37,000 cust had mers but, again, about 5,000 still with no power. rick boone is live for people getting ready for work. >> reporter: a lot of people are waking up this morning and the first thing they're doing is flipping on lights to make sure they're working. more than 6,000 people lost power just yesterday possibly due to running their air conditioners. businesses lost the power as well. coming up in a few hours pg&e will determine if heat is the reason causing all these power outages and also discussing how to avoid more outages happening in the future. that meeting just ahead. across the bay people wept to beaches to escape the heat this weekend but places cooler like san mateo was affected almost 75,000 lost power on father's day. >> we just got back from the lake. we got some sun burns going on

you're looking at london. all of this happened short ly after midnight as worshippers had just finished prayers during t the holy month of ramadan. the driver, a 48-year-old man, arrested on scene. a group of people actually captured him and pinned him down until police could get there. he said he was going to kill all muslims. one person did die at the scene. it's unclear if it was caused by this attack. a coast guard crew will be docking here in the bay area after a massive 17,000-pound drug bust. the crew of the coast guard cutter posed with what is a haul of seized cocaine before it offloaded it. it was seize d coast the last to months.

estimated street value is $266 million. the investigation continues this morning into a deadly sh t shooting that happened over the weekend in concord. police say this happened about 2:00 saturday morning in the downtown area of the city right near the brendan theater. they tried to save the victim's life but he did succumb to his injuries. his name has not been released. san mateo leaders will debate banninging smoking in apartment complexes. recreational use will be legal throughout the state. san mateo councilmembers are discussing the dangers of second-hand smoke as it relates to marijuana. if approved the new ban would apply to multiunit residences. >> palo al it to leaders are looking to approve a program. it's reported councilmembers are going to sign off on a residents

san jose one of many areas that saw explosive temperatures this weekend, and it is not going to end right now. kari will have much more on that. >> for those who live in los gatos, gridlocked traffic. drivers head iing to the beach often try to bypass traffic by winding through their neighborhoods and this is what it looked like. the video shot by a homeowner who says will were so many cars on her street she couldn't even back out of her driveway. ways to divert the traffic. >> and they need to get as many people to the coastline because that's one of the key places you could go for actual relief. >> san francisco was fairly nice until you went right on the other side to the embarcadero. it was hot there and along that immediate coastline that's the only place you can find relief. as we start out this morning i'm showing you radar.

we have some out flow. it was just enough to produce thunder and lightning, some isolated rain and we're still seeing very light amounts of rain occurring over the hills but we have to watch the radar for that potential of some lightning. it is over the hills. it will not affect you as you head out. you know that some dry lightning is not good news. as we go to the next hour or so and seeing this wind down. this is what it feels like as you head out the door. 73 degrees and our average high temperature is in the upper 70s so we start out in the low 70s this morning. it feels very muggy at 61 degrees in san francisco. and the north bay feel a muggy 64 degrees. we're heading into the upper 90s. wouldn't be surprised if a few areas hit 100 again today but

we'll see more widespread 100-degree readings and also some interior parts while haywood will be up to 93 degrees. san francisco up to 83 on the embarcadero. 103 in novato. still looking at some really hot weather as we go into this afternoon so you're looking out the window and, of course, getting ready for the day, another day for lightweight, light colored clothinging, something that's very breathable and will help keep you cool in all of this heat. we always advise you to make sure you drinks lots of water as you're out there and about today even if you don't feel thirsty and we broke a lot of records yesterday just blowing them out of the water. san rafael up to 105 degrees when the old record was 98. you can look at these numbers and see how hot it was yesterday

and know that it will still be very hot today up to 83 degrees in san francisco and some upper 70s the next few days. the hottest day in the forecast will be on thursday and the inland areas 105 degrees. stick this out a little while longer. that cooldown will be very slow to happen as we go through this week. mike, you're tracking a crash? >> mostly clear as you talk about the summer temperatures and the summer traffic flow as well but we do have an early crash. there is a crash in the middle of the roadway. we will track that because in the middle of the freeway is not where you want the cars. the b.a.r.t. cars are moving on time. i know it's monday but reminding people if you're parking at the

it is 4:55 right now. we're looking out our window he this morning in san rafael. it was hot there. some folks are still in the dark. we had pg&e power outages. we'll talk about that. be aware this heat wave continues. >> a record 105 over the weekend. much more tolerable at the beach here. people will be flocking to the beach this week, try to avoid the heat this is video of some of the crowds at the boardwalk from over the weekend. >> developing in southern california despite the heat wave firefighters are dwayning crucial ground on two brushfires there. this fire at castaic lake has destroyed two out buildings not too far from magic mountain. tts only 10% contained. firefighters are out fighting

the flames and battling the heat, too. a much smaller fire in san bernardino county is 50% contained. only 11 acres have burned there so far. a 26-year-old woman has died in the sequoia national forest after falling into a creek along the park's twin lakes. park rangers say the woman fell and then was swept downstream. this is the third river-related death in the park this year and the 11th in california since the snowpack started melting in may. >> all right. a sweltering start here to summer and that is going to continue, tracking your forecast. what are we in store for? >> more days of 100-degree readings away from areas like san francisco where we've had -- we haven't had weather this hot since june of 2008. we're going to break some more records and we'll talk more about that coming up next. another bridge, the san mateo bridge, traffic flowing.

outside right now at some different vantage points across the bay area. everywhere is going to be feeling like summer once again today. good morning on this monday. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. that's one of the few spots where it will be cool. >> one of the areas not included in that heat advisory or excessive heat warning through thursday. we did have some isolated lightning strikes overnight. we had some thunderstorms blow up over the sierra. that warm, humid air made it into the bay area. some lightning between union city and hayward shortly after midnight. that is where the lightning occurred. now things are quieting down.
