going to be bright and sunny with very mildtures. even a little warmer than it was yesterday. so let's take a live look outside at downtown san jose. you can see it's cloudy to start out, but it won't be like that all throughout the afternoon. right now, the temperatures are in the low to mid 50s all around the bay area with highs today starting to spread out. we'll stay in the upper 50s along the coast in spots like half moon bay where we won't get much clearing. then look at concord, up to 81 degrees today with some sunshine. we'll continue to see our temperatures warming up as we go through the weekend. i'll have a look add that. it's coming up in about five minutes, and vianey is tracking how it looks as you head out on the roadways. >> it looks clear here. i bow we have a lot of clouds in the sky, but the roads, not so much. we're not seeing too much congestion areas. look at the traffic sensors. green means go and we're see aglot of it early on this morning. we were seeing some slowing in the south bay. still seeing a little slowing right near northbound 280 in the south bay, but it looks like that was just a fender bender that has been cleared out.

it's not causing any major backup. westbound 80 towards the bay bridge, 7 minutes. westbound 92 to san mateo bridge, 13. noering lights and a feeling they might be turning them on a lot later today. back toia. >> if a all. >> sleeping in. thank you very much. breaking news in solano county. vacaville police are investigating a deadly shooting involving officers. the incident also left one officer injured. it happened early this morning on nut tree road right near orange drive. if that sounds familiar, that's the exit right off 80 that puts you across the street from the outlets. police say that officers exchanged gunfire before shooting and killing the gunman. there's no word right now on what kind of injuries the officer suffered, but we do know that those injuries are not believed to be life threatening. >> 6:02 now. new this morning, cheap officers are investigating this deadly early morning crash in the east bay. it happened on eastbound interstate 580 just west of first street in livermore.

the crash was first reported around 2:30 this morning. at least three cars were involved. one of the cars caught fire. four of the five lanes were closed temporarily but did reopen within the last hour. all right, a scare right out of the gates here. happening today, investigators are going to be at the new wave water park in dublin after a terrifying incident that happened over the weekend. >> a 10-year-old boy was sent flying off a water slide. he skidded across the concrete, flopped like a rag doll. would you believe he walked away okay? today in the bay's bob redell is live at the water park this morning with what investigators will lee looking into today and how something like this could happen, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, kris and sam. that slide in question is right behind me. you can see it, that large green three-story drop. it's called the emerald plunge. today, it, along with the slide next to it and a third slide, are shut down here at the wave new water park here in dublin.

after that 10-year-old boy got shot out of the emerald plunge early saturday afternoon. you can see what happened in this video. the boy got spit off the slide in a so-called run-out at the bottom which is designed to slow down riders after a three-story plunge. he landed on the concrete about two feet below the slide's edge. we spoke with dublin's assistant city manager who said the lifeguards did immediately provide the boy with first aid. >> out of an abundance of caution, his parents decided to take him to be further examined. i think they did that and he was released and is at home recovering. >> the city of dublin, which owns and operates this water park, says it extensively tested all of its slides before saturday's grand opening. calosha had permitted the emerald plunge on friday, the day before. now inspectors with that agency are expected out here some time this week. the manufacturer of this slide which this slide is supposed to meet with the city today to

figure out what caused the boy to get launched off the slide. the city shut down the slide next door to be on the safe side. the third slide, that was shut down because of a faulty water gauge. reporting live here in dublin, bob redell today in the bay. >> we'll be watching that one for sure. a lot of us with kids. thanks, bob. nuthis morning, a home intruder is in custody after deputies say the elderly couple that lived in a home fought back and restrained that intruder until authorities arrived. follow this one here. the mercury news reports this happened late last night at a home on mckie road near east side drive. the intruder came around the back of the home and struck the woman homeowner with a stick. the male homeowner jumped in. their struggle then carried them to the front of the home where deputy husband just arrived. deputies say the intruder will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon, attempted burglary, and also elder abuse. >> that's one brave couple there. >> 6:05. remembering the victims from

last week's deadly terror attack in manchester. last night, hundreds of people turning out for a vigil for one of the people killed in the suicide bombing. a sheof respect for a man many family members and friends called inspirational. 29-year-old martin, his mother spoke adoringly about her son and said he would have loved this tribute. >> he was a legend. he was a pain in the butt sometimes. he was passionate and full of life. anybody who knows him i'm sure will agree. >> so far, 16 people have been arrested in connection to the terror attack. two of those have been released. 14 others right now still being questioned. 22 people died and dozens were injured in this attack. >> it is 6:06, and developing this morning, north korea reportedly launched another missile for the second time in two days. u.s. military officials tell nbc news that it appears that north korea fired a short-range ballistic missile.

