ticketing prices and how this will impact drivers. and finally cooling down. relief is on the way after triple digit heat in the bay area. good morning - and thanks for joining u can you feel it's friday in the air around here? thanks for joining us . i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i feel sympathy for the pg&e workers and the construction workers and everybody. >> yeah, that, too. >> it's coming down now. >> it's still going to be warm for the inland valleys but you'll feel the difference, and it won't be as uncomfortable as we've had to deal with and as dangerous. we are starting out this morning in the low to mid-60s, so it already feels warm as you get ready to head out although we do have patchy fog in the north bay. it's 55 degrees there and also in san francisco. the heat advisory in effect for all of these areas shaded in red where we will see the highs as high as 97 degrees, a closer look. we can see that the heat advisory continues for solano county and for the tear yor

portions of contra costa and alameda as we go through the day. let's check out the high temperatures up to 97 in the tri-valley, 80 in the east bay and san francisco 71. a closer look at this coming up in about six minutes. mike is checking in again on highway 17. >> kari, it's still closed southbound. both lanes are blocked by two disabled big rigs. the first one stuck there. the second one had trouble getting by and now no one gets through. this is shy of summit road. chp told us the tow truck should be arriving and they hope to move those soon. that was a half hour ago. we're calling them and they're very busy now. looking to the rest of the bay, not so much of a problem. these are the speed sensors we expect to see. the golden gate bridge, fog has returned. cooler now. looking northbound, a few cars head iing to the robin williams tunnel, shy of the rainbow arc. there may a crash blocking part of one lane.

be careful. i don't think there's fog at that particular point. >> you mentioned the rainbow arc. this is a big weekend. it's pride weekend and it kicks off with the annual trans march. millions of people expected to head for pride festivities over the weekend all leading up to the big parade. >> bob redell live with the tight security that you can expect to see if you're head in to the parade. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and sam. 24 hours from now in downtown that will be packed with people for this weekend's pride event. you can see the main stage is being erected right now in front of city hall in preparation for the two-day event starting tomorrow going on through sunday. you might recall that security was increased significantly last year right after the murder of 49 people at the pulse nightclub. a gay nightclub in orlando where those people were shot and killed. that security has not changed.

the same measures in place this year for san francisco pride, san francisco police will increase the number of its officers at the event both in uniform and plain clothes. everyone attend will go have to go threw a metal detector or be wanded before entering the event. your bag can be no bigger than 18x18 inches. if you do have a larger bag keep in mind there's not going to be any storage lockers on site. you're not allowed to bring in outside alcohol and while on property organizers are reminding you not to take drinks from strangers. pride runs from noon to 6:00 tomorrow, 11:00 to 6:00 sunday with the parade at 10:30. you are encouraged to take public transportation. sunday b.a.r.t. will be opening 8:00 running saturday light service. that being said expect b.a.r.t. to be crowded. you can see where the peak

travel times will be, clearly going to be around the start of the parade and the end of the parade. if you want to try to travel inside or outside those times that might be your best bet as far as avoiding the crowds. muni and cal train increasing sunday service. again, expecting thousands upon thousands of people here for the pride celebrations in downtown san francisco. reporting live here from outside city hall, bob redell, "today in the bay." thank you bob. 6:04. happening today volunteers will be setting up the outline of the giants pink triangle on twin peaks. it is a symbol of defiance, courage, and vent strength. in nazi germany gays and lesbians were forced to wear it as a sign of shame. this deadly overnight crash in san jose. take a look at the wreckage left behind. police say two vehicles collided at the intersection of monterey highway and bailey road. one driver was pronounced dead at the scene. the other taken to the hospital

and treated. it appears a third vehicle may have been involved. this is san jose's 24th fatal crash of 2017. a heads-up for b.a.r.t. riders. it could soon cost you more to ride. b.a.r.t. is making changes to its fare system. stop people from riding without pay i paying for a ticket. kris sanchez joins us live from fremont this morning with the m impact this could certainly have on your wallet. good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning, laura. b.a.r.t. ride may not be feeling all warm and fuzzy about the changes coming down the pike but using a paper ticket is not the only way you're going to pay more. there are other ways as well and this was a vote that passed by the b.a.r.t. board. leadership had to come up with a budget to close the deficit of $31 million that you mentioned. also dealing at the same time with 3% fewer riders paying into the kiddie. the good news while you'll be paying 2.7% more ba.a.r.t.

