the way that i did. and for that i'm sorry. >> and you're forgiven! >> a contrite greg gianforte offering a public apology. >> i should not have treated that reporter if that way and for that i'm sorry, mr. ben jacobs. >> the hotly contested campaign blew up late wednesday when a reporter's question to gianforte about the house health care bill landed the reporter in the hospital and the candidate in political hot water. >> he immediately got very defensive. i just tried to follow up one more time and next thing i knew i went from being vertical to horizontal. >> the last time you came in here you did the same thing. get the hell out of here? >> he offered a different version saying it is unfortunate this aggressive behavior from a

liberal journalist created this scene. after the sheriff charged gianforte with misdemeanor assault, paul ryan said the congressman should apologize. >> i do not think this is acceptable behavior, but it will be judged by the people of montana. . in the end his supporters rallied behind him. his campaign taking in $100,000 the day after the incident. >> reporter: the earliest he could take his seat is june 6th. but matt and savannah, he's got some business to take care of here in montana first. he has to appear before a judge on that assault charge by june 7th. >> all right. thank you very much. >> that montana election is win for the white house, but this morning there is fresh turmoil facing the trump administration as nbc news is first to report the president's son-in-law and senior advisor jared kushner is now coming under fbi scrutiny in the russia investigation.

we will start our investigation of that. peter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. jared kushner may be the closest advisor to the president, making him one of the most powerful people in this country and now multiple u.s. officials sell nbc news that the fbi is taking a closer look at kushner in this russia inquiry. that means this reaches now right next to the president. this morning the fbi's russia probe is expanding into the west wing. jared kushner now under fbi scrutiny. multiple u.s. officials tell fbi news that they believe kushner has significant information relative to their russia inquiry. he's the only current fbi official known to be under skrooutny in the probe. the fbi is investigating whether they coordinated with russia to win the 2016 election. but it is unclear precisely what about kushner's activities has

drawn the fbi's activities. he met once with serg guy kislyak. he held a separate meeting last year with a russian banker. he heads a government owned development bank that's been under u.s. sanctions since 2016. though investigators are taking a closer look at kushner, it does not mean they suspect him of a crime or intend to charge him. in a statement, kushner's attorney tells nbc news, mr. kushner previously volunteered to share with congress what he knows about these meetings. he will do the same if he's contacted in connection with any other inquiry. >> jared is a very successful man from new york. >> kushner ease position is advisor and son-in-law putting the probe inside the white house and inside the president's family circle. >> i spoke to several white house officials overnight. whiegt now the white house is not commenting but redirecting us to the statement from kushner's lawyer. kushner is not a target of the investigation. he had not been accused of any wrongdoing.

for now he is in a different category than paul manafort and michael flynn who became national security advisor before being ousted. both men are considered subjects of the investigation. matt and savannah. >> all right. peter alexander thank you. chief legal correspondent, ari good morning to you. to your trained legal ear you hear the subject of an investigation. to say someone is under scrutiny is kind of a vague term. what does it mean? what doesn't it mean? >> it can be vague. it doesn't mean authorities want to charge this person. it does mean they believe this person has significant information about the issues under inquiry. >> and as we have heard, he's also volunteered to talk to congress about anything he knows. apparently he will do the same with the fbi. but if you're jared kushner how does finding out about this change your day-to-day life and if you are the president and he is your trusted advisor, how does it impact your daily interactions with him? >> it's not good for the white house because they have

repeatedly said that there is no their there. the president challenging the entire legitimacy of this inquirely. this is an independent group of investigators. the fbi saying there's something they want to talk to him about. his lawyer put out a statement saying they haven't been contacted yet. but day-to-day he has to think carefully about his role and anything involving russia. >> and can the president share any information with him during this period or does he have to be careful? >> well, they are both at least witnesses and maybe more to a whole set of potential activities, whether that includes diplomacy, which is perfectly legal or questions around current or former aids did anything financially questionable or otherwise. so i do think they have to be extra careful. they have to keep running the country at the same time. ultimately, this is a white house that has tried to sweep this under the rug. this news suggests this news is alive. >> thank you very much. >> all right. as for the president, he's on the final leg of his first overseas trip.

