the interior valleys of marin counties. all of the areas shaded in orange. a heat advisory in effect for today. and our temperatures will be very extreme in the tri-valley. 90 degrees and 97 for the south bay. the fog quickly rolls away from the coastline. we'll talk more about the heat coming up. >> the basics of it earlier. a smooth flow of traffic over most of the bay, the east bay, like hayward showing you slowing. reports of a crash on the southbound side may be affecting speeds. not a lot of detail.

the last half hour that stretch of the east bay and we look to the south bay where we see the build just gradual build here are at 680. back to you. area expected to hit triple digits, there is a flex alert, the peak of the heat wave is tomorrow. many folks are being urged to conserve their energy between 2:00 and 9:00 p.m. the goal is to save more than 500 mega watts of energy. that's about what it takes to fire 500,000 homes. if you have air conditioning you are asked to set your thermostat at 78 degrees, turn off lights, and avoid using large appliances during that flex alert. a developing story, more trouble for san francisco-based uber. the embattled ceo is resigning.

>> pete suratos joining us live outside of uber headquarters this morning with the reason, pete, why travis kalanick is stepping down and what it means for the ride sharing giant. >> reporter: good morning to you, sam and laura. as you mentioned it have is kalanick stepping down as ceo as it deals with its fair share of controversy. he did step down tuesday night, and this was just after a week of taking a leave of absence to deal with the death of his mother who was killed in a boating accident but came at a time the popular ride sharing company was under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. take, for instance, this video when kalanick argued with an uber driver unhappy about fare changes, telling him to take personal responsibility for his financial situation. and then allegations of sexual harassment, bullying and retaliation in the work place and management turnover as the company tries to work its way out of a series of missteps. in a statement from kalanick he

says, quote, i love uber more than anything in the world and at this difficult moment in my personal life i have accepted the request to step aside so that uber can go back to building rather than being distracted with another fight. now in a statement from board of directors, travis has always put uber first this is a sign of his devotion and love for uber. he's taking the time to heal from his personal tragedy while giving the company room to fully embrace a new chapter in uber's history. we look forward to continuing to serve with him on the board. and as it says in a statement, kalanick will remain as a board member as the company searches for a new ceo. we're live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." thank you, pete. >> our scott mcgrew has been tracking all the fallout and recent rovers surrounding uber, a closer look for what is next coming up in just ten minutes. 6:03. a vehicle hits and kills a

bicyclist in san jose and now investigators looking into how this happened. a man riding his bike right near the library struck about 10:30 last night. that man died at the scene. the driver is cooperating with police. a chase in the south bay ends in a crash on a busy street. we first broke this story when we came on air at 4:30 this morning. >> it happened overnight. it ended at the interchange near the happy hollow zoo. kris sanchez is live with what happened and what is left behind. >> reporter: we're getting a better look now that the sun is up. on to the sidewalk here at roberts you can see where a light pole was sheared right off its base. the signal is on the ground. the pole is about 20 feet away. the spot where the car ended up is 50 feet away in a parking

lot. we were able to confirm that the santa clara sheriff's deputies did take three people into custody but only after those three folks were treated by medical personnel here on the scene. the sheriff's department tells us they were in pursuit of a driver on story road but they haven't said yet where the chase started nor why the chase started. our crew got here just around 2:00 this morning. this is story road at roberts near happy hollow park and zoo, about a football field away. it's also a park lot of what is usually a busy walmart super store. fortunately the walmart store and the sidewalk in front of it not busy at 2:00 in the morning. we are still trying to work with the santa clara county sheriff's department to find out why the pursuit started in the first place. as soon as we find out that, we'll let you know. >> still digging for more

information. kris, thank you very much. 6:05. san jose leaders yesterday do approve the start of the process of building google's mega complex in san jose. here is what happened officially. the city council gave the city the okay to start negotiations with google for about 250 acres of downtown property. google wants to acquire the parcels and build a it tech and transit vision near the station that would include up to 8 million square feet of office space. the mayor says the city will not offer any subsidies to the tech giant. >> any sale of land would be a full, fair market value. the taxpayer will not be shorted a single cent. and, secondly, no subsidy of any kind from the city. >> but that does not assuage all concerns here. some community groups are still worried about a potential surge in rent that could squeeze out low-income workers. those for the project say it is expected to create some 20,000 new jobs. at 6:06 live to washington,

