so glad you're along with us. we have craig melvin in for matt. unfortunately we're starting again with terrorism. we want to get right to our breaking news. overnight raids tied to saturday's van and knife attack on london bridge and at nearby bars and restaurants. we're also seeing chilling new video from that night for the first time. and the president has weighed in. we have complete coverage from london and the white house. let us start with nbc's chief global correspondent, bill neely. bill, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. new raids. new searches this morning. and the continuing aftershocks from saturday night's slaughter. the police and security services are facing tough questions about whether they've been monitoring the attackers in recent weeks. and if they were, why they didn't act sooner. dramatic, new video of police confronting three killers.

one man trying to survive, as officers fire volleys of gunfire at the men, who left dozens dead and injured. >> i'm trying to keep myself safe. >> reporter: dozens more running for their lives. >> just saw two guys getting shot. >> reporter: officers, killing the attackers within minutes. british media report that one of them is this man, filmed in a british channel 4 documentary, with an isis flag in a park last year, in a confrontation with police. >> we do believe we know who they are. we have made a number of arrests. >> reporter: police are searching more homes this morning. and investigating a claim by isis that it was responsible. the carnage began before 10:00 saturday night. terrorists driving their van on to london bridge. at 10:08 police got the first call that the van had mounted the sidewalk, ramming into pedestrians. when it stopped on the south side of the bridge, three men jumped out.

they ran into crowded borough market stabbing people, some multiple times, targeting drinkers at the tavern and diners at the black and blue restaurant. minutes after they were called, police fired 50 shots, killing all three attackers outside of the wheatsheaf pub. the first of the victims to be identified, is canadian chrissy archibald, who worked with the homeless. her family grieving the loss of a beautiful daughter and sister. >> she had room in her heart for everyone. >> reporter: after the saturday slaughter, the monday morning commute at london bridge. the security heavy, the anxiety real. well, britain's prime minister, theresa may has confirmed in the last hour, the identities of all three attackers are known. she's under pressure, so, too, are police. this is the third deadly attack in britain in three months.

the fear now of more copycat killing. >> thank you. jeremy bash, served as chief of staff and at the cia during the obama administration. jeremy, good morning. good to see you. >> as bill just mentioned, jeremy, two weeks ago we had the manchester bombing. two months ago, the attacker at the westminster bridge. mowing down pedestrians. third attack, last ten weeks. what's happening in the united kingdom? >> they don't appear to be connected. but this is the evolution of the threat. previous ramming attack, where people use these low tech means, a car, a knife, they have been mostly done by one individual, a lone wolf. in attack was low tech, a soft target, but done by a team. that gives investigators something to look at. these people had to communicate. they had to plan. they had to rent the vehicle. >> you mentioned it doesn't appear that the manchester attack and this attack over the weekend are connected. but are they related in a sense? when you see a big spectacular

attack like the one in manchester, does that inspire others who may be thinking about it, may be thinking about an attack like this? does that encourage them to get the courage and go for it? >> we think there is a copycat phenomenon. isis has used high-tech means to recruit, to incite, to encourage people to undertake the attacks. in the u.k., about 900 individuals have traveled between the uk and syria and iraq. there's about 3,000 individuals under active surveillance. >> it would seem that folks around radicalization, is a lot more common than it is here. is that a fair assessment? if show, why is that the case? >> you've seen in other countries, they have not done as good a job to integrate those into society. it's societal. the u.k. has to step up its game going after isis overseas. going deep into the command and control mode against isis in syria. >> jeremy bash, always good to have your perspective.

thank you. in his first speech since the london attack, president trump vowing to do whatever is necessary to keep the u.s. safe. but his initial response on twitter is a source of controversy this morning. we'll talk about that with one of the president's top advisers kellyanne conway in just a bit. but first, peter alexander at the white house. peter, good morning to you. >> craig, good morning to you. president trump in those remarks last night calling for american resolve against what he described as a vile enemy. the president saying he has spoken again with the prime minister theresa may expressing america's unwavering support. and it came after tweets that critics are describing as misdirected and misinformed. president trump late sunday in a benefit event from the theater delivering his first comments after the terrorist attack in london. >> america sends our thoughts, our prayers and her deepest sympathies to the victims of

this evil slaughter. this bloodshed must end. this bloodshed will end. >> reporter: this morning, the president's facing backlash for his unfiltered response after the violence. early sunday tweeting, we must stop being politically correct and get down to the business of security for our people. then, teeing off on london's mayor, sadiq khan, mid crisis, who encouraged his city to carry on. >> londoners will see an increased police presence today over the next few days. >> reporter: the president seizing on those words, mischaracterizing his words, mentioning the dead and wounded. mayor of london says there's no reason to be alarmed. the spokesman fired back, saying the mayor has more things to do than respond to donald trump's ill informed tweet. vice president al gore weighing in as well. >> i don't think a terrorist attack is a time to be divisive and criticize a mayor who is

