lorenzo southbound 880 as you're heading down past 238, right near the interchange, in fact, reports of a crash. no lanes blocked, but five vehicles were involved and it sounds like they're on the right shoulder and the center divide. this will be a distraction, and may have been an argument that started there. chp is going to head out there and lend a hand. we'll track that closely as we are starting to see more cars on the road. no major delays. travel times for the bay bridge is looking good right now. >> thank you. we start right now with breaking news out of iran. there have been multiple attacks in that country's capital of tehran. it's left several people dead, dozens more wounded. >> and a possible hostage situation could be happening right now. iran's state run news agency reports several attackers stormed the parliament building. there are report at least five people have been killed there. as that attack was happening, another group attacked a shrine, killing two people. get to some local news now. new this morning, authorities in

the east bay are investigating a deadly hit and run thattened late last night. it was along the port chicago highway in bay point. chp says a man and his dog were struck and killed and that the victim is a white male about 40 years old. so far, not many descriptions of the kind of car that might have been involved in the hit and run. >> an unthinkable crime in the east bay. police say a stranger approached a toddler in a park and drugged the child with methamphetamine. today, that suspect is expected to face a judge. >> bob redell is live in berkeley with details on what is an unfathomable situation for parents and reaction this morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, sam and laura. that suspect is scheduled to enter a plea in an oakland courtroom at 9:00 this morning on charges that she drugged a child here at people's park in berkeley. law enforcement tells us her name is siadina thomas.

she's a 36-year-old woman who apparently lives here in the park. people's park is home to a number of homeless people. this past monday, a 2-year-old boy was here at the park with his nanny. a witness tells us he saw thomas force the child to take this illicit drug. >> the baby and the nanny were playing on the playground. and the lady walked up to the baby and stuck her finger in her mouth and gave the baby some methamphetamine. >> the nanny frantically searched the boy's mouth, saw it was empty. but still called uc berkeley police who arrested thomas and took her to a psych facility. police tell us en route, she admitted to putting the methamphetamine in the boy's mouth. the boy was taken to the hospital where police say it was confirmed he did swallow the drug. he is recovering. reporting live here in berkeley, bob redell, today in the bay. >> we're happy to hear the little boy is going to be okay. thank you very much. happening now, we go live to washington.

a lot going on this morning. let's start here. we're learning of new developments in the russia investigation. a bombshell report claiming that president trump tried to get the nation's top intelligence official to shut down the investigation. that official, the director of national intelligence, dan coats, happens to be testifying today. that's not everything. today in the bay's tracie potts joining us live in washington with what's going on right now, including word just in that president trump has selected the next director of the fbi? >> he selected who he would like to be the next director of the fbi. former justice department official christopher ray, who by the way, was also the attorney for new jersey's governor chris christie in the bridgegate scandal. that's the man who president trump tweeted moments ago has impeccable credentials and should head the fbi, which of course, is heading the russia investigation. those new questions that you talked about, sure to come up as the director of national intelligence goes before

lawmakers for questioning today. this washington post report is fueling new questions for today's hearings. it claims president trump asked dan coats, the director of national intelligence, to lean on then fbi director james comey to back off the russia investigation. >> it's hard to avoid the conclusion that the president's decision to remove director comey was related to this investigation. >> in a statement, coats says he has never felt pressured by the president or anyone else in the administration to influence any intelligence matters or ongoing investigations. coats testifies today along with the deputy attorney general, acting fbi director, and head of the national security agency, all facing questions about president trump. >> there could be other skeletons that come out that he's not even aware of. that's one of the big fears in the white house right now. >> this was acting fbi director andrew mccabe at his last hearing. >> i can't comment on any conversations the director may

ghost ship warehouse fire is being trance fsported to the sa rita jail. we learned almenna's wife and his lawyers will be holding a news conference on friday to talk about this case. almena, the master tenant of the warehouse and also the manager of the building, was arrested on monday along with harris. their arrests come after a six-month-long investigation. each of them is facing 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. >> 5:06. the fbi has been conducting exercises on san francisco bay for weeks now. today's training is called operation sea sick. it's to prepare local law enforcement on how to handle a maritime terrorist attack. it's a two-day event. it starts this morning at 8:00. it focuses on preparedness, response, and recovery efforts. several agencies like oakland pd, fire, and hospital are taking part in the exercise. >> nobody really likes to clean up the mess from somebody else's party. that's why san mateo county

leaders are reportedly putting an end to late night parties at a peninsula beach. the mercury news reporting the supervisors yesterday approved restrictions to a beach in half moon bay. leaders say too many late night beach parties left heaps of trash behind. that beach is now going to close at nightfall. the ban covers things like fires, alcohol, and littering. >> get ready to clean up the confetti. game three of the nba finals now just hours away. as we take a live look at oracle arena. the warriors won't be there tonight. excited fans may be in attendance. game three of the nba finals may be tipping off in cleveland tonight, similar to the past few years we'll see watch parties across the bay area. the biggest one will be right there at the oracle arena. the parking lot opens at 4:30. and then there's the watch party for free in san francisco. that's at civic center plaza. there will be a jumbotron in front of city hall.

