good wednesday morning and thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we begin right away with breaking news in the south bay. a building in san jose up in flames this morning. crews scrambling, they have been, overnight to put it out. >> sbob redell with what's goin on right now. bob, have crews made some progress? >> reporter: it looks like they definitely have. good morning to you, sam and laura. the building in question right beyond the fire trucks here is an abandoned office building, used to hold a dentist office and some other offices and businesses in had there. this is situated in a residential area. a lot of homes around here. you have this two-story building that attaches to a single story that caught fire around 2:20

this morning. the two ladders that were dumping water on the building shut off. that's a sign of progress. they definitely had the fire contained. unfortunately, they did have to go on the defensive pretty much after they arrived this morning about 15 minutes after they arrived because the fire was so intense and about 45 minutes after they arrived they had to go and be on the defensive, just keeping the fire contained which they were able to do. i did speak with a couple of people who live in the area who said they did hear fireworks last night. but according to the fire department, they do not believe that fireworks was the cause. they believe it might have been some homeless people who had been living in the structure or around the structure. they did admit, though, they have not made a definitive declaration on what caused the fire. right now their initial thought is it was somebody, a homeless person living in the area that may have accidentally started the fire but not fireworks.

reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." it is 4:31 right now and happening now this is new video just in to our newsroom showing massive flames from a hay fire burning in east contra costa county. it's happening at deer valley road near the kaiser hospital. cal fire says it's letting the fire burn itself out because will there isn't a water supply nearby. we're told the fire is considered suspicious but it's not clear if fireworks are to blame. firefighters he have been battling it since 1 is 1:00 last night. we'll continue to track this story throughout the morning. just in to our newsroom we've learned at least five people right now are being questioned this morning after a situation that developed inside of a home in san jose overnight. investigators were called to the scene off center road just north of capital expressway. we have a crew in the neighborhood right now talking to police, and we are told somebody inside the home called 911 and said there was a person there brandishing a weapon.

san jose police officers arrived on the scene early this morning. they questioned several people there. as soon as we get more information we are going to bring that to you. also new this morning, a violent night at the alameda county fair. at least ten people were arrested after a brawl broke out. pepper spray was used to break it up. >> the show brought out thousands of people for the fourth of july. terry mcsweeney has more from pleasanton. >> reporter: this is the birth of our nation, the celebration of a historic moment here right now celebrating in more ways than one. >> this is our nation's birthday and it happens to be my birthday so, hey, if we both can celebrate it this beautiful, why not? >> reporter: the fair grounds were packed for america's birthday party. tens of thousands bask ed in th glow of the fireworks. >> it's a really cool celebration. the fireworks are great.

i'm really enjoying the moment. >> reporter: earlier several fights broke out. police say at least ten arrests. >> tonight there were altercations here on the property. the police were able to come in, remove the youth, and then we were able to go on. >> reporter: also earlier a traffic jam to get in, but all these people arrived after 6:00 and the gates had already closed. about 40,000 got in. thousands did not. did you know the gates are closing at 6:00? >> no. they are? >> i'm so stupid for coming this late. >> reporter: cindy caan was glad to have gotten here this early, glad to have her spirits soaring. >> what a beautiful night. i wish i could be up in the sky with them. >> reporter: terry mcsweeney, nbc news. an officer of the nypd was fatally shot while sitting in her patrol car. they are calling the shooting unpro-provoked. the officer, miosotis familia

was shot in the head. she was taken to the hospital where she was later died. >> she was sitting in the vehicle and he came up and fired a round into the vehicle. i don't know if anything else could be more unprovoked than that. >> right afterwards two officers spotted a man running down the street just a block away from where the shooting happened. police say the man drew a gun when officers approached him forcing them to shoot and kill him. police have not said if the gun recovered from the man was the same one used to kill the police officer. >> very tragic. it is 4:35 right now. a lot of people are talking about the fireworks show they saw akoss the bay area. for many there were some obstacles in the way to their viewing. how the fog factored in to the annual san francisco city tradition. well, at least it was clear in the south bay. now the clouds have rolled in as

we take a live look outside in san jose. the temperature trend will reach into the low 80s by this afternoon. another warm day and it heats up. more on that up next. seeing a little bit of showing and it looks like it may be due to a collision causing a little bit of a delay along the bridge. more details in just a bit.

