different vantage points across the bay area. everywhere is going to be feeling like summer once again today. good morning on this monday. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. that's one of the few spots where it will be cool. >> one of the areas not included in that heat advisory or excessive heat warning through thursday. we did have some isolated lightning strikes overnight. we had some thunderstorms blow up over the sierra. that warm, humid air made it into the bay area. some lightning between union city and hayward shortly after midnight. that is where the lightning occurred. now things are quieting down.

it will not affect you and we still see that air on the move. the heat advisory in effect for all areas shaded in orange, that does not include san francisco or parts of the inner bay. it will be hot to the valleys. an excessive heat warning in effect. 105 degrees. i'll talk more about what to expect as we go through as this heat wave continues coming up. >> that's right, kari, the flat tire caused by a tire in the roadway so apparently some debr debris, this issue, again, the crash on the shoulder blocking the slow lane as well by the person fixing the tire. that has to be a tough situation. that activity caused some slowing as you head past sfo

approaching 380, that just appeared on our speed sensors. watch for that activity. we'll continue to update you. slowing to your left. travel times at the minimum. kris? >> this morning fire crews are ready to move out within a moment's notice. more scorching temperatures are in the forecast meaning extremely high fire danger. today in the bay's pete sura it tos, pete, we had that lightning overnight, too. >> reporter: good morning to you, kris. as we reported all morning long we've seen those lightning strikes more towards the south bay. we're standing here off tunnel road. you can see off the fire chart the fire danger today is at the high mark so of course this is a

high danger area when it comes to fire concerns with things starting to heat up. let's show you some video. this was from over the weekend not too far here as is an area of concern with all of the brush, this takinging place along highway 13. now the cause of this fire is under investigation and it took firefighters nearly three hours to knock the fire out but it could be related to some of the heat we saw in this area over the weekend. cal fire offers these tips when it comes to keeping your property safe during fire season. a few points i want to point out, create a defensible space which is a buffer between your property and surrounding grass area which could stop the spread of wildfire. they say to harden your homes, are reroof your home with metal or tile, protecting vents, even installing dual pane windows and having a fire extinguisher ready to go. and a fire safe landscape. that's strategically placing fire safe plants to resist the spread of fire. you can pick those up from a local nursery. as things continue to heat up this will be an area of concern

for firefighters all around the bay area. we're live in oakland hills. very good tips in there, pete. thank you very much. you can keep track of the weather in your area by downloading our free app. you can track those temperatures right to your neighborhood. right now we are following breaking news out of london this morning. police continuing to question the man arrested in the city's latest terror attack. you're about to see live pictures where police say the suspect drove a van. there is the live picture. standing guard that van that was driven into a group of people, worshippers, gathered outside a prayer ceremony during ramadan. >> ten people were injured. it happened shortly after midnight lon time. it's morning now. the driver, a 48-year-old man, was arrested after a group of people captured him. witnesses report that the driver was laughing after he crashed and saying i'm going to kill all

muslims. >> he knew exactly what he was doing. he waited outside the mosque. he knew exactly what happened we finished prayers. he plowed into them. >> london's prime minister theresa may says the attack is every bit as sickening as the other recent attacks. one person did die at the scene but investigators say it's unclear if that person's death was directly caused by the attack. back at home now and this morning we could learn more information about a police shooting on the bay bridge this weekend, a shooting that halted eastbound traffic for hours on sunday. san francisco's chp says officers were at the scene of a crash east of the tunnel when a red car drove around traffic towards police officers. the driver allegedly didn't follow commands to stop and one officer opened fire. the suspect was taken to the hospital with injuries. it's not clear how badly he was

wounded. passengers in the car were not injured. right now check out hancock. he is a k-9 with the concord police department who was bitten badly by a pit bull while officers were serving a search warrant. this happened yesterday. one of the officers shot and killed the pit bull to save hancock's life. happening today councilmembers in san mateo are expected to sign off on a deal to equip police officers with body worn cams are cam are s. the city is poised to spend close to $700,000. they hope to have it up and running by the fall. a public hearing on raising sewer rates. that city is considering raising rates by 30% to help pay for infrastructure improvements. the hearing will discuss the city's clean water program. tonight's meeting is at city hall at 7:00. as we talk this morning with

pete suratos, breaking news just in to our newsroom. take a look at this. there is a fire burning in benicia just off 680 near goodyear road. fire crews say they have called for more aid. that fire was reported just before 5:00 this morning. right now we do not have word whether or not this is near any homes or businesses. we just know that it is right off the highway. that's some of the video just in to our newsroom. we're sending a crew to the scene and we'll have much more coming up. >> there is a lot of dry vegetation. firefighters were saying they were preparing for this situation, kari. more risk of wildfires, unfortunately, and now as we look at how hot it will be today in spots like sonoma and napa in the mid-70s and then as we go to the early afternoon already in the upper 80s and upper 90s today. cooler temperatures. we have some much cooler air along the coast. half moon bay will see those temperatures today reaching near