it is 5:12. we start out this morning with some mostly clear skies for the south bay. taking a live look outside at san jose with a little bit of light in the sky. as we go throughout the morning, we will have some sunshine in willow glen. the temperature at 63 degrees. rising into the low 70s early afternoon, and mid 70s today, but then the clouds start to

move in. i'm watching the clouds on the satellite imagery. we'll look at it together coming up in five minutes. and we're looking at a little bit of a delay. just starting up for 580. everything else in the tri-valley moves well. i'm going to tell you about a new crash i'm checking out that is over there. >> keep us updated with that, thank you very much. >> 5:13, and tourists are back at the notre dame cathedral in paris this morning, and so, too, are heavily armed police officers after what happened yesterday. you're looking at video here after a police officer was slightly injured in an attack where a man wielding a hammer who also had kitchen knives on him was shot by a police officer. there are reports that the suspect screamed, this is for syria. as for life in paris, it continues. american tourists there say they're not changing their plans out of fear. >> what has happened all over the world, yes, but that doesn't mean we stopped. we had our plans well in place in february, and.

>> things had happened before we made our plans. we wanted to go and didn't want that to stop us. >> the attacker right now is in the hospital. we don't know specifics about his condition, but investigators are trying to figure out if he was inspired by terror groups or acting alone or both. >> we're learning a piece of evidence about the terror attack in manchester has tied to the bay area. investigators say they found this sports bag near the scene at an ariana graunnde concert. that's a san francisco 49ers logo on the bag. the team has released a statement saying the 49ers were disgusting to learn the gym bag bearing the name of the team was found as evidence in association with the horrific attack. our hearts and prayers are with the innocent people affected by this tragedy. 22 people died in the attack. some pretty alarming accusations right against a bay area uber driver.

he's accused of sexual battery against a passenger. police say that this man, leonard baker, sexually battered a female passenger who had just ordered a ride from oakland to morogga. police were able to arrest him based on information from the victim and also from moraga's traffic cameras. he was booked into jail. he has since posted bail. police are still investigating the case and asking for the public's help trying to piece together more information. >> in the meantime, while we talk about uber, a lot of firings going on at the company's headquarters. >> scott, 20 people lost their jobs, accused of misbehavior. >> this comes after two internal investigations. one led by an outside legal team. one led by former u.s. attorney eric holder. uber had a long reputation as a tough place for women to work, and of course, it was embarrassed by that internet posting by a former engineer. the company announced it was dismissing 20 people. sources say for harassment and other offenses related to

retaliation. these firings directly related to the report from outside legal counsel hired by uber to investigate. the second investigation led by eric holder will release a report next week. that investigation will have recommendations about what uber should do next to try to fix its toxic work place. >> there's also the recently added section. >> uber also says it hire boz saint james from apple. she will serve as the chief brand officer. she tells variety magazine she's well aware of the problems at uber and hopes to become an agent for change. michelle le has resigned as head of the u.s. patent and trademark office. the formal google executive was appointed by president obama and stayed, at least on paper, while president trump took over. there had been confusion for weeks as to whether she was really there still.

the patent office delisted her from the website weeks ago. she's now officially resigned. this becomes another position in the trump administration that's unfilled. a list put together by "the washington post" says 431 major positions have not been filled because there's been no nominee named. a few minutes ago, the president did tweet he would nominate christopher ray to head the fbi. >> wall street to watch. an election in the uk. and then of course, big drama in washington tomorrow, as comey testifies. all networks will break into programming for that. that's very unusual. the dow fell 47 points yesterday. nasdaq down 20. >> all right, a blockbuster comey hearing. we have been talking about this for days now. interesting to see what comes out of it. thanks, scott. right now, a look at a cincinnati police officer in action on a busy highway. >> oh, deer. >> exactly. precisely. everything in the category of

