upper 70s for concord and livermore. 78 degrees. also 78 for san jose, and 75 for napa. oakland, 69. and san francisco today up to 63 degrees. we'll talk more about whether like this heading into the holiday weekend. that's coming up in eight minutes. mike says there's a very slow drive showing up in the tri-valley. >> we have been following this for about a half hour over here on 680. the rest of the bay does move well, but from pleasanton to sunol, a good amount of slowing. we have seen it get easier and harder for the next few minutes. i do believe this is the last of the crew clearing with the lane closures through the area, but we'll track that very closely. as a result of this, we have a slower drive time right in the middle there, through the tri-valley. again, this started to improve in the last couple minutes. and another crash in san rumome i'll show you coming up. >> busy morning out there. >> we're also covering breaking news coming from south san francisco where police officers opened fire overnight, killing a

suspect. it's a story we've been following for hours. >> pete suratos joining us live right now from the scene off skyline boulevard, with the latest. we can tell behind you, all kinds of police presence. what do you know so far? >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. a very active scene here on the 3700 block of cork place in south san francisco. i want to show you what's taking place behind me, as i mentioned in the last report. a number of agencies, san mateo sheriff's office, south san francisco police. a coroner's van on site as well as a forensics team, and we're expecting the first media briefing to take place in the next half hour, but i was able to get some new details from authorities not too long ago. just got off the phone with them. they're telling me they responded to a disturbance on this block. that's why you have people in front of this home right now. they responded to a disturbance roughly before 12:00 a.m. involving a person with a firearm. the person was outside holding a

shotgun at the time. officers told the person to comply, but that failed. that's when shots were fired. we can report that no officers were injured during this time. we're hoping to get more details on exactly what took place here at this shooting. during that media briefing in the next half hour, we can take you back out here live. you can see the active scene. we're going to hear shortly from the sergeant for more details, but they're saying it was a disturbance in this area. this individual was holding a shotgun and told to comply and did not, and that's what led to shots be fired. we'll have another update at the top of next hour. back to you in the studio. >> we'll wait for those updates. thank you very much. >> we continue to track the latest out of manchester this morning. look at the memorial site that just continues to grow. as flowers, you see there, placed in honor of the 22 victims killed in the horrific terror attack that happened on monday. with manchester, the rest of the world right now demonstrating its grief here, from the empire state building to the eiffel

tower to the coliseum in rome, and the tallest skyscraper in the world in dubai, the tributes to the victims continue to grow. less than an hour ago, major developments to tell you about. manchester police announcing they had identified all of the victims in the bombing. the youngest just eight years old. we knew that. now police will begin notifying families. in the meantime, police in manchester in the investigation have arrested three more men in connection to the bombing. the suicide bomber, 22-year-old salmon ababeabedi, was born and raised in the city he attacked. he was trained abroad by a terrorist organization, though his allegiance isn't clear now. police have also arrested his brother and they have not ruled out the ability he had a lot of help carrying out the attack. the city of manchester is sending out a powerful message. >> manchester comes together and we stand strong, and nothing is

written by dr. martin luther king jr. the meeting was much anticipated given how differently the two leaders view world issues like climate change, immigration, and arms sales. a fedex employee behind bars this morning and he's accused of burglarizing several homes on the peninsula. today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us live from menlo park with the details. he reportedly was committing these burglaries on the job? >> a little unnerving to hear this because so many of us get packages delivered by fedex and other agencies. we're on trinity drive, and this is where the third home was allegedly burglarized by 57-year-old kevin hayward as he was working as a delivery driver contracted by fed ex. . police said he burglarized a home in atherton on may 3rd. two days later, he hit another home. on may 17th is when he came to

the home on trinity drive and burglarized the home around 7:00 in the evening. the menlo park police say that kevin baker has a history. he's already a convicted felon. some reaching out to fedex via twitter, e-mail, phone calls. waking everybody up to find out how a convicted felon came to be a driver for fedex. we hope to have that for you at 6:00. in menlo park, kris sanchez, today in the bay. >> thank you very much. >> 5:06. new details this morning, back to the drawing board for dublin school board leaders who voted down the plan for a new high school. it called for campus across from the east county hall of justice, a half a mile from santa rita jail. parents and students packed the meeting to voice concerns about the plan. not only was the location controversial, but some parents believe the site would not be large enough to fit the kind of campus that now must be builts. >> now they're going to bus the kids over here to the other side of dublin? this is impractical. >> you would only need like one

