the president revealed his pick for a new fbi director. >> here is how he did it. he was on twitter this morning saying i will nominate christopher a.wran, a man of impeccable credentials. wray would take over for fired fbi director james comey who will be testifying before the senate intelligence committee tomorrow. that's all part of the russia investigation. we've got this covered starting with nbc justice correspondent pete williams. pete, good morning to you. what do we know about christopher wray? >> at age 50, one of the younger nominees the president considered. unlike others, he has law enforcement experience in the local and national levels. graduate of yale and yale law school. after private practice he joined the u.s. attorney's office early in his career and then came to washington to work in the justice department in various senior capacities. he then served as assistant attorney general in charge of

the criminal division from 2003 to 2005. that was under george w. bush. during that time, his immediate boss was the deputy attorney general, and that person was james comey. since then he was in private practice, recently in the headlines serving as defense lawyer for governor of new jersey chris christie during the bridgegate scandal. the white house says the only finalist was john pistole, the former number two at the fbi and then administrator of the tsa. >> pete, that's the classic resume for an fbi director. what do you know about what went on behind the scenes as the president was trying to make this pick? >> it is not an easy job to fill. you might ask yourself who would want this. we know the white house talked to at least a dozen people and some of them bowed out. for one thing, accepting this nomination is making a ten-year commitment. that's the nominal term for the fbi director, assuming they

don't get fired. robert mueller, in fact, served a total of 12 years. fbi and justice department career people like the fact that chris wray has federal law enforcement experience, he worked closely with local fbi agents in atlanta and then at headquarters as the assistant attorney general. i think people are relieved the president didn't choose a political figure. now chris wray's main task in his confirmation hearing will be convincing the senate he'll be independent of the white house and the president who nominated him. then, if confirmed, he'll have the delicate dance of figuring out his exact role in the russia investigation being run by robert mueller, who knows more about the fbi than probably any other living person. >> a big job. pete williams, thank you. new developments. a report then fbi director james

comey asked attorney general jeff sessions to keep him from being alone with the president ever again, after all this happened after a tense white house meeting. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is at the white house with that part of the story. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. insiders are casting tomorrow's comey testimony as the political equivalent of the super bowl. beginning momentarily right now in here in washington, some of the nation's top law enforcement and intelligence officials are going to testify before that same senate intelligence committee. it comes amid new questions about the lengths the president went to try to shut down the russia investigation and new reports that the president's attorney general even offered to resign. 24 hours ahead of james comey's senate testimony, director of national intelligence dan coats takes his turn in the spotlight. he told associates that trump asked him to intervene with then

fbi director comey to get the investigation off the russia, and michael flynn. it reports that the president asked everyone to leave the room except for coats and mike pompeo. coats says he has never felt pressured by the president or anyone. also this morning, "the new york times" reports the day after president trump asked comey to end his investigation into flynn, comey told attorney general jeff sessions he did not want to be left alone again with the president. while comey believed the attorney general should protect the fbi from white house influence, the times reports sessions couldn't guarantee the president wouldn't try to talk to comey alone again. when asked about comey's upcoming testimony, the president said only this. >> i wish him luck. >> reporter: sources close to comey tell nbc news, when he testifies thursday, he's likely to detail a pattern of what he

believed were inappropriate conversations with the president about the russia investigation, but he's not expected to accuse president trump of obstruction of justice. white house aides and the president's allies are already looking to contain any potential damage. one pro-trump group set to air this add attacking comey's credibility. >> james comey, just another d.c. insider only in it for himself. >> reporter: late tuesday the president's son eric lashing out at those who oppose his father's administration. >> i've never seen hatred like this. to me they're not even people. it's so, so sad. moverality is just gone, morals out the window. >> reporter: new details about the president and his attorney general. a source close to the administration describing trump's huge level of frustration with sessions, not just for in his eyes unnecessarily recusing himself from the russia inquiry. but monday morning quarterbacking other things. sean spicer refusing to say

