you're seeing rain starting to move in there and as we get a look at san francisco, some spotty light showers. we've seen it throughout the morning and it continues to move from berkeley and oakland so we'll be tracking the rain that may impact your morning commute and those slick roads will be a factor. >> because as you talked about the north bay saw up to a quarter inch in some areas. this is san rafael. there's slick conditions. if we look at the map farther north i did hair a report, chp filed a complaint -- not complaint but an issue says hydroplaning was involved in one of the crashes up there, 101 south at railroad. a smooth flow of traffic throughout most of the map but you see the green highlighting where the road weather index does talk about the fact you will have slicker roadways, it moves towards the walnut creek interchange. we are also looking at a build over here, typical for heyward. ing folks we're looking at a

smooth ride anywhere south of the bay bridge but we have the rain that will affect the roads. we're looking at the timing for bart because if there is enough rain they'll lowell is the trains down for safety's sake but no delays, 46 trains on the rails. back to you. >> looks good. thank you, mike. live to washington, d.c. this morning where it is expected to be a pivotal day in the russia investigation. fired fbi director james comey will be testifying less than an hour from now and we at least know some of what he is going to say. you see him here minutes ago lying his house, getting into that suv and heading to the capital. scott mcgrew is live in the newsroom with the insight we're expected to learn. >> reporter: comey will detail three meetings, six phone calls with president trump that took place before he was fired. it's expected that he will address reports about his interactions with the president regarding the agency's probe into former national security

adviser michael flynn as well. comey is expected to say that he considered it inappropriate for the president to pressure him into dropping the fbi investigation of flynn. the senate intelligence committee released prepared testimony and opening statement by comey yesterday afternoon. in it, comey says he told president trump he was not personally under investigation but he did not want to say that publicly in days mr. tru-- unle mr. trump came under investigation later. trump demanded loyalty and said i hope you can see your way to letting this go, talking about president trump. democrats have criticized president trump, republicans, on the other hand, treading lightly. >> it was inappropriate to so obsessively hound him about making the case against flynn go away. >> my job is to make sure we don't pre-judge anything. >> our search is the truth. i just want to know what happened. >> now, the white house is said to be preparing a massive response this morning.

bob redell, today in the bad ni >> thank you very much, bob. you can watch comey's testimony without interruptions on nbc bay area. our live coverage begins at 7:00 a.m. on the "today" show. savannah guthrie will be in washington, d.c. it's 6:06 this morning. more than a dozen elementary students in fremont and their families are closely awaiting the results of a critical blood test. those students were poked by another child who found a discarded medical device on the street. it happened eight days ago at cabrillo elementary school. the poking tool is a listen set used by diabetes patients to prick their fingers to test their blood sugar levels. the school said one student ended up poking 14 others. we spoke to a second grader who was a victim. ! it was purple and he poked me in the arm right here. >> he was poked with a needle

and from now until who knows when if brian may come down with something and this is scary. >> reporter: so right there you're hearing from the second grader's grandfather. the school says it took them five days to figure out what happened because the student in question denied poking anybody. these families say they didn't find out for a couple weeks. all 14 poked students were tested for hiv and hepatitis. right now they're awaiting on the results. new details to share this morning. it appears the mt. diablo school district issued a response for plans for a splinter school district in walnut creek. a much smaller school district is in the works that would cover a handful of schools in part of walnut creek. a lot still has to happen for the idea to become a reality but the mt. diablo district says planners must further refine their requests because it does not meet legal requirements for established countries. next fall, more hearings are planned. this morning, a live look at

oracle arena which still had plenty of people inside despite the fact there was no game in town because the warriors did play in cleveland and they may not return to oracle after another thumping in the last few minutes. warriors fans proved last night at oracle you don't even have to be at the game, have it live in front of you to have the championship-level intensity. [ cheers and applause ] they were watching it on screens and look at them. 15,000 or so fans that packed oracle for last night's game three viewing party certainly went nuts. this went beyond standard playoff atmosphere with pretty much everything but the players and a lot of excitement. >> sweep! >> we're so excited. you know why? because last year we were robbed. >> well, it doesn't appear to be a repeat of last year. here's how it went down. cleveland up by as many as seven points late in the fourth

quarter. they seemed to have things under control, kd took this game over. that was the dagger over lebron james, a defining potentially career-defining three with 45 seconds left. the warriors came up huge when it mattered including big defense from andre iguodala. the final score 118-113 as the warriors end the game on an 11-0 run. >> they played extremely well but i just think we stayed in front of them late in the game and, you know, got good shots and we got the basketball but they had it going on all night, you have to give them credit. >> warriors just one win from another nba championship. game four is friday in cleveland and another watch party planned for oracle. ticket there is cost $20. you know these parents are just beaming with pride. everybody pumped up after last

we'll take a closer look at the radar in five minutes. >> as kari tracks the rain, we track the affect on your traffic. minor effects. the tri-valley just seeing a typical slowdown coming out of the altamont pass. we'll show you more coming up. >> mike, kari, thank you very much. a developing story from the east coast and dissushing video that we would like to warn you about that is raising questions about how police responded to a fiery crash following a change. a video shows a man on fire after a car crashed into a pole. as the man tries to get away from the flames you see approaching officers walk up and kick the man right there several times. it turns out the man was an innocent bystander who happened to be near the scene of the crash and he was not the chase suspect. this happened in jersey city on sunday night. right now the mayor of jersey city is calling for those officers to be fired. it's 6:15. tesla, gm, now honda jumping into the self-driving race for automakers.

