friday morning...and the feel around the bay area is about to change. the heais friday morning and the feel around the bay is about to change and not just because of the weekend coming in, it's the heat. a live look at san francisco right now, one of the few places where you won't be swept up in that heat wave. thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock and that's a good thing for san franciscans. most people do not have air conditioning so at least that's one of the places protected. >> right. you'll have your natural air conditioning and maybe even starting out with fog this morning. we are seeing some fog along the coastline and that will keep you nice and comfortable over the next several days, but no help whatsoever for the inland valleys. we start out this morning with some mild temperatures. look at fairfield, it's already 65 degrees.
4:31 am
64 degrees in san jose. and the heat advisory in effect for all these areas shaded in orange, that's away from the immediate coastline, and also just south of san francisco. so our temperatures reaching into the 90s and possibly 100 degrees over the next several days. for today, we're going to see those highs for napa to 97 degrees, concord 98, and 92 in morgan hill. we'll talk more about the heat and mike now takes us through the tri-valley. >> from the coast where it might be cooler to the tri-valley where it's not going to be cooler, we're looking great now. there was overnight activity about two hours. we had lanes blocked by a crash and car fire. no major injuries that i heard about but that was a major problem. we still see a little slowing showing up on our sensors, although chp has cleared this incident from their reports just before 4:00. i'm going to track this and let you know if anything else is going on. i think there's a crew hanging out and messing around with those sensors. good news for everyone heading through downtown oakland, after that parade which was great news
4:32 am
yesterday, it was not good for traffic flow but it has been reinstated. no delays for any of these agencies. we should be back to normal. we have new developments to get to, breaking news of the deadly london high-rise fire. the death toll of that tragedy has now risen to 30 people. scotland yard is now reportedly also opened up a criminal investigation. firefighters have been unable to conduct a full search of the building, so the death toll could continue to go up. they say they will not be able to until support structures are in place to shore up the integrity of the tower. more breaking news just into our newsroom. the russian defense ministry says this morning that they may have killed the top isis leader in an air strike. russian officials posted on facebook that an air strike on may 28th killed 30 commanders in the field and up to 300 militants during an isis conference. they're also saying there are reports that ibrahim al baghdadi, isis' leader, was also
4:33 am
killed. u.s. officials are working to confirm that right now. there are also reports of baghdadi's death in the past that have turned out to be false, so stay tuned. 4:33. we have some disturbing details to pick up on about the gunman in the u.p.s. shooting ram pain that we brought you live breaking coverage of back on wednesday. we now know he was specifically targeting other victims. he told others to run away. >> sergio quintana has more on his possible motive. >> reporter: the hustle and bustle of the brown delivery trucks has returned. u.p.s. has brought in extra workers from across the bay area to get customers' packages delivered. just inside the massive bay on the third floor is where the shooting rampage started. according to witnesses, drivers had just started a weekly morning routine caldweled welln wednesdays. law enforcement sources say just before 9:00 a.m., driver jimmy lam walked in carrying an
4:34 am
assault pistol, a handgun and backpack of ammunition. one of the weapons was unregistered. we're told lam may have believed a few of his fellow drivers belittling him. he took aim at some co-workers and told others to get out. >> there was pop, pop, pop, pop, six, seven shots, and then he fired at least five or six more outside. >> reporter: killed in the hail of gunfire, u.p.s. drivers benson louie, wayne chan and mike lafiti. two other drivers were shot but were treated and released from san francisco general hospital. we're told lam was confronted by members of the s.w.a.t. team. he briefly raised a gun at them and then took his own life. police searched lam's home yesterday afternoon looking for clues. according to the u.p.s. workers union, lam had filed an overtime grievance and we've learned he had a history of alcohol use and dui. fellow drivers say they would
4:35 am
have never imagined he could do this. >> that was sergio quintana reporting. meantime, memorials continue to pop up across the city in honor of those victims. one of them is in diamond heights. coming up in our next half hour we'll have more on the victims' lives and how they impact their community. you can also stay up to date by visiting our website, nbcbayarea.com. two people from last year's ghost fire are expected back in court today. the manager of the warehouse and max harris, a tenant, have been charged with 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. harris says he has no idea where that allegation has come from. state lawmakers sent a spending plan to the governor's desk late looast night. it is a $183 billion package which raises school funding and expands a tax credit for the working poor. it restores cuts to medi-cal and

gives sacramento more power over uc finance. coming up next, wouldn't it be nice if you could have a magic wand to wave? amazon bringing one of those bad woiz to your house. we'll tell you what happens if you wave it over food and products around the house. also it now seems to be blowing up. the reason twitter users are outraged about a change the company made. maybe you've seen it.

