good wednesday morning. you'll feel a little humidity and mist out there when you wake up this morning. spotty showers right now in several parts of the bay area as we take a live look right now at the few brave souls who are on the road at 4:30 in the morning. today in the bay starts right now. good morning. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. i thought there was a lot of traffic out there and i was surprised alt all the rain. >> seeing spotty showers moving through parts of the south bay. this will be with us for the next 30 to 40 minutes and then clearing out. we can see it over the tri-valley, south bay, and even the south county right now. as we head out the door elsewhere across the bay area, it's mostly cloudy with some milder temperatures. it was just enough to make those

roads wet and make the car dirty, so that's what you'll have to deal with today. sunshine this afternoon, slightly warmer temperatures in spots. in the tri-valley, up to 73 degrees. 74 in the north bay and san francisco will still be windy again today, up to 63 degrees. we'll look at a warmer weekend coming up. mike starts out with a crash in san jose. >> also some slicker roadways because of the mist. i hit some slicker roadways on city streets. we're taking it down here to just the northbound 101, around bernal, a report of a car that got into a crash with a big rig. two lanes blocked. there may be some injuries and chp will give us much more details but it seems like a fluid situation. sensors aren't showing slowing yet, but we'll track this here. in the tri-valley, i'll show you the live shot from dublin. this is the off ramp, look how shiny it is here. there are slicker roadways

because of the misand drizzle as well as the crash further back. back to you. >> thank you very much. we'll check back with you. >> 4:31. breaking news out of kabul, afghanistan this morning. at least 80 people are dead and more than 300 wounded in a suicide bombing that detonated hundreds of yards from the german embassy in a packed part of town considered one of the safest in the city. employees from the german embassy were injured. most of the people were killed were civilians, mostly women and children. it was considered a powerful blast. blowing out the windows of buildings a half a mile away. the taliban issued a statement saying it had nothing to do with the attack. so far, no word from isis. new this morning, with concerns really rising right now about laptops and airplane safety, a scare on an sfo-bound flight. this happened after a jetblue

flight took off from new york city. >> a lithium battery ignited midflight, forcing the plan to divert and land in michigan. bob redell is live at sfo where passengers just returned a few hours ago with some reaction from them. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and sam. what one passenger on jetblue flight 915 described to us was unnevering. a flight attendance midnight getting on the p.a. to announce smoke coming from one of the back rows of the airplane. the flight attendant did open a storage bin, found a backpack, and inside the backpack, a laptop emitting that smoke. she started to try to put out the fire, according to the passenger we spoke with. the faa reports the cause appears to have been the computer's lithium battery. the pilot did divert the plane to an airport in grand rapids, firefighters did respond but it fire was out by the time they responded at around 8:00 last

night. >> 35,000 feet, all of a sudden you hear an announcement and look back and we saw everybody standing up and smoke coming around. we didn't know what was going on. >> it was a scary, calm situation. it was like you're in shock but you can't really do anything. that's how i would describe it. >> none of the 158 people onboard was hurt. maintenance workers inspected the plane in michigan before allowing it to continue on here to sfo. the flight arrived here last night about three hours later than initially planned. reporting live, bob redell, today in the bay. >> thanks for the latest there, bob. >> 4:34 right now. new details, authorities so far not saying if a san jose state student will be charged with a hoax involving an ubduction that never happened. we learned that the student was being treated at an oregon hospital after she said she was forced at knifepoint to drive north last friday. she said she escaped her

kidnapper when the car ran out of gas. after interviewing the woman, san jose police last night announced she made the whole thing up. we spoke to fellow students who were both relieved but puzzled. >> for all of us to stick together for each other, so i feel like everyone felt that hurt. and then when it turned out not to be true, everyone maybe felt a little betrayed. >> the student has not been identified. the school is saying this morning that they're glad that student is safe. >> something we have been watching closely here. police say early this morning, officers still on the scene of a lengthy standoff with a homicide suspect in oakland. this has been going on since yesterday afternoon on international boulevard near 51st avenue. police have been negotiated with the suspect who barricaded himself inside an apartment unit there. police say the suspect is tied to a deadly shooting that happened a few blocks away and that went down a little before 4:00 yesterday afternoon. >> 4:35. new this morning, police in

vallejo has identified a victim in a deadly hit-and-run accident. it happened last night. a car going southbound on columbus struck 51-year-old earnest howard of vallejo. police are now looking for the driver. authorities in burlingame believe the man in these surveillance images is connected to a package theft. police say the man stole a parcel from someone's porch on sunday night, about 10:30. it happened in the area of burlingame avenue and rollins road. >> happening today, helping out on some congestion on just a brutal commute stretch that you might tax to work every day. caltrans is considering a busy peninsula corridor for its next express toll lane conversion project. that would cover highway 101 to the interchange to the north all the way down to santa clara county. it would be free for carpoolers. transportation leaders believe