it is the g-7 summit in sicily. he enters it fresh off some fresh confrontations at a nato meeting with some of the very same leaders he's facing today. nbc's white house correspondent traveling with the president. >> reporter: this morning president trump in diplomatic damage control as the g-7 summit gets underway, the president still facing fall-out from thursday's nato summit. this morning german magazine reporting the president sharply criticized germany in a meeting with european union officials, lashing out saying the germans are bad, very bad. look at the millions of cars they are selling in the u.s. terrible, according to participants there. this morning president trump standing next to the german leader during the group photo as the white house weighed in, not confirming the language cited in the report but acknowledging to nbc news the president voiced his frustration that germany is taking advantage of the u.s. the president of the european union commission saying the story isn't true and president

trump ignoring a shouted question about it. but it wasn't just those sharp words. the president's actions were also on center stage. a long handshake with the newly elected french president and then this. the push seen around the world. when president trump seemed to muscle nato's newest member. saying the president was merely moving to his assigned spot. mr. trump also raised eyebrows by scolding his fellow nato leaders. only 5 of the 28 meet their required financial commitments, making the u.s. pay more. >> this is not fair to the people and taxpayers of the united states. >> reporter: and the president's top economic advisor stressing this morning the president doesn't have a problem with germany, but rather how the country has handled trade. trade will be at the top of the agenda today, as well as defense and climate with the president weighing whether to pull out of

and the fears here still very real. it's an unrelenting man hunt, a race to stop another attack. more raids this morning. one more arrest. and for the first time in britain, armed police patrolling trains ahead of a holiday weekend. the threat level at its highest. hospitals warned to prepare for another attack. . the bomber is dead. this, the first video of the killer filmed by neighbors outside his home. but he had accomplices and enough chemicals to make more bombs. his victims have all now been identified. so many, so young, so many dreams that died in an instant. 15-year-old megan hurley, the last to be named. and this was a biker's memorial for their hometown girl who gefr made it home. her mother overcome by tiers,

little different at security. typically you take out of your bag your computer and that's it. but in these ten cities they have added some issues that will make it that much slower. if you have books, you need to take your summer reads out and take those out. let's say you have some food in there. well, turns out, you need to take your food out as well. so in other words, you're basically emptying your bag. when you add that up from person to person, you see there is going to be a delay. you can look on line at tsa dot gov and see how long the lines are going to be. but always get to the airport early on a busy travel day. you can see right now there are 113 delays. 24 cancellations. so already we are starting out on a day that looks like it will be frustrating for many travelers. >> is that fabio on the cover of your summer book there? just curious. >> reporter: i know who wrote this book. this is my wife's book.

>> he's doing young adult reading as well. thank you so much. let's go to orlando, where the holiday weekend as a popular destination, universal studios. >> reporter: usually i'm the one sitting in traffic, so this year i got to come to orlando, florida and talk amusement parks because this is one of the top destinations this memorial day weekend. you have a lot of theme parks opening up taking advantage of the crowds. they have opened up volcano bay, a 30-acre theme park i have been enjoying. disney world will open up a collaboration with james cameron to bring the world of avatar to life. six flags tends today bu their attractions this time of the year, too, because they are taking advantage of the crowds. get here early and try to get on some of those rides before the crowds get too big.

final after a thrilling double-overtime win over ottawa. that was 3-2. game seven double-overtime. the penguins will face the nashville predators. game one monday night. you can watch it right here on nbc. >> good stuff. also this morning, there is outrage in florida, after a man was caught on camera, unplugging a bounce house during a birthday party. and children were playing inside at the time. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in port st. lucie this morning. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. police investigating the incident. the suspect could be charged with trespassing. it was bizarre enough when parents noticed the bounce house beginning to deflate with children trapped inside. and they looked at the security video and got quite a shock. you can see the kids playing in the bounce house, when all of a sudden, with no warning, it starts losing air. just 20 seconds later, it collapses. about ten kids, some as young as 2 and 3 years old, trapped

