120 degrees. plus a terrifying wrong-way crash captured on dash cam. that and more on a special edition of "early today." good to be with you on this thursday morning. i'm frances rivera. house majority whip steve scalise is in critical condition this morning after a gunman opened fire on members of the republican congressional baseball team. scalise's left hip was hit with a shot, the bullet fractured bones, injured internal organs and caused severe bleeding. scalise has already received multiple pients of blood and doctors say he'll need further surgeries. several others were also injured during the shooting. matt mika, a lobbyist for tyson foods was in critical condition. congressional aid zachary barth was also shot but posted a facebook and said he's okay and recovering in the hospital. his boss representative roger williams from texas suffered a sprained ankle during the incident.

two capitol police officers on scalise's security detail were hospitalized. one shot in the ankle but in good condition and the other was released after sustaining a minor nongunshot injury. last night president trump visited the wounded officer in the hospital as well as representative scalise and his wife. the president later tweeted that scalise is in very tough shape, but he is a real fighter. pray for steve. nbc's tom costello has more now on the shooting. >> reporter: captured on cell phone video, the chilling moment that gunshots rang out in alexandria, virginia. >> shots fired and people are possibly victims involved. >> reporter: an all-out gun battle. as capitol hill police and alexandria officers engaged a lone gunman, 66-year-old james hodgkinson targeting republican members of congress who were practicing for a charity baseball game.

>> we need medics. we've got a suspect shooting. we're at the baseball field -- >> among the first to be hit, republican whip steve scalise. >> he's drug himself from the dirt infield to the grass outfield. there's a trail of blood. we can't help him. we're helpless. we have bats versus rifle. >> reporter: scalise detail and capitol hill police immediately began -- returned fire. >> reporter: the gunman armed with a semiautomatic assault weapon and a handgun. >> he was crouched behind a wooden piece of stands and he had an ak-47 in his hands. he was exchanging fire with police officers who were crouched behind a black suv. >> reporter: the six people injured include steve scalise, capitol hill police officers david bailey and crystal griner.

matt mika, a lobbyist for tyson foods, zachary barth and representative williams who twisted an ankle. >> two of the capitol police were shot. one staffer who dove into the dug out with a leg wound. we got a belt and stopped the bleeding. we were tending to him as well as try to keep down away from the shooter. >> reporter: members of congress said the gunman knew who was on the field. >> individual walked up and said hey are those republicans or democrats. jeff said republicans. the guy turned around and started walking towards the field. it was a little odd. i didn't see any indication of violence or anything. >> big fat guy, probably 5'8", 5'10", a t-shirt and shorts. had a long gun and pistol. >> reporter: after an intense gunfight that shot out the windows of the next door ymca hodgkinson was shot and wounded and died a few hours later at the hospital. meanwhile, all five victims were rushed to area hospitals.

representative scalise taken off the field by medics. a police officer taken out by chopper. >> i never thought i would come to baseball practice for local d.c. charities and have to dodge bullets. >> reporter: representatives who normally don't have security detail were grateful for the capitol police who would not have been there if scalise were not on the field. >> they probably saved our lives and the lives of other people because we were all sitting duck, those of us in the dugout. >> that was nbc's tom costello reporting. the political accusations started flying hours after the bullets started. former house speaker newt gingrich on fox news blaming a pattern of what he calls increasing hostility on the left for the gunman's actions. here's nbc's pete williams with what we actually know about the shooter. >> reporter: police and federal agents descended on the suburban st. louis home of james hodgkinson looking for clues about what led him to carry out the shooting, having identified him quickly they say from the i.d. he was carrying.

age 66, a home inspector who allowed his license to lapse last fall. his social media profile reveals someone who strongly disliked republican policies and bitterly opposed president trump. in march he wrote on facebook trump destroyed our democracy, time to destroy trump and company. two days ago he used obscenities to describe this week's white house cabinet meeting. a year and a half ago he wrote i hate republicans and everything they stand for. a family member said hodgkinson was distraught over last year's election and worked as a volunteer for the bernie sanders campaign. >> i am sickened by this despicable act, and let me be as clear as i can be. violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society. >> reporter: hodgkinson was a prolific letter writer to his local paper. in 2011 he described republicans as full of hate.

during 2011's occupy wall street demonstrations he talked to the st. louis fox affiliate. >> 99% are getting pushed around and the 1% are just not giving a damn. >> reporter: the congressman from hodgkinson's district said he wrote or called the office ten time but never threatened. >> they were disagreeing with my position, but they were not any threats or any red flags that were sent out. >> reporter: in late march sheriff's deputies responded to calls from residents who said he was shooting in the woods near his bellville house. >> we went over and talked to him. he was very nice. hey, i'll take it to a range somewhere where it was safer and that was the end of it. >> reporter: officials said he had been in suburban washington, d.c. for the past six weeks and frequented an alexandria, virginia ymca that's directly across the treat from the ballpark. >> thanks to nbc's pete williams for that report. new developments in the russia investigation.

"the washington post" reports special counsel robert mueller is examining whether president trump attempted to obstruct justice. "new york times" list the intelligence officials mueller requested to interview which include dan coats and mike rogers, as well as rick ledgett who the "wall street journal" explains may have documented a significant phone call between rogers and president trump. nbc's tracie potts is in zchlt c. this morning. >> reporter: this is a significant turn in the investigation if, in fact, robert mueller is looking into whether the president tried to influence or get others to influence this reaction. we now have reaction this morning, new from president trump. take a look at this tweet in response to the story. he says they made up a phony collusion with the russian story, found zero proof so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story. nice. earlier we heard from the

president's personal attorney, in fact, a spokesperson for that attorney, they've been handling all the questions about the russia investigation. they called this an fbi leak of information that's outrageous, inexcusable and illegal. it's certainly raising questions about whether or not after the firing of fbi director james comey questions came up about the president's influence in that or involvement in that at all. both dan coats, the director of national intelligence and admiral rogers, the head of the nsa have said here under oath that they wouldn't talk about their private conversations with president trump, but now it look like they may need to talk about those conversations with the special prosecutor in charge of this investigation. >> tracie potts, thank you. safe to say parts of the west know heat, but i don't know about this kind of heat. are we really going to get within two degrees of the hottest temperature ever recorded, bill. how close are we? >> close for phoenix. 122 is the all-time hottest
