shocked how quickly that little girl falls spot water and how quickly a man runs in and saves her. >> they go from having fun to leaning over the balcony to in the water. and how about the reflexes of the man who went in. >> more on that in a minute. first, the president's stop in israel. the second stop on his historic overseas trip. speaking at a welcoming ceremony this morning, he urged leaders across the region to work together for peace, adding his trip to saudi arabia left him with new hope. we have complete coverage this morning. we start with nbc white house correspondent kristen welker traveling with the president in jerusalem. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. president trump already making history just by stopping here in israel on his first foreign trip. most presidents travel to places like mexico or canada during their first trip overseas. in brief remarks that he made just moments ago, the president called for unity and the search for middle east peace. he called for all sides to come

together. and he's hoping to pivot away from some of the controversies back at home. all unfolding right here on the world stage. president trump and first lady, melania, visiting some of the holiest sites in israel this morning, the church of the holy sepulchre and the western wall. it comes after a welcome ceremony filled with pageantry. the israeli president and prime minister there for a personal greeting. >> welcome. a very warm welcome. >> reporter: prime minister netanyahu noting the unprecedented air force one flight. president trump, the first to fly direct from saudi arabia to israel, two countries that don't have diplomatic relations. >> i hope that one day, an israeli prime minister will be able to fly from tel aviv to riyadh. >> now, we must work together to build a future, where the nations of the region are at peace and all of our children

can grow and grow up strong grow up free from terrorism and violence. >> reporter: mr. trump aiming to restart peace talks here, a lofty goal that may be further complicated after the president revealed highly classified information from israel during his recent meeting with the russian foreign minister. over the weekend, the president delivering a landmark address in riyadh, calling on the arab and muslim worlds to step up in the fight against terrorism. >> drive them out. drive them out of your places of worship. drive them out of your communities. drive them out of your holy land. and drive them out of this earth. >> reporter: aiming to reach a broader audience, the president trading controversial campaign terms like radical islamic terrorism for softer rhetoric. >> that means honestly confronting the crisis of

islamic extremism and islamists. and islamic terror of all kinds. this is a battle between barbaric criminals who seek to obliterate human life. this is a battle between good and evil. >> reporter: and taking a not-so-subtle swipe at his predecessor, former president barack obama. >> we're not here to lecture. we're not here to tell other people how to live, what to do, who to be or how to worship. >> reporter: saudi leaders are looking to president trump to flex his muscles against enemies like iran. a sign of that optimism, the saudis gave the president a royal welcome, including a late-night dance with diplomacy. and the tangibles, a $110 billion arms deal with saudi arabia, a new high-tech global center for combating extremist ideology. the president also hoping it will help him turn the page from

the controversies dogging him in washington, where republicans play defense after the president called the new special counsel investigating the russian matter a witch hunt. >> i wouldn't call it a witch hunt. we need an intelligence committee report that people have confidence in. >> reporter: new this morning, the president is eyeing a proposal to slash $800 million from medicaid over the next 10 years as a part of his budget proposal. in fact, his chief of staff traveled overnight to help roll out the new budget. back here in israel, security is incredibly tight. in fact, the president is staying in a hotel room that's bomb and bulletproof. savannah, willie. >> kristen welker, thank you. lester holt has made the trip to jerusalem. with more on the president's itinerary, including a stop no sitting u.s. president ever has visited. lester, good morning. >> reporter: hey, willie, good morning to you. the president arrived here this morning on air force one. kristen noted the historic nature, the first flight between

riyadh and tel aviv. but the real history being made here is this is president trump's first trip to this country as president and his first chance to tip his toe in the water of a conflict that's defied his predecessors' best efforts to solve. you might recall a pledge he made a few weeks ago that we will get it done. here in jerusalem, he will see the city that is most visible, the most visible symbol of the conflict, a place of flashpoint of violence at times, a divided jerusalem, a city of significant religious and political importance to muslims and jews as well as christians. among the highlights on the president's schedule here, he will be visiting the church of the holy sepulcher, the place that some christians believe jesus was entombed. a short walk away, the president will visit the western wall, sometimes referred to as the wailing wall. a place of prayer held sacred by jews. and the president will meet with prime minister netanyahu. later he and the first lady will dine with the prime minister and his wife. a west bank visit to meet with

