"today in the bay" continues right now. good morning to you and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. we talk about self-driving, kind of a forecast on auto pilot for most of the week as it's really hot. >> the heat wave cannot end soon enough and unfortunately it's going do get even hotter before it gets cooler. we'll talk about that. let's just get you out the door on this morning. first day of summer and you don't need me to tell you that we've been in the triple did its for several days. tri-valley starting out at 67. looking live at pleasanton and the east bay. we have some patchy fog along the coastline. that will keep spots like half moon bay cool and inland valleys, no whatsoever. concord up to 103 degrees.

we'll talk about some more temperatures in 7 minutes. mike has an alert. >> it's hot. my alerts are in your forecast and other issues. metal debris in the roadway. overall, the speed sensors look great right now and seeing difficult slowing southbound 880 off the castro valley wide and heading to 92. right seeing the build for traffic also a report of metal debris in the middle of the roadway. if anybody hits that, could be an issue for all lanes and tracking that. chp says whatever it is, it's all cleared. meanwhile, toward the bay bridge, holding steady. slowing richmond to the obamacare ri curve. to you. >> mike, thank you very much. 6:01. out of fremont, this a very active scene in a fremont neighborhood where police officers searched overnight for two suspects who were on the run. the suspects were caught within the last hour. we brought you breaking coverage on "today in the bay" starting at 4:30. bob redell was the first

reporter on the scene live this morning. the suspects could have been connected to multiple burglaries. >> good morning to you, sam. fremont police tell us that the suspects burglarized at least two homes here in the neighborhood. this is lake ontario and lake kandwood. that intersection right there when where the squad cars are located. this neighborhood borders up against 880. a person called 911 around 2:30 this morning to report that people were trying to break into a neighbor's house. they were found on the house roof trying to get away. they caught one right off the bat and deployed an airport and canine dogs to help find the second one. we spoke to a woman whose family was in the home that was burglared. >> i called my father-in-law to alert him of what was going on and at the time they were whispering and given instruction to get on the floor because the

person is in the backyard. and i called them back again. he hung up. i called him back and they said that they were able to get the guy. and apparently there's total of three and i can't get into the street because they said that there's one more on the loose and they have canines looking around right now for the others. >> reporter: the latest information is that police did catch that second suspect just over an hour ago and they believe that they did everyone involved. just two people. there were eight people inside that home including four children ages 4 to 11 but we spoke to the woman there the mother of some of those children and she tells us that everyone's okay. just a little shaken up. reporting live here in fremont, bob redell, today in the bay. >> understandably. thank you very much. 6:03. now let's talk about what everyone's talking about, microclimate weather alert this morning, a flex alert issued as the heat wave continues in the bay area.

really across the state. >> all right. a flex lert, basically be flexible here. pete suratos is joining us. pete, air conditioners are working overtime. >> reporter: that's right. good morning to you, sam and laura. with this heat wave folks are turning up those ac units and really causing a strain on the city's power grid and as a result that can lead to power outages and why they're issuing this flex alert right now to tell folks to conserve energy over a couple of days. here's tips as far as conserving energy and point out this flex alert is voluntary and it's in place today and tomorrow. now, ways to conserve energy, set the thermostat at 78 degrees or higher and turn it off if you're away. also, you can cool down with fans and draw the drapes. also, turn off unnecessary lights or appliances not using them and use major appliances in the morning or late evening. the alert issued by the

california independent operator and said peak usage exceed 47,000 megawatts today and tomorrow. as i mentioned, this flex alert is voluntary and in place today and tomorrow between the hours of 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. live in walnut creek, pete suratos for today in the bay. >> thank you. take off the jacket later. 6:05. track the heat in the neighborhood downloading the nbc bay area app. it is free and you can monitor the temperatures across the bay. well, also happening today, making a footprint in san jose, today citiers will decide whether to enter an exclusive agreement with google for a mega complex near the sap center. the city says the project could create 20,000 new jobs but community groups are speaking out. they delivered a letter to the mayor's office saying they're concerned google will squeeze out low income workers and drive up rental prices. >> we want to make sure that the city negotiates a deal that's good for the community and not just google.