whether the president has lost confidence in sessions. >> i have not had a discussion with him about that. >> reporter: again, multiple reports ha the attorney general jeff sessions offered to resign at one point in recent months after his relationship with the president grew increasingly tension. "the new york times" reporting that sessions told president trump he needed the freedom to do his job. the department of justice is declining the comment. the white house is declining any questions about the russia investigation to the president's outside lawyer. matt and savannah. >> shaf vannah will travel to washington and join chuck and lester tomorrow morning for james comey's testimony. we'll have special live coverage on the nbc stations starting at 10:00 eastern time. this morning, another big breaking story. a pair of deadly attacks in iran's capital. gunmen stormed the building in tehran this morning and then blew himself up.

in a second attack, a suicide bomber at the shrine of the ayatollah khomeini. these were the first terrorist incidents in tehran in more than a decade. isis has reportedly claimed responsibility. let's get more with nbc's national security analyst jeremy bash who has been keeping an eye on this situation. >> jeremy, as savannah said, is a rarity. we don't see attacks like this inside iran, especially tehran very often. if this is isis, what message are they send? >> they're trying to attack the shia capital in tehran as part of a broader regional conflict between the sunni of isis and the shia of iran. they've been fighting not only in that part of the middle east, but in syria. >> the question is beyond the adversarial nature of their relationship, now that there's actual wli terrorism in the borderers of iran itself, the

capital of iran, what retaliation might there be? >> the concern of u.s. officials is that iran would retaliate not just against isis elements, but against the saudi arabian government, a key u.s. partner in the region. this could be a spark that could ignite a major regional conflict. >> a lot of people watching this one closely. jeremy, thank you very much. we've got dramatic new video to show you this morning of a brazen attack on police outside the famed notre dame cathedral in paris. the suspect armed with a hammer and knives shouting "this is for syria" before he was shot and wounded. nbc's keir simmons has that story. >> reporter: the attack, terrifying and sudden. the assailant armed with a hammer, launches at a police officer. the crowd panics in the security camera footage as another officer opens fire. tourists left fleeing, the assailant shot in the leg, surrounded.

pennsylvania. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. andrea constand is back on the stand today. you can be sure her story will be picked apart again by a defense team determined to undermine her credibility. constand says she saw cosby as a friend, as a mentor and he nodded yes when she asked if the pills he was about to give her >> reporter: outside the courthouse we caught up with her civil attorney. >> how did it go today? >> i thought she exited immense composure and bravery. it's very marred to talk about intimate details like that in a room full of people. >> reporter: constand told the jury soon after bill cosby gave her three blue pills in his home in 2004, i began to slur my words. i said to cosby, i see two of you. constand says he moved her to a

couch, telling the court in a shaky voice, i was trying to get my hands to move and my legs to move, but i was frozen. unable to fight back, she say, cosby molested her, adding, i wanted it to stop. the defense team will focus a lot of attention on what happened next. constand maintained contact with cosby, at least 72 poen calls. >> mr. cosby, how are you feeling today. >> reporter: even accepting tickets for her family to attend one of his shows. she told the jury, i did not have the courage at the time to tell my family. so i just went along with it. after a year she shared her story with her mother. the defense team wanted to know why she looked into civil attorneys before telling the police. i wasn't familiar with who i needed to call, constand said. i reached out to them for guidance and to get advice. dozens of women have accused cosby of inappropriate sexual contact. the comedian denies all the allegations. after court on tuesday, he least

morgan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. now, 20 years old, michelle carter is sitting trial for allegedly encouraging her own boyfriend to take his life. so, the question facing the judge today, can one person be held legally responsible for the suicide of another. an emotional first day in court. the heartbroken loved ones of conrad roy, wiping away tears a few feet away from michelle carter, accused of encouraging roy of killing himself. >> this case is a suicide case. it is not a homicide. >> she pushed him to kill himself sooner rather than later. and she mocked him when he chose to delay his death. >> reporter: prosecutors say carter coerced roy to end his life by text messages. they displayed disturbing texts, that the 17-year-old sent roy before his death. tonight is the night, she wrote. it's now or never. roy texts, i'm overthinking.