70 degrees with some clouds near the coast throughout the day so that will help cool it down, that marine layer returning there. we will talk about what else to expect as we tocontinue to deal a very cool coast and sizzling temperatures inland coming up in about a few minutes. but as we head over to mike now you have an update on what's happening on the roadways. >> that's right, kari. the first thing is here on the peninsula between sfo and 380 we saw all that slowing that popped up the last time we took this report. traffic slowing. it's not a complete traffic break to clear tire debris from the roadway. that has cleared. i think the slow end is still blocked, again, going on there after some debris was cleared to the center divide. nice, easy flow of traffic. we do see more cars across the bay bridge, a little slowing around the treasure island area. not uncommon. up here in benecia, no lanes are

we're under a micro climate weather alert because we're tracking high heat again for the bay area. it's 5:12 after sun rises on this very humid and mild morning. we will have temperatures starting out in the 70s. looking at the temperature trend for willow glenn we'll be at 87 degrees into the mid-90s today. we'll talk about what's ahead as we continue on with this high heat coming up in about five minutes. and we're being looking at travel times out of the

tri-valley. they're hot all over the area and now two fires off 680 in the north bay. 5:12 now and new this morning the city of london remembers the dozens of lives lost in a devastating high-rise apartment fire. a moment of silence was held just this morning as the death toll rose to 79 people. meantime we are getting our first look at the aftermath left from those flames. london metropolitan police released video and still photos showing the charred ruins. experts believe the material used to construct the building may have helped the flames to spread. two british cabinet ministers say the materials used in a renovation may have been banned under british building regulation. 5:13 and, kris, portugal has declared three days of mourning in a wildfire that ended up killing dozens of people in the country, many of whom were trapped inside of their cars. that fire is one of several still burning in rural central portugal about roughly 100 miles

northeast of lisbon. saturday it became a deathtrap for people just trying to evacuate. in all 62 people died. many of those victims were caught when flames spilled over a roadway. firefighters believe that lightning might be what started it. at this point leaders in portugal are only concerned about the lives lost. >> translator: i don't want to talk yet about the cause of the fire because we are facing the greatest tragedy of human lives. so what we must do now is to calmly provide all the resources to fight the fire. >> soldiers right now are being deployed to help battle the fire which is being called the nation's worst in more than a half century. new developments this morning in a tragic accident at sea. seven sailors are now confirmed dead after a u.s. navy ship collided with a cargo ship. and this morning we're learning two of the men were from california. "uss fitzgerald" was towed back

after the accident. carlos victor was from chula vista and alexander douglas from san diego are among the dead. right now there are several investigations to try to determine exactly why and how the collision happened. >> as to how much warning they had, i don't know. that will be found out during the investigation. it was a significant impact the crew had to fight very hard to keep the ship afloat. >> it took 16 hours to tow the ship back to port. kris, right now youtube taking new measures to crack down on extremist content. general counsel outlined four steps the company is taking to identify and take down videos related to terrorism that includes increasing number of experts who hunt down and flag content to be removed. google's massive development plan for downtown san jose are moving forward.

the city council will decide whether to open negotiations with the mountain view company. google is looking to office and retail space and plans the development could be five times the size of valley fair mall. >> wow. a popular route to yosemite back open this morning. park officials say el portal did reopen after a rock slide. the mess was enough to cover about six football fields. travelers are being warned to drive slowly because it will be covered in it gravel. kris, fan, portable, ac units, kiddie pools, whatever you've got flying off the shelves as people are trying to prepare themselves. >> two people using the kiddie pools to cool off pets not just for the kids. some south bay stores saw a huge rush as temperatures reached triple digits.

backyard umbrellas a popular item. we checked with a father trying to keep his newborn twins cool. >> it's hard to get them to sleep period, so when it's hot it makes it more difficult. we do our best to keep them cool. >> let me tell you, dad, it's not just the heat. he's right. it is hard to get those newborns to sleep. employees told us 85% of the customers they say yesterday were buying fans. >> i hope they weren't raising prices because of the demand. they were flying off store shelves. not enough to go around. i can't hear you because i'm deaf from all the fans in my house. >> unfortunately, those fans are just blowing around a lot of hot air. that's the kind of with weather we've been having to struggle through especially yesterday. here is a live look outside as you get ready to head out.

