morning.. first to victory. >> the countdown is on this morning. we are live in oakland with what you need to know ahead of the warriors parade this morning. good morning, everyone, thank you for joining us, i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura this morning. if you're headed out to the warriors parade, you want to know about the traffic picture and you want to know about the forecast. sounds perfect. >> it is going to be great. we couldn't do any better than this. we start out with cool temperatures and clear skies. grab a light jacket heading out the door and this is what it feels like across the area. mid-50s for the tri-valley and south bay, 57 in the peninsula and 54 in san francisco. east bay at 57 degrees and for

the victory parade, of course we have some sunshine in the forecast today. it starts out at 10:00 at 68 degrees and upper 70s for the afternoon. we'll take a look ahead, what else, as those temperatures ramp up. that's coming up in about 10 minutes and mike has a quiet start to the morning. >> a quiet start to the freeways. a lot of activity in oakland in a report just a few minutes away but i want to show you the freeways are moving well this morning, the only incident we're tracking is in san rafael. southbound 101 at central san rafael. you see the very light traffic. there is one crash over on the shoulder but you see a few folks driving through the curves. they're able to get through there. we'll talk about transit an the roadways going on throughout the morning coming up, back to you. breaking overnight. investigators looking into a suspicious fire in a south bay school. firefighters were called to caroline davis middle school around 1:30 near monterey

highway on the south side of the city. we talked to a security guard at the school. he said the door to the teachers lounge was set afire. well, the excitement lives on. the warriors are the champs, as you well know and now is the time to celebrate. the parade is just a few hours away now and record crowds are expected to show up. >> that's where sam and laura will be but also pete suratos live with the preparations under way right now. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you scott and kris. it's happy warriors parade day in oakland. the celebration continues. we're standing at 11th street and broadway. fans have already showed up. we'll step out as the car goes through. looking at the tribune building

lit up blue and gold for the golden state warriors so this is where the parade will start. the balloons are set up ready to go to give you an idea of how this whole day is going to shake out with a lot of people expected to be here. we're expecting nearly one million folks to be here. so it will be a very busy day here on 12th street. the set up under way. balloons being set up. police are holding it down so it's a good idea to get here early. we showed you some fans already smart, showing up here past 4:30. we'll talk to them and have that in the next hour. we'll send it back to you in the studio. >> i'm sure they'll be willing to talk about their warriors. thank you very much. >> thanks, pete. bart is the best way to go if you're planning to commute into oakland. here's what you need to know. the busiest hours for bart for

the 2015 parade were 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. so maybe avoid that. if you can, get a clipper card so you can avoid the line at the ticket machines. when you get on the train, move towards the center of the train so people can get inside, don't block down t doors, that cut shut down the whole train. get off at 19th or 12th street stations in oakland. avoid the lake merritt station, it's not big enough to handle big crowds. we'll have you covered on television start to finish. we've been planning this for days, our nbc area team of anchors and reporters will be up and down the parade route to capture your favorite basketball stars and our nbc helicopter will be in the area. you can watch it on nbc bay area starting at 9:30 this morning. in other news, the developing story we continue to follow, the tragedy in san francisco. this morning, the investigation is still very active at the u.p.s. facility where a gunman opened fire on his fellow workers before then killing

himself. we now know the identity of the suspect, he is 38-year-old jimmy lam. nbc bay area also exclusively learned that lam used two weapons in the shooting, including a mack 10 style machine pistol and he also had a backpack full of ammunition. lam was a u.p.s. driver who filed an overtime grievance in late march and authorities believe he may have been upset with his boss. meantime, we are learning more information about the victims as well. three u.p.s. employees who were shot dead in cold blood. 56-year-old wayne chan and 50-year-old benson louie, both of san francisco as well as 46-year-old mike lafiti of hercules. >> reporter: mike's u.p.s. route family stands stunned at a memorial in diamond heights, shocked. big mike, the man with a huge smile and kind words for everyone is gone. >> the way he made you feel like

you were part of something. i mean, he was just an awesome person. i just want his family to know how much he was really loved. >> reporter: residents say he delivered packages in diamond heights for many years and knew everyone by name. the 46-year-old from hercules leaves a wife and five kids behind. family members say he was a devoted family man who could always find the bright side. >> good natured. just loving. not a negative bone in his body. at least i don't think so. i never seen it. i just know that i loved him. >> reporter: family members say he was shot in the chest at the u.p.s. facility. they wonder if he was trying to stop the shooter. >> with his injury he is sustained it was because probably probably trying to stop him. that's the kind of person he was. >> reporter: shaken co-workers remember lefiti was larger than life. >> really nice guy.