meyer because she failed to get it sold. analyst believe that verizon paid way too much so in this says meyer is the best thing that could have happened to yahoo investors. uber in trouble again. the head of uber's efforts in india was fired after it was revealed he obtained the medical records of a woman who said had been rained by an uber driver in india. our sister blog recode was the first to report that eric alexander showed the medical records of the woman to uber's ceo and uber vice president emile michael a year ago. uber has been on a firing spri trying to get rid of the bat apples that has come to define uber as a company. wall street will be watching the comey hearings with the rest of us. you have the election in great britain. we assume we know who's going to win that one but we said that before. the dow gained 37 points

wednesday, nasdaq up 22. sam and laura i wanted to show you a little clip. the state capital in sacramento, that's a fellow named ian from san francisco, comcast, our parent company, giving away scholarships to hundreds of california kids. they were kind enough to invite know take part in the ceremony. a lot of kids got money but $10,000 each went to ian chang from balboa high school in san francisco, he doesn't know where he's going to college yet. but mary lee, another student, is going to santa clara. helping bring the tuition down a little bit. >> a little bit. >> good for them. congrats. by the way, we're talking about races, this is a local race. a washington state teenager isn't old enough to vote but he's running if political office. 17-year-old jordan sears wants to be elected to the school board. he lives in a town just northeast of seattle and says he wants to give teachers and

it's covered in most of sonoma, napa county marx written county with pockets of heavy rain moving through and then it continues to extend off to the east at fair field, vallejo and the sacramento valley seeing rain moving in now. san francisco you're dry but roads may be wet after early morning showers move through and there will be more rain on the way. it's moved over towards oakland, san leandro and san lorenzo and approaching the tri-valley. tracking rain moving into the peninsula that will move closer to palo alto within the next eight minutes and moving across the by a to newark within the next 30 minutes. so we'll watch as that continues to move through. hour by hour, pretty good coverage of rain here. looking at showers by 1:00 still moving into the east bay, it becomes lighter as it approaches the south bay later this morning into the early afternoon.

to a san jose man who says he couldn )t get his broken it's 6:25 right now. nbc bay area responds to a san jose man who says he couldn't get his broken furniture fixed even though it was under warranty. >> chris chmura joining us with how he took action. >> reporter: darren wicker called us about two sofas he bought from living spaces in fremont. just six months after buying them, darren says the recliner part of the sofa broke.

they were still under manufacturers warranty so darren called living spaces to get them fixed. living spaces sent out a technician who told them he wasn't operating the sofas correctly but went ahead and said he would order a new part and fix the sofas. darren says he never heard from the tech again. he says he repeatedly called the store and couldn't get any help and this went on for five months. we contacted living spaces and it invited darren to exchange the two sofas which he did. living spaces didn't respond to our request for a comment. if you have a complaint let us know on nbc bay area.com/responds. the california poison control system says 14 cases have been reported in five different counties since last december. it says usually it sees only a few cases of so called death cap

off to the shoulder but it causes enough slowing down towards fremont and we see travel time hovering around a half hour so that is slower than you'd like at this time of the day. slicker roadways so be careful. we'll show you the other side of the bay, palo alto and traffic on 101 by university, no problems. this is northbound but southbound has no delay between the city and silicon valley. back to you. happening later today, it's been six months since the ghost ship warehouse fire in oakland. in a matter of hours the master tenant of the warehouse is going to face a judge. 36 people were killed when the warehouse caught fire a party. >> today in the bay's pete suratos is live outside the jail in dublin where derek almena is being held. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning, laura and sam. as you mentioned, the master warehouse tenant of the ghost ship warehouse derek almena is behind bars at the santa rita jail in dublin but he's expected

to enter a plea during the court hearing in oakland. almena was arrested a few days ago in lake county alongside warehouse tenant max harris who was arrested in los angeles county. both men face criminal charges in connection to the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire that took place in december. following a six month investigation by the alameda county district attorney's office, both men face 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. 36 people died in the warehouse back in december when the building went up in flames during a party being held at the site. as i mentioned, harris was arrested in los angeles county and remains in custody in los angeles. he will be brought here to the bay area but that court hearing for almena will take place at 9:00 a.m. in oakland. live in dublin, pete suratos, today in the bay. happening today, we're expecting to learn more about a suspicious fire in emeryville. the five alarm blazed engulfed the building under construction last month.