it flew for nearly six minutes before then landing in the sea of japan. the latest test prompted south korea's president to call a security meeting. >> a fleet week demonstration that turned tragic in new jersey this weekend after a navy parachutist plunged into the water near liberty state park during a routine demonstration. it was supposed to be a highlight of new york's fleet week. the elite navy s.e.a.l. parachute team descending in formation near the statue of liberty, but one of the s.e.a.l.'s chutes failed to open properly. >> i ask for all of your prayers for the navy s.e.a.l. community who lost a patriot today. >> an investigation has been launched to find out what went wrong. the coast guard called off the search for a man who jumped off his boat near the antioch bridge this weekend to not surface again. the 55-year-old man went into the water saturday and hasn't been seen since. sunday's effort to recover his body focused on the east side of the bridge. the sacramento sheriff's

department the man jumped off an anchored boat in order to get his hat but then never came back up. that accident happened on the same weekend law enforcement agencies teamed up for a boating safety operation. >> you need to ask lots of questions at the marina where you put in. local knowledge, that sort of stuff. you need to have spent some time before you get on the water to look at a chart to determine where the sand bars are. you need to know if you break down who do you call. >> the sheriff's department also says they are watching for drunk boaters this weekend. a live look right now at the crosses of lafayette this morning on this memorial day. just one place where you can go and visit and honor our veterans and our service members on this memorial day. also today, the presidio trust in san francisco is holding its annual memorial ceremony. this year will mark the 149th commemoration. thousands of people are expected to attend the honor.

the american killed, of course, while serving the united states armed forces. today's event starts at 10:30 this morning. >> cal fire is reminding everyone who plans to enjoy the outdoors to be aware of fire danger. right now, generally speaking, fire alert levels are relatively low and conditions today will be mild, but because the region is emerging from the drought, there are a lot of areas that are still very dry and risky. cal fire urges everyone to use caution when using fire in wild land areas and also check for local fire restrictions. >> 6:09 now, with cloudy skies. if you're on your way out to the memorial day ceremony at the presidio, going to be cloudy, might still be misting in the next couple hours. then a little sunshine as we go into the noon hour. 57 degrees there. it does stay school cool, and heading over to livermore for the wings of freedom tour, now 53 degrees, but it will make it up to 75 today. we can see the temperature trend

as it warms up. fairly quickly, 64 degrees at noon. then some low to mid 70s by 4:00 this afternoon. coming up in four minutes, i'll have a look at the temperature trend for santa clara, as we head over to vienna now. looking pretty light on the roads this morning. >> it has. even though it's monday, i hope the light commute makes it not so tough. we're seeing the speed sensors clearing out nicely. not expecting to see too much slowing in the next couple hours. we'll probably see the traffic picking up. now south bay drive times now, northbound 101 to 87, 13 minutes. northbound 87 to highway 101, about ten minutes. that's definitely holiday light traffic for you. >> thank you very much, vianey. >> taking a prom posal too far. coming up, the act of vandalism in one of california's largest national parks. and here's a look at some of the memorial day celebrations happening all across the bay area today.

it's almost 6:14 with cloudy skies. maybe you have the day off. we can see there's not a lot of people out as we take a live look outside at san jose. also some cloudy skies overhead. and the temperature trend for santa clara, it will be cooler than average. we should up to 76. we'll make it to 70 degrees by 3:00 this afternoon. looking at warmer temperatures in the forecast. more on that coming up in about five minutes. >> and chp isn't reporting any major delays at this hour. sam, let's see if you can count the cars on the road now. i think i'm counting about ten right now. back to you. >> thank you, vianey. it's 6:14, and delays and changes for b.a.r.t. riders this morning. the transit agency is using this memorial day weekend to get some track work done. the lake merritt station in oakland has been closed all weekend. as you might have noticed, and will remain closed through today as crews do some planned work on the tracks there. no service between lake merritt and fruitvale stations, but

riders are taking buses and you should expect a 40-minute delay because of that. the bus bridges take just a little bit longer. >> all right. some people, kris, put this off until the absolute last minute. others go all out in their high school prom proposals. they seem to be getter more and more creative in general, but one recent prom posal in southern california leaving a lot of people angry. somebody spray painted the word prom on a rock in the santa monica mountains near sand stone peak. this is the second straight year vandals have done the exact same thing. authorities right now are trying to track down the culprit. it's not even original. >> thought even original. i don't think i even got eye contact when i got asked to prom. good but you got asked. >> homeland security's current laptop ban affecting flights from ten international airports may soon be widened to include all u.s. international flights. that ban prevents travelers from bringing laptops and other larger electronic devices larger than a phone, say, in a carry-on