palestinian leader mahmoud abbas is planned as well, as is an address at the israeli museum. the president will be shadowed here by his campaign pledge to move the u.s. embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem, which israelis view as their eternal capital. however, he's been persuaded to hold off on that pledge. it would be seen as an endorsement of israel's claim, in a place still widely regarded as disputed territory. but it's worth watching to see if he makes further comments along the way on his visit here. we'll send it back to you in new york. >> a busy couple of days, lester. thank you very much. lester will have much more live tonight from jerusalem on nbc news "nightly news." u.n. ambassador nikki haley also in the middle east this morning on her first overseas trip. she's getting a firsthand look at the impact of the syrian refugee crisis. today, national correspondent craig melvin is traveling with the outspoken ambassador and sat down with her exclusively about that and other issues facing the trump administration. craig, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good

morning to you. we've been traveling with ambassador haley for a few days now. seeing firsthand the effects of syria's six-year-old war. in a wide-ranging exclusive interview, she talked about the devastating humanitarian crisis that persists here. she also became the first trump cabinet official to endorse the idea of a special counsel to investigate ties between the administration and russia. then, she had another warning for north korea. >> north korea has launched yet another missile. a few weeks ago in an interview, you said that we should continue to try the sanctions. at what point do we try something else? at what point do we concede that's not working? >> we're doing that now, in terms of getting another resolution together, looking at sanctions and how we're going to continue to force it, because this the same movie that keep playing. >> reporter: all options are on the table? >> all options are on the table. >> reporter: what does that mean? what does that include? >> that means we have made it

clear, we don't want to start a fight, so don't give us a reason to have one. >> reporter: another issue demanding attention, president trump sharing sensitive classified information from an ally with russian officials. are you going to reassure them we're capable of handling sensitive information? >> yes. i've talked with director pompeo on this, as well. so much of what i do at the united nations is based on sensitive information. so much of what a lot of the cabinet members, what they do is based on sensitive information. we're trying to reassure all of our counterparts that what they tell us is kept, trusted and valued and we will return the favor. >> reporter: meanwhile, the president hopes the ongoing investigation into ties between his administration and russia does not overshadow his first overseas trip. we need the investigation? >> absolutely need the investigation. >> reporter: trump said the appointment of robert mueller divides this country. you disagree with that assessment. you think it's a good idea. >> i think all of the questions need to be answered so the administration can get back to work.

>> reporter: ambassador haley insists her focus right now is on the worst humanitarian crisis since world war ii, syria. more than a half million dead, another 5 million forced to flee. haley started her day in jordan at the syrian border seeing firsthand how aid is getting through. and then here, a refugee camp, home to 80,000 syrians learning new skills. today, you've been talking to a number of families. what have they been telling you? what were you telling them? >> overwhelmingly, every single one, they just want to go home. that's what their prayer is every day, that one day syria will be peaceful enough to go back. >> reporter: haley says what survivors need here most is psychological support. she maintains what the people need in syria is for assad to go. >> there's no way there's going to be a political solution and peace for the people in syria with assad in charge.

>> so you're calling for regime change? >> what's going to happen, all of the partners are going to call for regime change. >> reporter: are we going to lead the effort for regime change? >> you're going to hear me talk about how awful assad is every chance i get. >> reporter: right now, ambassador haley is meeting with king abdullah ii of jordan. then she will head to turkey later today. president trump, as you know, has vowed to cut aid to the united nations. ambassador haley told me yesterday that the united states will continue to remain the leader in this world when it comes to humanitarian relief. savannah, willie? >> craig melvin, thank you very much. back here at home, dozens of graduates of the university of notre dame, walked out of their commencement ceremony in protest after mike pence began his speech. some booed, the others cheered. the vice president made no mention of what was happening. afterwards, the students said they were protesting the trump administration stance on immigration and lgbt rights.