trying to organize his city's response to this attack. >> reporter: the president's first tweet right after the attack, not sending his condolences, but touting his controversial travel ban. we need the courts to give us back our rights. we need the travel ban as an extra level of safety. with the trump administration appealing its case to the supreme court, democrats argue the ban is ineffective. >> there's no evidence to suggest that by banning muslims or banning muslims from a particular set of six countries, that we would make ourselves here in the united states safer. >> reporter: within the last few minutes, the president continuing his personal feud with london's mayor, just tweeting the following. he wrote, pathetic excuse by london mayor sadiq khan who had to think fast on his feet for no reason to be alarmed statement. media working hard to sell it. he's also going after the justice department, lashing out for them using the watered down version of what he describes as

the travel ban. >> peter, thank you. >> that brings us to kellyanne conway to joins us. good to see you. >> good morning. thank you. >> let's start with the series of tweets. just a matter of taste and judgment and accuracy, does the president owe the london mayor on apology for tweeting a politic attack hours after the terrorist incident and misleadingly quoting him. was that a mistake? >> it wasn't a political attack, savannah. as was buried in that report, one-sided report, here's the other side. that the president stands firm with the people of the u.k. he spoke to the prime minister of the entire country, theresa may, that same night. and yesterday, he announced his support for the u.k. people. i was in the ford gala when he said, we will get these people, bring them to justice. the bloodbaths have to stop. >> fair enough, kellyanne. >> let me finish. >> that was his first tweet. >> you make this about something other than what it's about.

>> i'm not going to allow a day and a half after terrorists did it again, whether they are isis inspired or isis directed, they are savage murderers. it's an evil slaughter. i'm not going to let him be seen as the perpetrator here. every time you said russia, imagine you said isis. every time you said twitter, imagine if you said terrorist. >> but kellyanne, in fairness, he's setting the agenda. he speaks. the reporter covers what he said. >> what did he say to theresa may? >> he did say that to theresa may. but most of his quotes had to do with either his own political concern, the travel ban, which he's had four more tweets about that this morning, and a misleading attack on london's mayor. my question was simply, does he owe an apology to london's mayor for quoting him in a misleading and inaccurate way? >> so we've got the 23rd isis-inspired or directed attack taking innocent lives, children in manchester, children in nice. we want to know, put some blame-worthiness on president

trump. i'm not going to allow it. here's what he's doing as president of the united states and commander in chief, standing firm, because an attack on london is an attack on american values, also. they're our greatest ally. we stand with them. we will do whatever it takes to help them moving forward. the state department, the president, everybody else involved, me, now, will express our condolences. we've expressed that publicly and he's expressed it privately to prime minister may as well. the obsession with covering everything he says on twitter and little of what he does as president -- >> that's his preferred method of communication with american people. >> that's not true. >> it's all he's done in three weeks. it is travel ban, it was presented to the american public as an opportunity to figure out what's going on, what's going wrong with immigration in this country. even though it's held up in the courts right now, what, if anything, is stopping the administration from using this

time to look at this travel ban? and if that's happening, when can we expect results? >> i believe the supreme court is set to take it up. and so, we'll get some kind of response there, probably in this calendar year. >> couldn't review while it's working its way through the courts, couldn't review immigration security while that's happening? >> this is what i'll say about the actual statute. i think people should look at the constitutional authority and statute authority including this one, to look at the poor vetting processes, the screening processes. we're talking about six countries that have been previously identified by the obama administration. they harbor or train or export terrorists. people don't have the right vetting and screening processes in place. and i also want to mention something else. we saw -- i saw "the telegraph" of the uk report just last night that one of these terrorists had two neighbors who reported him

to law enforcement. one was a friend of his, saying this man had been radicalized watching youtube videos and he was concerned about his future behavior. he now killed people. the second neighbor said this man, the same man, was trying to radicalize her children at a playground. that's what we should be talking about today, the fact that if you're going to see something and say something, it has to be followed by do something. and this president, through his travel ban, is trying to do something, to protect the people of this country. and we stand in solidarity with the uk and others who have been victims in nice, brussels, paris, stockholm. it goes on and on. we have to stop looking the other way, folks. we just do. this should be a nonpartisan issue with bipartisan solutions. >> you'll get agreement from this table on that, kellyanne. real quickly, james comey, former fbi director, set to testify thursday. real simple question. does the white house plan to exert executive privilege or any other maneuver to prevent this testimony? or would you say the president would like james comey to testify?

