is a good time, probably the coolest it's going to be all day. if you have plans to go out on a morning jog, this might be the perfect time to do it. east bay at 50 degrees, san francisco 52, north way 52. you can away see the fog to build in mainly along the coastline, though, then it will break apart by mid-morning making way for an overall sunny day. the temperature trend in san jose is showing 80s by 12:00, just about the time you head out to lunch. 82 degrees. by 1:00, 84. we are expecting to climb into the 90s in san jose and even san

francisco getting in on the summer action. by 12:00, 76 degrees. 1:00 already at 78 degrees. so expect to see a hot day. i'll talk more about the low humidity and the fire risk associated with the 90-degree temps coming up in just a bit. a 21-month-old boy kidnapped in san francisco is now safe after an alert shopper saw an amber alert and called police in los angeles. you can see police carrying makai bangoura out of the store. they arrested his father, 30-year-old jason lam in l.a. he's accused of violating a custody agreement and abducting his son. bangoura's mother reported the boy missing in san francisco thursday evening after lam didn't show up with their son. the district attorney's office pursued the amber alert after learning lam was acting erratically. >> we found out disturbing information regarding the father that really gave us concern, at which time we initiated an amber alert. >> a cell phone ping from lam's

phone provided police with an important clue. it revealed lam was in los angeles. they expanded the amber alert to include southern california. a shopper at a roth's store recognized the suspect's car and license plate and called police. after nine months, the woman who killed a 3-year-old child in a car crash has been arrested. she now faces two felony charges including dui. the family of elijah dunn says they're disappointed. they feel the charges are too lenient. yarenit liliana malihan is the wife of a sheriff's deputy. she was driving under the influence of drugs when she slammed into the car dunn was sitting in on the shoulder of 680. malihan now faces gross vehicle lack manslaughter and felony driving under the influence charges. the little boy's family says they expected more serious charges but the contra costa district attorney. >> we certainly think that she killed somebody, and we were hoping for charges of that nature. >> malihan had been arrested for

dui in june just three months before this crash that killed that 3-year-old. president trump is in saudi arabia today on his first trip abroad as president. mr. trump and first lady melania trump were greeted at the airport by saudi arabia's king salman. saudi officials then hosted a coffee ceremony for the president inside the airport terminal. the trip begins in riyadh where the president will meet with middle east leaders. followed by a meeting with pope francis at the vatican. on the agenda, prupt is expected to calm allies worried about his america first message. a current white house official was under investigation for possible collaboration between moscow and donald trump's campaign. we have learned the person in question is a senior adviser and works closely with the president. earlier this week former fbi director robert mueller was appointed special counsel for the investigation. we've also learned that

james comey has agreed to appear before the senate intelligence committee. the former fbi director will testify as part of an investigation into russia's interference in the election. the hearing is scheduled for some time after memorial day. and stay with us for the latest developments from the white house and overseas. we will continue to track president trump's trip over the next week both on air and online. costco robbed again. the store hit for a second time in one month, but this time shots were fired. danville police are looking for the robbery suspect. the bold jewelry heist during the busy friday lunchtime shopping craze, two people with masks and hoodies headed straight to the jewelry section, one smashing the case with a hammer as another person acted as a lookout. the other took items straight out of the display case. a shot was fired inside the store and in the parking lot. no one was hurt. >> i thought it was crazy the middle of the day people come in

masked and robbing it. so shocked me. >> i'm really surprised this happened in this area. that just seems, you know, strange. >> the suspects got away in a silver camry with paper plates. a similar incident happened on may 8. one person was arrested in that robbery, two others got away. in both cases police are hoping surveillance video inside costco and danville will help lead them to the robbers. 30 years to life in custody for the young man who killed 9-year-old jordy almgren. billy shultz was a family friend. he stabbed jordy to death in his bed. at yesterday's hearing jordy's family says they're ready to move on. >> there are no winners. there aren't. just healing for the defendant's family and for our family. >> it's kind of bittersweet. we still don't have our son. >> the next phase of the trial will determine the 20-year-old's

mental state. if shumts is determined to be insane, he'll be committed to a state mental facility. shultz's mother said she desperately tried to get help for her son's mental illness. a dog rescue in concord served as a reminder about the danger of hot cars. a good samaritan spotted a dog and nine puppies inside a car parked op clayton road on wednesday. they flagged down an officer and the dogs were sent to an emergency vet. unfortunately, two puppies died. a man identified as their caretaker now faces charges of animal cruelty. we have new details now about a plane crash last month. the two passengers killed, brenda and mark richards, have been found. the santa rosa couple flew out of the truckee tahoe airport headed for petaluma, but they never made it. the sierra county sheriff's department found that crash site on tuesday. with much more ahead on "today in the bay," coming up another big one could be on the way.