we want to make sure that the deal to bring the google project here includes affordable housing. >> the mayor says regardless of any deal, the city is already planning to build more affordable housing. so we are expected to see some demonstrators promising to gather tonight in berkeley ahead of a key city council vote of a controversial police training event. deciding whether or not to allow the officers to be part of the you are bab shield training program. urban shield involves four days of drills in and police teams from around the bay area and department receives special grant money to cover the training. so many questions of what happened to an american student while he was imprisoned in north korea. 22 otto warmbier died yesterday after at a cincinnati hospital. doctors say the university of virginia student had exive brain damage. north korean officials say he's been in a coma for more than a year after taking a sleeping

pill while battling botulism. a type of food poisoning. but doctors in cincinnati found no evidence of botulism. president trump spoke about warmbier's passing. >> a lot of bad things happened but at least we got him home to be with his parents where they were so happy to see him even though he was in very tough condition but he just passed away a little while ago. that's a brutal regime. and we'll be able to handle it. >> north korea sentenced warmbier to 15 years of hard labor for allegedly taking a poster off a wall. the chinese tour company that warmbier to north korea says it will no longer take americans there. 6:07. happening today, it is certainly beach weather and it will likely continue to be so for days here but this morning rescue teams

from san francisco and elsewhere around the bay area are gathering at ocean beach conducting water rescue demonstrations. it dramatizes hazards that include the rip currents and sneaker waves. today's demonstration takes place at 10:00 in the morning. at 6:08, now also a celebration to celebrate the first day of summer at ocean beach today. one of the cool places you can go and hang out. it is right now 57 degrees as you step out the door in the castro and all clear sun rise. we'll continue to see that sun heating things up as we go through the day. going out to oakland to attend the a's game this afternoon, our temperatures will be nice and comfortable there. starting out in the low 70s for some tailgating and then at first pitch will be at 68 degrees, dropping back into the low 60s later on tonight. vile a look at the temperature trend for willow glen coming up in three minutes but mike has a

crash in san jose. >> the traffic flow as you said, first day of summer. spring i think got a little bit of an overachieving there on the weekend. we are looking at summertime traffic flow, as well, a light flow throughout the bay and slowing from north 101 through san jose and typical spot and really a blip for 87. there's a crash 87 right around taylor. it sounds like both vehicles to the shoulder without any injury and problem and we'll track that very easy through silicon valley. look at that. over here for your east bay drive times. this is 680, 880 and remember that metal and wood debris south 880 and tracking that and no complications and no problems for the transit systems either. a great option and you can pick the right bus or right transit line to get wi-fi and stay on there all day. >> ride around and around and around. thanks a lot. coming up next on today in

heat up again today. looking live at the sun vise in san jose. beautiful start and fairly comfortable temperatures but it gets uncomfortable and fast. by noontime we are at 83 degrees in willow glen and will be in the lower 90s in afternoon. drink lots of water and try to stay cool. we'll talk about how hot it gets in the microclimate forecast coming up at 6:18. looking at the travel times, easy drive, the maze now just hit that half hour mark from highway 4 to the berkeley curve. the rest of the east bay moving well. we'll show you when's going on for the rest of the commute coming up. >> thank you very much, kari and mike. 6:13 right now. we are learning more about the man behind the latest terror attack in london. british police say darren osborn drove a van into a crowd of worshippers outside a london mosque on sunday killing one person and injuring several

others. neighbors say he's a father of four, aggressive an strange. he's held on terror charges. in the meantime, the london mayor joined muslim worshippers last night to show solidarity. the mayor said london would not allow the attack to divide communities praised response to the attack. look at photos just into the newsroom. you can see a group of firefighters there and right in the middle, british pop singer adele offering support following the high-rise apartment fire. at least 79 people were killed in that fire last. adele had a cup of tea with the firefighters and thanked them for their efforts. explosive allegations leveled against san francisco state university sued by a group of jewish students. there's a discrimination lawsuit accusing the school of knowingly fostering, quote, an anti-semitic environment. the back story here, follow it is campus appearance last year by the mayor of jerusalem, the protest earls disrupted an

ultimately that appearance was canceled. the lawsuit accuses the school an campus police of violating free speech allowing the protest to continue. leaders said they disagree with the allegations but they're still reviewing the complaint. ntsb, laura, opened up the files of that terrible crash of a tesla in florida last year killing the driver. >> scott mcgrew, investigators said he wasn't paying atngs. >> he let the tesla doñi the driving on auto-pilot. josh brown posted lots of videos of youtube of the auto pilot driving the car and fun to watch until we learned that he was killed when the tesla drove into the side of a truck in may of 2016. the ntsb ruled brown not paying attention, exonerating tesla. but investigators just opened the docket to the public. more than 500 pages. we can see what's inside, including new churs of the car

