of south san francisco...wher e we )re following an breaking news this morning out of south san francisco where we're following an officer-involved shooting. here's a look at the scene so far, live. obviously, a very active police presence. good morning to you. thanks for joining us on this wednesday morning. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. we'll get to that story momentarily. first, the weather story for your wednesday. kari hall joining us. >> our temperatures will be cooler, especially inland, as we start out with mild weather this morning and a few more clouds rolling across the bay area. we are cloudy in the south bay. it's 58 degrees in the tri-valley. a mild start. mostly clear there. peninsula, 57, and east bay up to 56 degrees today. then as you head to the north bay, you see more clouds and a

cool 50 degrees. as we head into the afternoon, it will be very nice today. a mostly sunny sky and highs reaching into the upper 70s to low 80s inland and along the bay and the coast it will be 63 degrees. let's head over to mike checking in with the tri-valley. >> we're looking at the speed sensors and they're looking really good except i spotted this for 680 from sunol to pleasanton. there's a road crew that just cleared up. there may be another clearing for the area as you're heading south to the sunol exit. then a live look at oakland where activity just cleared. one set of flashing lights. there was a fire in the trees just off the side of 880 by the coliseum parking lot that was going on, not affecting the lanes of the freeway, and all but one vehicle have cleared now. >> let's get back to our breaking news now. again, this is out of south san francisco. we have a crew on the scene of it deadly police officer-involved shooting.

>> we had a photographing there all morning long. pete suratos just arrived at the scene. what can you tell us, pete? >> reporter: good morning to you. waiting for a sergeant to get on scene to give us more details on what led to the shooting or what took place, but i can tell you there's a coroner's van near this block on the 3700 block in south san francisco. you see a very active scene. from our vantage point, you can see a number of agencies here. you see them looking at a house in the area, looks to be in the garage area, but let's show you the video from earlier when this took place. a sergeant is en route to give us more details. what i can report is there are a number of agencies. i see the san mateo sheriff's agency, the south san francisco police. a coroner's van is on site as well as a forensics team. they did arrive here roughly at 12:00 a.m., but that's roughly

all the details we have at the time. we're waiting for the sergeant en route to tell us what took place in the shooting. we'll continue to monitor this situation and have an update at the top of the next hour. >> thank you, pete. >> remembering the lives lost in manchester this morning as we take a look at the growing memorial right now in england, where as you can see, flowers have been placed down. candles are burning. all of nat in honor of the 22 victims of monday night's attack. >> now, breaking news in the last ten minutes. manchester police announcing they have identified all of the victims of the attack. more work is now needed before all the families are notified. >> also overnight, three more men in connection to the suicide bombing at the ariana grande concert were arrested in a raid. investigators say they're still trying to determine if the bomber worked alone. in the meantime, british newspapers the guardian and the sun are publishing photos allegedly of the suicide bomber, 22-year-old salman abedi.

>> live to rome where president trump is meeting with the italian president and prime minister right about now. but it was a much anticipated visit with pope francis that headlined the president's trip to italy. now video of the president and first lady there meeting with the pontiff. pope francis and president trump met privately about for a half hour or so. as parting gifts, the pope gave trump his papal letter on the environment. president trump gave the pope a set of books, including ones written by dr. martin luther king jr. >> new details in the last hour. weary passengers arrived at sfo after a huge scare and emergency evacuation. the plane deployed emergency chutes affan engine caught fire while awaiting takeoff. at least three passengers suffered minor injuries, the incident shut down the airport for several hours. bob redell is at sfo hoping to talk with passengers. they're expected to land any moment now.

leaders are considering a new modified sexual harassment policy and it's inspired by input from female students. groups including alliance for girls provided new ideas for modified policy. they believe that this new policy better represents girls with color and more accurately reflects cultural norms in oakland schools. today, that policy will be presented to the school board. >> new this morning, despite objections from parents and students, the alameda school district has voted to shut down in a matter of weeks a school deemed seismically unsafe. lum elementary school could collapse in a catastrophic earthquake. parents and students hoped board members would delay the vote and consider other options before closing the school. the chronicle reports the board went ahead with the plan to close the campus at the end of the school yer. roughly 500 students will have to transfer next fall to several other schools. >> quite the shuffle. >> we saw the fog and clouds coming in. a very different feel here

existing home sales and minutes from the fed meeting earlier this month. expectations are growing that the fed will hike interest rates again in june. the dow rising, the nasdaq up five to 6138. meanwhile, this could be the best weekend to plan a road trip, research data shows going into memorial day, gas prices are more than 20% cheaper than the annual average, going back to 2005, prices are in fact so low that it's only been cheaper to fill your tank in two other years, in 2016 and 2005, the investment group said this is notable because the lower prices are occurring during a tim of the year where they're normally at their strongest. and warby parker wants to help you skip the trip to the eye doctor. they're testing a new prescription app to perform a 20-minute series of tests that are reviewed by an optometrist.

for now, the app is only available for people 18 to 40 in california, florida, new york, and virginia who have already had warby parker glasses. back over to you. >> a lot of requirements there. thanks a lot. >> 4:45 right now. nature helping turn one of california's most popular tourist spots into an exclusive locale. we told you about it in today in the bay, the landslide over the weekend shut off access from highway 101 to big sur. a bridge access had already cut off access from the north. these days, the only way to get to big sur is by a helicopter. those rides don't come cheap. new hotel packages including the helicopter trip from the airport are starting at just over $4,000. imagine the view, though. >> that sounds like a package you're getting ready to auction off, for the right price. >> with mike inouye. >> i'll report at least the helicopter traffic for you. >> can you imagine how much money these hotels are losing?

