at the white house, with nbc's kristen welker. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the president was hoping his first foreign trip would help turn the page on the negative headlines on the russia probe. but he's back at the white house and the scrutiny deepening. with his son-in-law at the center of some of the latest revelations. this morning, the president is back on defense. president trump returning to washington from his first foreign trip. and bracing for battle, after "the washington post" reported over the weekend, his son-in-law, jared kushner, tried to set up a back channel for communicating with the russians in december, before the inauguration. kushner is now a focus in the russian investigation by the fbi app a source familiar with the thinking inside the white house, a few people suggested that kushner should lay low for a while. the trump administration on defense. >> it's normal and unacceptable. any way you can communicate with people, particularly

organizations not particularly friendly to us, is a good thing. >> reporter: attorney mark cass wits who will represent the president in the russia proep, was spotted talking to icavanka trump. and mr. trump who stayed off social media on the trip, was back on twitter. it's my opinion that many of the leaks coming out of the white house are fabricated lies. other republicans backing him up. >> i don't trust this story as far as i can throw it. >> reporter: on "meet the press," former director of national intelligence, james clapper, had a different take on a back channel. >> i will tell you that, my dashboard warning light was clearly on. that was a the case with all of the us in the intelligence committee. >> reporter: and some democrats pounced on kushner. >> there ought to be a review of his security clearance to find out if he was truthful. >> reporter: after trump was given warm welcomes in saudi arabia and israel, he may have

roiled allies in europe, scolding nato allies for failing to pay their fair share. angela merkel saying america can't the trusted, saying we as yurms must take our destiny into our own hands. as for kushner, it's important to point out that he's not the subject of the investigation. and those familiar with the matter say he's focused on work and is eager to cooperate with any investigation. and despite buzz about him laying low, there's no indication the president shares that view. mr. trump telling "the new york times," jared is doing a great job for the country and has total confidence in him. the president will lay a wreath at arlington national cemetery and delivering remarks. >> kristen, thank you. john harwood is cnbc's editor at large. let's start with the war room idea that the white house is supposedly setting up to combat

revelations related to the russia probe. if you consider that a lot of the revelations seem to be coming from inside the administration, how effective can this war room be? >> well, it's a huge challenge for them because this is not simply an argument between the president and members of the other party. in is an argument or a conflict between the president, his own fbi, his own cia, his own justice department, where there's a special counsel investigating all of these matters involving russia. and i have to say, this report, if true, of jared kushner trying to start a secret back channel using russian facilities, is not normal. it's not usual. there's not really a good explanation for it. we'll have to see if the report proves to be correct. >> you mentioned that "the new york times" has reported that a back channel was proposed to discuss syria and other national security issues. if that's the case, then is there any justifiable reason then why they needed to, you

know, use secretly communicate with the russians or diplomatic facilities without including the pentagon? >> to use russian facilities to do that? no, there isn't. and it raises basic questions of what side jared kushner and the -- his associates within the trump transition were on. and if you look at the results, sheinel sheinelle, of this foreign trip, the strains that kristen mentioned in her piece, between the united states, members of nato, angela merkel, french president macron, that's a principal goal of the russians to weaken the western alliance. you see what the long-term consequences was, but it seems to accomplish what vladimir putin wanted to accomplish. >> mr. kushner wrapped up in the

investigation. and reports that the president was pressuring jim comey to let the investigation go. the president asking his intel chiefs also to push back on the fbi investigation. to you, what picture is emerging? >> it's a picture of a white house and a set of actors within the white house, jared kushner, michael flynn's no longer there, in deep trouble. this is a serious investigation. robert mueller is a very serious person, who takes the concerns of the intelligence committee seriously. i'm not sure a war room of operatives in the white house is adequate to the task. i this i they have big problems. this happens at a time when they're entire legislative agenda is struggling. they don't have a tax plan yet. the health care plan is nowhere to pass the house, extremely unpopular. the senate hasn't moved yet. that's why you see the president lashing out at the fake news media and accusing people of making up stories, which

this is a fast-moving investigation. police raiding multiple properties across manchester and making another arrest. a 23-year-old man in custody on suspicion of terrorism-related offenses, bringing the total number of people in custody to 14. this weekend, more raids and more arrests. a manhunt that shows no signs of slowing down, as a suspected network behind the manchester bomber is rounded up. 1,000 investigators working around the clock. and it seems to be paying off. the threat level lowers from critical to severe, even as armed patrols remain deployed in the lodge weekend. authorities releasing these images of the suicide bomber. they located the apartment where they believe he built the bomb before heading to day rena to commit last monday's massacre. 22 lives cut short, honored on sunday at the great manchester run.