after the accident. and more importantly, the raw data from the tesla sensors. see the output, the warnings sent to the dash board at least seven times that tesla alerting the driver his hands were not on the steering wheel. but he ignored them. tesla since made several changes to its auto pilot system. switching from a camera over to radar and more importantly if you ignore the warnings to touch the steering wheel, the car will now turn the auto pilot off. dow 30 industrials and s&p 500 both closed at record highs on monday. the nasdaq did very well, reversing recent losses. apple had a day in a long time. now, the gains come investors are convinced that washington is going to push tax breaks through. speaker of the house paul ryan will reinforce that belief today promising the house is close to a tax but bucket of cold water here, only one-page proposals of the white house and little else.

this really hot weather for all the areas shaded in red and the pinks show where we have excessive heat warnings. that includes solano county and where you need to take it easy and head somewhere nice and cool and oakland nice and cool today reaching 62 degrees to start out in the morning. noontime temperature 71. so it will be really nice. highs reaching into the upper 70s today. and dropping back to 74 by 8:00. looking at some triple digit temperatures for the interior valleys. morgan hill up to 100 degrees today. palo alto, 90. half moon bay, 65. going to see fog rolling in along the coast. also keeping it cool in santa cruz starting out in the morning and the low 60s an we'll see it rise into the low 70s today with the nice little breeze. the 7-forecast shows that in san francisco, the fog rolls in today. especially during the afternoon. it retreats away from the coast tomorrow and our temperatures start to go up.

we will have a peak of the heat on thursday. reaching 84 degrees there. inland valleys up to 106. and then as temperatures come down this weekend, still not much relief but it will be lower than the 106 we'll see on thursday. and mike now has a warning for peninsula drivers. >> issued by chp. saying look at the sensors, nice easy drive and the peninsula, just a warning. may find some slowing northbound coming up. reported around broadway and now probably moving up past sfo if the vehicle is still on the roadway. one of the wider loads and i think pulling a trailer with maybe a portable building on the back and no escorting vehicle. talking about the wide load and kind of crossing over into the lane on either side so just be careful adjacent lanes. no problem on the speed sensors and waze. drive times not reflecting any problems but palo alto and towards san francisco.

welcome back. 6:24 on the tuesday morning. overdoses are the leading killer of americans under 50 and ground zero for the opioid crisis happens in ohio. nbc news grant r granted rare access in the battle of the epidemic. and nbc crew went on a raid with the task force there dedicated to stopping the trafficking of heroin and fentanyl. >> what went down here? >> did a cold call on a guy selling heroin. caught him in the act. >> heroin or fentanyl? >> we don't know. most likely fentanyl. >> this is the day-to-day stuff that, you know, people are going to the morgue for. >> investigators say that street level dealers are indirectly part of a global crime ring. china is primary source of fentanyl in the u.s. most is shipped to mexico and

then smuggled across the border by cartels. coming up, a look at the devastating effects of the crisis and where the country might go from here. all of that is part of a series "one nation overdosed." tiger woods is getting help to manage his medications in the way he deals with back pain and a sleep disorder. he made that announcement in a tweet yesterday coming less than a month after woods was arrested for driving under the influence in florida. he failed field sobriety tests and blue a 0.00 on a breathalyzer. woods denied taking illegal drugs and said the condition was an unexpected action to prescription medication. happening today, the names of jurors who failed to reach a verdict in the bill cosby sexual assault trial could be made public. a judge will hold a hearing today to decide whether to grant an immediate release of the names and prosecutors say it could make it more difficult to select an impartial jury.

nearly trapped in the parking lot with a tree limb. after high heat, high heat following a wet wenter is making the trees very thirsty and very heavy and would you believe that this kind of extreme heat brings down more branches than the heavy winter storms we saw? this tree in oakland fell blocking traffic and tossing a nest with a mama and baby birds inside. oakland police saved the day there. experts call it sudden summer limb drop. it brought down part of a limb. in this incident, a car was damaged there. certified arborist explained to me it's because of when it's really hot and the trees pull in more moisture than they can release through the leaves and those branches get heavy and then snap. this is another one that came down on the los cados creek trail. you are responsible for the ones