looking live as the sun rises all clear now and then get a look at the seven-day forecast. you'll see more very hot temperatures over the next few days if we can make it through to the weekend we will have some slightly lower temperatures. it's 74 degrees. that's starting out the day. so much humidity blowing away  from the sierra. that threat is diminishing now that the sun is rising. we have this heat advisory in effect. san jose included in that heat advisory continues until thursday night and then we have solano county where there is an excessive heat warning in effect as our temperatures there have been making it over 100 degrees. you need to limit your outdoor

time and try to get in air conditioning. i don't think we'll see triple digits like yesterday but still a lot of them in the tri-valley, the delta and haywood up to 93 degrees. the peninsula, 72. 87 in san mateo. up to 97 degrees in sonoma today and you may in the upper 70s just beautiful, nice, refreshing breezes. you might want to take a dip in it the water, too. we are going to see those temperatures in the low 80s over the next few days. and then look at the weekend. it will get cooler there but it won't be that much cooler inland. up to 97 degrees on friday.

carolina. a gunman opened fire on a crowd overnight. it is video that might be disturbing. you can hear just how many shots were fired as several people were struck. it happened as a group of people into a fight. thankfully none of the injuries were life threatening, but the gunman did carjack a car after the shooting. he was caught a short time later. >> it may seem like a hairy hitchhiker out looking for a ride, that is a big, black bear coming to get a closer look at the deputy and his stopped patrol car, coming right up to the car. you hear the sound effects, opening the door. the deputy at one point shouted, hey, buddy. that's a little close for comfort. the bear seemed to want to hang out with his newfound friend but

called in for more reinforcement. it was just reported. no word yet whether it's near homes or businesses. in this kind of weather we know it's a tinderbox. a live crew and our sky ranger is heading to the scene right now as well. the fire come as the rest of the bay area remains under a heat advisory. we're looking live at downtown san jose, one of the hot spots. there were some cool spots from the beaches areas. we'll talk about that as the heat wave continues today. >> a lot to get in there. >> i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> just about everything is a hot spot except the coastline and san francisco. even san francisco, kari, was almost 90 degrees yesterday. >> now on the western side of the city the temperatures stayed in the 60s all day, and looking right now at twin peaks we're at 60 degrees. you see some clouds moving

across the sky. let me show you what it feels like as you get ready to step out on this monday morning. we're in the 70s in the tri-valley. it didn't cool down that much considering how hot the temperatures got yesterday and it feels humid, too, so we start out with temperatures that are closer to our average high temperature for this time of year and it's a nice, cool 60 degrees in san francisco. coming up i'll show you relief in the weekend forecast as we continue on with these heat advisories coming up in a few minutes. mike takes us out on the roadways. >> which will be a distraction. a visual hazard is what we call it. most of the roadway showing a smooth flow of traffic. i did hear about a new crash. i'll talk about palo alto as i get more details in the next break we have here. here is where the fire is just off 680. kris told but it. that is presenting a visual distraction. coming down southbound 680 approaching the benicia bridge.

it's across the freeway but not far from the refinery. we do have lake herman road which is popular as well. we continue to follow that. i also want to show you the bay bridge to plaza. the metering lights are on. the backup on the toll plaza. 532 extends back past west grand. >> that is some sun rise there, mike. thank you very much. thousands of people still with no relief right now from the heat this morning. power outages knocked out electricity throughout the bay area. >> i didn't realize how lucky i was to have power. i was in one of those hot spots. at last check about an hour ago the south bay is still the most affected area with customers and businesses without power followed by the east bay. >> sporadic outages in the east bay and north bay. pg&e was able to restore power to 37,000 customers. rick boone joining us live in livermore with the impact on

folks just trying to get ready for work. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. folks are waking up this morning and i guess the first thing they're wondering, is my power back on so i can stay cool as i he had to my car and turn on the ac there. power is starting to come back up in the livermore area finally after thousands lost it. many people are still without power as you indicated the pg&e is still determining if the heat is causing the grid to fail in some parts and the agency is a couple hours from now will be discussing how to avoid more outages. across the bay people went to beaches to escape the heat. places closer like san mateo lost almost 75,000 people without power on father's day. >> we just got back from the lake. we have some sun burns going on. we didn't have the luxury of the