this hawaii-bound flight yesterday morning. it happened shortly after takeoff from l.a.x. investigators say the man set off an alarm when he tried pushing through the cockpit door. the inflight scare prompted air force jets to escort that flight to hawaii. the man appeared under the influence and said he tried going through the door to look for food. passengers and crew members helped subdue him. >> it was all kind of surreal. i think it ended up being just kind of a group effort. the way it all transpired. >> no one on board was hurt, and the flight made it safely. a parasite lurking in public tools has prompted a new warning from the centers for disease control. it's called crypto. the bug causes a slew of stomach issues when swimmers swallow contaminated pool water. the cdc says outbreaks have doubled since 2014 with 32 reported just last year. if your kids head to a pool this summer, the cdc says remind them

to keep their mouths closed. the fight to make california a separate nation is once again gaining traction. members of the california freedom coalition submitted a proposal to the state yesterday. the group says this initiative asks for the governor to negotiate for more autonomy. essentially making california a nation within a nation. this is the second attempt to remove california from the u.s. since president trump was elected. it is called the greatest show and tell on earth. and it happens this weekend. thousands of people are expected to gather at the san mateo events center for the 12th annual maker fair. it started last night, and it runs through tomorrow. there are activities for those who like to be hands on fighting robots to dazzling electronic fans. and for those who like their tech to be a little less scary, there are drone races. tickets range from 20 to $40. all the sensory overload you can

handle. runners, walkers and streakers, expect all of them tomorrow as san francisco hosts its annual bay to breakers race. organizers and police are making final preparations for the cross-city race. it is known for outrageous costumes and some nudity. once again, there will be a full ban on alcohol this year and more than 1,000 portable toilets lining the race course in the hopes of keeping runners and spectators from ruining people's landscaping. san francisco police say they'll be out in full force make sure everyone enjoys the day safely. >> we're going to be having a uniform presence all throughout the race course as well as, you know, along the areas that might be troublesome on the race course. >> organizers expect about 50,000 people to participate. here's a look at this year's course. it winds down howard, then up

hayes street hill, then golden gate park and the race will end, as always, as ocean beach. >> a great day for the runners. vianey arana has a look at the forecast. but a bit warm. >> especially if you are out there running all day long. i do have a look at what you can expect in terms of the temperature trend. but i'll tell you this, water's definitely going to have to be something that you pack throughout the day. right now in the peninsula, 54 degrees. still seeing the fog. in the south bay nice and clear at 59 and the tri-valley at 56 degrees. overall as the high pressure continues to build in, we'll see mostly clear skies. east bay 58. and the north bay at 52. even at this 7:00 a.m. hour we're already in the 50s. a quick look at doppler radar. we can see that fog over san francisco and especially along the coastline. we can expect to see that break down. that marine layer will also break down. but as we head into tomorrow

morn expect to see low patchy fog and low clouds as well. dangerous heat as this high ridge of pressure builds in and that will bring a nice combination of sun and, yes, we're expecting 60s along the coast. upper 60s and 70s for san francisco. and 80s and 90s in inland areas. today's forecast expect to see micro climates indeed. 60 degrees expected for half moon bay, san francisco at 73, napa 90, livermore 93 and in san jose and the south bay about 92 degrees. definitely something to keep in mind. i know as we head into summer we're expecting to see the warmer temps. but this is a preview of summer. trees and grass pollen high for now. weeds is low. keep that in mind as you head outside. today we can expect that ten-mile visibility fog to maintain at least for the next couple of hours through the

mid-morning. that will start to break down. then we'll see fast warming. you can see we're already in the 50s by about 11:00 a.m. inland areas will be climbing into the 70s. a very light breeze. and, of course, with this ridge of high pressure, we're seeing some low humidity which could bring some fire danger increases and that means if you're going to be outside barbecuing, keep that in mind. especially right now. we're not seeing a lot of wind. but if we do see wind pick up, that increases that chance even more. 88 degrees by 1:00. then by 4:00 as you head out for the dinnertime. 94 degrees. that's near record heat. please make sure to stay hydrated. just a few tips to keep in mind as you head into the weekend. i like to go outside and enjoy the outdoors. stay hydrated. don't forget the sunscreen fp if you will be biking or running, this might be the perfect time to do it. the coolest right now. as always hot car danger. please make sure to not leave any pets, people or anybody inside of a vehicle, not even

after the symptoms subside. the next update is expected on monday. a neighborhood battle is brewing along the peninsula involving a well-known nonprofit. habitat for humanity is planning to build an apartment complex for low income families, but some neighbors now say that building is too big and modern. michelle reports reports. >> if you're just scraping by and the little guy, yeah, it's very tough place to live. >> reporter: a one-bedroom apartment in downtown redwood city will cost $2800 a month, which is why habitat for humanity wants to add additional options for low income families. >> we expect to see hundreds of people applying for these 20 homes. >> reporter: she says the 20 units on jefferson avenue will look like this, five stories of apartments and one story for parking. >> one of the first things it will do is it will block all sunlight from my office. >> reporter: jeff carr works next door to the proposed complex. he fears downtown redwood city is getting too congested.