economic conditions. the dow falling 50 points yesterday to 21,029. the nasdaq down seven to 6203. meanwhile, apple's puzic version of carpool karaoke will make its debut on august 8th. it was delayed from april in its move to original video content, james corden who made carpool karaoke a hit on his show will appear in a segment with lebron james and will smith. meanwhile, the co-creator of the android operating system is jumping into the crowded smartphone market with his own high-end device. he designed the essential phone, which costs $699. it's made of titanium, which he says can withstand being dropped on concrete. the phone has magnetic connectors to accommodate accessories such as a 360 degree camera. he said he wanted to make a phone that doesn't require an

quarter to 5:00 on your wednesday morning. a striking shot of the san francisco skyline. a little bit of cloud cover in the background. you have the transamerica building looking nice and regal in the middle of your screen. we find some raindrops coming down in san francisco, too. >> glad i didn't wash the car yesterday. >> yeah, going to be very dirty today. and that's what the rain is doing now, making the roads slick so you really do have to slow it down as you head out this morning. and then as we go through the

day, it will be clearing out and also drying out as well. now, we're looking at the radar showing that rain across san jose over towards the tri-valley, and heavier downpours toward morgan hill. that's where we're seeing the problem spots this morning. this will continue to move off towards the east. the rain you had earlier this morning, we're measuring it. within the few hundredths of an inch are trace amounts. we're going to see temperatures stepping out the door in the mid tuper 50s. it feels mild. as we get the sunshine today, it will be about like it was yesterday, but a few spots will be warmer like morgan hill, up to 77 degrees. and gilroy will see a high of 78 degrees. heading over toward the east bay, concord up to 78. while hayward will be at 70 degrees for the high temperature this afternoon. 71 degrees in belmont, and for san francisco, up to 63 degrees. that's in the mission district, and now mill valley will see a

high of 72 degrees today, and santa rosa, expect a high of 74. as you're looking out the window, especially in san jose, where it is still sprinkling, you will need some long sleeves starting ow today, but don't forget the sunglasses because later on today, we'll get some bright sunshine and it will be a very nice afternoon after this rain clears. looking at oakland and the temperature trend, we'll be at 59 degrees starting out this morning, and then gradual clearing later today. high temperatures reaching the upper 60s. we'll be up to 68 degrees at 4:00. san francisco will only see some low 60s for the next couple days. morning clouds and fog and some afternoon clearing looking at highs in the low 70s just in time for the weekend on sunday. inland areas will be much warmer, looking at gusty winds today and partly cloudy skies. highs in the mid 70s. for the weekend, looks very nice. you can go ahead and make plans to get outside. heading to mike now, tracking two crashes?

>> i am. we have that crash in san jose i have been reporting, but also this other one in the tri-valley coming out of the altamont corridor. i want to show you the green, misty wet roadways likely in the bay, in intri-valley, tamper roadways, maybe puddles, but on 580 westbound, a slower drive approaching carroll that's because of a crash affecting the on ramp which happened early this morning as well. i think the flashing lights are visible and that's why we have the slowing. it doesn't sound like the lanes are blocked, just adding to the slow down. over here, we have northbound 101 which continues to see a slower drive. from metcalf right here, we have slowing because of a traffic break traveling up to the scene of the crash. again, a couple vehicles involved. a couple lanes blocked over there at blossom hill. the debris is the issue and no major injuries. let me show you what the options

three years. >> new this morning, quite a scare for passengers aboard an indonesian airplane today that skidded off a runway in foul weather. you can see from the video here, the plane ended up on the grass near the runway. as passengers were evacuated. indonesian leaders say no one was hurt. >> the pentagon said it successfully shot down a mock warhead over the indian ocean. this is seen as the u.s.'s ability to counterthe kind of missiles north korea is making. here's a video of the missile killing interceptor aimed at waters near san diego. this is all a mock demonstration. the test comes just two days after the latest north korean missile launch and nine already this year for that rogue country. former acting cia director john mclaughlin said american military tests won't stop north

supervisors in marin have already endorsed sb-54. >> california is getting closer to pet stores wiig banned from selling puppies and kittens unless they're rescue animals. the legislation moves to the state senate. the goal is to stop pet stores from buying animals that were bred at puppy mills. more than 30 cities and counties in california already have this kind of law in effect. happening today, talks of regulating air pollution from bay area oil refineries is heating up. there's a special public hearing today at the bay yare your air quality office. there are a few proposals being considered. among them, putting a hard cap that limited green house gases and other emissions from five refineries in the mission. >> firefighters will be conducting a large scale controlled burn in santa cruz today near the observation platform. nine acres will be burned. that will reduce wildfire

we're learning new details about the brawl at the giants game on monday. turns out it went from bad to worse for the team. giants outfielder michael morris got a concussion in the scuffle in at&t parb. in the middle of the screen, it was hard to watch. morris and jeff samardzija slammed their heads as they rushed into the melee. samardzija pitched in last night's game, but the giants lost. in the meantime, the league handed down its punishment, a six-game suspension for giants pitcher hunter strickland, and a four-game suspension for bryce harper. both are appealing that ruling. different kind of clash right now. the countdown is on. we're one day away from game one of the nba finals. a live look right now at oracle