d.c., where the call to see the health care bill is growing louder. republican leaders have agreed to release a draft of their plan this week. republican senators have been getting hammered at angry town halls over health care and democrats have been complaining the bill is being crafted in secret, even some of the 13 republicans who are supposed to be writing the bill say they haven't seen any details. republicans want to vote before the fourth of july break, and they can only ait forward to lose two votes. also the bill must get a score before the senate can vote. >> back in the bay area a follow-up now as contra costa county supervisors have reportedly finalized a deal to he can panned the detention facility, approving a $95 million spending plan that includes $25 million out of the county's general fund. state grant money will cover the rest of the tab. east bay times reports supervisors heard a long line of

opponents before they did decide to approve the plan. some tough new rules to limit greenhouse gases from bay area refineries could be approved today. the bay area air quality management district is voting on those rules later this morning in san francisco. the rules would cap emissions from chevron, valero, phillips and shell located in contra k s costa county. last-minute changes to the rules have made them weaker. san francisco's conservatory of flowers kicks off a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the summer of love. tonight the conservatory will unveil a light art installation. you can check out the artwork every night through october 21. there will also be a summer solstice concert tonight in golden gate park. and the following streets already closed in preparation for this event. parts of jfk drive and the entrance to golden gate at fulton. now back to our weather alert with meteorologist kari hall. another hot one. s it is going to be a hot

one. as we approach 6:09 look it at the sun rise from the castro. you can see the tower shrouded in low clouds. the temperature at 55 degrees and those clouds will get out of here quickly. we can already see the clear skies. the temperature a nice cool 59. look at where we're heading for this afternoon, going to see another day of triple digit temperatures in napa, concord, livermore and morgan hills. san jose up to 94. also mid-90s for palo alto and san francisco today, a high of 79 degrees we'll take a look at the temperature trend for fremont coming up in about four minutes. mike has more slowing out of danville. >> i do have slowing and i'm seeing a little build over the castro valley way. i'll double-check to make sure nothing is going on. it looks like an unusual the pattern there. southbound 680, a smooth slow of traffic until you get to sycamore valley road. more slowing continues as that crash still reported there on southbound side heading into san

it is 6:13. the extreme heat continues in the bay area. as we take a live look outside at fremont you're getting ready to head out the door and it starts out nice and cool, no air conditioning needed, but you'll be cranking it up again today. look at the temperature trend as you make plans on this very summer day. reaching into the low 90s in fremont. we could see some more triple digits for the inland valleys. i'll have a look at that forecast coming up in five. >> and i have yellow and orange also.

a disabled vehicle. trying to find out more and show you what's going on coming up. >> thank you very much, kari and mike. this morning we are getting a look at new dash cam video of the fernando castile shooting. it happened during a traffic stop. >> don't pull it out. [ sound of gunshots ] >> he was shot after he told police he was carrying a gun and had a permit. you heard that clip the officer asked him not to reach for his weapon. the officer was acquitted on all charges just last week. he says he opened fire because he believed castile was reaching for his gun. his girlfriend broadcast the aftermath live on facebook. the police department parted ways with the officer after the incident. his family plans to file a civil suit against the officer.

it is 6:14 now on your wednesday. demanding action, community members calling for stronger it tenant protections and it comes after families who live with federally subsidized hud housing complex were given notice the owners will not be renewing their contract. a packed city council meeting. so far there's no word on what city leaders plan to do. 6:15. amazon has launched a try before you buy service called promise wardrobe allowing prime members to try on clothes, shoes, and acce accessories. it's similar to stitch fix and trunk club. customers are charged for items they keep and will get higher discounts if they buy a lot of eitems. as we reported to you at the top of the hour the ceo of uber has resigned.

>> travis kalanick initially said he was taking a leave of absence following a report criticizing the company and his leadership. now he's out. the question, scott mcgrew, who is taking over. >> reporter: a fine question. i think a lot of tech reporters have gone through our mental list of available ceos. my vote, and i don't have one, would be the former ford ceo mark fields because he knows transportation. kalanick was bad for uber's image is nothing new. this maging zen cover is from two and a half years ago, uber bad. whoever uber picks as its new leader travis will have a say. out as ceo, but it remains on the board of directors. presumably he's still taking that leave of absence, the one recommended in the holder report. we're trying to clear that up, what his status is. uber has promised 180 days of fixes. 180 days of making it right starting with tipping. this is what your uber app will look like on the tipping screen uber promises new announcements

every week. glass door released its list of ceos in the nation. uber is not on it but lots of bay area companies are including clorox in the east bay. glass door says clorox ceo is the best boss in all of the united states. shares of chipotle fell another 7% tuesday. the company said it did not expect business to improve in the short term. the dow fell 61 points off record highs. the nasdaq down 0.8%. google this morning releasing a new jobs search engine. jobs near me. you can search by skill and commute time. 46% of employers say they have a hard time finding workers to build jobs. it is national selfie day. >> did you bring your camera? >> i did not. >> we can do it right now.

