and a live look outside now from the south bay. starting our day in san jose, a live look outside right now from the south bay. did you make it through yesterday's heat? really, really rough one. temperatures cooling off a little bit in some parts getting up early like right now but the interior valleys will be scorching. terry has a full look at the forecast. good morning to you. thank you for joining us. >> a lot of people probably wanted to take a dunk when the temperatures started to rise. >> dunk? be careful. >> end ball. whatever it is? >> yes. that's exactly what i did yesterday. a dip. yes. a cool dip. >> makes more sense. i'll give you that one. >> we say the cement pond. >> all right.

>> it is so hot out there. that's what we have had to deal with in the valleys but we'll see the return of fog in san francisco and coastline to bring down the temperatures a few more degrees. but we are still under that heat advisory for all of the areas here shaded in red and the bright pink indicates where there's excessive heat warnings in effect. we start out this morning, temperatures mostly in the mid-60s with highs reaching the triple digits inland. i'll talk more about that but mike has an issue leaving san francisco. >> right. easy sensory reads all over the bay. eastbound to 80 just over the skyway, reports of a disabled vehicle, a big truck, flat tire. we'll track that. meanwhile, over to the maze and the city from the east bay, no delays to the bay bridge. back to you. >> thank you very much. 4:31. breaking news just into the

newsroom. an active search for for a sect in fremont. it's near harvey community park. bob joining us on the phone. you are trying to find where the police activity is happening. what are you learning? >> reporter: good morning to you. this is a series of lake streets. lake immediate, lake ontario, lake erie, residential neighborhood borders up against 880 here in fremont not far from -- there is a heavy police presence here. a number of squad cars with the lights on and k-9 units, a police officer on the scene tell us they're looking for two suspects, would not tell us what they're suspected of doing. until about 20 minutes ago, police had a chopper up above the area that had been circling looking for these people but then look off. there's an ambulance also on stand by in case something happens. i asked the people in ambulance,

did the police tell you what you're on stand by for? they said, no. law enforcement stand by. they don't know who they're looking for, as well. but this small part of this neighborhood has a heavy police presence as officers are trying to again find two suspects, the crime unknown. reporting live here in fremont, bob redell, today in the bay. >> stay tuned. thank you very much for the update. 4:33, coverage continues with parts of the bay area experiencing sweltering temperatures. >> not only the heat triggering fires, power outages and trees. >> chris sanchez joins us live with the reason why. room, kris. >> reporter: good morning. the trees are very thirsty and that means they're very heavy. our producer lindsay nearly blocked in the parking lot by a fallen branch and a branch across a car and fortunately no

one was injured but the car was pretty banged up and if someone was on the sidewalk along the same time it could have been a different story. we did talk with a certified arborist saying when it's really hot as it's been the trees pull in as much water as they can and then they can't release it quickly enough and makes the branches heavy and can come down. there's signs of tree trouble. dead trees are particularly susceptible to falling. broken branches to come down unexpectantly. look for signs of diseases like mushrooms or cork and look for any leaning of more than 10 degrees. that means there could be trouble underground. i'll post more information about tree safety from the u.s. forest service on my facebook page so you can check that, as well. but in this heat we can expect to see more scenes like this in oakland. in oakland, the good news is

though that branch blocked traffic and brought down a nest with baby birds inside, the birds were rescued safely. coming up, i'll show you what the certified arborist says about when you need to call in an expert and find an expert to do that job safely. kris sanchez, today in the bay. >> thank you. you can keep track of the heat by downloading our nbc bay area app, it is free and monitor the temperatures across the bay including your neighborhood. some chilling new details now to report on the challenges the firefighters faced the night of the deadly ghost ship fire. the city of oakland just issued a new 50-page report on last year's fire that killed 36 people. among the revelations in the report, that arriving firefighters had no idea that the building was actually packed with people who are attending that makeshift concert. seven victims were found on the second floor. we learned that 29 were found on the ground floor. some underneath the collapsed

the top spot, the best place. >> right in our backyard. let's go. north bay city is voted the best small town to visit. list of 15 towns was compiled by "u.s. news & world report" looking at cities with less than 100,000 people, restaurants and attractions like wineries. also judged on the character of the town. sonoma said to have it all. lake tahoe region took the fifth spot and monterey at number six. >> what's incredible is the diversity of the places around the bay area. tahoe, sonoma. >> right now we need somewhere cool. coming up, the heat wave continues today. any relief in sight, kari? >> it takes a while for the inland valleys. looking at the temperature trend today for coupety no, we start out in the upper 70s. already at 9:00 in the morning and then seeing the temperatures reach into the low 90s today. another day with well above average temperatures and possibly near records.