bag. appearing on fox news sunday, homeland security director john kelly said he's now considering broadening the ban, not because of a specific threat. because of broader terror concerns. >> it is 6:16 right now on your. back online, british airways flights out of england are getting back to normal after a major computer system failure. the airlines canceled all flights out of heathrow and gatwick on saturday after a power supply problem disrupted operations worldwide. you can only imagine the trickle effect of that. british air said all flights to gatwick are now back as are most flights out of heathrow. >> at sfo, crews resumed work on a lengthy runway repaving project that created quite the bit of headache for travelers this holiday weekend. fortunately, that work is not expected to impact flights today. workers are trying to meet an early deadline to fix the runway after recent weather related problems. >> as bay area real estate

prices go higher, so too does the spending on home improvement projects and remodels. experts say as home prices increase, homeowners have more equity that they can draw on. that means they're willing to plunk some of that money down on home improvements. this is a phenomenon that is boosting home improvement businesses nationwide, but it is perhaps most pronounced here in the bay area. rising temperatures right now melting all of the snow in the sierra, not all, but certainly enough of it where it's kraezing some serious runoff issues and no waterfalls in the tahoe area. some of the new falls are forming and rushing near highways causing people out driving or taking a hike to stop and look at what's going on. this comes after the sierra snow pack measured 200% of average last month. a lot of snow to work with. the waterfalls are expected to peak between now and three weeks from now, as high elevation snow melts and lakes start to

defrost. officials say people need to be really careful when they're checking out the waterfalls. >> so there's more extreme chances of hypothermia, slipping on rocks that haven't been wet in years because of the increased moisture flow. if you can, stay out of the water. all right, so beautiful but dangerous. the u.s. forest service says the last thyme been run-off like this, you have to go back to 2011. >> some of those traffic shots from our cameras have been so empty. it looks like they're frozen in time. but we know that folks are going to be heading out later today. >> yeah, and maybe they're already in tahoe or if you have a long week, you'll be able to enjoy the nice weather here in the bay area. now, do start out with some cloudy skies and it's all nice and quiet. take a look at the roadways, also looking at the peninsula camera. palo alto, not a lot going on. cloudy and temperatures now in the mid 50s, but we have lower 50s in the north bay, taking a

live look outside from belvedere towards san francisco. patchy fog in spots. as we go through this afternoon, we're going to see the high temperatures just a little warmer than yesterday. the peninsula up to 72. south bay, 74 degrees. and 78 degrees in the tri-valley. north bay up to 77 degrees. while san francisco will be at 64. in san francisco today, it will be breezy. if you're planning to head to the giants game, it won't be all that warm. we will get some sunshine, temperatures at 1:00, first pitch at 1:05, 60 degrees. lower 60s, and then it starts to drop right on back down into the 50s once again. we're also having to deal with a moderate amount of tree pollen in the air. low grass, mold, and weeds. mostly olive and pine, as far as the tree pollen time we're having to see the moderate levels of. as we go through the week, it's going to be nice and sunny in san francisco. at least for the afternoon hours. we'll see a repeat of somes each day, and our temperatures will

start to warm up in time for the weekend. we just had a cool weekend, so plan on this weekend coming up to be much warmer than the weekend we just had. and then look at those inland areas. we start out this week in the low to mid 70s and then by the end of the week, we're in the mid 80s. and 87 degrees with a peek at those temperatures on sunday. what's happening on the roadways? >> not much, so if you do have to work early this morning, at least you don't have to take extra time. you might even be able to enjoy youry on your couch and not have to take it to go because the speed sensors all showing a green light. not showing any major delays, even down near the south bay where we were seeing slowing around northbound 280. the southbound drive time, about 13 minutes, northbound 87 to highway 101, about 11 minutes, and for east bay drive times, also looking very smooth. all around green sensors. typically, we start seeing yellow and red for some slowing,

welcome back. it's 6:24 on your memorial day monday. now that it's the summertime, at least unofficially, it's important to be smart about the sun as you're out enjoying the weather and going to the water. the american cancer society recommends using a sunscreen with an spf of 30 or higher. and you tell parents all the time that should be reapplied every two hours. if you're going to be outside for a long time, wear protective clothing. a hat with two to three-inch prim to protect of the dangerous uv rays. the best way to avoid a sunburn is to stay indoors in the middle