promises your ride about get better as two-thirds of the capital budget will be spent on the system itself -- new cars, improving stations, making the system more reliable and clean. now the bad news is that it will cost you. starting in january riders will pay 2.7% fare increase and a 50 cent charge to use a paper ticket instead of a clipper card. if you don't want to pay that get the clipper card. the youth discount is cut to 50% which is less than it is now, but the youth discount is act l actually extended so folks can use it until they're 18 years old instead of when they're 12 which is the case right now. kids under 5 still ride b.a.r.t. for free. b.a.r.t. also committed to cracking down on fare evaders to the tune of $2.7 million. they're doing some physical changes, raising the barriers, making it harder for those cheaters to get in. and then they're hiring more people to make sure if they do evade those fares and jump in they get busted. kris sanchez, "today in the

bay." b.a.r.t. is trying to change its image by adopting a safe transit policy. passengers in stations and on trains will not be asked to prove their citizenship. a watered down version of an earlier plan that would have declared b.a.r.t. as a sanctuary transit. it's to win favor with the public especially as b.a.r.t. is announcing the fare increases kris just outlined for next year. homeowners right now are surveying the damage after this. firefighters monitoring hot spots overnight from brush fire in vallejo right by the highway. it was one of several spot fires across the bay area yesterday. that fire started when a car fire spread to a nearby hillside alongside interstate 80. all of this happening before 1:00 in the afternoon. it eventually burned about 40 acres. it caused slight damage to four homes. vallejo firefighters say the nearby fire station 26, which has been shuttered since 2010 would have come in it handy if it were staffed. >> we came from columbus and 80

basically. >> having 26 closed real areally hurt you. >> took about eight minutes of a response. the fire probably got from the freeway up here in about eight minutes. >> all that damage in just a matter of minutes. some of those homes now have broken windows. one of them has a damaged roof. all new this morning for the first time north korea is responding to the death of otto warmbier. he was sent home in a coma. north korea is denying that anyone tortured him or treated him cruelly. they say he was released last week, quote, for humanitarian reasons. north korea says warmbier contracted botulism and fell into a coma after taking a sleeping pill. for the first time ever incoming freshmen at stanford will will be able to bring pets to school. pets must be approved support animals. the special pets are allowed after increasing demand. to get approval students will

need a letter from a licensed health care provider showing how the animal helps assist them with their disability. 6:09 now. we wake with slightly cooler temperatures thanks to the fog right now we're seeing across parts of the bay area, also looking live at anderson reservoir near morgan hill. some dense fog also along the coast as we will see those temperatures really warming up as we go into today. the castro right now you can see the fog in the distance. it's 59 degrees. and we're going to see the high temperatures along the coastline that will be cooler, reaching 64 at half moon bay and still 97 for livermore. i'll give you a look at the temperature trend for cupertino coming up in about three minutes. mike has an update on the crash for highway 101. >> that's right, kari. 17 on the radar, still blocked at the summit. anywhere north of there looks great until you get to the north bay. north of the foggy golden gate bridge a report of that crash at

it's 6:13 now on this friday morning. a live look outside at palo alto. things are looking pretty good as of now. as we've seen the fog along the coast and clear temperatures and clear sky conditions farther inland. in cupertino we are going to see the temperatures at 9:00 starting out in the lower 70s, rising into the mid-80s by lunch time. that's going to be above our average high temperature of 80 degrees reaching into the upper 80s again today. we'll talk about some cooler weather ahead especially as we

head into next week. that's coming up at 6:18. and we're looking at these travel times for hayward coming off the castro valley. it's friday. a lighter build but we have a big problem for the santa cruz mountains. highway 17 is blocked right now heading south. what we heard from chp the last few minutes. we'll get that update. it is friday. developing story right now at 6:14. tropical depression cindy spawning tornadoes as it moves across the south. an ef-2 tornado touched down just a few miles from downtown birmingham that happened yesterday and as you can see from that video ripped apart buildings in the process. you're looking there at the aftermath. at least three people were injured. cindy has been downgraded as it moves into the ohio valley region and the appalachian mountains. cindy are will be dumping plenty of rain along the way. another month, another record for the booming bay area real estate market. according to numbers crunched by core logic the median home sale are price for may reached