>> in the meantime, it was a deadly weekend on the world's highest mountain top. at least three people died trying to climb mt. everest. among them, a doctor from alabama. this morning, his family is speaking out. nbc's kelly cobiella has that story. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. such a sad story. there's a record number of climbers on everest this climbing season. that season ends in just nine days. and the race to the top has proved deadly for this doctor and dad from alabama. the view from the top of the world, everest at 29,000 feet. for 50-year-old roland yearwood, loving father, doctor and all around adventurer, it was his ultimate goal and his second try to reach the summit. >> he was extremely prepared for this. he was confident that, you know, he was going to reach the top and come back down and come back home. >> reporter: yearwood was on the mountain in 2015 when a devastating earthquake shook nepal and everest, killing at least 19 climbers and sherpas. >> he wanted to work even harder

to go back up there. that's all he thought about and wanted to do. >> reporter: on sunday, yearwood made it to the infamous death zone. at 27,500 feet, within reach of a nearly vertical section known as the hillary step. the final climb to the top, where every breath and every move is a struggle. climbers said the earthquake shook part of the rock face loose. add to that bad weather this year and a record number of climbers. >> a lot of climbers have been waiting at base camp. now there's a window open. when you have traffic jams up in the death zone, that's never good. >> reporter: it's not clear whether yearwood reached the summit or why he didn't make it back. his daughter said he died of altitude sickness, his body still on the mountain. >> he was really honest, really kind, a generous person. i was lucky to have him as a dad. he gets to be in the place he wanted to, you know, accomplish his goal. that's where it's going to be forever. >> reporter: yearwood's sherpa was able to make it off of the

mountain. he's due back at base camp today. and the family is hoping the mountain guide will be able to shed some light on what happened sunday. two other climbers, one from slovakia, one from australia, also died on the mountain on sunday. and a third, a climber from india, is still missing this morning. savannah, willie. >> as if we needed a reminder it's an incredibly dangerous thing to do. thank you very much. now, to dramatic video of a gas station fire in michigan. >> whoa. oh, my god. oh, my god. >> the building's facade comes crashing down, pinning a firefighter underneath it. this all happened over the weekend in iron mountain. several firefighters rushed in to pull their fellow firefighter from under the burning metal. he was trapped for two minutes before being rescued. the firefighter was taken to the hospital where he was treated for burns but thankfully, official say he now is doing well. in other news, the greatest show on earth is no more. the ringling brothers and

barnum & bailey circus folded up its big top for good last night after its 146 year run and one last performance. nbc's kerry sanders is on the long island with the end of an era. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. they say the circus is a town with no zip code. performers and animals traveling from community-to-community on the circus train. this morning, one last trip home to florida. ironically, since they announced the circus was going to go out of business in january, every show has been sold out. and sunday's finale was no exception. >> ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages, who is ready for the greatest show on earth? >> reporter: for 146 years, the circus was a constant source of fun and amazement. but no more. ♪ among the 14,000 who crammed into the nassau coliseum to watch the final performance sunday, former members of the circus and, of course, children, like 8-year-old rachel mower. you know this is the last time

it will ever happen? >> yeah. >> what do you think of that? >> sad. >> reporter: the spellbinding acts and the quiet teams behind the scenes that kept the circus running all these years are this morning unemployed. upwards of 500 people, including the florida horse team, originally from kazakhstan. 7-year-old betenico, was born between performances. >> the show is closing. >> my brain is understanding but my heart cannot take it yet. >> reporter: animal rights activists protesting even this last show, played a significant role in the circus's demise. under mounting public pressure, ringling retired its elephants last year. with its biggest stars gone, ticket sales dropped dramatically. >> i am sad for the prub. >> 18 years ago, jonathan became the circus's first black ring master. now, he's the last ever. the circus, part of the fabric

of america, was something few guessed would on day just die. >> this is a family breaking up. this is a culture coming to an end. >> reporter: sunday night -- >> we thank you for coming on out tonight, to this historic occasion. >> reporter: the ringmaster and the feld family that owned the circus said good-bye. >> this is the greatest show on earth. >> reporter: hugs, tears. ♪ should old acquaintance be forgot ♪ >> reporter: and the trademark phrase, one last time. >> farewell from the greatest show on earth. >> reporter: the crowd was on its feet for the last 11 minutes of the show. crying, clapping, right along with those who were down there performing. the elephants were retired to a sanctuary in florida. the other animals will either go to other sanctuaries or ringling says some will go to circuses in europe. and for anyone who is wondering

if this is just a stunt, circus management says, not happening. it's over. savannah. >> it is really the end of an era for so many people. kerry, thank you. >> how many things in life can you say lasted 150 years almost. it's a pretty extraordinary run. let's get a check of the weather. al is at san diego naval base. al, good morning. >> i remember my dad taking me to the circus, madison square garden, 1960. i'll never forgot it. it's hard to forget being on the deck of an amphibious assault ship. this is uss essex. we'll tell you why we're here a little later. we also want to tell you about severe weather hitting the gulf coast. starting with the same weather that hit texas yesterday. this is laredo, texas. torrential winds, hail, damaging, flooding rains. it was a big deal. you see the damage the winds did. no word whether this was a tornado or straight-line winds.