>> the president will make that final decision. if mr. comey does testify, we'll be watching with everything else. i would point out two things. most of washington, many of the democrats detested this man until donald trump fired him, which jim comey said in his good-bye letter, was the right of the president to do. secondly, jim comey, the last time he testified under oath, the fbi had to scurry and correct his testimony immediately because what he said was false. he was off by hundreds of thousands in terms of the e-mails between huma abedin and anthony weiner. and there were two classified in there apparently. and he was off by many, many, in terms of the classification. >> that's true what you just stated. but does the white house consider it a possibility that they would try to prevent the testimony by asserting executive privilege? is that an open possibility? >> the president will make that final decision. >> okay. >> the fact is, if he testifies, we'll all be watching. i think people should look at

the rod rosenstein memo again to see what the problem was in the department with fbi director james comey. he points out that the integrity and the morale were down. and he points out that comey had tried to usurp the power of the attorney general, loretta lynch, and he did, quote, textbook what you're not supposed to do by holding a press availability and announcing why they decided not to prosecute hillary clinton. >> indeed. and more to come on this. of course, the president supported those actions by comey at the time. kellyanne conway, thank you very much. >> thanks for having me. two weeks after the terrorist attack that struck her concert, ariana grande made an emotional return to the stage in manchester last night. the pop star leading an all-star benefit for the victims. nbc's kelly cobiella was there. kelly, it was quite the show. >> so emotional, craig. really hard to believe this was all organized in a matter of days. it came off without a hitch. lifting spirits here in manchester. a city showing its courage and bravery in the wake of another

[ chanting ] >> reporter: the show going on as planned with greater purpose. and even tighter security to help fans feel safe. you made it. >> i know. i'm really excited. >> 16-year-old kyra survived the blast that killed 22. at her home, she described the chaotic moments, as she struggled to get to an exit in her wheelchair. >> i couldn't breathe or anything. and i felt like i was going to die. >> reporter: but now, like others, kyra looks forward to replacing the bad memories with good ones. why do you want to be here so badly? >> just showing my support for everybody and showing we're

unbreakable. >> reporter: voices refusing to be silenced, with a message of solidarity, heard loud and clear. this concert really did raise spirits. and it also raised money, a lot of it. the red cross said they brought in nearly $3 million in donations online and through text messages during the concert. once they count the ticket sales, they hope to have another $1 million. all of that money going to support the victims and their families. craig, savannah. >> kelly, cobiella, good to see you. the show of solidarity last night, it was powerful. very special. >> i give them so much credit. and her going back to manchester and saying, here. and people having the courage to go to that concert and listen, says a lot. >> good for them. mr. roker, good to see you, sir. >> i'll tell you, you may not be feeling that way -- >> al. >> if you like the weather you got now, you'll be happy. if you don't like it, you won't be happy.

and now, the u.k. prime minister is renewing her call for u.s. tech companies to do more. this morning, the third major terrorist attack in three months is causing the british to take a hard look inward. >> there is, to be frank, too much tolerance of extremism in our country. >> reporter: and theresa may is pointing her finger at u.s.-based tech companies, not doing enough to weed out extremists in cyberspace. >> we cannot allow the technology the safe space it needs to breed. that's what the internet and the big companies that provide internet-based services provide. >> reporter: this local imam agrees. >> the present-day terrorists don't find radicalization on the mosques anymore. they find them on social media. >> reporter: google, twitter and facebook, say they've been cracking down on jihadist material for years. google writes they share the

government's commitment to ensuring terrorists do not have a voice online. twitter says it sus penpended 3 accounts for the promotion of terrorism. and facebook says we work aggressively to remove terrorist content from our platform. former secretary of state john kerry says while silicon valley has a responsibility, the blame lies with the terrorists. >> if you turn around and blame that message exclusively on the internet, we're making an enormous mistake. if we reach too far without being sensitive to our own values, we give them an extraordinary victory. >> reporter: digital privacy groups argue that giving up freedom online, it is dangerous to privacy. >> we're burning the village to save the village. >> reporter: while social media companies like facebook and twitter have cracked down over the last few years, many of the

