armed services. a day to remember the ultimate sacrifice made by the men and women of the armed services, as we take a live look at arlington national cemetery in d.c. you see the flags in front of the gravestones there. later today, we'll be covering the wreath laying ceremony and remarks from the president. good morning on this memorial day monday. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. we want to get to breaking news off the top. a deadly crash on 580 that is blocking lanes. let's go to vianey arana. >> it appears this logged in overnight. chp put this in at about 2:27 around eastbound 580 near 1st street involving four vehicles.

four out of five lanes are blocked. it appears one of those cars might have been on fire. even at this early morning hour, there's still plenty of backup and we're hoping this clears out. it's a sad situation. right now, it appears four out of five lanes are blocked. no estimated time as to when the rest of the lanes will open. kari, over to you. >> we're also tracking some fog this morning as we get ready to head out across part of the bay area. cloudy in the south bay. it's 57 degrees. in the tri-valley, 53 degrees. we haven't seen any of the low clouds there. the east bay, oracle arena, 55 degrees in oakland. 52 in the north bay with temperatures today just a touch warmer than yesterday. especially in spots like the tri-valley and also for the north bay where we will be heading up to the upper 70s, but some mid 60s for san francisco. so i'll talk more about that. a look ahead to the forecast coming up. back to you, kris and sam.

>> police in the north bay are investigating a shooting that sent two people to the hospital. santa rosa police say both victims were shot just before 10:00 last night in what is considering a gang related attack. the victims were walking on a bike path near martin luther king jr. park. one victim was found on grand avenue. the other was found on a different avenue. both are in serious condition this morning. >> san jose police will continue investigating their fourth officer-involved shooting this month alone. >> this latest encounter happened early sunday morning with a man who refused to put down an ax. tom jenson has more on why the police chief said the officers had no other choice but to open fire. >> san jose pd got the call at about 12:35. security at the donner loft apartment said there was a loud disturbance. hector gutierrez waw asleep in a unit just down the hall with his dog by his side when he heard gunshots at 1:00 in the morning.

>> yes, i did. my dog woke me up. i heard a pop pop. >> san jose police chief eddy garcia said he couldn't say how many shots were fired, but the officer was left with no choice but to fire his gun. something he'll have to live with. >> this is tragic for the suspect and the suspect's family, but what often gets lost is the impact on the officers. >> all of his officers go through crisis intervention training and while all six shootings by his officers involve mentally ill suspects, there are hundreds more cases where the incidentsent peacefully. peace is one thing tenant nick moore says he doesn't get at the apartments anymore. he says police sirens outside the subsidized housing have become nightly white noise like sleeping in a war zone. >> unfortunately, there's gunsapphire all the time. it was like another night. >> now, in san francisco, police

are still investigating a deadly shooting there that happened just after midnight sunday morning. happened on mission street near maynard street. when they arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound and another man with a gun. that man was arrested. the man who was shot died at the scene. neither the victim nor the suspect have been publicly identified. 4:34 right now on your monday. a man facing battery charges after authorities say he bunched a b.a.r.t. train operator over the weekend. happened on saturday night around 6:30 at the pittsburg bay point station. no word on what led up to that behavior. >> bizarre allegations of racism reported at one south bay high school. los gatos high school leaders are reportedly investigating two recent prom invitations with racist overtones. in one, a female student of color was asked to the prom by a male student wearing black face makeup. the chronicle reports the other involved an invitation and a

racist poster. both incidents were reported first by the school newspaper, high school administrators released a statement to the newspaper saying this behavior will not be tolerated. >> first, a conviction, now the sentencing. tomorrow, closing arguments are set to continue in the penalty phase of the sierra lamar murder case. jurors convicted antolin garcia torres for first degree murder with an enhancement of kidnapping making him eligible for capital punishment. this week, the jury could be announcing his sentence. last week, the defense delivered its closing arguments and prosecutors will get their chance on tuesday. in the meantime, jurors are going to continue their deliberations in the trial of three santa clara county jail guards accused of beating an inmate to death. prosecutors say the 2015 death of michael tyree was, quote, an abuse of power by the deputies. the defense is questioning a lot of evidence in the case.