investigators are holding a press conference at 2:00 this afternoon to give an update on suspects and a possible cause. luckily no one was injured in the fire. the woman accused of drugging a two-year-old child at a berkeley park will be in court. sayyadina thomas faces felony child abuse charges for allegedly placing drugs in the mouth of a toddler who was playing at people's park in berkeley monday. according to court documents, thomas told police it was a tootsie roll but later admitted it was methamphetamine. we have learned thomas is not a stranger to police, court records show she's been arrested or cited more than 20 times since 2002. authorities are hoping a new reward can help solve the murder of a young high school football player in the east bay. 16-year-old lamar murphy died on january 23. someone shot him as he road his bike in unincorporated hayward not far from city hall. he attended hayward high school. the alameda county sheriff's office announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. his own family is offering a

$25,000 reward. >> for any parent this would be some awfully scary moments and it happened at a north bay supermarket where police say a man is behind bars accused of inappropriately touching a 15-year-old girl. police arrested the man, james stratta, after he allegedly accosted the girl tuesday night at the whole foods. investigators say that stratta, who is homeless, touched the teenager's arm and proceeded the grope her inside of the store. the girl was able to break free and get to her father who confronted him. the victim's father tried to detain stratta with the help of a witness but he was able to get away. police eventually tracked him down and arrested him. he faces sexual battery charges. new details, all dressed up with nowhere to go may be the best way to describe the smart train transit service that will connect sonoma and marin counties. agency leaders met yesterday to talk about why there's still no firm start date from welcoming riders on board. one holdup involves the wait for

glad they'll fix it. highway 17 no problem, the south bay and peninsula looking great. rain kravling across the dunbarton bridge. we see the slowing clear up for southbound 880. there was an earlier crash at alvarado that should be out of the way. slowing 680 pleasanton to sunol your typical pattern. ear's where the green highlighting indicates wet roadways. we go over toward fairfield as kari has been talking about -- sorry, just took her report but we're talking about the roadways. highway 4 saw a crash where there will be slowing through the area because of a crash between 680 and the east shore freeway. travel time, a smooth drive over towards the bay bridge, just 22 minutes down the east shore freeway and we're looking at mass transit, although there are no delays right now, bart has a weekend closure so saturday and sunday they will have the closure. >> when is that?

firefighter's helmet cam. this is the wall of flames overhead on the roof inside a home. this is a view from outside, firefighters on the top of the roof as the fire is eventually controlled. it's smoldering in these shots. it happened at a home on 59th street near martin luther king way. no one was hurt. firefighters suspect an appliance started the fire. a man is in critical condition after gunfire erupted inside of an east bay gas station. san leandro police say somebody walked into the convenience store at the chevron washington avenue and pulled out a gun on the clerk. the clerk did what he was asked, he opened the cash register. he was cooperating when the man shot the clerk anyway. the gas station is taking extra security precautions, the store is open but the door is locked and employees are offering window service only. >> gavin newsom's lead in the race for next governor is shrinking. former l.a. mayor antonio villaraigosa is gaining ground.

a special counsel investigation just getting started, you have the house and the fbi, there will be the world series of politics, the stanley cub of politics in the days ahead. as for today, all eyes will be on the former fbi director james comey as he goes before the senate. we're looking at live pictures as they get ready. comey will be talking about their peculiar meets with the president. meetings comey carefully documented with memoranda after each encounter. again, live pictures from the senate hearing room as we wait for mr. comey to arrive. we know comey will confirm he did tell the president several times that he was not under direct investigation. comey will talk about the dinner where the president asked him to pledge his loyalty and the moment where the president asked him to back off the flynn investigation. in his written statement, he recounts the president as saying "i hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting flynn go.

he is a good guy and i hope you can let him go." comey then says this in his testimony "i understood the president to be requesting we drop any investigation of flynn in connection with statements about his conversations with the russian ambassador in december." so this raises a number of big questions, number one, was that obstruction of justice? two, why didn't comey tell anyone the president of the united states had asked him to quash and investigation? and, third, who's telling the truth? here's the president saying his request to end the flynn investigation never happened. >> did you at any time urge former fbi director james comey in any way, shape, or form to close or back down the investigation into michael flynn? around also -- >> no, no. next question. >> reporter: but that's something comey will square under oath did happen so let's be frank, somebody is lying to

coverage on nbc bay area and nbcbayarea.com. >> scott, thank you very much. there's a lot of buzz around august's solar eclipse considering the last one happened almost 40 years ago. this oregon couple has been getting ready for the event since an overcast portland sky ruped their experience in 1979. since then they have up and moved 65 miles south to an area near salem. they built their house just right in order to be in line with the eclipse. that included putting in a high-tech seven-foot-dome telescope. >> we've been planning for all these years to be ready for the big great american eclipse. >> i roe the dome control software and attached it to the scope software. >> all of this work for two minutes? yes, of course. never a question. >> quite the dedication. they'll enjoy the solar eclipse august 21 with close friends. the salem area is a great spot to see the solar eclipse at its