but i repeat. we don't even have to do that. presidents come and go. and even the parties in power change. but the main political direction does not change. that's why, in the grand scheme of things, we don't care who is the head of the united states. we know more or less what is going to happen. and so, in this regard, even if we wanted to, it wouldn't make sense for us to interfere. >> there's been questions in america about donald trump's finances. he hasn't released his tax returns. there's been questions about a secret russian dossier, which she says is fake. but reports to have blackmail information generated by the russians. there's been questions about the kremlin and the trump campaign. all has americans asking, do you have something damages on our president? >> translator: well, this is just another load of nonsense. where do we get the information from? did we have a special

relationship with him? there was a time when he used to come to moscow. but i never met with him. we have a lot of americans that visit us. >> fascinating conversation. outside of the conversation about the alleged interference, what else struck you? what was the most intense part of the exchange? >> the exchange we had on the economic forum, when i had a chance to get into it with him. and we had a contentious exchange on syria, which is posted online, where he tried to suggest that assad did not use chemical weapons on his people. and i said, the world health organization has conducted the autopsies of the bodies. are you purporting to tell us it was fake? that the tapes we saw of the dying children are fake? and he said, there's another answer and you know it. and we got back and forth. it was the one time in all the exchange with him on stage and our one-on-one, where i thought, may have gotten a little too far out there. he may be upset.

maybe i pushed it too far. but in retrospect, i think it was fine. he did sit with us for the one-on-one after the fact. it ended fine. >> he denies the u.s. meddling in the election. but our intelligence agencies say it's not even a close call. he lied. >> well, to say -- this is the first time he said -- first of all, you guys do it, too. i said that sounds like a justification. he says every action has an opposite and equal reaction. that's close to, i ordered the code red, that we're going to get. >> when you're sitting in that room, was it just the two of you. what was it like? did he have a lot of people in the room? >> oh, yeah. by that point, i had spent so much time with him, it wasn't intimidating. i had felt i had gotten to know him a little bit. we had dinner at the palace. and we sat together for several hours. and i did the interview.

extremists who are already known to police. at least one of the suspects in the london bridge attack wasn't in hiding. in fact, he was reportedly featured in this british channel 4 documentary last year about islamic extremists unfurling a black islamic flag in a park. his face blurred because the suspect has not been officially identified by police. witnesses say he was one of the three men who drove a van over pedestrians on london bridge saturday night. an italian photographer was there, filming as the men started slashing victims. and police arrived to shoot them dead. >> i just saw the two guys getting shot. >> reporter: isis supporters are reveling in it, calling for more home grown terrorism on social media outlets with crude propaganda images like this one, menacing looking, but it shows the wrong bridge, tower bridge, not the one where the attack took place. still, prime minister theresa

accused by dozens of women of drugging them and engaging in unwanted sexual contact. he has denied all of those charges. but this case, this criminal case, is about just one incident and one woman. andrea constance says in 2004 while at his home he gave her a pill that incapacitated her and then molested her. cosby says everything that happened at his house that night was consensual. over the coming days, expect to see supporters on both sides. there will be multiple alleged victims in the courtroom, we spoke to one of them who says she's here to support andrea constant and sees this case as a symbol of all of those accusations. cosby will have his own supporters as well. his wife camille is expected to be here over the course of the trial and members of his tv family, including his tv wife, felicia rashad. and today keshia knight pulliam who played his youngest daughter, rudy, on the show. >> stephanie gosk for us in norristown, thank you.

police dash cam video shows the dramatic moments when a good samaritan jumped in to help during a medical emergency. take a look. dixon, illinois, police officers started following a blue car af light and then drifted on to the on coming lanes. a passing motorist noticed there was something wrong with the driver, he stopped his truck, jumped into the car's passenger side window, shifted the car into park, and yet turned out the driver was having a seizure. he will be okay. officers told the truck driver his heroic move looked like something from the dukes of hazard. >> imagine trying to walk up a sheet of glass for three feet. this man scaled el capitan, he became the first to conquer that sheer granite wall without ropes, without any safety gear. his daring achievement is being called the moon landing of his sport.

haven't been. >> social media has both defined our generation in wonderful ways and ruined us. >> to have that type of access to so many people and to say it doesn't affect your self-esteem or your image of yourself would be crazy. >> the survey we did about half agree that there's good and bad that comes with social media. 73% of them said they use the social media sites at least twice a day. and i imagine that leads to a lot of stress. in theory, it makes them manufactumore informed, more empowered and gives them better access to take action. >> social media helps with ak voe advocacy. and i follow the aclu, that tells me about things that are different causes or going around in the country. >> we want to feel like we're making change in the world, instead of sitting on our hands, watching the world go by. >> millennials care about

equality for millennials care about minority groups. we've been more exposed to different people, that it's hard not to watch someone's authentic self and not come to care about them. >> millennials are meaningful more tolerant than prior generations. 80% of them said they are -- if someone is being intolerant, they should say something about it. most important value, happiness. they define success in a different way. happiness is the outcome, as opposed to wealth, is a profound shift. >> we're constantly looking for our purpose in life. and we're going to be happiest when we find that. there's no better time to be alive than right now. all we're able to experience with technology, just access to everything, like, i'm so happy to be 23 in 2017 and having the whole world ahead of me.