bloomberg. >> a favorite amongst vegans and healthy eaters, scott mcgrew has more. >> reporter: very influential hampton creek as well started by bill gates, among others. it's run into a fair amount of controversy lately. hampton creek makes the mayonnaise from plants. they call it just mayo. you've probably seen it on store shelves. target is removing the products over health concerns. now, to be clear, there has been no recall. hampton creek has no mention of concerns on its website this morning but in a statement to bloomberg the company said the allegations that our products are mislabelled or unsafe are false. there's a petition circulating around uber asking the founder and former ceo tr travis kalanick be reinstated. technically he has more power than anyone else at the company thanks how many shares he owns, but it's extremely unhikely he'll come back because he was pushed out by some very powerful investors. all the major u.s. banks passed the first half of their

the degrees but the record is 98 degrees. livermore just a few degrees shy of the record high set in 2006 of 104 degrees. warm in concord. napa expected to be a few degrees above the record. on this very warm day you may want to head to at&t park. the giants back in town. taking a live look there and forecast for today at first pitch at 62 degrees so you'll need to dress in layers. it will be windy, too, as the fog rolls back in. looking at the high temperatures for the south counseledy reaching in counties reaching into the upper 90s for the tri-valley and the east bay. and for the peninsula up to the mid-80s there but the mission district nice and cool, 73 degrees and some upper 80s, low 90s again for the north bay. as we head into the weekend this hot area of high pressure begins

to break down. the jet stream starts to bring back some cool temperatures but that may also fire up a few thunderstorms over the sierra. we'll be watching that. as we look at san francisco's seven-day forecast we'll be in the lower 70s for today and tomorrow then cooler heading into next week. that cooling trend for the inland valleys and we're going to have to come down still from that high heat. we're making some progress here as we watch the temperatures go into the low 80s by next week. might have some concerns if you're heading to the coast today. highway 17 is currently closed or at least blocked. traffic moves well. a fender-bender highway 101. not a major concern. i'll continue to monitor that. we've been following this, 17 and summit road is blocked right now. speed sensors cleared up. i don't think they've cleared. i will double-check and let you know. so far it was jammed up heading south and just shy of summit road. if you know summit road, that's

past. this year it could be affecting those drivers on july 23rd between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. that's the day and hours of the san francisco marathon. the board of directors of the golden gate bridge district looked at pictures of marathons past and realized between about 15,000 runners and roughly 4,500 northbound cars the only thing acceseparating them is a row of orange cones. that's not enough given recent terror attacks using vehicles in nic nice, france, and london. >> with our security coalition partners to include the chp and department of homeland security and the fbi. >> reporter: again, this may affect drivers on july 23rd, the day of the marathon between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. only affecting northbound lanes. southbound lanes are unaffected. those southbound lanes will

remain open. the district meeting here begins at the toll plaza at 10:00 a.m. i'm chuck coppola, "today in the bay." it's 6:33. palo alto police looking for this man they say was driving without pants. they say he expose d himself to two girls in different incidents in palo alto. the first incident happened near jordan middle school wednesday afternoon. the second just about a mile away. >> right now authorities still trying to piece together the moments leading up to a teenaged girl'sly fall down the cliffs of san francisco beach yesterday. lifeguard used a jet ski to reach the woman in foggy conditions and transport her to waiting paramedics. she did not survive. all of this unfolding yesterday near the legion of honor at land's end. the area has many hazards. >> we do have a lot of people

that lose their footing, fall from cliffs, some ocean rescues, people going into the water, again, to try to beat the heat. the waters out here are treacherous. >> rescuers say the woman suffered multiple injuries and fractures on her fall. her identity has not yet been released. new details on breaking news we first brought you yesterday morning. a deadly double shooting in brentwood turned out to be a botched home invasion robbery. the homeowner caught two armed men to break into his home wednesday night. they say the shooting appears to be in self-defense. a neighbor's surveillance camera captured some of the chaos. he says one of the suspects, robber, died in his front yard. >> he had a mask on his face, like out of a t-shirt, the eyes and nose and mouth cut out, gloves, hoodie, jacket, and he was bleeding out of his mouth. >> the names of the suspects have not been released. as for the homeowner he was voluntarily detained, later

released. he will not face charges. new this morning flooding that we're seeing here in the north bay is new video from marin county and it's king tides that are to blame. looking at all that standing water on highway 101 at the ramp which had to be closed in both directions for just a bit overnight. thankfully that flooding has since subsided. if you plan on driving through this morning, things should be all clear, mike. >> some might have been looking for a little pool. no major problems around the bay and what has disappeared from the sensors and the roadway is that full blockage of highway 17 now reinstating the traffic flow down to summit road. the two big rigs have cleared and folks can head to the coast on highway 17 heading to the n santa cruz side. 92 will take you to half moon bay. lots of coastal routes. cooler today. a smooth drive down the east shore freeway. slowing through berkeley and across the richmond to san