but it did a lot of damage. that's making its way into the central gulf. as we look on the radar, you can see coming out of texas and into louisiana. we have flash flood watches and flash flood warnings, stretching from texas all the way into atlanta. this is heavy rain going to make its way through the gulf coast, into the southeast. rounds of torrential rain. we've got flash flood watches and warnings and a risk of strong floods making their way through the gulf coast. the heaviest area from texas into parts of mississippi. you can see that heavy rain, four to six inches in some spots. we'll get to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds. . is this a lug wrench? maybe? you can leave worry behind when liberty stands with you™.

you can qualify for two treatments at no cost. stand up to chronic migraine. talk to a headache specialist today. ==vo== one person is in custody .. and police are still lng good morning. it's 7:26 on your monday. i'm sam brock. an update to breaking news we have been following all morning. one person in custody and police are actively looking for others after police officers exchanged gunfire in san francisco's bay view district last night. the crime tape there, police say it happened around 11:00 last night. that's when officers were responding to reports of a home invasion robbery on cusoda avenue in the bay view. they saw several people running from the back of a house. one of them fired shots at officers who then fired shots right back. police say that no one was struck and no one was injured. officers did manage to detain one of those suspects and a perimeter was set up. that's what you were looking at earlier. police have made no more arrests other than that. >> this monday for most people means another day of hot

weather. >> yeah, especially inland as we see all the sunshine looking live right now in san jose. but we do have the clouds and the fog starting out in san francisco. i know you can't tell, this is the golden gate bridge. as we go thru the day, the fog clears out. it will be cooler along the coastline as the temperatures start out in the 50s now, heading up to 88 degrees for san jose. 95 for livermore. still very hot there, but then as we look at the coast, 75 in san francisco, at half moon bay, up to 62 degrees. let's see how the roads are moving with mike. >> they're moving pretty well. it's monday morning. we're seeing the northbound route, typical for the south bay, showing a slower drive. the tri-valley recovering pretty well after an earlier crash in sunol. extra slow through livermore for westbound 580. approaching capital expressway, i have seen this build. no crashes reported by chp, but i'm tracking that because you can see how slow it is compared to the rest of sillicon valley. back to you.

back now 7:30 on a monday morning. it's may 22nd, 2017. and our crowd is gearing up for a good one. rascal flatts, going to have that in our 8:30 half hour. i'm very excited. >> looking forward to it. >> "life is a highway." >> you're a big fan. >> yes. here's a look at what's making headlines right now. president trump arrived in israel this morning to push for peace in the middle east. he had a talk with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, he's visiting several holy sites in jerusalem including the western wall, making president trump the first sitting u.s. president to do that. jury selection begins today in bill cosby's trial, accused of drugging and assaulting a

woman at his home in philadelphia, but jurors are being picked in pittsburgh, 300 miles from where the trial will be heard. his attorneys demanded that. they're looking for jurors that have not been influenced by the publicity in the case. we'll have a live report from the courthouse straight ahead. more rain is expected in parts of the south, after record-breaking rain over the weekend. heavy storms struck texas and montgomery, alabama, was soaked by eight inches in a few hours. now, to startling video that will have you talking. a crowd was watching a sea lion from a pier when it suddenly grabbed a young girl from the back of her dress and pulled her into the water. that led to a dramatic rescue. miguel almaguer is in vancouver where it happened. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it happened all right here. the little girl that was grabbed by the sea lion has not been identified. her family also never stopped to ask for help. not before the scare of a lifetime. a day on the warf, popular with

tourists, begins with laughs. but suddenly turns to panic and fear. a terrifying close call with a massive sea lion, that unexpectedly yanked a little girl off of a pier and pulled her under water. the girl was rescued by a man who jumped in after her. both pulled to safety. and both appeared unhurt. >> i'm a little terrified of that thing now. >> reporter: michael captured the attack on his cell phone. >> pretty dangerous. it looks cute and all but you never know how it's going to act. >> reporter: his video shows the sea lion eating a piece of bread someone dropped in the water. a man held out his hand as if trying to pet the animal. and then, the sea lion, weighing up to 700 pounds, shoots out of the water within inches of the girl. the crowd laughs nervously, but no one moves the child away from