lower following the fed's decision to hike interest rates for the second time this year. the markets ended mixed yesterday with the dow closing at a record high, asia and europe cautious today as the feds signalled it could raise rates again this year and also raising concerns about low inflation. let's watch oil prices today which are at six-week lows on continued concerns about a global supply glut that far outweighs current demand levels. now, the dow rising 46 points to 21,374, the nasdaq fell 25 to 6194. the number of complaints by passengers on u.s. airlines rose sharply in april, up 70% following a series of high-profile incidents including the man being dragged off the united airlines flight, i'm sure we remember that. congress may take up the issue of passenger rights when it considers a bill to reauthorize the faa but the complaints and incidents haven't hurt airline stocks, united is near an

awl-time high. staffers at the federal trade commission has raised serious concerns about the pending merger of fan dual and draft kings. the deal could be drop which had would combine the top two daily fantasy sports sites giving them roughly 80% of the market. kris and scott, back to you. >> thank you, courtney. the death toll rose to 17 from yesterday's massive high-rise fire in london but don't count on the number 17. still's still an undetermined number of people who remain unaccounted for. firefighters said they didn't expect to find more survivors in the burned shell of a tower. witnesses are talking about amazing rescues including one baby caught after someone dropped it from the ninth floor. firefighters are looking into claims the tower had no central fire alarm and it definitely didn't have a sprinkler. the fact i don't say need to

know as the warriors take to the streets for their big parade. if you're getting ready to leave from san jose, we wake up with clear skies and chilly temperatures. the temperature trend in ever green will be in the low 60s at 8:00. rising into the mid to upper 80s through the day. we'll take a look ahead to the forecast for the parade coming up next. we're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza as folks leave oakland. no problem. as we've been talking about, people are worried about coming into oakland wech. and live from washington, a major newspaper says the president of the united states is under investigation for criminal obstruction of justice. ad lib live picture-- oracle

=mapvo= if you )re planning on going to the parade... get let's take a live look where it all started in the oracle arena this morning. today is the big warriors parade day. if you're planning on going to the parade, get there early. more than a million warriors fans are expected to line the parade route. you can see the route right there that starts at broadway and 11th street in oakland, goes up to grand, around lake merritt before ending at the kaiser convention center. >> well, the weather, kari -- >> it could be snowing and people would be like, "i'm still going. it's going to be perfect. we'll have comfortable

temperatures and sunshine to go along with it. here's what you're feeling now as you step out the door. mid to upper 50s, a fairly mild start and as we go through the day, highs in the upper 80s for the south bay. temperatures going up a few more degrees from yesterday so that is the trend we've seen under way all week long. it continues into the next several days. concord up to 93, oak land will see a high of 77. 78 degrees in san mateo. san francisco low 70s. mission district one of the warmest areas up to 72 degrees. 90 in map pnapa. you'll see our temperatures really will stay hot for quite a while. so if you are planning to head out to oakland today at least it will be nice and cool. we're at 61 degrees at 8:00. noontime temperatures along the parade route. throughout the day 75 degrees for the high temperature.

so looking live at san jose, you're getting ready for the day, maybe you're heading to work and it will be a day for sunglasses, maybe sandals if it's a casual day and we will see more of this kind of weather where we need the sunglasses and sunscreen over the next several days. an excessive heat watch has been issued for the coastline. all of these areas shaded in red. in the valleys temperatures in the 90s, 100 degrees possible. pollution as we go into next week and temperatures are going to be at least 20 degrees above average in the coast and san francisco will still be fairly mild as far as our temperatures reaching into the low to mid-70s, just enough of a breeze to keep our temperatures more comfortable there but look at how our temperatures change. inland valleys going in the low 90s. we will see triple digit temperatures through the middle of next week at least so be

prepared for a lot of heat in the forecast. and let's talk about the warriors victory parade. >> and not these temperatures anymore. we're looking at a great day today and great roadways. slowing up the peninsula. slower moving through 280. i'll track that. but we're focused on this right now. the big issue, the parade route scott and chris showed you is off of here off of lake merritt, between lake merritt and 980 through downtown oakland. you'll find a few street closures, a big note is they're closing off broadway, jackson and oak street off ramps starting at 7:00 a.m. you can't get there off of the freeway so avoid overloading the streets. 9:00 is when everything seals up except for 14th and 20th. those are the last roadways to close. sbart a great option for you but take the 12th or the 19th street station as we talk about because lake merritt is at the smallest station and last time they had

