bleeding pretty badly, but i was really just trying to keep my head down, keep everybody's heads down and prevent anything else from happening. we were -- we didn't know what was going on. there was a lot of uncertainty and we were just trying to stay alive. >> as i understand it, zach, you more or less jumped right into the congressman's arms, right congressman williams? what happened from your perspective? >> well, i was hitting ground balls on the third base side, our third baseman, trent kelly, not knowing, frankly, that the shooter was probably just 20 yards away from where i was. then i went around and started hitting balls to steve scalise. i hit the first grounder to him and all of a sudden we heard this pop. and a lot of us thought it might have been a car backfiring, but then it became pop, pop, pop, pop. people were run yelling, he's got a gun, get cover. and i turned and i immediately, it was a reaction, i guess, i dove into the dugout. the dugout is six foot into the ground, so it's a pretty far --
7:11 am
it's a pretty far dive head-first on a concrete slab, but i did it. when i got there, i was immediately with congressman flake and mo brooks. and all of a sudden here comes zach, and he just jumped in there and all of a sudden here we were arm to arm. and mo brooks took his belt off and gave it to flake and i and we helped put a tourniquet on zach's leg to help his bleeding. and then we stayed down. and we had -- we had generations in this dugout. we had everybody from my age to the late 60s to a 10-year-old, joe barton's son was in the dugout with us. and people were protecting him. so we bonded that day, but it was a scary thing. and i just want to say real quick that the thin blue line worked. these two officers were fabulous. they saved all of our lives. there's no question that it would have been different if they hadn't been there. and we owe it all to them. >> if you think about what would have happened had that gunman
7:12 am
not been opposed by those two officers during those first three minutes before the alexandria police got there. another thing that struck me, i don't know if you saw that animation we had, this gunman started on the third base side, went up and down the line around toward home plate and back up because he couldn't find a way to get on the field. have you stopped to think about what would have happened had he made his way onto that field? >> well, it would have been a lot different. and the amazing thing was, he was trying to get through a gate and the gate was locked. so he couldn't get through the locked gate. he had nowhere to go. but if he had gotten onto the field, i mean, we would have had nowhere to go. we had baseballs and bats to defend ourselves. so the lord worked his -- the lord worked yesterday. he saved us. and we're grateful for that, but also grateful, again, for these capitol police that saved all of us. >> zach, i always wonder what it must be like to lay your head down on your pillow after a day like the one you had yesterday

and what thoughts go through your mind. can you share how you're feeling and how you're thinking about what's transpired? >> yeah, i mean, i'm receiving plenty of prayers and thoughts. the people around me, we've got a great community. i'm from houston, texas. plenty of people back home have reached out to me. and the people around here, you know, on both sides of the aisle, we've got a great community up here on capitol hill. and everybody has just lifted me up and i couldn't be more blessed. >> i have to say, it's going to be one of the most watched congressional softball games in history. >> it's not softball. >> baseball, excuse me, baseball. with good reason. i know your thoughts and prayers go to everyone impacted by this tragedy. >> certainly has. we hope people come to the game. we hope nat stadium is full. 50,000. it goes to charity. some people thought maybe we shouldn't have played it but as speaker ryan and joe barton and i talked about, we need to play

"the washington post" is reporting that mueller's team is actively investigating the possibility that president trump obstructed justice. nbc national correspondent peter alexander joins us from the white house. what can you tell us? >> reporter: this could be a significant turning point in the investigation. the president the subject of a criminal investigation into possible obstruction of justice. just moments ago, president trump tweeted writing, they made russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story. nice. as president trump was wrapping up his 71st birthday, an

unwanted gift from robert mueller. "washington post" reporting they are expanding the russian inquiry, now saying the president may have obstructed justice. investigators working with mueller are reportedly preparing to interview three top intelligence officials including director of national intelligence dan coats and the head of the national security agency mike rogers. it's a dramatic development in an investigation that's been looming over the trump administration since day one. the post reporting the obstruction of justice investigation began days after mr. trump abruptly fired fbi director james comey on may 9. the move appearing to confirm what comey told senators under oath last week, when asked whether he believed the president's request to back off the investigation into national security advisor michael flynn amounted to obstruction. >> that's a conclusion i'm sure the special counsel will look to, to try to see what the