fans. >> the lights went out. >> reporter: and right now looks like here in downtown livermore power doesn't seem to be out at all. we haven't seen any particular outages. but certainly in some areas there's a few outages according to the pg&e website and that will be going on throughout the day. their goal is to get the power back up. they know it's another warm day, listening to kari hall. rick boone for today in the bay. >> rick, thank you so much. 5. . 34. more testimony expected in the russia investigation. both congressional intelligence committees are meeting on wednesday. this as the president's lawyer insists he is not being investigated. "today in the bay's" tracie potts joins us live with what president trump is now saying about the investigation. tracey? >> reporter: the president says he is being investigated. his attorney says he is not and

that discrepancy raising more questions whether the fbi is really looking at president trump for possible obstruction of justice. president trump's personal attorney insists the president is not a target of the fbi's russia investigation. >> there is not an investigation of the president of the united states, period. the president is not under investigation. president he has not the been notified by anyone that he's under investigation. >> reporter: this despite president trump's tweet calling it a witch-hunt. >> trump has a compulsion to counterattack. and it's very pugnacious. i don't think it serves him well. >> the fbi doesn't sit around all day and read tweets. they will do their job. >> reporter: congress wants to know whether russia clued ed wih the trump team to interfere with the presidential election. >> i'm not prepared to say there's proof you could take to a jury but there is enough that we ought to be investigating. >> reporter: on wednesday the house intelligence committee hears from obama, homeland

security secretary johnson. >> a lot of people have said when do you think you'll be done? maybe the end of the year. >> reporter: meantime, the senate is also working on health care. the majority leader says he'll pitch a foo plan in two weeks. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. and now to breaking news out of london where police continue to question a man they arrested in the city's latest terror attack. ten people were injured after the suspect drove a van into a group of worshippers outside a mosque. you're looking at live pictures from the area. this happened shortly after midnight london time as worshippers had just finished prayers during the holy month of ramadan. the driver, a 48-year-old man, was arrested on the scene after a group of people captured him and held him until police arrived on scene. witnesses say the driver was laughing after he crashed saying, i'm going to kill all muslim. one person did die at the scene. it's not clear whether that

person's death directly caused by the attack. also happening today a coast guard crew will be docking here in the bay area after a massive 17,000-pound drug bust. the crew of the coast guard cutter posted its haul of the seized cocaine last week. this is what it looks like. they're due back at home in alameda today. that cocaine was seized off central america over the last two months and estimated street value is $266 million. the investigation continues this morning into a deadly shooting in cord over the weekend. police say it happened about 2:00 saturday morning in the downtown area of concord. officers found a victim and tried to save him, but he died at the scene. as of right now his name has not been released. we do know a s.w.a.t. team arrested the suspect at his house in oakland. happening today san mateo leaders will debate banning the smoking of marijuana in apartment complexes.

starting in january recreational marijuana use will be legal throughout the state. san mateo councilmembers now consider dangers of second-hand smoke as it applies to pot. if approved it would extend to all multiunit residences regardless of size. palo alto leaders reportedly planning on approving a new permit program. reporting councilmembers are signing off on a resident parking plan for the south gate neighborhood which is right near palo alto high school. it's not far away from stanford's campus. parking will be restricted for two hours for anybody without a park iing permit. all right, folks. live pictures here this is pay low aalto where typically we have light volume of traffic and it is relatively light but at the top of your screen, look at this. some flashing lights and i believe there's still a cluster going on here approaching

university where we typically show you. now that may be due to the crash i was talking about. look at the map and we see there is slowing heading up over to the camera shot. it may be that crash because there's a second crash in the area. we might be seeing one further north, that second one might be just as i approach the embarcadero. we're trying to get more detail but the slow sensors are enough to he show you you will have slowing mountain view up into pay low l palo alto. there may be some debris in the roadway left over after an earlier report. we'll check on that from chp as well. to the bay bridge, your travel times. the top number has gone from 14 to 18 minutes. we've had some slowing on the upper east shoreway and further north from that we are watching the effects of the fire. >> the visual from the highway. >> i believe the smoke. the pd is telling us there's slowing. this is going to continue

that benicia fire is what firefighters were preparing for and fearing would happen during this heat wave. >> we are going to have more risk of that as we go into the next several days, high heat, and even the weekend look iing very warm weather inland. up to 93 degrees which i guess is better than 103. but we only bring it down just a little bit considering that it's still going to be very hot and nice and cool along the coast. you may be making plans to head somewhere like pacifica and up to 68 degrees. 81 for the bay and still very warm on sunday. you may be loading up the car. we see some snow. live looking at the sierra and it's going to be in the low 80s. so really not that much better. at least you can find some cool places to go. if you are going to santa cruz, in the low 70s friday.