incident to happen, it goes down the drain. why would we even send our kids there? >> the trustees voted 3-2 against that proposal. the district is still hoping to have a new school ready to go within the next six years. it's 5:07, with cloudy skies starting out this morning. if you're planning to hit the links today at half moon bay, it will be cloudy and also foggy at times. low visibility. we will also have some cool temperatures starting out in the mid 50s, reaching 60 later today. that will be the case all along the coastline as we will see some cool air staying with us. for the inland areas, much more comfortable. a look at the day planner for san jose starting out at 58 degrees. reaching the upper 70s today, and it will be so comfortable and nice with all of that 9. we'll take a look ahead to the day planner for santa clara. that's coming up in about three minutes. mike's starting with a crash in san ramon. >> 680 southbound, the direction where the crash is located.

but we don't see any problems for the sensors, as we got a look at the entire bay, we zoom into this direction out of danville, and there is a smooth flow of traffic there, but then farther south, that's the 680 section that has the slower drive. seeing the sensors starting to move from red to orange and yellow, and by that pattern, i would say that they are clearing the last of the crew through the area and southbound to pleasanton and in towards sunol from the overnight road work. as we're looking at your maintenance on the railways, no delays because they cleared all the maintenance vehicles. b.a.r.t. is off to a good start today. >> no delays, thank you. >> coming up a pricier ride. the city imposing a fee on ride sharing companies like uber and lyft. >> plus, is the president's budget dead on arrival in washington?

it's 5:11 now. cloudy skies, lookb live over san jose. i want to show you the temperature trend for santa clara. we start out needing long sleeves as the temperatures will be cool, but look at how the temperatures quickly warm up today into the low 70s by early afternoon.

and then today up to 76 degrees at 4:00. we'll enjoy the sunshine and cooler weather, and we'll see more of that heading into the holiday weekend. i'll have a look at that coming up at 5:17. >> and the middle time continues to improve. south 680 through the earlier construction zone. slow in towards sunol. also tracking that crash in san ramon. >> we all take ride sharing because it represents such a good deal, relative to the other options, right? but now a san francisco supervisor has a plan to fix some of the congestion problems in the city, and it involves proposing a ride sharing fee. this is jane kim's idea. looking at a possible 20 cents per ride fee. the state of massachusetts has a pretty similar fee that's already in place. if it were to be adopted, it would apply to both lyft and uber rides. circling and double parking by ride sharing cars are causing congestion. money from the fees would help to reg that. >> and san francisco supervisors

are making a deal with developers. they can build higher only if they include affordable housing. the board passed that legislation yesterday. it allows developers building along major transit corridors to build up to 20 feet higher if now 30% of the units are affordable housing. supervisors say the move could add about 5,000 new affordable housingts over the next 20 years. >> a smartphone war appears to be heating up. apple has launched a new campaign to lure away android users. a new section on apple's website is designed to get consumers to make that switch. it features the headline, life is easier on the iphone and answers questions about why users should consider switching. globally, android devices outnumber iphones by about three to one. >> that's pretty amazing. i can't imagine they do in the united states. >> microsoft trying to steal away customers too. >> microsoft just unveiled its

latest version of its surface pro tablet, microsoft's answer to the ipad. this would be generation five for the surface pro, as you see a close-up. this will hit stores in mid-june. uber will pay millions to drivers in new york city the company discovered it had been underpaying for years. uber said it miscalculated. each driver will get on average $900. this is not the first time uber has discovered it was underpaying drivers. you remember that scandal that hit volkswagen cheating customers and regulators with software that fakes emissions data? well, fiat chrysler has now been accused of something similar. the justice department says chrysler has used software in more than 100,000 cars to cheat emissions tests. the company says it has not. >> the dow gained again tuesday. the fourth day of gains in a roy. we'll get the latest later this morning. washington has a chance to see president trump's budget.