that may be better for them to just opt for the helicopter ride. >> i think a lot of people may want to be air lifted to napa given what the traffic is going to look like on saturday. >> coming home is the problem. >> always. it's going to be such a nice weekend. you won't want it to end. at least for some, it will be a long weekend as we get a look at the low clouds hovering over san francisco right now. the mist and drizzle starting out the day, and it's 53 degrees with a high today up to 63 today. it's going to be nice and cool. and we do have to deal with the clouds, at least for the first part of the day, but there will be some clearing as our temperatures will be right at about average, feeling cool out there, and for the rest of the week, we will have foggy starts and sunny days, and we will not see much of a change in this pattern over the next several days. as you step out the door, it's 54 degrees in livermore. 55 in palo alto, and 54 degrees right now in napa. and then as we go into this afternoon, in the south bay,

it's going to feel so much nicer reaching into the mid to upper 70s. up to 76 degrees in morgan hill. milpitas, 75 degrees. 81 in danville, while oakland will be up to 69 degrees. the peninsula, 58 degrees at half moon bay, but 69 in san mateo. mission district up to 63 today, and 70 in mill valley. in novato today, 74 degrees. our temperatures coming back down. as you get ready to dress for the day, we're getting ready for the start of the day with a jacket and then later on this afternoon, as it feels nicer, it will be a day for some short sleeves. just a couple tips there as you get ready for the day. and the next several days as we won't see much of a change here in san francisco, once again, some fog and some drizzle to start out. even as we head into the memorial day weekend, and then for the inland areas, it will be warm today. a few degrees dip in our temperatures for the next couple days, and then warming up once again just in time for the

weekend. and mike says you have new video of a geyser in concord. >> didn't know about this one, did you? the concord geyser. errr not joking about this. this is a fire hydrant which has sheared off at highway port chicago. this is an on ramp access to 242. that hydrant, presumably the one that got knocked off, 75 feet high as far as the geyser went for two hours in the area. a lot of water being cleared up. concord pd talked about traffic control, and so are we. just off 242. cuts between highway 4 and that area. it's a major roadway. later on in the commute, we'll track that. also, gas stations, a couple places to get coffee, a lot of folks use that as access to fuel their body and car getting over to the freeway. we'll watch this carefully. 242, 680, highway 4 all moving slowly because it's very early. traffic is light at 4:48.

here southbound 680, that shows slowing coming down through sunol out of pleasanton. the overnight road work still has crews in the area and they haven't cleared up everything so there will likely be more slowing. it will continue on until 6:00, but hopefully by then it's completely clear because that's when the build happens for the tri-valley and east bay. south bay and peninsula absolutely no problems. we'll track that. north bay moving well as well. >> good to hear. >> 4:49. a follow-up, a federal judge in san francisco has agreed to reconsider his decision to block president trump's executive order denying funds to sanctuary cities. last month, a judge temporarily blocked the order. lawsuits were filed by bay area governments, santa clara county and san francisco. the department of justice is now arguing a new memo from jeff sessions which narrows the interpretation of the order only withholding some grants, not all federal funding, deserves another look. >> meantime, outrage right now

over the president's newly released budget is growing in both parties. his own, the republican party, and for democrats. dems on capitol hill along with a coalition of anti-poverty labor civil rights and religious leaders are all protesting against the proposed budget later today. it was released yesterday. a $4.1 trillion budget that cuts about $1.7 trillion from poverty programs. cuts are also proposed for biomedical research and students loans. many republicans in congress are calling those cuts, quote, harmful. >> it's 4:50 right now. some california lawmakers are hoping to change the state's constitution to take direct control over spending of the uc president's office. the chronicle reports a constitutional amendment was introduced yesterday by a state senator from los angeles. if passed, it would ask voters whether the state can take over the school's budget. in california history now, in 1879, voters made uc a public press, giving its board full

governing power and control, and their goal was to shield the system from politics. >> an east bay community is pitching in for some surveillance. the moraga community foundation is hoping to raise $60,000 to go toward buying cameras to place around town. neighboring lafayette and merinda are using the same technology. >> one of its flight attendants asked a san francisco man with a prosthetic man to move seats. we first aired this story monday night at 11:00. they said the flight attendant asked him to move from the emergency exit row because of his leg. he recorded the action and did move. the airline said it had no intention to make him uncomfortable and they reserve the right to judge whether the passenger would be able to perform the required safety procedures in case of an emergency. >> coming up, what does a $5 million makeover look like? you can find out today when alamo square reopens today after

high temperatures reaching the upper 70s for concord and livermore. 78 degrees. also 78 for san jose, and 75 for napa. oakland, 69. and san francisco today up to 63 degrees. we'll talk more about whether like this heading into the holiday weekend. that's coming up in eight minutes. mike says there's a very slow drive showing up in the tri-valley. >> we have been following this for about a half hour over here on 680. the rest of the bay does move well, but from pleasanton to sunol, a good amount of slowing. we have seen it get easier and harder for the next few minutes. i do believe this is the last of the crew clearing with the lane closures through the area, but we'll track that very closely. as a result of this, we have a slower drive time right in the middle there, through the tri-valley. again, this started to improve in the last couple minutes. and another crash in san rumome i'll show you coming up. >> busy morning out there. >> we're also covering breaking news coming from south san