to close the station down because folks couldn't get out. that's where the parade ends and where the festival is. remember, take mass transit if you can, bart is advising that and ac transit will be rerouted through that area. one note, if you're riding on the pittsburgh line, you'll have fewer trains because they've diverted a few to take care of the oakland traffic. that may be an issue. let's look at waze. traffic is light but you want to use waze if you're driving from the pittsburgh or concord area over into downtown oakland. we've mapped out the route. the obvious choice 24 to 680. but your options may change and that will help you on the surface streets. so join our team. we'll share that information on waze today for the parade or throughout the summer wherever your plans take you. make sure you hit the profile. that's your name there and then you'll hit teams. investigating president donald trump for possible obstruction of justice. that is new reporting from the "washington post." the other report says the investigation expanded to the president days after he fired fbi director james comey president trump's team says that fbi leaking information is really the problem. >> reporter: california's new budget has new rules for marijuana sales. it set standards for organic pot. it allows pot samples at county fairs and permits home delivery. lawmakers are expect ed to approve today. also written into the budget, a threat to withhold $50 million from the uc system if it does not meet the recommendations of a recent state audit. that april audit reported that administrators failed to disclose $175 million in the president's office even as tuition was spiking.

uc president janet napolitano committed to keeping clearer budget plans and records but she does dispute the audit's charge. education secretary betsy devos is going after obama era rules that forgive student loan s because of universities. the rules allowed students to ask for loan forgiveness if they were defrauded by for-profit colleges. this happened recently, you might remember in 2015, $247 million in student loans were forbidden because colleges were found to have misled 15,000 students. 4:51. palo alto schools are reportedly trying to figure out how to reverse an unusually high number of opt-outs in the state exam tied to federal funding. the palo alto weekly reports only about 20% of the juniors at two high schools took this year's common core state standards tests.

other nearby districts were closer to 90% participation. statewide it's 99% of juniors who take the test. california dams and spillways are going under immediate inspection as ordered by state engineers. about 70 aging dams will be inspected, some of them date back to the gold rush era. the inspection orders come as officials review what went wrong with the spillway failure at the oroville dam in january. coming up, this is a surprise. the bridge school benefit is a no-go this year. we'll tell you what neil young says about the break in bay area tradition. but first, happening now, summer is fast approaching, there's still snow covering the highways in yosemite. highway 120 remains closed as workers dig out from the snow pile that's as high as 20 feet. double check your plans if you head out there soon. plus, happening right now in oakland, pg&e crews hanging balloon arches, large banners and other warriors decorations along the parade route. you can watch out for workers if you're along the area.

parade preparations -- fans already lining up it's never too early to get set up for a parade. we see folks throughout with their bright blue warriors chairs dressed up and ready to go for the parade. fans lining up. we have our team out there as well. sam and laura will be at the parade route. what a thrill for them. meanwhile, mark peterson resigned after being charged with 13 felony counts, including perjury and grand theft. the charges stem from $66,000 in campaign funds which peterson used for personal expenses. peterson's attorney made the deal, plead nothing contest to one felony count and agreeing

peterson would resign. the contra costa county board of supervisors must appoint a new attorney. pressure mounts on san francisco's park and recs department to throw a summer of love 50th anniversary concert. the department has refused to allow the show citing safety concerns but organizers say the department is throwing a similar concert with dozens of musicians in golden gate park this month. later this morning, attorney general angela aliota will present an appeal to the department to ask the anniversary show be allowed to go on. a popular bay area concert won't take place. the bridge school benefit concert has been canceled. superstar neil young and his ex-wife peggy started the annual event in 1986. money from it benefits the bridge school, a nonprofit organization that helps with severe speech and physical impairment. it's not clear if that concert

will be revived or why they canceled in the the first place. happening today, san jose police will run the special olympics torch through the city to raise money for this summer's games at uc davis. it kicks off at 10:00 at cottle road and highway 85. officers will run through willow glen into downtown san jose to end at the alameda and julian. you can find a link to donate if you want in our twitter feed that will help sjpd reach their $100,000 fund-raising goal. we saw the live pictures of people setting up their chairs. coming up, the heat is on. it will be a warm one for warriors fan this is morning. and just in case you're wondering how hot can it get here in the bay area in june, how about 113 degrees in napa. that happened back in 2000. and also for yesterday the record high temperature, 109. so we are in for some triple digit heat but it doesn't look to be record-breaking. more on that coming up next.