rafael bridge. a quick look at the golden gate bridge. there's a little bit of moisture. you might need to use the windshield wipers. a lot cooler and the crash north of here at the he robin williams tunnel has cleared from lanes. that's a cooler look. >> isn't it amazing. what a difference. >> a little bit of moisture. >> that's really great to see since we know it's been so hot inland. it will pro-out there and enjoy all of the events going on. tomorrow we're looking at the coastal temperatures right at about 70 degrees. the bay will be at 81 and inland temperatures up to 92 degrees. that's coming down from the triple digits we had yesterday. looking it at the forecast sunday, 69 degrees. you may even need a light jacket heading out there with the fog during the morning are for the bay we're up to 80 degrees. 88 inland on sunday. we have the pride festival

happening for tomorrow. we also are looking at some great weather. it really doesn't get better than this. we're talking about highs in the low 70s right up to 70 degrees by 3:00 and then as we go into the afternoon we're going to see a few more clouds mixing in. we'll be all bright and sunny throughout the day. you still may need sunscreen. to sonoma, the raceway, temperatures that will be slightly cooler to start but then by noontime we're up to 80 degrees. all of that sunshine throughout the day heating those temperature into the mid-80s. and then further south we're heading to santa cruz. you can check out some of those wood panelled cars and it will be in the mid-60s to start out during the morning. looking at the russian river l valley, temperatures still on the warm side but not too bad. 80 degrees today and then some upper 70s for the weekend. a few more clouds in the mix on

with the big parade sunday morning. 6:42. fremont police looking for more victims after apparent chain snatchings. kenyon thomas seen here was arrested over the weekend for allegedly ripping the chains off two victims earlier this month. the key to his arrest was this car. police say both victims gave a similar vehicle description. he admit ted his involvement in both robberies. police are looking for additional victims after those chain snatchings. some dramatic new video showing a texas child being tossed out of a moving car. you see it right there in the middle of the road. the child was fine except for a few scrapes and bruises. the car turned onto a street with the left back door opens up. you can a 1-year-old child being thrown out of the car. looks like he was obviously in a car seat.

the woman who shot that video says that she is sharing it to remind parents of the dangers of not properly locking the car doors or properly buckling in their children. very scary. the tallest building west of mississippi opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony. we are talking about the wilshire grand center in downtown los angeles. it is 1,100 feet and will host a hotel and office space there. the second tallest building on the west coast just 30 feet shorter than the wilshire grand center. even though it's summer, winter may be on people's minds today. more specifically next year's winter olympics in pyeongchang, south korea. the ioc calls today a day to learn about the olympic spirit. olympic day events at two ice rinks honoring polina edmunds. at just 15 years old she skated for the uz team in the 2014 games. one of today's events takes place in fremont. the other in san jose. some of america's best

athletes including two dozen olympians are to beat more than just the heat in sacramento right now. they're trying to win a spot on the united states track and field team for the summer world championships in london. yesterday was the first day of the u.s. track and field championships at sacramento state hornet stadium. it was also a record 108 degrees. athletes aren't the only ones braving the conditions. >> the sun just beating on my cavs was really, really hot. so that feeling of intense heat. >> i will never complain about the cold weather again, i promise. >> let's check back with you come winter. most of the women you heard from were there having children competing in the championships. it ends on sunday. nbc bay area airing events saturday and sunday that will start at 1:00 p.m. all right, making a stand in the name of a quality california state workers can no longer travel to texas and several other states on the taxpayers' dime. that is because of anti-lgb it t laws now implemented in those

napa. san francisco will see temperatures coming down as well reaching 71 degrees and looking live at san jose as the sun rises and as you get ready for this friday morning it will be another day for light colored clothing. it will be warm and some shorts weather especially if it's a casual day and enjoying the start of the weekend and also looking live now from pleasanton and the temperatures start out at 65 degrees. we're heading up to 96 degrees. you're making plans and may nee to get some yard work out of the way. you have to do it within the next couple of hours because our temperatures will still be quite warm reaching into the low 90s by noontime and mid-90s as we go throughout the day. and the seven-day forecast continues to bring those temperatures down, the return of fog keeps san francisco temperatures much cooler, in the low 60s, by early next week. and for the inland valleys still hot today but then by the end of the weekend we'll be in the