go into cities and hold celebrations like air shows to honor the country's military. one of the celebrations in jersey city turned deadly when a member of an elite parachute squad lost his life. on this memorial day weekend, tragedy for the u.s. navy. a parachutist killed after crashing into the water during a fleet week celebration in jersey city. navy officials say the parachute malfunctioned and failed to open properly. this video shows the yellow cloth floating into a nearby parking lot. >> it's going to be 70 green. party one fall. parachute down. >> reporter: witnesses telling nbc news, the man fell from the sky with his parachute on. but began spiraling downward. >> he landed in the water adjacent to liberty state park. he was reprieved immediately by u.s. coast guard personnel and the jersey city fire department

marine unit. >> reporter: the man was taken to jersey city medical center where he was pronounced dead. the fall happening during a scheduled demonstration of the navy's elite leapfrogs parachute team, which performs throughout the country. made up of active duty navy s.e.a.l.s, the unit performs jumps from as high as 12,000 feet. the victim's name has not been released. authorities are waiting to notify his family. and now an investigation is under way to determine the cause of the malfunction. now that same parachute team was scheduled to hold an event in citi field in new york city today. they've canceled that event, given yesterday's tragedy. authorities will release the name of that s.e.a.l. 24 hours after they notify his family. >> so sad. morgan, thank you. also this morning, we're learning about the suspect of a deadly shooting rampage in mississippi. in all, eight people killed, including a sheriff's deputy. maya rodriguez has the latest on that investigation. maya, good morning to you.

>> reporter: good morning, craig. this morning, this small mississippi community has been shaken to the core. willie cory godbolt, who goes by cory, essentially confessing on camera to a reporter that he killed eight people. among them a deputy from this department and two boys. this all allegedly started because of a domestic dispute that turned into a massacre. this morning, a troubling portrait emerging of 35-year-old cory godbolt, the man accused of going on a horrific killing spree in rural mississippi, leaving eight people dead, including a sheriff's deputy and two boys. >> i ain't fit to live. not after what i done. >> reporter: his aunt, shirley mcgowan, says godbolt had problems. >> he would do things and say things like, i'm bad. and nobody can attack me. >> reporter: authorities say the carnage apparently stemmed from a domestic dispute involving godbolt's wife and kids. they escaped by jumping out of a window.

>> he killed my daughter. >> i'm so sorry. >> he killed my two sisters-in-law and my niece. he killed a deputy, and then he killed my nephew's son and his nephew. >> reporter: godbolt allegedly targeted three separate homes. three women were killed in the first house, along with deputy william durr, 36 years old, a husband and father. at the second home, deputies found the bodies of two underaged boys. then a man and woman found dead at the third house. vincent mitchell witnessed the killing of his wife. >> i honest believe he came to kill everybody in the house. i honestly believe that. >> reporter: after he was caught by deputies he spoke with this reporter. >> he knew what he had done and he was not afraid to talk about it. >> i ran out of bullets. >> that's a good thing they showed mercy. >> suicide by cop was my intention. >> reporter: this morning godbolt is being held on seven counts of first-degree murder

water parks. the opening of a new one in california took a shocking turn when a boy was flung from a giant slide. nbc's steve patterson has more on that. steve, good morning. >> reporter: chansheinelle, you see behind me it was 80 feet drop. thankfully towards the bottom of the ride he slid off. as you can see from the video he was moving fast when he hit the pavement. a trip to a brand-new water park this weekend takes a horrifying turn and the whole thing is caught on camera. a 10-year-old sliding off the end of a three-story water slide in california's the wave water park and slamming into the ground at high speed. >> i thought he was dead at first. he hit the ground pretty hard. >> reporter: incredibly the boy gets right back up escaping the spill with only minor injuries treated at the hospital. >> he did have scraping on his back. once again, we checked him out fully.

he was talking to us and smiling and was in good spirits. >> reporter: this is the latest in a series of recent accidents at water parks across the country. last summer, a 10-year-old kansas boy, caleb schwab, was killed going down the world's tallest water slide at schlitterbahn water park. this month, his family received a $20 million settlement. some are wondering who is holding the parks accountable. >> there are no federal regulations or reporting requirements for amusement parks or water parks. >> reporter: 24 states, including california, have comprehensive inspection programs. other states leave it to the private sect or or have minimal requirements. six states have no regulations at all. >> it's safety first everything we do. we have been testing that slide for a couple of weeks. the slides were certified by the state of california. >> more than 4,200 people are year are taken to the e.r. for injuries suffered on public

seattle 71 degrees. temperatures running well above average. as we go through the middle of the week, you see them drop back down. seattle, back down into the 60s. spokane in the 70. boise on tuesday 70 degrees on thursday. in the northeast, highs topping out in the mid-70s. 54 in boston with a lot of clouds hanging on all day long. and back in the 70s by the middle of the week. norfolk, in the we're seeing a lot of clouds around the bay area. even some drizzle in san francisco. but we will get a little bit sunshine today and a high of 64 degrees. we'll be up to 62 degrees tomorrow, and then our temperatures will be warming up the rest of the week, up to 69 degrees on friday and low 70s for the weekend. for the inland areas and in the valleys, it will be really warming up by the weekend. we'll be in the upper 80s by saturday. so enjoy the milder temperatures we're starting out with this week and some sunshine during the afternoon.