inside. the birthday party turning into panic. >> chaos. >> reporter: glen hunt is the godfather of the birthday girl, 1-year-old diana. >> some of the kids were crying. one was traumatized by the incident. another one, when he was being removed, his leg got a little injured. >> reporter: what has people up in arms is this, a fan seen walking to the backyard, unplugging the bounce house before nonchalantly walking back across the street. there was also a deejay and music at the party. >> he believes he was pulling the plug to the deejay booth. but it pulled the plug to the bounce house. >> reporter: police know who the man in the red shirt is. they tried to question him but he was uncooperative. his wife sauce he has hired a lawyer and has declined to comment. >> that's irresponsible for somebody to do that. >> reporter: from florida to south carolina, to colorado, kids have been accidentally injured in bounce houses before,

when they blew away. this morning, this florida community is puzzled as to why someone would pull the plug. and on social media, anger. it could have killed the kids, one person wrote. another, people should get public shaming for this. >> i was appalled. i was absolutely appalled that somebody would have the nerve. don't take matters into your own hands and cause harm to other individuals, especially children. >> reporter: again, police here in port st. lucie say the suspect could be charged with trespassing. investigators don't think he was trying to harm the kids. he may have been frustrated he couldn't get the deejay's attention. investigators are trying to speak with his attorney to get his side of the story. guys, back to you. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you. let's go to mr. roker for a check of the friday weather. >> we have severe weather to talk about that is firing up in the mid plains. it goes into saturday. things right now not so bad. and we have a risk of strong

storms from cheyenne to dodge city. large cells, damaging winds and tornadoes. we move into saturday. it expands out. we have enhanced risk northeast of dallas. all the way to paducah, st. louis, little rock, memphis. 51 million people at risk. the greatest risk, missouri to texas for tornadoes. on sunday, cincinnati all the way down to del rio, texas. strong storms. the main problem is going to be damaging winds, large hail. but we can't rule out isolated tornadoes, as well. i'm vianey arana. it's 7:35. you're going to notice dark skies. 50 degrees for the peninsula, south bay at 58. in the tri-valley, also in the 50s. we're expected to keep the overcast skies through the midmorning and then the temperature trend is showing a very nice warmup into the 60s and 70s for san jose with clearing skies by the afternoon for san francisco as well.

capacity passenger loads and we have minimum flight attendant staffing. and people are crammed into smaller spaces. and people are stressed. >> they're stressed from the time you get in your car, face traffic, to going through tsa. when you finally get on that plane and you're going to go for three hours with nothing, this is where it gets released a lot of times. >> raise your hand if you feel tension in the skies, in planes when you're onboard planes right now? raise your hand if you feel it. >> i experience it every trip at least once. >> every trip at least once? >> yeah. >> what's the worst you've seen on a plane, in terms of people behaving badly? >> i had a passenger. the lavatory was occupied. and he did not want to wait. and he urinated right in front of the bathroom by the cockpit. and that's pretty much unacceptable. and -- >> pretty much unacceptable. that's unacceptable. yeah.

and how do you handle it? >> obviously, i had to report that to the captain. >> raise your hand if you've been verbally abused by a passenger. really? >> yes. >> in what way, tim? >> i think alcohol does play into this a lot. the same alcohol that you're drinking on the ground is very different when the cabin is closed and you're at 8,000 feet. it affects you differently. most people don't recognize how alcohol does affect them. >> they get drunker. >> drunker. >> faster. >> would you like to see them stop serving alcohol on flights? >> no. i think that's a bit extreme. we're specifically trained to assess the situation. and we use specific parameters, if someone is appearing to be intoxicated, we may not serve them a full drink. >> what percentage of incidents occur on a plane do you think have some basis in alcohol consumption? >> i think that's the leading -- >> probably 80%.