at your home or business. michael young of urban tree management says you can take down any branch you can reach from the ground but anything over 20 feet up you should really leave to an expert. >> if you can reach it from a ladder, then maybe it's okay to do. but as an arborist, we see all the statistics on accidents when people are doing tree work and 9 times out of 10 it's a homeowner that's fallen off a ladder. >> reporter: all right. so cross that one off the honey do list but looking up today look for dead trees, broken branchs to come down unexpectedly, signs of disease like mushrooms or cork and leaning of more than 10 degrees from the u.s. forest service and i'll post them on my facebook page and more video of the arborist to know what to look for as the heat wave drives you and your family into the shade. we'll make sure you do it

safely. in san, kris sanchez, today in the bay. >> thank you so much. you mentioned the honey do list, one of those is get the air conditioning fixed. people are scrambling to keep cool. your best bet, of course, air conditioning. we spoke to some repair shops saying the phones ringing off the hook. one repair shop told us people aren't asking how much but when can you get to the house and fix that ac unit. >> probably started last week. and when we started to get estimate calls and then started turning into, you know, people started buying right off the bat. >> last night up to about 92 inside the house and just thankful to be back up and cooling off. >> all right. so yes, all is great if that unit is working. if you don't have air conditioning at home, head to a mall, movie theater, one of the many cooling centers set up to help you out. there are 5,000 power outages in union city. we are continuing to track this as there were 100,000 plus outages of last friday.

keep track of the heat downloading the nbc bay area app, free and monitor the temperatures across the bay including in your neighborhood. it is 6:34. we have some chilling new details on the challenges firefighters faced the of the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire. the city of oakland issued a new 50-page report on last year's fire that killed 36 people. among the revelations, arriving firefighters had no idea that the building was even packed with people attending a concert. seven victims were found on the second floor, 29 on the ground floor. some underneath the collapsed roof. the cause may never be determined because the area where the fire started was destroyed. that is not stopping victims' families from taking legal action. >> they're suing the owner, the master tenant as well as the producers and performers that evening, and the others that had worked on the electrical equipment. >> the report does list several

possible causes for the fire including faulty wiring, a cigarette or a candle. master tenant and another tenant are each facing three dozen involuntary manslaughter charges. story now that's just simply heart breaking. santa rosa police trying to figure out what caused a man to do the unthinkable on father's day. take the life of his two young children and then take his own life. neighbors identified that father's 40-year-old and his estranged wife dropped the children off at the house as part of a court-ordered visit. they were in the midst of a custody battle and neighbors said they would hear the two fighting. >> we just noticed he was a little anxious the past couple of days. and the police had been here a lot off and on and like he was always really good with the kids, though. he was a nice person. >> well, the bodies of all three were found inside the apartment on monday. after his estranged wife called

deputies to get a check on the children. investigators say that he hanged himself. they are not saying how the children died. >> so sad. 6:36 this morning. another person arrested in berkeley allegedly trying to give a child a substance to drink. a week after a woman was arrested for givering a child methamphetamine at a park. a mother noticed a man trying to give her son what he claimed was water and honey. police arrested the 36-year-old william turner. he is being evaluated at a psychiatric hospital. happening today, opponents of a planned jail expansion to gather ahead of a supervisor's meeting. contra costa supervisors green lighting expanding the detex center in monday and also approved a $70 million state grant to fund the project and protesting the board holding a final vote today on the funding. all right. we know it's going to be hot. how hot?

monday. >> if we can get cooling or a neighbor with a pool -- >> okay. a little bit. how about a little bit? still going to hit the triple digits for the valleys today and saturday's forecast, 96. that's really not that much better but it's still going to be hot. and you can head to the coast to cool off. maybe off this weekend and you can find somewhere cool. it just takes a drive. we will have the temperatures that will be very nice, up to 69 degrees along the coast. the bay, 8 degrees. and then inland valleys 89 degrees with a lot more sunshine. we have the pride festival happening this weekend in san francisco. and we are going to have some beautiful weather for that. a lot of sunshine. highs into the upper 60s with a nice little breeze. to hit the road heading to the sierra, a live look out there this morning. looking at squaw valley and the temperatures for the weekend will be in the low 80s. you better get there quick. a lot of that snow continues to melt, especially with

that neighborhood. right now, breaking news and we are just getting word of brand new power outages in the east bay. looking at the pg&e map and we found out there's more than 5,000 customers without power in con considered and 5,600 customers lost electricity in union city happening 6:00 this morning and tracking the outages as the heat continues to rise. not only here in the bay area but elsewhere, temperatures said to be so hot in arizona, for example, american airlines is canceling close to 40 flights today. in and out of phoenix. when it is that hot, air density changes making it harder for planes to take off. about 120 degrees there. >> harder to take off there. easier to cook here. when the car's as hot as a och, why not bake something in? national weather service team in sacramento, bacon there on right side of your screen. bis kits on the other side of