they are less afraid of frogs than they are of us. i suppose that's a good thing. >> i guess. >> that's always my biggest fear going hiking, though, in the hills. >> oh, yeah. >> it if you encounter one of those things, they tell you to make loud noises and make yourself appear larger. >> have a bodyguard handy. >> or bring a gun, i don't know. we'll see. it's not a good day to go hiking in the hills because we do have some very hot weather. we are talking about triple digits again today. now as we look now at the fog covering the golden gate bridge, this has kept san francisco nice and cool, and we will have another one of those days where the fog quickly rolls away. here is the view from berkeley. it's 58 degrees there, and we will have a very nice afternoon there and in morgan hill we're still seeing the low clouds right now but that will be clearing out quickly. looking at today what we're forecasting the record high temperatures. it does not look like we'll set

any new records even though it will be ex team extremely hot. the record is 104 degrees. looking at livermore, very close. we should not break the long-standing record that was set in 1981. now looking at our high temperatures today, reaching into the triple digits for the south county, the east bay we'll see some widespread temperature readings over 100 degrees. half moon bay will be at 67. we'll have 94 in palo alto. san francisco 80 in the mission district. and 90s in mill valley. the heat warning, the excessive heat warning, has been expanded to include more of contra costa and alameda counties. also an area of marin county for the interior valley. so all of these areas shaded in orange. a picture yesterday of the fog and cooler temperatures in pacifica. you can send me your pictures, too, of what it looks like where you are and some of those

thermometer readings, too. we are going to see the high temperatures in san francisco reaching into the low 80s by tomorrow and then cooling off in time for the weekend. the valleys still have a lot more heat to go but it does peak tomorrow and starts to come back down. as we over to mike tracking what's happening as drivers head out on the roadways. >> we're talking about that as well, coastal rise. pretty much all your drives are moving well right now, slowing off westbound 92 would be the s san mateo bridge. you can see something going on northbound at 238. the scattered reports coming in, nothing dramatic but, still, given the lighter flow of traffic that's one to watch. watching the bay bridge but the metering lights there. i want to show you the waze system. if you're going from san jose

the bus! >> somebody get that bus. >> there's nobody in there. be[ bleep ] >> pretty wild new video in this morning showing an out-of-control bus slamming into cars in new york city. police sayed up hitting ten cars and beside a church. it happened after midnight in brooklyn. one man changing a tire had to leap out of the way. he was slightly injured in doing

so may have saved his own life. it is under investigation. nbc bay area responds, a san ramone man couldn't get his home warranty company to pay a claim. >> he turned to our consumer team with this $2,300 problem. chris chmura is here with the story. >> reporter: when mike bates noticed his water heater was leaking, he called his home warranty company. the company approved the repair work over the phone saying mike just needed to send in the invoice for reimbursement, and that's what he did. the invoice was for $2,300 because the tech said the leaky water heater was beyond repair and needed to be replaced. but american home shield denied the claim saying that mike didn't receive prior approval. the company said the tech was supposed to call them and explain the problem before starting work. mike says that wasn't what he was told, so he reached out to us for help.

san fr san francisco will have some temperatures much more comfortable but still very warm. 82 degrees tomorrow. as we look ahead to the next several days our temperatures coming down for the rest of the weekend into early next week and then look at the valleys up to 107 degrees tomorrow. and then we do see the temperatures dropping but still will be really hot into the weekend, feeling nicer by tuesday of next week. coming up in seven minutes i'll have a look at some events going on around the bay area this weekend, heading over to mike now tracking that crash in danville. >> that's right, kari. we're showing slowdowns for 680. the rest of the bay does have a little slowing, just starting in the northbound routes and west 92 across the san mateo he bridge. light and typical on a summer day. southbound 680 all the way to sycamore valley road where that crash is at the point things start to let up heading down into san ramone. keep that in mind off the walnut creek interchange. as you get to the bay bridge,