a live look right now at the "s" curve in san rafael. the ups and downs of this heat wave that we are closely tracking. some relief in parts of the bay area. i don't think it's that much. >> it's the places that already had the relief, really. i mean, the coastline. you only saw the temperatures there into the 70s and a little bit cooler today. and that's all thanks to the fog rolling back in. now, we are looking at temperatures in the trivalleys starting out this morning at 68 degrees. you know it's going to be a hot day. all right. 56 degrees right now in san francisco and looking at dublin in the east bay at 61 degrees starting out with clear skies. and we will see those high temperatures again reaching into the triple digits for the south

county and for much of the south bay and the upper 80s to lower 90s. and walnut creek, 100 degrees today. 104 in antioch. and hayward up to 83 degrees. we're looking at for the peninsula, half moon bay, a nice 65 degrees and you'll get some clearing today. while san matteo at 83 degrees. 73 in the mission district and for the north way, santa rosa, a high of 94 degrees. so you're getting ready for the day. give you the advice we have always given you during some hot weather. make sure you're wearing light colors and lightweight clothing to keep you nice and cool as we go into the next several days and we have some weather that makes it really dangerous so we stay hydrated, especially as you start out during the morning. you want to get the water going and that you want to continue that throughout the day. looking at some of the heat related tips, make sure you take frequent breaks and, of course, the hot car dangers that we see. we see a quick 30-degree

increase in the car within just a few minutes so never leave your pets or children in the car. going somewhere, find cool weather? check out santa cruz. near the coastline. the temperatures today reaching into the low 70s. also see some low 70s in san francisco today. upper 70s by tomorrow. the marine layer retreats and allows san francisco to warm up to 84 degrees on thursday. that will be the hottest day there and for the inland areas. reaching 106 degrees and by the weekend only coming down a few degrees and don't get much relief even into early next week. mike has better news for san francisco. >> temperatures are a good side and the other thing is the issue on to the lower deck, that's cleared eastbound 80 at 7th. no more disabled big rig there and good news getting on to the bay bridge. oakland, we have eastbound 80, 580 at golf links road.

workers are all about halfway finished having the new system fully in place for all of the schools by next may. >> i'm sure right now they like working air conditioning. great story here. high school students in california will always have a backup option for college. that is courtesy of a deal cut in the new state budget all applicants that qualify for cal state admission admitted to at least one school. mercury news reports right now 30,000 qualified students are turned away every single year because the school or schools they apply to simply don't have the space. they're full. cal state system has until next may for a redirection policy of students not accepted to the top choice. happening today, a crucial special election in georgia. voters in the 6th congressional district heading to the polls. tom price became the health and human services secretary.

voters choose between jon ossoff and karen handel. it is voiewed as a referendum o president trump. they're pouring in money and resources. live now look at our nation's capital where this morning republicans are going to be working fast and furious to put together a health care bill. this after democrats took to the senate floor overnight to blast republicans for holding closed door meetings to try to repeal the affordable care act. democrats expressed their fear that republican leaders will jam a new health care bill through the senate by the end of next week with little debate. some big happenings in san francisco. it is the most colorful week of the year in the city. city hall right now lit up in rainbow lights because pride week is officially here. they raised the lgbtq pride flag yesterday. this morning, flags are already lining on market street and organizers say in this political

welcome back. tuesday morning. one day in the books on this work week taking a live look outside right now. pretty clear driving in palo alto. another hot day in store. more on that momentarily. the heat hitting several states right now and said to be so hot in arizona american airlines canceling close to 40 flights today in and out of phoenix. when it is that hot hair density changes making it harder for planes to take off.

happening right now, the fight to contain flames growing in southern california continues this morning. right now, evacuations are under way in big bear. so-called holcombe fire at 850 acres this morning and 0% contained. this fire ignited in the heat wave that california experiencing right now. cause of the fire is unknown. 4:55 right now. in portugal, more than 1,000 firefighters still on the front lines battling that country's deadliest forest blaze ever. dozens of people are dead. that's one firefighter and at least a dozen victims trapped in their cars. the firefighter was helping people get out of the car. a lightning strike on a tree is probably what caused that fire. new video this morning. the aftermath of a massive dust storm in new mexico. caused a major pile-up that shut down a freeway. authorities say 25 vehicles were involved in the chain reaction