that we'll have rain before we head into the weekend. so it will be a nice little shower moving through. that's tomorrow. today, we're all dry. and here's a look at what you're going to see as you head out the door. looking at the sunrise happening in less than 30 minutes in the south bay. and it's 55 degrees as you head out the door now, as you head over toward the tri-valley, all clear. the temperatures there at 52. then you go up towards the north bay and we're seeing the low clouds there, and it's 49 degrees. we can see them hovering over san francisco as we get a look at the temperatures there. at 52 degrees. and the east bay looking live at the fremont camera. it's 57 degrees. today's high temperatures heading into the mid 70s. it's going to feel very nice. a little cooler than it was yesterday. some fresh breezes. the only change, we'll see more clouds moving in. oakland will up to 68 degrees. if you're planning to hit the links at half moon bay, we'll see some of the fog clearing out by 9:00. it will be a cool start. we'll see the high temperatures

today reaching into the low 60s. up to 62 degrees. then here's the i was talking about. looking at the satellite imagery with this rare storm system moving in for this time of year. then you can see how large it is as we see it expanding out into the pacific. even some light showers starting to reach closer to far northwestern california. that moving into the bay area by early tomorrow morning. look at the timeline here. here we are at 8:30, and we see some scattered showers moving in during the morning commute for tomorrow into the north bay. and a lot of the rain kind of weakening and becoming lighter as it moves into the south bay and east bay. but we are still going to have a chance of seeing a few of those sprinkms throughout the day. clearing out by noon on friday. a look at how much rain we could see the potential of getting about a quarter inch of renan santa rosa, napa, and lighter amounts once again, less than a tenth to maybe a quarter of an inch of rain for parts of the east bay.

we'll be watching that for you. our temperatures reaching into the mid 60s in san francisco for the next several days. inland areas going from 76 degrees today to those showers moving in, some mid 70s tomorrow. and a very nice and dry weekend ahead with highs in the upper 70s for sunday. and mike now, you're looking at the altamont corridor. >> i am. we have your traditional build starting way out there for westbound 580. smaller crashes including one in san lorenzo, yes, a new location, san lorenzo, is off the shoulder, and now over the washington exit. not a major problem, but still tracking that one. this one by the altamont corridor, west 580 at grant line road does block your slow lane. that's where 205 and 580 merge, and also marking this area where we continue to track earlier fire. it is in the area. you might see some glow. again, a distraction, but no major problems. let's take a live look out there

new video to show you this morning at 5:25. a seemingly senseless rand vandal attack in georgia. the man who just stomped on that windshield probably didn't know there was a camera inside. the woman says she was leaving a parking lot in atlanta and that's when it all happened. she drove away quite frightened, but she handed the video over to police. she didn't seem to know who that person was. >> probably thought she was being targeted for something. >> 5:25. a pretty unusual criminal trial playing out in massachusetts.

it all centers around a young woman accused of encouraging her boyfriend to take his own life. michelle carter faces involuntary manslaughter charges, prosecutors say she actually encouraged her then 17-year-old boyfriend to take his life with text messages that bordered on abusive. the key question here, can someone legally be guilty when another person chooses to take their life? >> the cause of his death was not michelle carter. the cause of his death was a suicide. >> she used him as a pawn in her sick game of life and death. >> as you can see, a legal conundrum. experts say a conviction may be too much to ask for. first, she waived her right to a jury trial, meaning a judge is deciding her fate. even though 40 states do have laws against assisting suicide, massachusetts is not one of them. new details now on a story we brought you yesterday morning. a controversial sex education curriculum was on the agenda last night at a palo alto school

room. where they say drugs were also involved. happened at about 4:00 a.m. at the travel on market street. officers say a man was struck several times with a hammer. they say he also suffered a drug overdose and is now in critical condition. officers handcuffed the second man who was also in the room. police say a woman at the scene suffered undisclosed injuries. they're not saying if the woman is under arrest. 5:32 this morning. and all new, police in antioch are investigating a deadly stabbing right now. this happened a little after 8:00 last night at west 19th street. right near antioch high school. investigators say a man was stabbed in the torso and ultimately succumbed to his injuries. this marks antioch's fifth homicide of the year. >> changes could soon come to your commute. san trans will vote on elimin e eliminating some routes. >> not enough people on the route. kris sanchez joining us with the reason they're considering

cutting back here. >> you just said the reason, sam. it's because not nch people are riding these particular lines. i want you to take a look, though, at what we're talking about. these are san trans routes 1143 and 89. they're the system's lowest perform routes with four trips daily and about five people per trip. now, compare that with the average of about 19 riders per trip on other lines. these are so-called community service routes that don't connect to rails. and only run on school days. route 11 serves two schools in daly city. route 43 serves two schools a library and a community center. route 89 serves an elementary school in atherton. samtrans also has two or three other routes that also serve riders along those same lines so the riders won't be stranded, although their commute might be a little more complicated. if you or your student uses these lines to get to and from school or the library, join the conversation. join me on my facebook page,

