creek knocking out power to thousands of people in that area. and to head off that kind of problem, pg&e has also sent out venltation inspectors in neighborhoods looking for vulnerable tree branches to take things down before they fall. >> i can tell you personally they were just in my backyard last week. now, pg&e is using the smart meeters that have been installed around the bay area to identify those outages faster than relying on customers calling in. sometimes the power goes out we're not home so they might not know about it if not for the smart meter. they are also using out jaj prediction models to pin point where the heat could trigger those out jajs before they happen so that crews could get in place. it is all hands on deck here. there are crews spagsed all around the bay area waiting for when that pourp goes out because it's not an if, it is a when when have you this kind of pressure on the power grid. now all week any have been twharng today is the day where we expect to he see the greatest number of outages, so make sure

the trarns transmission lines here in the state of california to make surety lights stay on. we've got steven greenly, you equated this to being kind of like an air traffic controller. >> yes, it is. we are a nonprofit organization so we don't own northwest transz transmission or the generation operation, that's owned by the her choonts or the utilities. but what we do like air traffic controllers, tell airplanes when to take off and when 20 land, what runway. we do the same with electrons. we say to the generators how much they're going to generate, what transmission path they're going to be using and how much and for how long. >> tuesday, wednesday, flex alerts. >> yeah. >> today is the hottest day in the bay area and it looks like folsom as well but no flechl flex alert today. >> that's right. it's kind of a fik he will thing in trying to figure out how much demand there's going to be and how much actually shows up and then how much generation we're going to need. and so we still try to be judicious with flex alerts. we are asking 30 million
6:34 am
californians to change their daily habits. so we just don't take that lightly. and so whenever we looked at today, at yesterday, we thought, well, we're doing okay. we didn't need it for today, even though, yes, we knew it was still going to be quite hot, especially in the bay area. >> and you're forecasting the demand today would be about a thousand mega watts less than yesterday. i'm looking at the men and women down on the floor what was it like yesterday and the day before during a flex alert when you're trying to make sure that the demand is met? >> that's right. electrons are something that we taken a hundred years to try to control. what our operators are zog they're doing things like power flows. so, you know, if something happens on a transmission line, all of the sudden the flow of power across 26,000 miles of transmission changes. so they're saying, okay, there's been a change, what i do do now. our generator suddenly maybe it has gone offline for whatever reason, it broke, all of a sudden the power flows have
6:35 am
changed again. so they try to fix that. >> reporter: thank you very much. steven greenly here at cal iso. again, right now there's no prediction that there could be a flex alert but steven was mentioning earlier to me off camera we'll see what happens at 11:00. right now no flex alerts scheduled for the state of california after we had the two yesterday and the day before. reporting live here in folsom, bob riddell today in the bay. just a fascinating look at how this all woekz works. thank you very much. 6:35. today's extreme heat is going to stop opening day at thorough bred horse racing in alameda's county fair. racing instead is going to begin tomorrow when the temperatures cool off just a little bit. if you plan on wagering on the ponies, you should check the fair schedule because there are some days between now and july 9th when the track stays dark. track the heat right to your neighborhood by downloading our free nbc bay area app. san francisco's police whooef chief wants ton arm