smoother flow of traffic. over 20 minutes hovering around that mark down through berkeley. the volume of traffic. now there are a lot of cars traveling underneath the university avenue overcrossing. things are jamming up. no incidents between the racetrack and the over crossing. back to you. back to our micro climate alert. the idea is to conserve as much electricity as possible. >> bob redell live in one of the hottest spots in the bay area. he has some steps and tips how to prevent power outages, what we can do to help. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and sam. the california independent system operator which oversees the operations of the bulk of our state's electrical grid has issued a flex alert. it is a voluntary call for people to conserve electricity during the day especially for

those who live in dublin where it's supposed to be getting extremely hot again. as the temperatures soar, so does demand for power. take a look at your tv screen, the iso is estimating today's peak demand over 46,000 mega watts. you compare that to the record set in july of 2006 of just over 50,000 mega watts. to conserve elected trricity th is asking you limit your power usage between 2:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., the time of the day it will be the hottest. asking you to use your major appliances before or after those times so things like laundry, and set your air conditioning to no higher than 78 degrees and turn off any unnecessary lights. reporting live here in dublin, bob redell. appreciate that, bob. it is a good time if you have not already to download our free nbc bay area app that will enable you to get push alerts to get the latest weather alerts right to your phone. we are following breaking

news out of england. prince philip, the duke of edinburgh, is in the hospital. he had an infection from a pre-existing condition. they say the prince is in good spirits. queen elizabeth is scheduled to address parliament today, and that visit is still on the schedule. new details on a tragic story out of the north bay. a man who killed his two young children and then himself on father's day. we still do not know the children's cause of death. the san it at that rsanta rosa examiners will perform the autopsies. his sister tells he was depressed over a custody battle and camara had asked her to write a reference letter to the judge. >> custody issues, arguments, just everything all at once. he felt the whole world was coming down on him. >> the children's mother has since released an open letter to

the people of santa rosa and it says in part, quote, i sought help on numerous occasions and said many, many times my children were in danger in their father's care, and i did not receive the urgent help i needed to save them. police say the parents called authorities five times since april over custody issues, but that camara had never actually broken the law. >> it's heartbreaking. 6:35 right now. some frightening moments near uc-berkeley. the search it continues this morning for suspects connected to an early morning shooting. campus police say the woman and two men were parked at grizzly peak. three men walked up, demanded money. the woman was hit in the leg. none of the victims are affiliated with the cal campus. the woman will be okay. good news right now for south bay drivers, major improvements heading to a huge stretch of bascom avenue and in

campbell. the vta and officials from both cities have started to look at how to improve dangerous spots on the road. the bascom corridor study will be focusing on north bascom from interstate 880 all the way down to south bascom at highway 85. that's a six-mile stretch of road there. that project is not expected to begin until later next year. >> that section is critical for a lot of commuters. people will tell you how this they foal about the road. looking here, a smooth drive throughout the south bay. a nice, easy drive there, and to the castro valley area and in to the san mateo bridge. the problem here, we see the speed sensors, northbound 238, just about where we had the report of a disabled vehicle that may have cleared -- you seep the yellow develop as more cars are head iing past that scene. we still have this jammed south down to danville. that crash still looks like it's affecting lanes of traffic. that's the heavy slowing coming

off the walnut creek interchange. the rest of your commute looking really good. i want to show you mass transit. no problems here. you want to think about that if you're heading to pride, over in san francisco this weekend. they'll have additional service for a lot of these areas as well and we'll get a live look at the san rafael area. the 101. look at that sunshine. it's already hot. at least the traffic is flowing nicely. >> always focus on the positive. >> it does already look hot, by the way. that's a good observation there. no story this weekend but we do have gay pride as mike mentioned. >> a lot going on around the bay area, of course, as always, we have a look at that and also the weekend forecast. we are going to see those high temperatures along the coast much more comfortable at 72 degrees. it will still be very warm. in fact, hot. 96 degrees. but compared to the triple digits our temperatures will be coming down. looking at sunday's forecast for

the coast it will be 69. 89 degrees for the inland valleys, and we talk about the pride festival happening this weekend. it is going to be amazing. look at these temperatures. a lot of sun and low 70s. we'll keep that comfortable weather throughout the day. now it will be hot still this weekend in sonoma at the raceway as our temperature will be in the mid-60s. you'll enjoy some comfortable weather until about noon. that's when it starts to heat up and we'll be in the mid-80s throughout the day. if you are planning to head further north the russian river valley in the mid-80s on saturday and 80 degrees on sunday which is a huge improvement over what we'll feel today. looking at yosemite's forecast, if you will be hitting the road, a chance of thunderstorms on friday but it does clear out for the weekend with our temperatures reaching into the upper 70s. i'll bring it back home and have a look at fremont's temperature trend coming up in three minutes, laura. thank you, kari.