tell me what this impact will have on your day. you can find me on twitter as well. the transit board is going to make their decision likely tonight. and the changes would be effective on august 6th. in san carlos, kris sanchez, today in the bay. >> thank you so much. >> 5:34. the mother suspected of abandoning her 5-year-old daughter near ocean beach surrendered to police. police say the woman shoved the little girl out of a stopped car on a great highway on monday night. we're learning more details about this. she then drove off with her 1-year-old son still in the car. police say that the girl was from arkansas and paramedics saw what was happening and quickly took her to. parents at ocean beach are grateful she's alive. >> with them being curious, they're going to go close to the water. so luckily there were people onhand and they saved the little girl. >> police right now are in touch with the father of the little girl after he called a phone that she had. as for the woman, she's now in

police custody and both of her children are in protective custody. 5:34. a warning for people who walk their dog near golden gate park. watch out for coyotes. reports of coyotes acting aggressively towards at least two dogs. officials say it's pupping season which usually runs through the summer. there's a well known den in the area and the adults are likely protecting their young. experts say be aware of your surroundings when you're out walking. >> a real issue for the city of san jose. now they're tackling gang activity and youth violence through a series of town hall meetings. the 1st is tonight at 6:00 at the roosevelt community center. several city leaders will be there. there will be several more town halls throughout the month. >> 5:35. new this morning, voters in santa rosa have shot down an effort to enact new rent control law. measure c would have limited annual rent increases to no more than 3%. it sprang from a referendum that followed a measure aproved by

supervisors last summer. the measure lost by about five points. >> later today, the vta is expected to give an update on some of the work being done to complete b.a.r.t.'s silicon valley extension. they're holding a live web sem ainfrastructure at noon. they installed and tested new software for the extension that would connect fremont to the silicon valley. >> you were talking mass transit. b.a.r.t. is reporting no more delays, but a reported delay for vta. this is unusual. we don't have problems with the trains this time of morning, and we haven't heard of a door malfunction causing this issue. but that's what's reported. southbound trains on that line may have a ten-minute delay. an unusual declaration from vta. sounds like an issue with one of the doors there. meanwhile, throughout the south bay, no problem as far as any unexpected slowing there.

sunday. but rounding out a beautiful weekend. let's check out some events going on. on saturday, the san mateo county fair opens. it starts with a parade during the morning, and we'll be at 61 degrees. make sure you bring the sun block and drink a lot of water, even though our temperatures will be very comfortable, reaching into the low 70s by early afternoon. great weather for that. also for heading up to healdsburg for the jazz festival. that will be ongoing, and the last day will be on sunday, and it will be in the low 70s throughout the evening. dropping back to 60 degrees, and if you'ring to head to the sierra, we're still doing very well with the snow pack here. here's a live look out there as the sun rises. we're at 205% of average for the snow pack this time of year. maybe you want to head out there. we'll have a chance of rain on friday, anding into the low 50s, and even 48 degrees by the end of the weekend. so bring a coat.

to kill his bay area based doctors. s arrested him last week in san jose as he was driving from his home in the central valley. the plot unraveled when police say they found notes at the suspect's house telling his family that he planned on killing the doctors who he blamed for his deteriorating health. >> we feel pretty confident of what his intent and that if we hadn't been able to in a time sensitive way coordinate our efforts, that we be investigating at least one homicide if not multiple homicides. >> police say that chen was found with loaded guns in his car and a mask along with a list of the doctors' addresses. we should warn you the video out of canada that you're about to see could be disturbing. you see two men there, one from arizona eating lunch at niagara falls when out of nowhere, a lexus comes crashing through the window. the arizona man was pushed about 15 feet. you see it happen there. he was eventually pinned against

a wall. somehow both men walked away unhurt. the 86-year-old woman driving was not impaired so she was not charged. >> how he's okay after that i have no idea. >> 5:44. hayward reportedly comes to bay area's latest jurisdiction to adopt sank we city policies. east bay times reporting that late last night, council members voted to declare hayward a sanctuary city, meaning it's not going to assist in enforcing immigration law. state lawmakers are also considering making california a sanctuary state. all this happened last night, but before that ever took place, city of hayward ignited some controversy with this tweet that was intended to promote last night's meeting. it used by most accounts a poorly crafted pun. let's taco bout it. many call it inappropriate and culturally insensitive,