talking to people all across the country. they have presenters who go out from families and veterans, to talk to people about it. i was one of the original sponsors of legislation for the all-volunteer military. we have the greatest military on the face of the earth. there were a lot of people that weren't connected to the military. this foundation, the travis manion foundation is particularly important because they connect people who may not have relatives in the military with the military. and they get a chance to hear the stories of people who served and meet the families of people who served. >> ryan, tell us about your brother. tell us about travis. >> my mother was my best friend. we're 15 months apart. brew up grew up in a military family. we understand the meanling of service. we understood it from a very young age. but it wasn't until he lost his life in 2007 that we began to

understand the meaning of sacrifice. and i always say travis would be very proud of the work that's happening at the travis manion foundation. but he would be terribly upset to know that we named it the travis manion foundation. like many men and women in our military, their incredibly humble. they just want to get out there. they're the epitome of what servant leadership is all about. >> i understand that you met at travis' graduation, isn't that right? >> at a wrestling match. >> he was a wrestler. >> and you're a wrestler. >> i'm a brokendown exwrestler. that's a long time ago. but i'm partial to wrestlers. and he was a good one. >> i understand that your foundation just announced a $500,000 donation to the ryan manion foundation. why this particular group? and i want to ask what this money will be used for. >> this group is doing something distinctive. it's connecting people who

and walks away. that slide, the entire $42 millimil million water park, debuted on wednesday. investigators are trying to figure out what went wrong. many in the bay area take pause to reflect on the many military who made the ultimate sacrifice. this celebration in san francisco is getting ready to hold its annual çceremony. this year will mark the 149th commemoration there in the presidio. hundreds, if not thousands, are expected to attend. in the meantime, we'll look at your weather and traffic coming up right after this break. weather toss to traffic

we'll start to see some warmer air moving in by the end of the week. by saturday we'll be in the low 70s. for the inland areas, expect it to be very nice and comfortable and then turning hot in time for saturday. how are the road moving? >> still looking pretty quiet and pretty lonely. right now speed sensors not picking up many accidents. we've seen a couple fender benders in the south bay. still no lights, and in palo alto, definitely a smooth commute this morning. >> it's like ghost highways out there. thank you very much. that's going to do it for us. we'll have more coming up in just 30 minutes.

for the cast of "the love boat." for ten seasons, the cast made viewers want to jump on the ship headed for any destination. >> the show debuted 40 years ago. we caught up with the cast. gavin macleod played captain steuben. cynthia lauren tewes played julie mccoy. and the purser, gopher, played by fred grandey. gavin, let me start with you, you were the captain. why do you think this show captured so many imaginations 40 years ago? this was a huge hit. >> it was never done on

television before. this was the first big show on a cruise ship with over 1,000 guest stars all over the world. and had three different stories. had the happy endings are something that people love. i always loved that as a viewer. and people love happy endings. and that was one of the goals aaron spelling had putting the show together. and we were able to bring the world to television viewers because after the first few years, we went all over europe. you know, china. just name it. and that's where we were. representing the united states and having a great time. as a result, people wanted to take cruises. we started with two small ships. and princess cruises has eight magnificent ships with two more on the way. it's successful because it's giving people what they want. and it's fulfilling dreams. i've been doing this so many years. i was young when i started. if you can believe it, i had hair. i never had hair.

one that almost cost him his life. >> he did almost die on the helicopter. there was a nurse that held his wound down with her own body so he did not bleed out. >> reporter: zach was air-lifted to germany and then to walter reed. but as is the case with so many soldiers, while rhyner was back in his homeland, he was in a forced military retirement. >> the military was all i knew in my whole adult life. it was hard to make that transition. especially when you deal with having a life-changing injury. >> reporter: each day was a battle, physically and emotionally. the wounds on his shattered leg, paralyzed from the knee down, took more than a year to heel. >> i mean, i contemplated suicide. i was in an incredible amount of pain. >> reporter: helping him through it all, then-girlfriend jillian, who he proposed to from his

hospital bed. >> he said, i don't feel it's fair to you to go through all of this. >> reporter: their marriage helped the healing enormously. and rhyner's decision to go back to school in medical care. >> i would like to get a job working with the v.a. that would be the ultimate goal. >> our community welcomes you to be our newest resident. >> reporter: and the final moment of magic that would make this soldier feel at home again, an organization called helping hero hearn rhyner's story and helped him and his family make a fresh start in a new custom-designed house. >> it's a major problem that these warriors are forgotten about. we want to make sure they are able to not have so much attention on where they live, how they're living. and that they can move forward with whatever game they want to play in life. >> helping a hero provides financial assistance, offsetting

saturday. for the inland areas, we will see those temperatures also climbing after a start this week in the low to mid-70s, it will be in the mid-80s for friday and upper 80s just in time for the weekend. for an update on the roads -- >> traffic speed sensors all green, which means not a lot of slowing and we're definitely showing our drive times. not a lot of traffic picking up. we were seeing some slowing in the south bay but that has all cleared. 101 about 13 minutes. they have turned on the meter lights, so we have seen more of a backup, but as we head to the 101, starting to see more cars on the road. authorities in florida this morning arrested golfer tiger woods. woods is accused of driving under the influence. deputies in jupiter, florida says woods was pulled over for
