4:00 am
i've seen the tweet about tapes. lordy, i hope there are tapes. i was concerned he might lie about the nature of our meeting. >> the president feels completely vindicated. and is eager moving forward with his agenda. >> where to from here as the investigation heats up. and nbc news learned that son-in-law jared kushner will be meeting with senate intelligence committee staffers this month. then the political drama gripping london. the prime minister's election gamble backfires big time. from the political high wire to dare devil who happens to be 88 years order. is this the sign of what's ahead for weekend weather? "early today" starts right now. good to be with you on this friday morning.
4:01 am
i'm frances rivera. all eyes on former fbi director james comey's high-profile testimony with headlines across the country detailing his allegations against president trump. reaction was mixed. more conservative media rallied around the president criticizing comey's performance. nbc news received new information about attorney general jeff sessions, a source says after his public testimony, comey privately told senators about a possible third interaction between sessions and russian officials. sources also tell us that this month president trump son-in-law jared kushner is expected to meet with and provide documents to staffers from the senate intelligence committee as it conducts its russia investigation. chief white house correspondent hallie jackson has more on the blockbuster hearing. >> reporter: commanding a spotlight entirely his, james comey turned it on to the president, describing donald trump as not truthful and not credible. >> i was honestly concerned he might lie about the nature of our meeting, so i thought it
4:02 am
really important to document. >> those memos provided the basis of james comey's testimony, dramatic, compelling and controversial. >> did the president at any time ask you to stop the fbi investigation into russian involvement in the 2016 elections? >> not to my understanding, no. >> reporter: comey, less conclusive when asked about michael flynn, the fired national security advisor, after testifying that he hoped that he would let comey would let flynn go. >> i took it as a direction. the president of the united states with me alone saying i hope this, i took it as this is what he wants me to do. i didn't obey that but that's the way i took it. >> you may have taken it as a direction, but that's not what he said. he said i hope. >> correct. >> you sense that the president was trying to obstruct justice? >> i'm sure the special counsel will work to what the m tension was and whether that's an offense. >> that a bombshell implying the special counsel is looking at with the president broke the law
4:03 am
by directing comey to dial back an investigation. >> why didn't you say mr. president this is wrong? >> if i were stronger i would have. i was so stunned by the conversation that i just took it in. >> another startling revelation came in this acknowledgement from comey about the conversation he documented related to flynn. >> i asked a friend of mine to share the content of the memo with a reporter. i asked him to because i thought that might prompt the appointment it of a special counsel. >> reporter: that of course ultimately happened. all of it triggered by a tweet, the president who apparently suspected comey was behind that leak, wrote on may 12th, james comey better hope there are no tapes of our conversation before he starts leaking to the press. >> look, i've seen the tweet about tapes, lordy i hope there are tapes. if he did, my feelings aren't hurt, release all the tapes. i'm good with it. >> reporter: comey clearly frustrated by the president's explanation for firing him. >> the administration then chose to defame me and more
4:04 am
importantly the fbi saying the organization was in disarray. those were lies plain and simple. >> hallie jackson reporting there. president trump's team was ready to fire back at comey just minutes after he finished testifying the president's outside counsel gave a public address rebuking the fired fbi director. nbc peter alexander has those details. >> the president feels completely vindicated and is eager to continue moving forward with his agenda with the business of this country and this public cloud removed. >> reporter: kasowitz accusing qom me about lying about mr. trump's asking for loyalty. >> the president never in form or substance directed or suggested that mr. comey stop investigating any one. >> reporter: that dispute could easily be settled if the president released secret tapes he suggested exist but is yet to produce. kasowitz also seizing on other points including the statement that comey told mr. trump he was
4:05 am
not personally under investigation. >> mr. comey has now finally confirmed publicly what he repeatedly told president trump privately. >> reporter: the veteran trial lawyer attacking comey for making public privileged communications with the president. >> mr. comey has now admitted that he is one of these leakers. >> reporter: the president's son don jr. did tweet, flynn stuff is bs, adding very far from any kind of coercion or influence and certainly not obstruction. the strategy going forward white house veterans insist leave the russia investigation to the lawyers. >> i would allow the white house to be focused on helping the president do the job of being president. and to me that's most important. don't get wrapped around the axle of the investigation. >> that was peter alexander reporting. >> we're joined by axios reporter sara fischer. almost three minutes away from
4:06 am
the longest twitter doubt ever and then he tweets. he says, despite so many false statements and lie, total and complete vindication, dot, dot, dot. and wow, comey is a leaker. how much should we read into the timing of it, three minutes from the longest. and also the words he used in his first tweet. >> we knew he would focus on comey as a leaker narrative. this is something coming out of the white house immediately following the testimony, we knew they had talking points, things they were going to emphasize. one of which is that comey was the leaker, the other is that the president felt vindicated, and the third is that the president, of course, did not commit any -- three minutes of the longest time of going without tweeting, he's very much aware we're watching everything he does on twitter. he knows he had to be quiet during the testimony. he waited until he felt it was a comfortable time to tweet.
4:07 am
it's also worth noting, three minutes ago, he sent another tweet thanking "fox & friends" for their reporting. >> comey basically saying donald trump is a liar. also when it comes to the flynn comments, he took it as direction there. on the damage scale, where does that stand sf. >> my perception of it is the republican party and all its surrogates were rallying this as being a huge success yesterday. they took a look at some of the things people were tweeting and saying online. people were saying it was a complete victory for donald trump, that he didn't violate any sort of obstruction of justice and that came out during the hearing. if you look at it from the other side, lawmakers, even republican lawmakers are still vocalizing concerns. at this point the white house should be concerned about the outcome of the hearing. >> especially where the topic of tapes come up, especially when it comes to conversations between the president and james comey. let's take a listen about that when it comes to the hearing.
4:08 am
>> i've seen the tweet about tapes. lordy, i hope there are tapes. >> president trump, if you disagree with anything the director said today, play the tapes for all of america to hear or admit there were no tapes. >> so what's the implication here for these tapes if they do exist? >> i think a lot of this has to do with nuanced language. former fbi director comey says the president asked him to potentially intervene in an open investigation between his former national security adviser, michael flynn, and any collusion with russia. the president and his surrogates are saying that never happened. if there are tapes that do exist, we would like to hear that so we have an understanding of the exact language that the president used. why does that matter? when it comes to obstruction of justice, it matters where the president used criminal intent. language will reflect that
4:09 am
intent. >> we've seen some of that language limited, 140 characters on twitter this morning. we'll see what the president says from the rose garden when he meets with the romanian president later this afternoon. sara fischer thank you. this could be an opportunity for trump to speak out on comey's testimony. >> a whale of a tornado captured by a farmer riding a tractor on his farm. he describes it as a vacuum. nbc's bill karins says we're in for a wild weekend. >> from the rockies to the east. unfortunately for our friends on the west coast, it looks like our beautiful, warm, spring-like weather ended with the cold front. the slow-moving storm will continue to affect the region with rounds of showers, especially in the mountain, but coastal areas, too. most of the it from eureka northward.

she said the ride was a bit bumpy. i'd say skip next year and do it when you're 90. >> i bet she will. so chill out there living on the edge and a prepare. >> did you like how i said 60 years from now, 88? >> i'll take it. speaking of brave brits, prime minister theresa may may be stepping down following an election gamble that backfired big time. you're watching "early today." ♪