of the day when the risk is the highest. >> 6:24. also critical to protect your eyes from the sun. experts recommend buying sunglasses that offer 100% protection. larger sunglasses are better because they help cover the skin around the eye. and that is a place where small skin cancers can develop over time. be careful, though, when buying sunglasses online. the u.s. requires sunglasses to have uv protection, but that is not the case in every country. before you fire up the dwril this memorial day, some good reminders from food experts so you don't make your family and friends sick. before you take out your steaks or burgers off the grill, make sure you use a food thermometer to make sure all meat is thoroughly cooked. also, don't put cooked food on the same plate that held raw meat or poultry. urwife will tell you that, too, and be sure to throw away any food sitting out longer than two hours. i am a cross contamination like -- i'm like, don't touch that. >> i'm with you 1,000%.

traffic delays. we were seeing a fender bended reported in the south bay, but it looks like that has cleared off to the side. i want to remind you about the mass transit. lake merritt station is closed for track work, and ignore the monday schedule and look towards the sunday schedule if you're planning on taking any of those, and ace, no ace train service due to memorial day today. i'll send it back to you. >> all right, thank you very much. >> we have breaking news to get to this morning out of the east bay where we are just getting word about police activity in castro valley right nu. >> pete suratos just got on scene at center street, just forth of 580 to show us what's going on. we know you're the first reporter there. what is lot enforcement telling you now? >> yeah, good morning to you. there's a lot of police activity here. we're just getting to the scene on center street in castro valley. want to show you, you have alameda county sheriff's office in this area on center street and veronica way. we're told this is a situation involving a barricaded suspect.

getting that information from chp who is right next to me. they're helping with traffic control. we're still working to gather information on exactly what led to this barricade in this area. we can report they have been on the scene since 5:30. we're talking roughly an hour, dealing with this active scene here involving a barricaded suspect. we don't know what led to the barricade. don't know if the suspect is armed at this point, but it's an active scene in a very residential part of castro valley. to recap, if you're looking at this, alameda county sheriff's office dealing with a barricaded suspect situation in this area. working to gather more information on this ongoing situation in castro valley. we'll send it back to you in the studio. >> stay safe out there, pete. new this morning, out of the north bay now, and a look at this video just coming in to our news room in the last hour or so of flames ripping through a home in sonoma. sonoma valley fire and rescue tell us at least ten people were

displaced after fire destroyed this how. you see cars burning as well, three cars. neighbors had to be evacuate because of a gas leak which crews were having trouble getting under control. nobody is hurt. >> police are investigating the fourth officer-involved shooting in san jose this month alone. it was a chaotic scene that unfolded in downtown san jose over the weekend at the donner loft apartments on east st. john's street. police responded to a disturbance on the second floor some time around 1:00 in the morning. police chief eddie garcia said the suspect had an ax and was charging at officers. garcia says officers had no choice but to shoot him. >> this is tragic for the suspect and the suspect's family, but what often gets lost in these cases is the impact on the officers. >> police also say the man killed had a history of mental illness. >> also new this morning, going back now to the north bay. police are investigating a shooting that sent two people to

the hospital. santa rosa police say both victims were shot just before 10:00 last night in what thaw believe is a gang-related attack. the victims were walking on a bike path near martin luther king jr. park. one victim was found on graend avenue, then authorities went to another location and found a victim on colgon avenue. both victims are said to be in serious condition right now. we'll follow this for you. >> in san francisco, police still investigating a deadly shooting that happened just after midnight sunday morning. happened on mission street near maynard street. officers say when they arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound and another man with a gun. that man was arrested. the man who was shot died at the scene. neither the victim nor the suspect have been publicly identified yet. >> a man is facing battery charges after authorities say he punched a b.a.r.t. train operator over the weekend. it happened saturday night around 6:30 at the pittsburg bay point station. no word on what led to the violent behavior but we're following the stories.

>> fans of the popular east bay garden are organizing an event to repair damage done by recent vandalism. the gardens of lake merritt offer seven acres of theme gardens. admission is free, great for the family. its facebook page, operators say vandals last weekend caused about $50,000 of damage to water and electriceal systems along with plants. next saturday morning, they're planning on holding a work party. >> vice president mike pence is scheduled to kick off the project hero memorial day bike ride in washington today. the cycling event brings people together to raise funds for project hero, which is a national nonprofit that helps wounded veterans. it particularly helps those who suffer from post traumatic stress disorder. >> to washington, d.c. on this memorial day, or staying in washington, d.c., president trump is back in the u.s. today. the president is facing questions about his budget as well as new developments in the