after collecting most of the money. thumbtack allowed him to solicit business. >> these services are not giving you pros as i would call a pro. it's kind of like anybody can list there, put their name up, hang a shingle and there you go. >> reporter: after kerry complained to thumbtack it removed the first landscaper she hired from its site. >> it also doesn't shut all the way. >> reporter: jeannine hired a contractor from thumbtack to replace her garage door. after paying half the price up front, $2800, that contractor bolted, too. the state confirmed he's also unlicensed. >> he should have been vetted to be not somebody who just scams people, i would hope. otherwise, who are you letting on your site? this could happen to everyone. >> reporter: it could because this service that says we bring you the right pros doesn't check the credentials of contractors. we wondered how many unlicensed contractors are soliciting work on thumbtack. so we posted jobs from landscaping to garage doors to cabinetry and tile work.

we posted 13 jobs and got 37 bids. 18 of them were from unlicensed contractors and another four didn't carry the proper license for the job. nearly 60% of the people bidding on our jobs weren't legally allowed to do them. >> unfortunately, what you found by going online is what we're finding all too often. rick loebs is with the board. he worries that it might be a breeding ground for illegal concerts. in fact -- >> $5,800 for that. >> reporter: the state's undercover sting operation are set up using sites like thumbtack. >> we know they're getting jobs because of these websites. so we're looking for them to, to try to put them out of business. >> reporter: loeb says the board has tried to work with thumbtack to help check a contractor's license at the same time they're bidding on a job. thumbtack could simply add a link to the state's license lookup, but so far that hasn't happened. >> we have an open invitation.

we'd be more than happy to sit down with them and show them how they can easily put a license check right over to us. >> reporter: we wanted to talk to thumbtack about the unlicensed contractors on its site as well as kerry and jeannine's complaints but they did not respond to our e-mails. its press team provided a blanket stating when professionals sign up on thumbtack, they agree to abide by the law, including licensing laws. but our research shows that's not happening. kerry and jeannine both challenged thumbtack to make its site less risky for consumers because until it does, users must vet the right pros themselves. >> really take your time to get the license number, check the license number. >> reporter: thumbtack later told us it does verify licenses of some contractors but didn't specify how or why only some are selected. that's all the more reason to go to the state's website to check a license. you'll find a ling to that website on our website.

kerry and jeannine both made a common mistake. they gave the contractor way too much money up front. state law says contractors can only collect $1,000 or 10% of the kofs the job, whichever is less. payments after that need to be prorated. you're only required to pay for work after it's completed. if you have a consumer complaint, call 888-996-tips or log on to nbc bay area responds.com. they're accused of discriminating against drivers in minority neighborhoods. the california department of insurance is investigating subsidiaries of three major national insurers, nationwide and liberty mutual among them. consumer reports found they were charging more for auto premiums in minority neighborhoods than they were in nonminority areas for similar accidents. the california department of insurance is launching its own investigation. the results will be made public.

>> licorice. >> what kind of home environment do they need to be a successful kitten foster family? >> just somewhere you can keep them safe. if you don't have a separate room that you can use, like a bathroom or use a little tent to keep them kind of contained. the big thing is we have a lot of kittens who are older. even people who are working, people with kids or other animals, you can still foster. >> fostering typically lasts how long? >> up until eight or nine weeks old. it can be from a week to maybe two months. . so that they are ready and old enough to be spayed or neutered. >> yeah, exactly. >> and go to a permanent home? >> exactly. >> talk to us in fresno apparently your volunteers just came back with a bunch of kit n kittens that are ready to be adopted. >> they're all ready for foster. they're babies. we just went down to fresno and brought back 20 or 25 kittens. they need fosters as soon as possible. >> because you don't have room to keep them. >> exactly. >> and you want them to be

socialized. what are some of the thins you need to do to socialize the kittens? >> just spend time with them, handle them, kiss them. pass them around to all your family members. anything like that just to get them used to people. and we've noticed a big difference when they go out into foster how much more socialized and friendly and easily adoptable they are compared to once who aren't. >> any special supplies or things people need to get their home or bathroom, the small room ready. >> we'll give you everything. we'll give you cleaning stuff, everything you need for the kittens. it's pretty easy. >> there's no fee to be a foster family. >> absolutely not. >> how often do these foster families turn into permanent families for kittens? i can't imagine giving them back. >> we call it foster fail. but it's not necessarily a fail, but we do like that because they're getting a home, but we like people to keep fostering because the more animals we foster the more we can bring in. >> okay, fantastic. let's tell people how to do more. you can go to website, pets in