high wa hayward. this started at 2:00 a.m. near jackson andç sycamore. they don't know how fighter started but it started in the attic. they were able to put fighter out quickly and everyone got out safely. we'll check the weather and traffic when we come back.

good monday morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. a lot of sunshine around the bay area. no fog as we get a live look outside at the golden great bridge. that shine will also heat up our temperatures today. up to 88 degrees in concord, 85 degrees in livermore. san jose up to 83 degrees and san francisco seeing the upper 60s there. over the next several days, our temperatures will start to take a dip and we'll have a chance of rain by the end of the week. starting out on thursday afternoon into early friday morning. temperatures go from the low 80s into the upper 70s for the week and into the weekend. travel time toward the bay

bridge must improved over the last half hour. 45 minutes. bait bridge itself has problems. so does the san mateo bridge. both are cleared but you do see slowing near san leandro. 237 tied up lanes for almost an hour until they could clear up this wreck. all lanes are clear. the buildup southbound toward fremont. we're looking at the san mateo bridge on the map. the live look shows you it's just starting to move a little better in the last few minutes. we'll have another local news update for you coming up in half an hour. see you then.

>> whoa. >> that's so good. >> good morning, girls. >> nice to have you here. this is everyone's nightmare, when you think, would i swim with sharks? and it happened. what was -- then, like the fact that it's under water. what was it like filmi ining something where you're just under water the whole time? >> exhausting. it was a rigorous shoot. and i think mandy and i had no idea what we had gotten ourselves into. but by the end of it, we had a real affinity for the water, i think. and we got used to it and loved it. but it was tough. it was really tough. >> 90% of this movie takes place under water. that was compelling to us as actors, the physical and emotional challenge of shooting under water. as much as it is about sharks, it's a story of survival. and to me, the scarier premise is being trapped at the bottom of the motion, with a limited amount of air. it's this race against the clock. >> did you have scuba experience before you did this? >> no.

>> we had a crash course. >> an afternoon in a swimming pool in los angeles. we did two open-water dives. we were on our way to shoot the film. >> this movie, it is absolutely fantastic. "my best friend's wedding," "noting hill," and this is right up there with it. let me tell you why. two sisters on vacation. one is having problems with her marriage or whatever. you can relate to it. but you hold this movie on your own. you make this happen, right. then, how would i handle it? if i was under water like that. what would you do? completely out of control. all these extenuating factors and circumstances, layer upon layer of problem after problem. we're trapped at the bottom of the ocean. we have an hour's worth of air. >> we think we know where the movie is going to go. >> we're not sure. >> you're filming, how often would you come up -- you know, while you're -- to change air tanks and stuff. >> we would go down with an

entire tank. and we would surface again when the tank was almost finished. >> about 30, 40 minutes. >> an hour, hour and a half, depending how much you're exerti exerting ourselves in the water. four to five oxygen tanks. seven weeks under water. >> did you have to worry about decompression and all that stuff? >> yes. >> because a movie had never been done with actors spent so much time consecutive under water, they didn't know what the affects would be. >> that's crazy. i scuba dive and i would never do anything like that. >> we were also in a tank. we were only about 20 feet under water. not like we were shooting -- >> didn't look like it. >> it's believable. when people go on trips, you do that. you get in a cage. you'll only be down for a few minutes. you get to see nature under water and you come back up. this takes a turn for the worse. >> i have done live shots under water, trying to talk in a scuba

tank. the muscle control in your mom a stomach and getting everything not to sound breathy. was that a challenge? >> it was a lot. it was a learning experience for the two of us. we had never -- obviously, i had some experience in a tank. but acting under water is different. >> trying to cry with a mask on is really odd. you can't wipe your tears. >> your mask starts to fog up. >> don't die. before you leave, i feel like our viewers would attack us, if we didn't ask you, really quickly -- "this is us." we're going to find out how jack died. >> we're going back to work in about six weeks. and i've been told that early on in the season, there will, perhaps, be some answers. >> perhaps. >> perhaps. >> exactly. >> got eaten by a shark. >> exactly. >> he was in a tank. went under water. and they didn't fix the top. >> right. >> end, scene. you guys are great. >> thank you so much.