multiple sources confirming his son-in-law and adviser jared kushner is under scrutiny by the fbi. >> he's not a target, and so i think i would just wait. sounds like he's more than glad to talk about all of these things. >> according to the washington post, kushner tried to set up back channel communications with russia. >> i don't see any big issue here relative to jared. >> they did a review of his security clearance to find out whether he was truthful. >> the trump administration is also chasing another leak, intelligence about the manchester bombing. >> i think it's darn close to treason. >> with the fight against isis ramping up -- >> this is doing to be a long fight. >> -- the president is proposing more money for defense and less for diplomacy. >> destroying soft power does not make us safer. >> president trump tweeted his budget has promises for all.

50 acres. at last check, the fire was about 70% contained. new this morning, bizarre allegations of racism reported at a south bay high school. los gatos high school leaders are reportedlying now two recent prom invitations with racist overtones. in one of them, a female student of color was asked to the prom by a male student wearing black face makeup. the chronicle reports the other snept involved a racist poster. both of them were reported 1st by the skew newspaper. high school administrators released a statement to the paper saying that would not be tolerated. >> first, conviction, now sentencing. closing arguments set to continue in the penalty phase of the sierra lamar murder case. jurors convicted antolin garcia torres of first degree murder for the morgan hill teenager's death. with an enhancement of kidnapping which means he is eligible for death row. this week, the jury could announce the sentence. last week, the defense delivered

its closing arguments and prosecutors will have their chance tomorrow. >> a developing story now out of portland this morning where a community is coming together following the loss of two brave men who were stabbed and killed after coming to the defense of two young women this weekend. hundreds came to a vigil to a 53-year-old army veteran and a 23-year-old recent college graduate. they were stabbed to death after confronting a man who was shouting anti-muslim slurs at two young women who were just riding a light rail train in portland. a third victim was stabbed but survived the attack. all are being hailed as heroes. the suspect, who was arrested, was well known in that community for his racist and extremist beliefs. >> heads-up if you're planning a camping trip anytime soon. u-haul is recalling a one-pound propane gas cylinder using for camping trailers and stoves. might look familiar to you. the cylinder tanks were recalled because of safety concerns. they have been sold at u-haul

let's head to the east bay, antioch up to 80 degrees. and oakland, 65 degrees. some upper 50s along the coast where the clouds will be slower to clear. for palo alto with more sunshine, 72 degrees there. 62 on the embarcadero, and santa rosa, up to 67 degrees. as you're looking out the window getting ready for the day, it will be a day for long sleeves especially when you see all the clouds. maybe bring a hat for the day because we will have sunshine breaking out. it will give you a little shade. we're going to see clouds in san francisco starting out this morning at 8:00, the mid 50s there, and then rising into the low 60s as we go into this afternoon. and as we go through the rest of the week, our temperatures will be cool to start, but then look towards the end of the week into the weekend, it be about ten degrees warmer by saturday for those high temperatures. inland areas will be in the mid 70s. today up to 87 degrees on saturday. that will be the peak of those warm temperatures. we may not have the clouds like

center street just north of interstate 580. pete is talking with investigators to try to find out what happened that preciped this. it is a fluid situation and we'll continue toter it throughout the morning. a live report at 7:25 when we break in during the "today" show. >> more breaking news now to get to. this time out of solano county where vacaville police are investigating a deadly shooting involving officers there. the incident left one police officer injured. police say it started a little after midnight when officers tried to pull over a stolen car. that triggered a chase that ended on nut tree road near orange drive, across the street from the outlets. after the chase, police exchanged gunfire and killed the suspect. we do not know what kind of injuries the officer suffered, only that they're not life threatening. >> new this morning, chp officers are investigating a deadly early morning crash in the east bay that happened on eastbound interstate 580 just west of 1st street in livermore.

that crash was reported around 2:30 this morning. at least three cars wered. one of the cars caught fire. >> from tragedy to update you on now during new york's fleet week. a navy parachutist dead after plunging into the water after his parachute failed to open properly. he was part of the elite u.s. navy s.e.a.l. parachute team that was descending in formation near the statue of liberty. members of the coast guard rushed to help out but he died at the hospital. >> a big show of support for the victims of the manchester terror attack. hundreds of people turned out for a vigil overnight for one of the people who died in last monday's suicide bomber. 22 people were killed and dozens of others were injured. 16 people have been arrested in connection with that attack so far. two have been released. president trump is back from his overseas trip on u.s. soil this morning. he's going to beobserving memorial day with a trip to arlington national cemetery, as