big thumbs down for both sides. dead on arrival is the phrase we're hearing most, as we previewed for you on monday the white house budget proposed severe cuts for programs for the poor and children. i talked to barbara lee, the congressman out of the east bay, who points out not only does the budget hurt her constituents in oakland, it hurts trump's most loyal voters in the south and rust belt. >> hopefully they will see the light now and they will wake up and understand that he stands for the billionaires and millionaires, and what he's doing is cutting budgets that they rely on. >> now, obviously, congress has the final word on what the budget really is because they hold the purse strings. mr. trump in the past has had the opening gambits that are wild ideas as negotiating ploys. we'll see how it works out. >> can we stop calling him the populist candidate? he wants to cut medicaid, veterans benefits.

>> no question. >> developing story. a look at this cell phone video of a tornado tearing through a central north carolina town. 100 miles per hour. this happened yesterday. the town is about 20 miles west of fayetteville. some brave soul was out there. michael bartlett, it looks like, taking this video. now, the twister is violent, but only one person suffered minor injuries. listen to the reverend who took the cell phone video describing the horrifying moments. >> the sound, a freight train and it was coming. like this can't be happening. you think you know how you will respond in those situations. when you're in the situation, it's different. >> the small town of 200 people did suffer plenty of damage. it's under a state of emergency this morning. >> 5:15 right now. here in the bay area, we're experiencing the cooldown kari has been telling us was coming. >> i'm so glad. it was so hot. and you're just trying to find ways to cool off. i'm so glad i can leave the air

conditioner off today and you'll still have weather warm enough to enjoy. that's what we're looking forward to as we head into the next several days. and the holiday weekend is upon us. it's wednesday. and we're still seeing those low clouds over hayes valley. in san francisco, misting at times and starting out the day drizzling. we'll see it clearing out. the temperature now at 54 degrees. fairly mild and it will be a warm day for the valleys, but we're not talking about near record heat here. we're up to 79 des in concord, comparing that to 90 degrees yesterday. and in livermore, 78 degrees. also 78 in san jose, palo alto, 76 degrees, and half moon bay, we'll keep the clouds and fog and only make it up to 59 degrees while napa will get some sunshine today and highs in the mid 70s. let's go through the day in oakland. we will be in the upper 50s at 8:00, and then your lunchtime temperature at 63 degrees.

you may be wearing long sleeves all day there. at least it will be sunny. sunglasses, a necessity. if you want to head farther to the north to sonoma wine country, it will be cool to start, but it will be a very nice and comfortable afternoon for hanging out at some of the vineyards there. 72 degrees at 4:00. if you're hitting the road, heading to the sierra, this is a live look at heavenly this morning as we see the sun rise, it's all clear, but there will be rain in the forecast by friday, and the next couple days, also very warm temperatures reaching into the low 70s. we've got sun today and tomorrow. a high of 68 degrees on thursday. we'll bring it back to san francisco, going to see the high temperatures in the low to mid 60s. not a drop of rain in the forecast, but you may get the morning drizzle to keep everything bright and green. and then as we go inland, it will be 80 degrees today and the high temperature by the end of the week will be 74 degrees. it will come up just a couple degrees in time for the holiday

weekend. even memorial day is going to be, but a little warmer. some of those spots hitting 82 degrees. have a look at some events going on. that's coming up later, but mike is still focused on i-680. >> i want folks to know i'm looking at the entire bay, but we're focused on the slower drive and the crash we have been outlining. got word instead of the fast lane, it's now the slow blocked by a crew helping out with the crash. south 680. so you'll find slowing right at the scene, but as you're coming down through danville and in toward the dublin interchange, speeds overall are looking okay. and speeds are looking a lot better through pleasanton and in through sunol. it does look like the overnight road crew did clear just after 5:00, and because of that, we have fast breaks and residual delay. that's it for the tri-valley, and after this cleared up, we should get back to the morning commute. a smooth ride on all the transit agencies. let's get you to the waze