the guards face life in prison if they're convicted. >> more problems at the benicia valero refinery. black smoke went up in the air. video of the flaring on may 5th is what we have here. that's when a power outage triggered so much flaring and smoke that people had to evacuate. there were no evacuations for this weekend's incident. spokespersons there say the smoke release was part of the process of getting the refinery's operations back to normal. some very scary moments this weekend around the bay, as a kite surfer and an instructor on a jet ski had to be rescued by the u.s. coast guard. that all happening near oyster point marina saturday night. neither was wearing a life jacket at the time, but they were able to grab on do a buoy where they were eventually rescued. >> today, america honored military members who made the ultimate sacrifice and did not come home. there are memorial day events taking place all around the bay area. >> let's get a few on the screen

welcome back. 4:40 on your memorial monday. investigators say a domestic dispute is what triggered a shooting rampage at three different homes in mississippi. eight people are dead. that includes a sheriff's deputy. investigators say the shootings happened early sunday monning and it all started when the gunman and his estranged wife got into an argument about their children and he opened fire with a deputy arrived. the 35-year-old has been arrested. a reporter captured him on camera after the arrest confessing to the killings and saying that he wanted to die. >> suicide by cop was my intention. i am not fit to live, not after what i have done. not in your eyes and nobody

else's eyes, but god, you know. >> he is facing capital murder and first degree murder charges. today is the last of three straight days of vta light rail station closures. this is a stretch of eight stations closed for rail construction work. buses are being used to cover the stations instead, but we know that takes just a little longer. vta recommends checking ahead if you plan to use light rail today. maybe building in a little extra time. >> a lot of people off work or school today. probably going to be outside enjoying the weather. kari hall is joining us to give us a check of what's going on. >> we start out with cloudy skies, looking live at san jose. the temperature trend for los gatos, in the low 60s to start out. reaching into the mid 70s today. very comfortable for barbecuing or spending extra time outside. i'll talk more about what to expect and some of the ceremonies going on today coming up next. >> the majority of the bay area

live look outside right now. some headlights out there on the highway in san jose. much lighter traffic conditions of course on this holiday monday. but some people still going to work. welcome to today in the bay. >> this is a different kind of lights. the northern lights dancing across the night sky above bismarck, north dakota, this weekend. spectators were greeted with beautiful shades of blue and green early sunday morning. this photographer captured 500 pictures in order to create this ten-second time lapse. talk about being ready at the right moment. >> wow. i'm excited he gathered the pictures to put it together. hours and hours. >> i would love to see those. >> it normally doesn't come down that low, down to north dakota. that was definitely rare viewing opportunity they had there.

>> i would be like, where's my camera? >> they probably knew in advance, and the clear skies, wow. and we have had a hard time finding clear skies around here, especially starting out day. take look at this live view of san francisco. you can see the low clouds there. that's been pretty much what we have seen all throughout the past several mornings, and even into the afternoon. temperature wise, we're in the lower 50s. and now 55 degrees in oakland. 54 degrees in palo alto and san jose starts out this morning at 54. rather 57 degrees there in napa at 55 degrees. if you're planning to head out to some of the ceremonies going on today, we have one at the presidio, and it will be cloudy with temperatures holding steady in the low to mid 50s at the time of the start of the parade at 10:30. then a little bit of sunshine by noontime, it will be 56 degrees. and it really won't be that warm, so make sure you're wearing long sleeves there. our temperatures in the south bay will be another comfortable day, just a little warmer than

it was yesterday, reaching 75 in east san jose. for the east bay, up to 76 degrees in danville, antioch up to 80 degrees, and 58 degrees at half moon bay. on the other side of the hills in belmont, 67 degrees. and 62 degrees on the embarcadero. it will be up to 76 degrees today in sonoma. it will be beautiful as you're looking out the window in san jose, getting ready for the day. it will be one for long sleeves, especially starting out, but maybe you have to get shade from all the sunshine we'll see later on this afternoon. and i have been really struggling with my allergies, and maybe allergic to some juniper, olive, and pine. tree pollen is moderate, so it has been coming down. we're seeing a little grass, mold, and weed pollen as well. we're still going to have more weather to enjoy over the next several days. in san francisco, temperatures staying in the mid to upper 60s by the end of the week. low 70s this weekend as you

start to make some plans. inland areas, mid 70s today. then a slow warmup as we go toward the end of the week, this weekend is looking pretty warm. definitely warmer than the weekend we just had. and vianey, you're still tracking what's happening now in the tri-valley. >> unfortunately. typically, memorial day weekend, we like to start off monday with slower traffic, but this is video of an overnight crash. chp logged this crash at 2:27, and by 2:51, they did issue a sig alert. it is a deadly crash involving four vehicles. it appears one of the cars may have been on fire. we're still seeing one out of five lanes blocked. four lanes out of five blocked as of now at this hour, still seeing the crews on scene, working to clean that up. it is memorial day so we'll see a lighter commute, but even right now at this hour on our traffic maps. we're still showing slowing near the area. it has cleared up, it was red earlier, and then over the past ten minutes, it went from yellow