4:39 am
good morning, i'm landon dowdy live at cnbc world headquarters. here are the top business headlines. wall street will end on a positive note after markets fell yesterday but closed well off of their lows. big-name tech stocks such as google, amazon, facebook, apple and netflix sold off, dragging down the overall market. also the parent of snapchat is trading at its ipo price of $17 a share. also look for data on housing and the consumer today. the dow, which had been down as much as 116 points, closed off just 14 to 21,359. the nasdaq dropping 29 to 6165. amazon has a new tool to help you order items in your home with the wave of a wand, the dash wand lets you say what you want or scan items that are automatically placed into your cart. items include those listed on
4:40 am
amazon, amazon fresh, the company's local grocery business. the wand costs $20, but you can get $20 in-store credit when you register the device. it also offers features such as converting measurements, calorie counts and recipes. speaking of amazon, it's founder and ceo, jeff bezos, wants your help. he's reached out on twitter asking for ideas on how best to spend his money and devote his efforts to charity. he is estimated to be worth more than $80 billion. he and his wife have donated millions of dollars to scientific research while his family foundation focuses primarily on education. >> thank you very much, landon. we're going to wave our wand over twitter, which has unveiled a new look and what do you think? it's not going over well with a lot of users. the new design makes it faster and easier to use with boulder headlines and it cons and also changes profile pictures from square shape to round.
4:41 am
there were 30,000 tweets within hours complaining, perhaps mocking the new look. what do you think? >> i'm checking it out. i don't really notice much of a difference. >> i haven't noticed it yet, but i'll check it out during the break. while you're doing that, up next, kari hall joining us right now. we are going to feel big differences in the forecast starting today. >> it will be all about the heat as we take a live look at palo alto. not needing the air conditioning just yet as we look at the temperature trend for sunnyvale, going up into the upper 80s later today. i'll talk more about that and what you can expect coming up on the other side of the break. not air conditioning just yet. over here no slowing just yet on the san mateo bridge. we know that's going to change as well as we're heading west with these taillights over to the peninsula side. and an american convicted of espionage by north korea is back at home. but why is he unresponsive?
4:42 am
the dueling stories about his medical case.
4:43 am
food. water. internet. we need it to live. but what we don't need are surprises, like extra monthly fees. i see you, fee, played by legendary actress anjelica huston. you got me, mark. we just want fast internet for one, simple rate.
4:44 am
for all the streaming and the shopping and the newsing, but most of all... for the this. internet for one everyday simple price and no extra monthly fees. warriorpa right now, we are feeding off of the excitement of yesterday's epic warriors parade. at one point steph started pumping that trophy back and forth. the warriors have captured five championships in the last seven years. we're getting pretty good at rolling out the red carpet or in this case the glittery gold carpet. >> if you watched on tv like i
4:45 am
did or online or in person like sam did, there were a few things you probably couldn't see. >> it was a pretty amazing perspective from right on the middle of the street there. here's nbc bay area's anchor raj mathai with some of the highlights from the victory parade. >> kevin, where are you right now? >> on cloud nine, baby. >> and that's how he rolled atop a double decker bus. kevin durant rolled past the thousands of fans like a conquering hero. but the spirit of this parade wasn't on the buses, it was on the street. steph curry brought the bling to the fans while steve kerr, showing no signs of back pain, jogged part of the parade route and answered emphatically about his status for next season. >> will i see you next year? >> hell yes. >> this is for every person in the bay area who enjoys the coaching here and this is what it's all about, right? >> yeah!
4:46 am
>> the personality of this fan base and these players was on full display. we'll remember javale and zaza for a long time and never forget klay and dre. this was a bay area dance party with that oakland vibe. >> i have to say one of my favorite moments happened before the parade. sam, you were trying to rile up the crowd and you ran the flag. you looked like a natural. >> i posted this on my facebook page. >> i love it. >> i didn't even make like my junior year basketball team, so feeling that sense of like excitement and peep actually cheering for you. >> and then they had this parade for you and everything. >> they did. >> he's so tall. oh, wait, no, he's not a warrior. >> if you are on the warriors, i was asked. >> i'm on the sidewalk. >> and they had some beautiful weather yesterday. it was so nice and then as we head into the weekend we're
4:47 am
getting ready for a heat-up around the bay area, especially inland. this is where we begin, in the low 60s as you get ready to head out the door. all clear at 64 degrees in the south bay and on the left side of your screen in the east bay looking at oracle, it's 62 now and 59 in san francisco. as we head through the day, we're going to see the highs reaching into the upper 80s and lower 90s. morgan hill today up to 92 degrees. for the east bay we're up to 96 in antioch and danville 93 degrees. now the seven-day forecast, coming up at the bottom of the screen, you'll want to take a look at what's ahead for the weekend and early next week. san mateo will be up to 80 degrees today. the embarcadero 76. so it does stay cool and very comfortable along the coastline, while we'll be in the upper 90s for napa today. and looking out the window in san jose and you're getting ready for the day, it will be a day, again, for some short sleeves and shorts as we will have some really hot temperatures. it's really not even all that
4:48 am