been working without a contract for nearly a year. the district is expecting a big drop off in students attendance today as well. >> staying in the north bay, the north bay's new smart train transitt service is reportedly making some tweaks to its schedule. even before its official launch. new, marin is reporting the agency made some revisions after feedback about gaps during commute hours. the revised schedule adds trains in peak hours and scaled back midday service when it's not as busy. passengers can start using the smart trains between san rafael and santa rosa as soon as next month. >> a recall for panchts to look out for this morning. thousands of dinocraft ride-on tours are being recalled because the acceleration pedal can stick, which can cause a child to fall or crash. they have received 19 reports of pedals sticking and injuries

good wednesday morning to you. taking a live look outside, this time from the south bay this morning. cooler temperatures are arriving today. they continue this week, and it's a little early. we're not ready for summer just yet. stop bugging kari. >> she's probably the happiest. laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. kari, you have been telling us, come on in. don't worry, there heat is not going to last. >> we made it past the peak of the heat, past the couple first days of the week. we are officially on hump day, right? as we look outside at san jose, it's going to start out at 58 degrees. you can see the clouds and the high today, 78 degrees. that's not bad. let me show you the trend as we

go through the day, starting out in the 50s and then as the sun starts to come out, we'll see the temperatures warming up. by noon, 71 degrees. i'll show you the bigger picture, taking a look ahead to the holiday weekend. that's coming up in six minutes, and mike is still tracking the changes in tri-valley. >> changes for the better and also changes for what you would expect here in the tri-valley, south bay, peninsula, north bay, no major issues. we do focus on 680. slower travel time here. 680 south through pleasanton, recovering from the earl traffic break as they clear the road crews. all lanes clear now, and 580 and 84 showing the build typical of this time of day. also typical, the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights have been turned on, just about 5:25 this morning, and a gradual build. the fast track lane is filling in the fastest. back to you. >> we're awaiting a press conference this morning. south san francisco police were involved in an officer-involving. we had photographers there

overnight. pete suratos is there as well. they're setting up for everything now. we're going to drop back into that as soon as it happens. >> other news going on right now. dozens of united airlines passengers are finally in the bay area this morning. they landed after a scare on the tarmac in newark, new jersey. they had to evacuate their sfo bound plane after an engine fire that was noticed while they worrying. we're hearing from an injured passenger and finding out it was not a person on the plane who first noticed the fire. >> bob redell live at sfo with the new overnight developments for us. good morning, bob. >> good morning to, laura and sam. united flight 5079 finally arrived back here at sfo about five hours later than planned. we just spoke with a woman on the flight. she's from oakland. she was on that flight when one of the engines caught fire on the tarmac in newark. you can see she's nursing a sore ankle, which she twisted after the pilot ordered an emergency

evacuation of that airplane. >> people started shouting, fire, evacuate. then people were just running and jumping. and the stewardess was screaming. very traumatic. >> people starting grabbing their baggage. i'm like, okay, no. don't grab your baggage. get off the plane. so i stopped, i don't know, 10 or 15 people from reaching into the overhead bin and getting their big bags out of the overhead bin and all this stuff. >> the united flight attendants ployed the chutes to get all 124 passengers and seven crew members off the aircraft. only five minor injuries. newark liberty international was ti temporarily closed as a result. the pilot had just announced they were ready for takeoff when some passengers started to smell jet fuel. the pilots weren't aware until air traffic control alerted them

they saw flames coming out of their engines. >> got over 100 passengers standing on the taxiway. >> they were advised the right engine was on fire. they had no indication inside. right now, no visible fire. the heating gun to see if it's still hot. >> recall, flight 5079 was already experiencing a regular delay. one passenger wondered if the takeoff had been in time, would the engined have happened midflight. >> thank you very much, bob. >> 5:33. we mentioned at the top of the newscast, the press conference going on. we want to listen to the south san francisco police after an officer-involved shooting. >> the investigation is being conducted jointly with the south san francisco police department investigators, with the san mateo county district attorney's office. again, the scene is still very active. we're asking residents in the area with information to call

the south san francisco police department. main line or tip line, or they can call the san mateo county district attorney's office with any information that they might be able to provide to assist in the investigation. >> some kind of a? >> at this time, the reason for the call is still being investigated. and information is very vague at this time. [ inaudible question ] >> it's unknown how many officers fired at this time. there were several san francisco police officers on the scene at the the incident took place. it is believed that the resident did in fact live on the 3700 block of cork place. >> did he point the shotgun at the officers and fire? >> that's still being investigated at this time. it's unknown. >> were the officers wearing body cameras? >> it's unknown at this time if they were wearing body cameras. >> there are people who live on