the biggest fireworks show in the bay area had some interference from the fog. >> i'd say. thousands of people crowded along the waterfront for the celebration. "today in the bay's jean elle has more. >> reporter: fireworks in the fog in san francisco. >> basically the high ones you can't see them in the fog. >> reporter: people who braved the cold say it was delightful and disappointing all at once. >> lots of people, lots of energy. it would have been nice if the fog wasn't so low. >> i think it would have been fantastic. >> reporter: for thousands it was a day of food and fun on fisherman's wharf with police keeping a close eye. celebrations had people dancing. for some it was one way to stay

warm, blankets was another. >> and we can always go to the deli and have hot cocoa. >> reporter: most had a plan. in town from las vegas, alicia planned to grin and bear it. >> i went on a tour and it was freezing cold but i'll be all right. >> reporter: are you going to buy a sweatshirt maybe? >> maybe. >> reporter: shops filled with cold visitors. fleece sweatshirts are always the number one seller on the fourth of july. >> they always come in, oh, i need a sweater and they're really cold. >> reporter: fleeces, cold and fog are all part of the show in san francisco. jean e willlle, nbc bay area ne. 4:40. se celebrations on the "uss hornet" had an abrupt end due to a power outage. it was reported about 3:30 p.m. "the uss hornet" started celebrations at 2:00 but lost power about 3:25.

museum officials evacuated the ship out of safety concerns because they couldn't say for sure when the power would be fully restored. they canceled the event. >> that's a bummer. 4:41. coming up, the new app that's giving parents an easy way to know about school districts. but first, a live look outside right now at the san mateo bridge and already we are seeing major differences this morning from what it was like yesterday as people are getting back on the ride and going back to work.

a very good wednesday morning to you. the fog casting shadows over san francisco this morning. that seemed to be the problem last night. a lot of people went to the fireworks show there. hard to show up for it. the fireworks are there. just couldn't see through the fog. 4:44 right now. people were are ready to party. >> i think they were anyway. >> well, that's true. we saw that yesterday. but i feel jerry seinfeld felt about newman. carl, back again, newman. wrong audience. >> we know that no one could really see anything, that was the problem. at least for the interior parts of the bay area we were able to have a nice, clear view. it was a nice night but

everyone's probably waking up this morning having a hard time getting out of bed and our temperatures now in the upper 50s for the inland areas and patchy fog in the north bay, 52 degrees and in san francisco right now we still have the fog and drizzle and it's 53 degrees. you're going to see the high temperatures today in the south county reaching into the upper 80s. now seven-day forecast coming up at the bottom of the screen. low 80s from milpitas today and the mostly sunny sky up to 88 degrees in walnut creek and 87 in danville. oakland today 72. and 77 in palo alto. san francisco will have another foggy day and cool temperatures with highs in the low 60s and low 80s for much of the north bay. napa up to 83 degrees. as we look out the window now you're getting ready for what will be a very warm afternoon. so don't forget to wear something that will keep you nice and cool like short sleeves and shorts. you may want to bring the sunglasses, too, unless you're in san francisco. if you're heading to sonoma wine

country today, a nice one starting out with some cool temperatures, mostly sunny skies throughout the day and expect a high temperature to reach up to 84 degrees by 4:00. and we also have the first wednesday street party happening in pleasanton. we continue on the party from the fourth of july into today. and it's going to be up to 82 degrees the at 6:00. temperatures will start to come down then and we'll quickly see the temperatures going down as we go through the rest of the evening. san francisco will not see any changes over the next several days, only looking at the highs in the low to mid-60s, upper 60s by the end of the weekend, but the interior areas of the bay will be very hot reaching into the 90s starting tomorrow and continuing through early next week with some very warm weather. i'll have more on that. let's head over to vianey now for an update on how it looks on the roads early this morning. >> it's still pretty light. more people will probably be out on the road this early morning but the speed sensors look