falafel. they're pulling the items out of caution. high school students in california will have a backup option for college. thanks to a deal that's new state budget all applicants who qualify for cal state admission will be accepted to at least one school. mercury news reports right now some 30,000 qualified students are turned away because the school or schools they apply to are full. the system has until next hay for a redirection policy for students not accepted to the top choice. live now to the nation's capitol and republicans continuing to work fast and furiously to put together a health care bill, all of that behind closed doors. this after democrats took to the senate floor overnight to blast republicans for holding those meetings out of public view to try to repeal the affordable care view. democrats expressed the fear gnat republican leaders jam in their words a new health care bill through the senate by tend of next week with little debate. meantime, a majority of

californians feeling uneasy about the new republican health care plan. a poll by uc berkeley's institute of governmental studies shows 56% of californians say they worry that they or someone in the family might lose health insurance coverage if obamacare goes away. nearly 40% said that they're very worried. 65% of californians support obamacare. there may be changes at the white house this week. >> scott mcgrew, sean spicer could be leaving the press room podium. >> he might. it's possible to be promoted out of the job, moved up to white house communications director. and then somebody else will take his job taking ques. now, the white house has not conducted an on-camera briefing since june 12th. but it will have one today. 11:30 our time. that's brand new into our newsroom. president trump threatened to end press briefings entirely in a tweet a couple of months ago.

rosy gray from the atlantic said she asked steve bannon why the on-camera briefings are so rare and bannon told her because sean got fatter. apparently sean spicer and then would not answer further questions. well, today the special election in georgia. a rookie politician representing the democrats hopes to win in a district that's been strongly republican. republican, in fact, held that seat since 1978. this is a look at the polls. they opened this morning in atlanta. more than 133,000 votes have been cast through mail-in ballots and early voting. the race pits karen handel, the republican, against jon ossoff, a documentary filmmaker. the seat was opened up when tom price went to washington to be the secretary of health and human services and this race is seen as a hint of what's to come in the midterms. the president has weighed in tweeting, democrat jon ossoff,

who wants to raise your taxes to the highest level and is weak on crime and security, doesn't even live in district. now, the president's right about that. he lives near but not in the district he wants to represent. he grew up there. his parents live there. he says he's going to move there. he lives with his girlfriend nearby. also a special election in south carolina today, a blowout and gotten little attention. we continue to watch the situation in syria. american planes, of course, shooting down a syrian fighter plane. russia turned off the deconfliction system, basically hung up the phone that connects u.s. and russian forces to make sure they don't accidentally attack each other. on monday the u.s. chairman of the joint chiefs said they were in some communication. president trump is critical of america's involvement in syria before he was president saying we should forget it, forget syria. no upside in his words. tremendous down. many presidents both republican and democrat discover that conflicts overseas have a way of

advisory continues for the inland areas shaded in red now. this is where the temperatures will be dangerously hot and where it's pink that's where we have excessive heat warnings. that includes solono county and central valley. look at the high temperatures today. triple digits for parts of the south bay and south county. 104 today in antioch. east bay and. degrees in belmont this afternoon. san francisco, some upper 60s for outer sunset. low 70s for the mission district. 103 again today in novato and napa up to 98 degrees. getting ready for the day, another day where you have to wear something light colored and lightweight, breathable to help keep you cool in the hot weather and we will have to continue to keep that trend over the next few days. make sure you stay hydrated, drink water even if you don't feel tlisty and a cool towel own the neck, lots of breaks and especially working outside and

welcome back on your tuesday morning before heading out the door, top stories right now. >> everybody's talking about the heat. it is our top story of the morning. everyone in the bay area is being asked to limit their power use. cal iso issued a flex alert meaning they're concerned of an overloaded power grid. when things get hotter later today. everyone is asked to keep the electric use to a minimum of 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. within the last hour, nearly 12,000 customers have lost power in the east bay with the hardest hit in concord. >> and the heat wave bringing a different worry. falling trees. branches fell on the cars yesterday in willow glen neighborhood. here's an example. nobody was hurt. some trees tend to take on as much water as possible when it's hot and that way they make their branches heavy and vulnerable to