it is 5:44. an amazing sun rise this morning with some very humid conditions as you get ready to step out the door. and some warm temperatures already at 72 degrees heading up to 96. i want to show you the temperature trend as we go through the day. we will be in the mid-70s already by 7:00. air conditioners on as we go into late morning. and it continues to blast as the highs reach into the 90s. and still some triple digits for the valleys. i'll talk more about that and look ahead to the of the week coming up in five minutes. and your travel time starting it to show a little more slowing. your commute is kicking in. i'm trying to get you a really good shot of the peninsula. i can see more crash activity. mike, kari, thank you very

much. for those who live in los gatos, a familiar story play iing out again. the hot weather comes in, that means gridlocked traffic. drivers try to wind through neighborhoods. a homeowner said she could not back out of her driveway. the city is looking into ways to divert that traffic during the weekend. developing this morning in southern california despite the heat wave firefighters are gaining critical ground on two brushfires there. this fire is near casaic lake. you may have passed by if you drive down i-5 to magic mountain in valencia. it has destroyed two out buildings and at last check is only 10% contained. there's another smaller fire burning in the wright wood area of san bernardino county that is 50% contained. only 11 acres burned there so

far. certainly a sign of what is to come.iq?; this chase span ned about two ad a half hours, went through ten different cities. the car finally got stuck when the driver tried to cross the field. ultimately the suspect surrendered. 5:46. new video taking matters into his own hands, that is what the sarasota, florida, man did with a 2x4. this happened about 5:00 in the morning yesterday. five men showing up with five. the homeowner went after them. a woman comes in the scene. he was able it to disarm and hold down one of the suspects

until police arrived. all five were arrested. >> wow. bill cosby's sexual assault trial may have ended in a mistrial. the judge is saying the next trial could start in about three months. the trial ended in a mistrial on saturday after jurors remained deadlocked. kocosby still faces sexual assat charges, accused of drugging and poe lesing andrea constand. prosecutors remain confident. a live picture right now. these are the first images we are getting in of a vegetation fire we've been following since 5:00 this morning happening in benicia. now in the light of the day through sky ranger we are seeing that, in fact, it does look like there are some nearby homes, perhaps cars and maybe mobile homes nearby. this is a relatively open space area off 680 and goodyear road.

it seems they are getting a handle on the fire. flames were absolutely burst this morning just before 5:00 on 680. this is something pete suratos is heading to get an update. they had to call in for extra aid. >> they were calling in for extra aid. we do know this is a fire that could take a run on dry grass, dry brush and spread very fast. firefighters leading up to the start of the heat wave were telling us they were preparing and talking to departments all around the bay area. sky ranger is overhead. pete suratos is on the ground. we'll get more information for you as we can. >> i hope we can get this to give you notice. 680 to the north of there we saw slowing. i think we can show that in the traffic report. there it is off the freeway. a lot of smoke and flames visible.

very close to 680. >> we had some lightning early this morning. i was looking through the radar data and i don't show any cloud-to-ground lightning in that area but some south of hayward. still a very active scene there and some low humidity and some high heat that we'll have to deal with as we go through the day. looking at the fire risk over the next several days, thick brush fire risk very high and humidity creates an even higher risk of seeing the wildfires. we'll see humidity 28 to 63%. the wind makes that risk moderate. looking live at tiberon. one of the areas heating up again today we're starting out the morning at 74 degrees and

right now going through a heat wave. in utah a large wildfire issening homes in a small resort town. everybody in the town has been evacuated. that fire spread to about 1,000 acres at this point. it is dangerously close to some homes and other buildings there. at least one home has already been destroyed. investigators say the fire was, quote, human caused. they have not specified how it started. happening today a service will be held for the three people who were killed in the u.p.s. shooting rampage. that happened last wednesday at a u.p.s. sorting center in the city. an interfaith prayer service will be held at noon today on san bruno avenue right near that facility. investigators say a ups employee jimmy lam went in killing three other employees, which he targeted, before then turning the gun on himself. also happening today at least one of the suspects accused of attacking a lyft driver on highway 101 is due in court. officers arrested three men last