matt and savannah? >> peter alexander, thank you. let's bring in msnbc's chief legal correspondent ari melber. good morning to you. let's play this out, two of the key intelligence officials, mr. coats and mr. rogers, have already said that they didn't feel, they said this under oath, that they were not pressured in any way to end any kind of investigation. so is this obstruction investigation now going to boil down to the word of james comey verse the word of the president? >> probably not. that's because the doj doesn't care about their feelings in the way they put it in the now famous testimony. the doj cares about the feelings and intent of the president. this is by far the largest development legally in the trump era. it is a sign that the inquiry is not just about the campaign in the past, it's a criminal inquiry into the president's conduct in office, the present. >> and how is that likely to proceed? i mean, in a normal investigation, one might try to get the testimony of the person you're investigating. could mueller conceivably get the testimony of president trump under oath?
7:18 am
could it set up a situation where the president could say, i don't want to testify because of the privilege or fifth amendment? >> all those things are possible. previously, we have seen prosecutors or independent prosecutors seek testimony of white house aides, senior officials and get it. grand jury testimony is hard to resist. president clinton was faced with it, and we are not there yet, they agreed voluntarily to do grand jury testimony under oath. whether a president would not agree and be forced is a legal question that has never been answered. >> ari melber, thank you very much. another big story we have been covering this morning, that terrible inferno in london. the death toll has raisin -- risen overnight and is expected to go higher. at least 17 people lost their lives in the fire that consumed a high-rise apartment building. and this morning many more people still remain missing. authorities are calling this the city's worst fire in a generation. bill neely is nbc's chief global correspondent and is there again for us this morning.

8:52 am
>> you did this, didn't you? >> you thought we were about to do a commercial for fedex employees. i see you have your hat on. well, first of all, i wanted to meet you because i finally can meet somebody that knows how to do the weather. but not only that, but this young man behind you, do you know who this is? >> no idea. >> this is chris lily, world champion barbecue mavin. >> is that right? >> that's right. and he, you and i are going to do a cooking segment grilling your world famous ribs live on the "today" show. >> that will work. >> are you surprised? >> no, i'm not. i'm in weather, you're never surprised. >> well, what makes him such a great dad? >> he's just been so loving and just so caring. and he's giving great advice and just an amazing grandfather. >> melvin bradley, happy father's day a little early. we'll be grilling with you. we've got more from palm coast, florida, and the rest of the "today" show coming up. but first, this is "today" on nbc.

9:03 am
figure that out. when you have a limited amount of time, a lot of people don't realize a lot of the pitches, they may be scheduled for 30 minutes. by the time the meeting starts, the reality is you have a couple minutes to convince someone to change your life in real life. and we replicate that with the escalator. >> how does it work? they come down the escalator and give them your pitch. then do you choose if you like it and they become on your team, you're a mentor? >> we have to pitch against each other. >> then we all compete if we all want the same person to join our team. and we try to convince them to join our team. >> so does it get competitive? >> oh, sometimes. >> look at her face. >> a little bit. jessica is like the most incredible, smart, like winner. so when we started her pitch, we are all like, okay, nevermind. >> so this is for people at home, to give you a good idea, we'll check out one app developer lauren who worked with you, right, gwyneth? >> yeah.

9:05 am
so to see that go through, and that was an amazing win. >> it's really interesting. we all have the things we run, but it's on you. this was an interesting thing because you get so emotionally vested into the humans. you go into this room. you have to really let them pitch. like i was biting my tongue the whole time because it's really got to be them. and then their lives change or they don't. i mean, that's just real. >> it's huge. >> this is not like, hey, now america knows about them. these are millions of dollars, they are trying to build companies. that's a big deal. >> really awesome. >> we'll talk about that in the hour ahead. but i wanted you to explain it so they are like, okay, what are they doing? the new episode is available exclusively on apple music each tuesday. >> yes. >> that's cool. i have to tell you guys, i was asking earlier, i didn't realize this was possible. so you can go on apple to see a show. this is just -- >> well, it's new, right? it's cutting edge. >> this is the first step. >> in every app, you can go into the app store, and it is actually available right there.