especially giving the meeting was about immigrants, many of whom were from mexico. they did try to back pedal which left some supporters relieved. >> we're glad that the mayor and council repudiate those expressions of hatred against immigrants. >> the city's social media team did issue a series of follow-up apology tweets. >> washington will grind to a halt tomorrow as former fbi director james comey testifies before the senate investigation. >> the nation will be glued to this. that will be the most dangerous moment yet for the trump administration. >> this is where we may hear claims of obstruction of justice. it could put the president's office in jerpardy. all three major networks are planning to cut into regular programming tomorrow. something that has only happened a few times before, including the anita hill hearing and watergate. comey fired after the president

decided the russian investigation by the fbi was in the president's words, made up. sources tell nbc comey will not explicitly accuse the president of obstruction, but his testify may show evidence of that. we do expect the former fbi director will deny he ever told the president he was not under investigation. president trump claims comey told him three separate times that he was not. a few moments ago, the president announced he would nominate christopher ray as the next head of the fbi. he has worked assistant attorney general in the past and was part of the team that prosecuted enron. he's currently in private practice. he was chris christie's private attorney in the bridgegate investigation. now, there's some pretty big names that are talking to the senate today. including the man at the center of the comey firing, assistant attorney general rod rosenstein. he's the top man in the justice department investigation because attorney general jeff sessions has recused himself.

other big names today, the director of national intelligence, dan coats, rosenstein as well, michael rogers and the acting director of the fbi, andrew mccabe. the former head of intelligence, james clapper, just spoke to the australia press club a short time ago. that video just coming in to msnbc. he said what we're looking at today is far worse than what we saw with the nixon administration. >> i have to say though that i think you compare the two, that watergate pales, really, in my view, compared to what we're confronting now. >> he said that just moments ago. again, james comey's testimony comes tomorrow. nbc bay area will carry it live on air and at nbcbayarea.com. we analyze everything the president is doing, including tweets, speeches, and these days, lots of testimony.

see the clouds along the coast. the temperature now at 54 degrees. we're going to see the high temperatures today a little cooler than it was yesterday. we'll be in the upper 70s for the tri-valley and the south county, and 76 degrees in san jose. palo alto up to 74. santa rosa looking at a high of 75. you're looking out the window. you're seeing some thin clouds around the south bay, and as you're getting ready for the day, we bring it in to let you know it will be a great day for long sleeves and pants. now, we have had some short sleeves and shorts weather, but now those temperatures come down, maybe you feel more comfortable wearing some long sleeves today. especially afz we get this fairly cool start. we're going to see the clouds starting to move in out ahead of this system. we're seeing a little bit of light rain. that's going to be moving into far northwestern california as it moves into the bay area, here's a look at the timeline. early tomorrow morning, starting at 6:30, we start to see pockets of rain moving into santa rosa.

this affects tomorrow morning's commute. and moving in to san francisco by 8:30 in the morning, now the rain will become lighter and become more spotty as it moves into the south bay and east bay. but we will keep that chance of rain in the forecast, and then some clearing by friday afternoon. temperature wise, we keep it in the 60s for san francisco. that chance of rain tomorrow, and then all dry for the weekend. inland areas also seeing more of the same. some mid 70s for today and tomorrow. and then as we head into the weekend it still stays nice and comfortable with a bit of a warmup early next week. what's happening with the car fire in san francisco? >> the report came in, a very big concern, car fire, safety for all. let's look at the sensors. nothing unusual as we take you up towards san francisco. this may be an issue. north wnd 101. reports of the car fire. you do see the southbound slowing. we tend to see more traffic in that direction. any smoke may be a distraction there. sounds like all the activity is off to the shoulder, but i'm

has been recovered. javier thomas was walking with his girlfriend over a bridge when the attack began on saturday night. on london bridge. thomas is from france. two other french citizens were killed in that attack. five japanese workers were exposed to high levels of radiation when a bag containing highly radioactive material apparently broke. there are now questions whether the workers were properly protected. a lot more news ahead. stick around.

was spewing islamophobic rants an twot teenage girls on the train. court documents indicate he confessioned to the stabbings in the back of a police car. he was recorded saying, quote, i'm happy now. i can rest easy. >> also happening today, you might see smoke in one south bay city. worry, it's just a fire training drill. the san jose department doing a live training burn today and tomorrow at a park off bernal road. crews will be out from about 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. both of those days. >> a phone scam warning in the east bay. livermore police department says two people were victimized by a jury duty phone scam. the scammer called pretending to be with the alameda county sheriff's department. they tell the victim if they don't report for jury duty, they'll be arrested, but they can pay a fine to avoid arrest. the victim is told to get a prepaid reloadable debit card and give the information to the scanner over the phone. they say the courts will never