it is 6:42 on this first full day of summer as we take a live look outside at fremont, another hot day. many more people get out there on the roadways at 10:00. we'll be in the mid-70s. you need to keep refilling the water bottle as the temperatures heat up. drink lots of fluids and stay hydrated today. as we reach up to 93 degrees by 4:00. i'll have a look at the peak of the heat and the slow deof our temperatures heading to early next week coming up in five minutes. >> and we're looking at the slow increase. we do have a problem at castro valley showing the effects of an earlier disabled vehicle. 6:42 on your wednesday.

a live look at uber's headquarters in san francisco where the future of the company is suddenly up in the air. this after the sudden and unexpected resignation of founder and ceo travis kalanick. uber has been under fire for a while. kalanick has been dealing with the death of his mother. right now there is no clear successor. kalanick is going to remain on the board there but release d this statement late last night saying, quote, i love uber more than anything in the world and i have accepted the investors' request to step aside so uber can go back to building rather than be distracted with another fight. from the u.s. department of transportation, the d.o.t., showing the noisiest places to live in all of california. we have chosen to focus on the bay area and how things are looking.

>> as much as 15 inches with tides as high as 3 feet. >> the north bay motel. early saturday morning officers responded to reports of a fight involving up to 15 people at the gold coin motel. police yelled obscenities. a hostile crowd then gathered. officers arrested the two men. one is now facing a felony obstruction charge. so some folks in palo alto should be getting ready for water increases. a 4% increase going into effect on july 1st. the city council voted to raise rates by 6%. that city over $3 to monthly

bills. not too impactful. as soon as tomorrow house law make ers will be voting on a bill to streamline the process for new water storage project in california. that could help pave the way for new reservoir inspection. permits take years if not decades to build. 6:46. developing now brussels central station is open after a man blew himself up with explosives last night. the suicide bomber was shot by soldiers after detonating a small device. the man identified as a moroccan national later died. no one else was hurt. the belgian interior minister says security was expected to remain high today at brussels rail facilities. uva students in charlottes

mourning the loss of a fellow student. hundreds of students coming out for a candlelight vigil last night. in the meantime the question is how is the u.s. going to respond to north korea following warmbier's death. he died after he was returned from north korea. he was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor for allegedly stealing a propaganda poster. president trump appeared to blame former president barack obama for what happened. >> frankly, if he were brought home sooner, the result would have been a lot different. he should have been brought home that same day. the result would have been a lot different. >> officials right now are looking at adding more sanction s on north korea and possibly banning americans from traveling there. >> the u.s. no longer relying on china to help tensions in the area. let's start with that tweet.

this can be interpreted as quite foreboding. while i greatly appreciate the efforts of president xi and china to help with north korea it has not worked out. china tried so we can infer a couple things out of this. the u.s. is not going to rely on china as a mediator and as a go between. the u.s. will take his own action from here on out. that is a mystery, of course, and implications as well. remember, the are president has been trying to foster good relations so that president xi would help him solve the north korea problem. president trump even went back on a huge campaign promise to label china currency manipulator and then later said why would i do that? why would i call them a currency man ipulator if they're helping us? he now feels china is not helping us. the white house, the state

department approaching it differently. the secretary of state is meeting with chinese officials about north korea. other news coming out of the senate this morning, senators will get to see a draft of the health care bill. there were complaints it was drafted in secret. even some of the 13 members who were suppose d to be writing it say they haven't seen it. >> though i've been a member of this working group amongst senate republic assigned to help narrow the focus of this, i haven't seen the bill. >> reporter: the georgia special election is over. the republican candidate won the seat in a close race. a defeat for democrats who had hoped the anger against president trump would help them convert a very republican district. yesterday i mentioned there was a special election in south carolina as well. i dismissed it because the republican was sure to win, i said. the republican did win but it was a squeaker.