cool this morning as you step out the door. if you want to find somewhere much more comfortable, escaping from that valley heat heading to santa cruz today, it will only reach into the mid-70s, so it's going to be really nice there. also some upper 70s for san francisco. we keep those kinds of temperatures into next week. a little bit of some patchy fog also along the coastline will make it cool, so bring a jacket for some of the coast. as we look at the valley temperatures, it will be up to 95 today, 98 degrees tomorrow. that begins the dangerous heat with the heat advisories in effect and it continues all throughout next week. and mike says it's a great start to the friday commute. >> again, distracting from the three-digit numbers that you saw on the four days next week. we're looking at a great commute. let's look at the overall bay and we're seeing a smooth flow of traffic, although this shows up in various patches on 280 as crews move out of the area north the wood side shows up with a
4:49 am
little slowing but i'll track that closely. a smooth drive over towards the bay bridge at the maze and no major problems there. i'll show you a live picture in san rafael. we do have a smooth flow of traffic but there's a good amount of cars heading south all the way across the golden gate bridge. clear view there. let's get a clear view of the travel times. if you're traveling from castro valley down to fremont, you can use 680 because the earlier slowing that we saw on the sensors, that has cleared up. a crash had cleared up just south heading down through fremont. it's about the same amount of time whether you go 680 or 880. to join the waze team, get the app and go to the magnifying glass and go to nbc and that's how we share the information. doctors say the american student freed this week from north korea is now in a state of unresponsive wakefulness and has shown no signs of understanding
4:50 am
verbal commands. otto warmbier is now in a cincinnati hospital. he arrived in a coma. north korea said because of botulism and a sleeping pill. yesterday his father held a news conference wearing the sports coast once worn by his son in that video. he cast doubt on the the explanation that cincinnati doctors supported. >> even if you believe their explanation of botulism and a sleeping pill causing the coma, and we don't, there is no excuse for any civilized nation to have kept his condition secret. >> he is now getting better care in cincinnati. warmbier was sentenced last year for 15 years hard labor. he was accused of stealing a propaganda banner. >> those poor parents, seriously. 4:50 right now. environmentalists outraged by the trump administration after the elimination of an office that was working on clean energy. "the new york times" reporting this morning the department of energy closing the office of international climate and technology and also eliminating
4:51 am
its 11 staff positions. that office opened in 2010 and works with other countries in developing clean energy technology. the department of energy says it's consolidating duplicate programs. california is showing no signs of slowing down when it comes to fighting climate change. state regulators adopted the strictest rules in the nation now requiring utilities to plug up leaks in natural gas lines. greenhouse gases are emitted from those leaks and the new rule looks to cut 40% of those gases released by 2030. this means pg&e and others have to patch some 10,000 leaks not considered a threat before. kris, it turns out that plate tectonics might not be the only thing that triggers california's earthquakes. a new study by uc berkeley researchers suggest that snow and rain during the winter months could actually act at weight on california's mountains. then when the state dries out in the summer months, that could lead to the earth's crust rebounding, causing a seasonal
4:52 am
uptick in those quakes. maybe there is some truth to the term earthquake weather after all. let's head outside and take a peek. oracle arena still reeling from the big win, or at least the dub nation is. a study done in oakland is showing how pollution can impact a city block by block. the city done by the environmental defense fund shows air quality can vary tremendously within a city. you maybe notice it yourself. researchers used google street cars to collect that data and they believe the results could help people avoid some of the most polluted areas. >> micropollution. we'll show you one big reason why you will be glad that you can't smell through your tv as you brush your teeth this morning. >> i'm curious to see what that is, that stinky flower. new numbers just in from the warriors parade. b.a.r.t. says more than 487,000 people used their train. that's about 3% less than it was
4:53 am
in 2015. however, it is still the number six day for the transit agency. plus the pentagon is going to be sending 4,000 more american troops to afghanistan. that deployment is going to be the largest show of american manpower under president trump. we're back with more news in two minutes. who are these people?
4:54 am
the energy conscious people among us say small actions can add up to something... humongous. a little thing here. a little thing there. starts to feel like a badge maybe millions can wear. who are all these caretakers, advocates too? turns out, it's californians it's me and it's you. don't stop now, it's easy to add to the routine. join energy upgrade california and do your thing.

4:56 am
strangest question you're going to get all day. can you handle the stench of rotting flesh? hopefully you never have to ponder that. the famous smelly flower is back in bloom in san francisco. this only happens every seven to ten years, so it is definitely something you don't want to miss, right, kris? lovingly called the corpse flower, the six-foot tall plant started blooming late yesterday. that is from sumatra, indonesia, and it's at the conservator of flowers in golden gate park. if you want to go smell that, you better go in a hurry because the bloom lasts only another three or four day. >> i would love to see the scale of it but the rotting flesh smell, no, thanks. >> a six-foot tall flower is pretty crazy. >> that's big enough to be a bouteniere for you. >> as we head into the day in oakland, we start out with