the block, are they -- >> yes, the neighborhood is deemed safe at this time. there is no outstanding subjects that are connected with the incident. and it's still being investigated at this time. i do not know. >> this was obviously a rarity in south san francisco. have you talked about that? >> it is a rare incident. generally, this area up here is a good neighborhood. we don't typically respond to very many calls for service on this particular street. and it's a very unfortunate situation. >> do you know if the residents ca called was familiar with this person or knew them? >> i'm not sure. >> did the suspect make any threat to the resident who called or the officer? >> that's unknown at this time. >> we'll continue to monitor what is going on there. that's the sergeant reporting

from the south san francisco police department. what had happened is there was originally a 911 service call on the 3700 block of cork place, when officers arrived, they found a man, they say, in the roadway with a long gun. some sort of shotgun or what not. that is when we don't know if there was an altercation, what happened, but that man was shot and killed. officers said he did live at that residence there. the investigation continues, but they cleared the neighborhood at least, deemed for people there. >> we're still waiting to find out the reason specifically for why they were responding. you mentioned a disturbance with a firearm. that's all we know. we'll have much more throughout the show. >> we have pete out there, he's going to continue to monitor any latests. we'll bring them to you. >> the other story that's continuing to dominate our news coverage is the world reacting to the horrible tragedy from earlier this week. remembering the lives lost in manchester this morning. this is a look at that growing memorial in manchester where flowers have been placed,

candles are burning, all of this in honor of the 22 victims of monday night's attack. now breaking news in last hour and a half or so, manchester police announcing they have identified all of the victims. more work is needed before they can notify all the families. >> also three more men in connection to the suicide bombing at the ariana grande concert were arrested during raids. investigators say they're still trying to determine if the bomber worked alone in the meantime, british newspapers the guardian and sun are publishing photos allegedly of that suicide bomber, 22-year-old salman abedi. police say he's a manchester native of libyan descent and a u.s. intelligence official tells nbc news he received terrorist training abroad. officers raided abedi's home and detained his brothers although it's not clear if this brother is linked to the attack. for many, there reality of the attack is just sinking in. >> i feel sad for all the people who did die. >> i'm heart broke. >> it just doesn't feel real.

here. they do show the typical build, northbound 101 from 680 to oakland road. a smooth flow of traffic on the tracks and the water. b.a.r.t. did talk about a delay developing between fruitvale and lake marriott because of some issue. >> we're also closely tracking what's going on this weekend, as we are now just a few days away. >> and it's an extended weekend for a lot of people. >> must be nice to get vacation time. >> you may be planning on hitting the road or getting away. we're also going to have cooler temperatures, as we look at saturday's forecast, the coast will be 63 degrees. 68 degrees on the bay, and 74 inland. it's going to be perfect for those barbecues. or maybe if you want to have some swimming weather, you have to head farther south. up to 77 on sunday. for the inland areas, bay, 71, and 65 along the coast. starting out with some clouds.

and if you're planning to head to bottlerock this weekend in napa valley, it is going to be so perfect. 76 degrees on saturday. and sunday, a little warmer, up to 83 degrees with some sunshine. if you're going to be heading to the sierra, here's a look at kirkwood's forecast. there will be some rain for the weekend, starting on friday and then off and on on sunday, there may also be a slight chance of some thunderstorms, rather on saturday, we'll have that chance of some rain, and then clearing out on sunday with highs in the mid 60s. then on memorial day, the presidio parade will happen at 10:30 in the morning. fog starting out, but we may get the fog clearing just in time for the raid. on memorial day, our temperatures warming up to the mid 60s in san francisco. we'll take a look at the temperature trend for san jose coming up in three minutes. >> we'll look forward to that, thank you, kari. >> 6:40 right now. ing up, shutting down. the east bay school closing its

