d-day in washington. the eyes of the nation and much of the world watching fired fbi director james comey's much anticipated testimony before congress, making his first public remarks since president trump terminated him. this morning, reaction to comey's prepared opening remarks. >> his statement reads more like a tom clancey novel than your usual garden variety congressional testimony. >> we'll tell you what's next and how the white house will counter the comey testimony. and today, the alleged national security agency leaker is expected to plead not guilty to providing a top secret document to a news outlet. >> new details on the isis-claimed attack in iran.

"early today" starts right now. so good to be with you. i'm frances rivera. james comey's prepared testimony for today's blockbuster hearing is being heard far and wide with allegations he pressured comey to lift the cloud of the russia probe. president trump viewed the release of confirmation of his claims that comey assured him multiple times he was not under investigation. his personal attorney even said the president feels completely and totally vindicated. nbc news justice correspondent pete williams has more on his testimony. >> james comey gives a dramatic account in detail of five one-on-one conversations with donald trump. the first with president-elect trump in new york january 6th. a briefing on the investigation of russia's election meddling and claims about to become public that mr. trump was

4:03 am
i think he requested the dinner. >> reporter: comey says mr. trump called him and he says he got the feeling it was an evident to have me ask for my job and create some kind of patronage relationship. next february 14 after an intelligence briefing, the day after michael flynn was forced to resign. he quotes the president saying i hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting flynn go. he's a good guy. comey says i did not say i would let this go. adding i had understood the president to be requesting that we drop any investigation of flynn into whether flynn made false statements about his conversations with russia's ambassador to the u.s. comey says i did not understand the president to be talking about the broader investigation into russia or possible links to his campaign. comey says he remembers leaving the oval office through the door by the grandfather clock and he told only a few people about it because he didn't want to let the fbi investigators know about a request that the fbi had no intention of granting. after that he says he asked attorney general jeff sessions
4:04 am
to prevent any further direct communications with the president but he says sessions did not reply. march 30 comey says the president called him at the fbi and asked what we could do to lift the cloud of the russia allegations adding, quote, that he had nothing to do with russia, had not been involved with hookers in russia, and had always assumed he was being recorded when in russia. comey replied he told congressional leaders the fbi was not investigating mr. trump who responded, we need to get that fact out. and added if there was some satellite associates of his who did something wrong, it would be good to find that out. two weeks later comey says the president called again and asked what i had done about his request that i get out that he is not personally under investigation. comey says the president added, i have been very loyal to you, very loyal, we had that thing you know. comey says he didn't ask what the president meant by that thing. comey never says in the prepared statement that he thought the president's remarks amounted to obstruction of justice and a

in the car on the ride home. >> we'll talk about how he might answer, given he's no longer in government. can he feel more confident in being more complete in those answers? >> i think that's why everyone is tuning in today. james comey is a very experienced congressional witness. he will tell members of the senate exactly what he wants to hear. remember it was ten years ago he dropped a bombshell in the senate meeting about the meeting in the hospital with attorney general ashcroft. i think it's likely we won't see a whole lot new from the opening statement. but he's skilled in delivering certain things. >> we didn't see a lot yesterday when it came to the top intel officials who were asked questions, couldn't get anything out of them. let's take a listen to that. we'll have that for you in just a minute. talk a little bit about that, when they were trying to go back and forth and try to get some of those responses.

they really gave up nothing. >> remember, these are intelligence officials who are still in the government and they are bound by many sorts of rules about what they tcan disclose, certainly in public. they went into closed sessions where i'm sure they were more forthcoming. james comey can say what he wants to say. whether he'll be reticent about the on going investigation. >> here is a little bit of the exchange at yesterday's hearing. >> i'll ask both of you the same question, why are you not answering these questions? is there an invocation by the president of the united states of executive privilege? is there or not? >> not that i'm aware of. >> why are you not answering the question -- >> i feel it's inappropriate, senator. >> what you feel isn't relevant. what you feel isn't the answer. >> we were talking about how candid we're going to see james comey, but also what other people are watching, too, is mr.