carter responded, i thought you wanted to do this. the time is right. you're ready. you just need to do it. roy drove to this parking lot and filled his pickup truck with carbon monoxide. when he left the car, carter texted a friend. i told him to get back in. i couldn't have him live that way. >> she assisted and devised and advised and planned his suicide. she reasoned him out of his reservations. >> reporter: if convicted, carter faces up to 20 years in prison. her fate, now in the hands of a single judge after waiving her right to a jury. is manslaughter a reach? >> i think it's a stretch. prosecutors have to prove that she, michelle carter, recklessly caused the death of conrad roy. did she cause his death when he was alone in the car 30 miles away. >> reporter: carter's defense says she should go free, claiming she tried to help roy. but gave in by supporting his plan.

>> the evidence will show it was mr. roy who had a plan to take his own life. >> reporter: the tragedy, affecting roy's mother, who took the stand tuesday, at one point, fighting back tears. >> he would say, hey, mom, can we talk? >> reporter: a devastating case where the judge must decide if words speak louder than actions. 40 states have laws criminalizing assisted or coerced suicide. but massachusetts isn't one of them. so, today, the defense is going to try to prove that roy acted alone. and they're expected to bring michelle carter's friends to the stand. matt? savannah? >> morgan radford, thank you very much. >> that's going to be a fascinating verdict to see what they rule on. >> it's interesting. if you read the text messages, the moral blame seems clear. but whether there's legal responsibility is at the heart of the trial. let's get a look at today's weather, from dylan, in for al. >> we're looking at a warm-up, actually. temperatures will get close to

[ cheers and applause ] ==vo== the woman accused of sticking methamphetamin a very good morning to you. it is 8:26. the woman accused of putting methamphetamines in a toddler's mouth is scheduled to appear in court at that on attempted murder charges. police arrested the 36-year-old monday in berkeley's peoples park. investigators say she's homeless. she walked up to a boy and placed something in his mouth. the boy's nanny quickly checked and nothing was there. she called the police who arrested thomas. doctors confirm the toddler was given methamphetamine and he is in the hospital recovering. let's check the morning commute with mike. how are things rolling out there, or not? >> in some places not so quickly. i'm sure everybody would like it

i had a lot of fun putting it together. >> i love your recipes. talk about what we're making today. we're making barbecue whiskey sliders. >> this is the kind of thing i like to throw together, if i'm cooking for my boys or a house full of people for a big football game. it's so easy. it's just throw it all together. let it simmer away. and people can serve up themselves. >> looking at the ingredients over there. pretty easy. not a lot to talk about. small patties of ground beef. >> small patties. all i did was season it with salt and pepper. there's a million flavors in the sauce. so, once you get the patties going, you let them cook. i love the "today" show. everything is ready. i can just keep moving down. >> like an assembly line. after these have cooked, you save some of the juice they leave behind. >> exactly. that's where a lot of the flavor is. i take the patties out. and the sauce happens, with just onion, cook this around. i like to get the onions

caramelized. we'll speed forward. one of the key ingredients is whiskey. you can use beef broth if you're not into booze. >> are you kidding me? >> i'm giving options. >> carson, have you ever substituted beef broth for whiskey? >> never in my life, mr. lawyer. >> it's too late in life to worry about doing that, carson. after this cooks down, i use barbecue sauce. it's a good convenience ingredie ingredient, and jarred jalapenos. >> this cooks for how long? >> for five minutes. simmers away. this is what the sauce looks like. beautiful and rich and thick. and the patties just go right in. that's hot. that's why they gave me a hot pad. i haven't had all my coffee today. what i love about this is you let the patties simmer away in the sauce. and then, i have toasted buns, the guests come, spoon the sauce over the patties.
