i'm gigi stone woods. thanks for joining us. >> i'm frances rivera. lay low, that's the advice given to president trump's son-in-law jared kushner after days of reports are he engaged in previously undisclosed communications with a russian operatives attempting to create a back channel with russia during the transition. this morning "the new york times" is out with a report federal and congressional investigators examining a discussion with a russian banker and close associate of vladamir putin. kushner's goal during the discussion, to establish a direct line to russian president vladamir putin himself, according to u.s. officials who spoke to the times. and now republican senator john mccain is out with a stark warning for those who would doubt putin. >> i think he is the premier and most important threat more so than isis, i think isis can do terrible things. it's the russians who are tried to destroy the very fundamental

of the democracy and that is to change the outcome of an american election. i view the russians as a far -- as the far greatest challenge that we have. >> president trump has said he has full confidence in kushner calling him a good guy. the new allegation hitting the white house comes as the president commemorated memorial day at arlington cemetery. honoring fallen soldiers and those who served. >> words cannot measure the depth of their devotion, the purity of their love, or the totality of their courage. >> while mr. trump honored the fallen here at home, he was pointedly criticized abroad days after meeting with world leaders. on the 100th anniversary of his birth, angela merkel used this john f. kennedy quote without mentioning his name. quote, those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future. >> the chancellor was likely referring to the paris climate

accord after mr. trump said he will make his final decision whether to withdraw this week. also expected trump's pick to lead the fbi weeks after he ousted then fbi director james comey. tiger woods is in trouble with the law. the golf legend was arrested in jupiter, florida, for allegedly driving under the influence. it was not immediately clear whether police believed he was affected by alcohol or drugs. nbc's dan sheneman has the details. >> reporter: it's not an image any one is used to seeing of tiger woods, arrested and charged monday morning in south florida for driving under the influence. woods issued a statement apologizing and saying i want the public to know that alcohol was not involved. what happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications. the arrest follows woods' fourth back surgery that has sidelined him from golf. last week woods seemed to indicate the surgery was a success and said he had not felt

this good in years i want to say i want to play professional golf again. for years trouble followed the former top golfer second on the all-time list with 14 major titles. most notably his 2009 suv accident outside his home in florida the divorce that followed and revelations he engaged in extramarital affairs. in 2010 he publicly apologized. >> i'm deeply sorry for my irresponsible and selfish behavior i engaged in. >> reporter: back then he took five months off and spent two months in therapy at a mississippi clinic for sex addicti addiction, costing millions in endorsements. dan schenamen, nbc news. >> breaking overnight ousted dictator manuel noriega died. details on what killed the 83-year-old were not immediately known. he did suffer a brain hemorrhage

in march that left him in critical condition for months after surgery to remove a benign brain tumor. noriega, a former cia spy and convicted cocaine trafficker, ruled panama from 1983 to 1989. he spied for the cia before the u.s. invaded and ousted him in 1989. toppling his regime and ending his decades-long drugs career, inked with drug king pen pablo escobar. he was sentenced to 40 years in prison by the u.s. in 1992. and was also convicted by france before being extradited back to panama. authorities had granted him house arrest to undergo the brain operation. noriega dead at 83. >> a bombing in central baghdad. iraqi officials say a car bomb detonated outside a popular ice cream shop killing 13 people and wounding 24 more.

the attack happened after midnight local time. the militant group isis is claiming responsibility. at home the u.s. military identified the navy s.e.a.l. who died in a sky diving demonstration over the hudson river sunday. 27-year-old remington peters of colorado was a member of the elite leapfrogs team. authorities are investigating why thinks parachute failed to open. his family says he was known with a fierce loyalty to his friends, family and country. they described him as a selfless humble and quiet professional. to manchester, england authorities asking for public help in tracking down the movements of suspected bomber salman abedi in the days before the explosion. police released this photo of abedi seen carrying a blue suit case. they are asking anyone who may have seen him from the 18th to the 22nd to call an anti terrorist hotline. the bbc obtained this footage reportedly of abedi at a store days before the bombing. so far 14 people are being held for questioning in the attack.

hundreds gathered in saint ann's square monday night for a vigil marking one week since 22 people were killed. a moment of silence was held after 10:30 local time, the exact moment the bomb went off. >> there's slides at a water park in dublin, california, remain closed this morning as safety investigators investigate a horrifying incident. 10-year-old boy flew off the side of one of the slides. it happened minutes after the park's grand opening. miguel almaguer has more. >> reporter: plunging three stories down the 10-year-old rockets over the side of the slide, slamming into the concrete. incredibly the boy is able to walk away with minor injuries. >> i thought he was dead at first because he hit the ground pretty hard. you hear it. >> reporter: safety officials inspecting the slide at the wave, a new $43 million water park opened for just 90 minutes before the accident.

>> hopefully they will take steps to put something in place to prevent stuff like that. >> reporter: with 85 million visiting water parks every year accidents are rare but happen. last summer 10-year-old caleb was killed in kansas city going down the world's tallest water slide which is yet to reopen. this month his family received a $20 million settlement. at water and amusement parks there are no federal regulations. 24 states have government inspectors, the rest depend on the private sector or have no regulations at all. at the wave, they've launched an investigation. >> safety first, everything that we do. we have been testing that slide for a matter of a couple weeks. >> reporter: on this unofficial start of summer new safety concerns at some of the most popular attractions across the country. miguel almaguer, nbc news, los angeles. good samaritans in dallas may have saved a police officer's live trying to push

while their boat burst into flames, forcing them to jump into the water as they tried to escape the blaze. the rubber boat had more than 30 people on board, most wearing lifejackets. all the migrants were successfully rescued which is a miracle considering the series of the events. their nationalities not immediately known. legendary sportscaster died on saturday. he wrote for "sports illustrated" for over 50 years and he was a frequent voice on npr's "morning edition." he worked as a correspondent for "real sports with bryant gumbel. frank deford dead at the age of 78. a family in florida ready to take a dip in the pool. can you imaginmagine, a seven t eight foot alligator. they were able to call a trapper in time.