the edge. seconds later, this -- the warf's harbormaster says this should be a warning to never feed or approach sea lions. >> total stupidity on the part of the adults. not only do you let your family members feed a wild animal, but then they went and let their little girl sit on the edge of the dock, with her back to it, and her dress hanging over. >> reporter: these tourists didn't hear the message. getting another scare in the exact same spot. see lions rarely attack humans but similar incidents have been posted online, involving fish. >> don't go up to a bear in the forest and hand it a ham sandwich. don't go to the dock and throw crackers at a sea lion. it's common sense. >> reporter: a close call with a powerful creature that could have quickly turned deadly. experts say that while sea lions and their pups

look at these temperatures. from buffalo to boston, down to philadelphia, temperatures 10 to 15 degrees below average. a dip in the jet stream brings school air from chicago to houston, where it's on the warmer side. out west, that's where it stays hot. the circulating air on that upper high, brings temperatures above average, from phoenix to you yuma, to medford, oregon, where it will get around 90 degrees today. that's what's going on around the country. here's what's ha good morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. we're seeing the fog in san francisco now. it will be clearing out to give us some sunshine today and high temperatures in the mid 70s and then we begin the cooler trend for the rest of the week. inland valleys will still be very hot, in the low 90s today, and tomorrow, 82 degrees on wednesday. and then it will be nice and refreshing by thursday. not a bad weekend on the way either. as we head into memorial day, we'll see the temperatures in the upper 70s to lower 80s.

==vo== . e person is in cust good mond morning. 8:26. one person is in custody, police still looking for others after san francisco police officers exchanged gunfire in the bayview district last night. police say this all began about 11:00 last night and that's when police officers were responding to a home invasion robbery on quesada avenue. police say when they got to the house they saw several people running from the back of the home away, one fired at police officers and the officers returned fire. police say that nobody was struck or injured and as you see right there, officers did manage to detain one suspect and then set up a perimeter to try to find the others. so far police have made no more arrests. as soon as we have an update we' we'll bring that to you. mike inouye is tracking residual

that would make me feel better. >> kyle chandler, good morning. >> nice to meet you. >> nice to meet you, as well. the line in the show is, we're not bad people. but we did a bad thing. kyle, i watched the show. are you sure john is a good person? >> he's a very good person. the writers of the show, when i first met them, they said, we have an idea for a family. we want to look at it a different way. the whole thing could fall apart. it may not work. i was excited at that point. i said, i'm in. this is a show about a family with a tremendous amount of dark secrets. and throughout the beginning of the whole process, as an actor, i didn't ask questions. an we find out throughout the seasons, it wasn't until the final season that i ask questions. i need to know what happens in the last few episodes. >> i mentioned it's the third and final season. do you feel like you're ready to put a bow on this show? >> it ends in a good place.

and i'm not happy that it ended. but i'm glad it ended where it did because it ended strong. and i like that about shows when they don't push too far. they'll still ask the audience to want a little bit more. but it doesn't go too far. and it's a good show. it's a strong show. i'm proud of it. >> it would be impossible in a minute or so to recap and get people ready that haven't seen the first two seasons. for people dialling in, it's on netflix. what is the show about? >> the show is about a fally who is loaded down with a tremendous amount of dark secrets. and as the show goes on from the very beginning, the secrets are revealed. one thing that you have to know about the show is that the creators of the show, the kessler brothers and daniel zelman, they create ed a show - they did "damages" before this. and "damages," there's a lot of reveals and a lot of what they do with the editing that makes it interesting to watch.

and it's a nonlinear process when they edit it. they mix it up to do the story telling. i never know watching the final season, uh won't know exactly how it came out. and because we -- we do different scenes in different ways, where we rehearse in different ways, we act them out in different ways, we tonight know what take they'll use. the storylines and the story can change and we won't know until we view it. >> you starred on "friday night lig lights" here. >> did that make sense to you? >> you've done network shows and a netflix show for three seasons. as an actor, is the streaming experience different for you, other than the fact it gets released at one time? >> yeah. it's complete different -- having grown up the other way. the first show that my wife and i binged was "24."