out with some cool temperatures, warming up quickly into the low 70s. 74 degrees for lunchtime, then as you get ready to head home from work, we'll have temperatures in the upper 70s. a nice afternoon to spend time outside, going to the park, and we'll have more weather like that heading into the long holiday weekend. that forecast is coming up at 5:49. >> and we're looking at the tri-valley, east bay, the travel times holding steady. we're talking 6, a little slower than we're used to at this time. i'll talk about why coming up. >> here's something you were covering for us earlier this morning. all new surprise overnight geyser could mean extended cleanup along a busy commuter stretch in the east bay. this took firefighters about two hours to shut that water down that was spewing from a sheared fire hydrant earlier this morning. this happened in concord on the port chicago highway. for a time, the water could be measured in inches. again, off now, but there may be

residual delays due to the cleanup. >> new this morning, despite objections from parents and students, the alameda school district has reportly voted to shut down in a matter of weeks. the school deemed seismically unsafe. lum elementary school could collapse in a catastrophic earthquake. parents hoped the school would delay the vote. last night, the chronicle reports they went ahead with the plan to close the campus at the end of the school year. roughly 500 students will have to transfer next to several other schools. >> quarter to 6:00 right now, the president met with the pope earlier today. >> and scott mcgrew, the two disagree on a lot of things. even thatt. >> that's right. the pope has not spoken specifically about the actual use budget, but he has said in the past he thinks one of the key economic principles, the president's attempt to balance the budget with, trickle down economics, is just morally wrong. the pope believes climate change

is a major threat. despite that, the two leaders did have a cordial meeting at the vatican. president trump also met with the italian president and he's on his way to brussels right now. at home, we learned a lot from the testimony of former cia director john brennan. we learned american intelligence knew the russians were meddling in our election far earlier than we in the public first thought. we learned the cia briefed the gang of eight, the four top senators, the four top members of the house in august of last year and told them the russians are trying to influence the election and the russians were in contact with americans involved in the trump campaign. there's something else that brennan said about the russian investigation that i thought was important. why do we care about this so much? why this goes beyond politics and finger pointing. the long statement, but it's an important one. take a look. for the last 241 years, this

and the tri-valley, a little warmer looking at pleasanton and the clouds overhead. 80 degrees. clearing out today, but the low 60s in san francisco. as rr looking out the window, it's cloudy, but it's not going to stay cloudy all day in the inland valleys. it is cool. you need a jacket stepping out, but later on, a day, again, for short sleeves as we warm up into the upper 70s. getting the kids ready for school, it is cloudy, foggy, temperatures in the 50s to start. there will be clearing at recess. some sunshine starting to peek out, and that will help warm up the temperatures and make it more comfortable at recess. by the time you go back to pick up the kids or they're dropped off by the school bus, it will be a very nice day and temperatures warming into the 70s. now, as you make plans for the weekend, carnaval happening this saturday and sunday. saturday, we'll see the temperatures in the upper 50s, reaching up to 65 degrees and the seven-day forecast keeps the

temperatures the same in san francisco. mostly sunny skies. also sunshine inland. and going from 80 today to the mid 70s by friday. and the weekend is looking nice, too. and mike, you're still updating a crash now in san ramon. >> i am, because there are very few crashes on the chp blotter. this one has been sticking around. not a lot of appreciable slowing. a big look at the bay, no surprises. just one incident sltands out. blocks the slow lane. there hasn't been slowing developing other than at the scene, so we'll track that for 680. a little farther south, we'll track the waze system. we started out slow. road crews cleared late from sunol here, so we still have that as the outstanding slowdown for this portion of your map. you might want to take it over to hayward where there's also slowing, but that adds about ten minutes. the purple route, that actually is a little faster than all the routes, even though you're going through the slower. you can check your routes and decide on your options as you look at your phone, i hope is

injured this morning after an apparent tornado touched down in central north carolina and all of this was caught on camera. >> tornado coming right through. right now. >> you can hear kind of the description there. video showing the funnel cloud tossing debris and ripping branches right off trees in autriville, just outside of fayetteville, north carolina. a fire department was damaged, some of the homes torn apart. the storm also took out trees and power lines blocking roads and causing power outages. all right, truly some terrifying mope nlments caught on camera a truck driver's brakes fail, sending him speeding down a highway in mexico. police officers shot this video as they were following the truck for six miles. it reached speeds over 90 miles before crossing over multiple