to green. it could be possible that while we're not seeing as many vehicles and hopefully they work to clear the scene, but definitely a sad way to start off this memorial day and we hope everybody stays safe on the roads. we'll keep a close eye on how everything is looking. >> thank you very much. >> on this memorial day weekend, a story about the contribution of a remarkable family. >> among the graduates this weekend from the u.s. military academy at west point, three brothers, a rare accomplishment that hasn't been seen there in decades. maya rooesz was there. >> it's graduation time at america's oldest military academy. west point class of 2017 preparing to leave school to serve their country as army officers. among the new second lieutenants, the three brothers 23-year-old noah and 21-year-old fraternal twins cole and summoner, all graduating together. >> after high school, we'll all

go do our own thing, whatever that will be. >> but that's not how it turned out. each brother deciding on his own to apply to and attend west point. surprising their nonmilitary older brother and their mom and dad. both of whom served in the coast guard. >> it was their decision to go there, not pressure from us. i'm proud as heck that they are. >> honored and we're tickled. >> it's also a rarity. the last time three siblings graduated from west point at the same time, more than 30 years ago. >> they made it through the 47-month crucible. i think everyone has realized just how special that is, and it really does not happen very often. >> for these brothers -- >> friday night pizza night. that's our thing. >> that meant relying on each other through the grueling years here. >> we all go through our individual trials like every cadet does here, but it's nice when we get some down time, i can reach out to them. >> now, the trio prepares for

scientists are going very small to find the answer. the golden gate bridge as you may not have seen it before. but first, happening right now, hollister police are investigating a deadly shooting. this happened just before 7:00 last night. the victim in this case rushed to the hospital where he was ultimately declared dead. plus, homeland security secretary john kelly said he's still considering whether to ban laptop computers from the cabins of all international computers. there's a ban that applies to flights from eight muslim majority countries. passengers under that rule are banned from bringingby devices larger than a smartphone. we're back with more news in two minutes.

it is 4:54, and it is memorial day monday. we're looking live at arlington national cemetery this morning. as you prepare to perhaps spend the day with friends and family, let us not forget the reason for the day, for all the service men and women who did not come home. 4:55 right now. and happening at the moment, firefighters continuing to battle these flames in los angeles. this is a fire that erupted in mandville cannial yesterday afternoon. it has charged more than 50 acres so far and counting. at last check, that fire was about 70% contained. >> golden gate bridge engineers are reportedly thinking small when it comes to the latest phase of a long-term upgrade. engineers plan to build a small scale model of the bridge to insure planned seismic upgrades for the center span holds up in high winds. engineers want to make sure the changes don't lead to any

catastrophic failure most dramatically seen when it tacoma narrows bridge collapsed in the 1940s. bridge district leaders say every measure is being taken to prevent that catastrophic failure. >> new accusations uc leaders are facing this morning about lavish spending. they have accumulated a $225,000 tab on dinner parties since 2012. uc president janet napolitano typically reimpurses them for the parties. regents in january spent more than $17,000 on a banquet the night before they voted to raise student fees. a look now at oracle where in just a matter of days, the warriors will be back competing for the nba title. the ws will take on the cavaliers for the third straight year on thursday. the series already making nba history, though. the warriors and cavs are the first teams to face off for the nba title three times in a row. and the warriors come in

>> and i'm sam brock. this is a situation we have been following here for the last couple hours. vianey arana in for mike this morning. it's counter commute but still very problematic for drivers. >> definitely, and a very sad situation. this happened overnight, and chp did report this at about 2:27, 2 kwlk 28, and we did get the sig alert issued at about 2:51. it's been in effect for the last two hours. on scene at the area earlier. right now, we are still seeing the four left lanes blocked. four out of five left lanes blocked. right now, they haven't given us an estimated time of it being opened. it appears four vehicles were involved. one did catch on fire. we aren't seeing any major delays at this hour, but definitely very tough. i'll send things back to you. >> thank you very much. and now let's check in with kari. >> certain parts of the bay area dealing with fog as you get ready to head out. also, cloudy skies with mild temperatures. here's a live look outside at n