>> 80%? everybody walks on the plane with a cell phone. on all those cell phones there's a camera. and so now, everything you do and everything the other passengers do, somebody can hold that cell phone up and capture. is it a good thing or a bad thing? >> creating a situation that almost creates an operational situation between the passenger filming and the crew when there doesn't need to be one. >> i want to play videos for you and tell me what the immediate reaction was the first time you saw this video. okay? >> this is wrong. oh, my god. look what you did to him. >> so, that video went viral worldwide. the first time you saw it, what did you think? >> i was shocked. >> shocked? why? >> it shouldn't have happened. it shouldn't have gone that far. >> it's unacceptable. and i think the industry has learned from that. >> you know that the people around the world who watch that video said, that's proof.

president said the germans are bad, very bad. gary cohn, the president's top economic adviser is saying the president was talking about trade. saying he doesn't have a problem with germany. he has a problem with the nation's trade policies. back home, meanwhile, it's a different top aide in the spotlight. jared kushner, the president's son-in-law. multiple u.s. officials tell nbc news investigators believe kushner has significant information relevant to their russia inquiry. the only current white house official now known to be under absoluteny in that fbi investigation. while authorities are looking at kushner this doesn't mean they suspect him of a crime or intend to charge him. in a statement, kushner's attorney tells nbc news, mr. kushner volunteered to share with congress what he knows about these meetings. he will do the same if he is contacted in connection with any other inquiry. here in sicily today at the g7 economic summit expect lots of talk on trade and expect the president to face some pressure from the other leaders here to stay in that landmark paris climate agreement. >> hallie, thank you very much.

we're back with 8:11. got a story that's stirring controversy. a high school senior that's barred from her own graduation ceremony because she is pregnant. >> this morning, she is speaking out. kristen dahlgren is here with that story. >> reporter: as you can imagine, maddie wrunkeles was looking forward to walking in her high school graduation. now, her school says she's not welcome. the 18-year-old is speaking out, trying to stop what she calls unfair shaming. by all accounts, maddie runkles is a good student. she got into college, has a 4 h.0 average and a growing baby bump. and because of that, her private vision in hagerstown, maryland, says she won't be joining her 14

classmates when they get their diplomas next week. >> that's something i worked hard for. graduation is a very big deal. and i'm the only one not there to celebrate with my friends. >> reporter: maddie says it was a difficult decision to keep the baby and tell the school she was pregnant. >> my principal said he wanted to hold an assembly to tell people what happened. i said i would prefer i could speak to them and have it come from me rather than him. >> reporter: in a statement to nbc, principal david hobbs says the school is now being bullied. quote, please tell america that we are not disciplining maddie because she chose to keep her baby boy. for that, we commend her. >> the issue here is a standard of oabstinence. >> reporter: students are asked to read a pledge. part of the pledge reads, this is protecting my body by

abstaining from sexual immorality. did you sign that? >> yes. all those that signed the pledge, those are things they've done and they will be at graduation, too. >> the school is afraid what this looks like, they have a pregnant student. >> reporter: but heritage insists banning maddie from graduation is in her best interest. >> for her to be exposed to that kind of a public scenario would be uncomfortable for her. >> it's hard not to think of them as hypocrites because they promote life so much. but then when you make the right choice and choose life, they don't want to do anything with you. >> now, maddie says she's gone public to stand up for other students in her situation. she says that's a lesson she wants to pass on to her son. her parents are hosting an alternate graduation for maddie next week. guys? >> we put all these stories up on our website. i would imagine that one is going to generate a lot of comments over the weekend. >> absolutely. >> thank you very much.

i )m ... ==topvo== gilroy police are done clearing a home officers good friday morning at 9:26. i'm sam brock. gilroy police are now done clearing a home that officers had surrounded earlier this morning. we brought you this as breaking news all throughout today in the bay. this happened on irvin court only a few miles away from the gilroy premium outlets. police said it followed an early morning shooting during a car burglary nearby. in that case the victim actually interrupted the burglary in process and was shot as a result, suffering non-life threatening injuries. officers made two arrests there. a third arrest was made at the scene of the burglary. fans right now of all kinds of music converging today in the north bay for three days of some serious tunes.

the napa bottle rock music festival begins a few hours from now. the head liners for tonight, maroon 5 and mclamore, tomorrow tom petty and the heartbreakers and sunday foo fighters closing it out. the bay area reaching a signature landmark tomorrow. 80 years a the golden gate bridge opened with certain events. to celebrate there will will be a celebration. however, there will be closures around the golden gate bridge. we'll be back with your weather and traffic.