fairly good this hour. however, chp is reporting what looks to be a crash involving multiple vehicles along westbound 580 just east of 680. it appears several lanes may be blocked in the area so they are working to clear this. i think they are on the scene as of now. we'll bring you more details as that becomes available. another fend er-bender on the by bridge. it looks like that has cleared off just over to the right-hand shoulder. south bay drive times, northbound 101, highway 87. to highway 101 about ten minutes and a live look outside at that bay bridge toll plaza. we can see there's still a couple cars backing up in that area so we'll bring you more details. back to you. >> vianey, thank you very much. 4:47 right now. financing marin county transit projects comes at a three-way cost for homeowners. of course the new state gas tax. that's the first revenue stream. the marin independent journal reporting that had will bring in $14 million a year for local roads, buses, rails and highways. second, the recent

transportation commission proposal to raise toll fees in the county. and now, third, a county sales tax for transit that has a chance to be renewed early on the 2018 ballot. it could be the end of the line for a cross-country amtrak ride if president donald trump's proposed cuts to the certificse through. the proposed 2018 fiscal budget eliminates funding for long distance amtrak service. that would cut service to 220 cities in 23 different states. the line such as the capital corridor from san jose to sacramento would still be around but other lines like the coastal star light would have to end. >> 4:48. happening now german security forces are preparing for more violent protests ahead of the g-20 summit this week. 8,000 demonstrators are expected to converge on the northern city of hamburg. police he are banning people from setting up camp as pr protesters try to stir up violence. 20,000 police officers will secure the july event. president trump is expected to

attend the summit. california judges can actually say no to reducing three-strike sentences. the "l.a. times" reporting the california supreme court rule to allow judges to decide whether or not to ease sentences on three strikes inmates. "the times" says it came in an appeal filed for two men eligible under prop 36 passed a few years ago. the report says an inmate's sentence could be shortened if the offense that put them away wasn't serious or violent. there's a way to see how schools measure up from county to county all in the palm of your hand. an app that lets you view details like school districts, contact information and statistics. you can find schools on the map by cities, counties, or school districts. it initially came out in may. the app had its latest update last week. the u.s. agriculture department right now trying to figure out ways to spare school kids from lunch shame.

new policies this month that encourages schools to work with parents on making sure kids don't go hungry if they can't afford meals. a new state survey, the department of managed health care published a survey for k kaiser's efforts to improve services. among the issues kaiser struggled with scheduling follow-up appointments for mental health patients. kaiser in a statement to kaiser health news said it hired more than 1,000 psychiatrists and therapists to improve health services. as we reported on earlier this week, governor jerry browne looking to extend california's landmark trade, the program, of course, aimed at cutting carbon emissions from businesses. the governor is working on a deal right now with lawmakers in sacramento, business groups and environmentalists to get it ready for a vote by monday. lawmakers start their sum earp recess on july 21st.

of july fireworks show. cue the band. fireworks in the capital, hundreds of thousands jamming on the national mall for a full day of festivities including a concert there. and of course in our own backyard a fireworks display after last night's san jose giants game at municipal stadium. just one of more than a dozen shows. >> this was not a typical celebration. >> visitors at squaw valley did hit the slopes dressed in red, white and blue. this is a cool picture from one of our viewers. squaw valley is one of two resorts that is still open right now despite the fact we are past july 4th thanks to a huge snowfall this year. as you can see no heavy snowsuits were required. 4:56 right now. great weather continues across the bay area.

the same with fog and drizzling for a while in san francisco and along the coast. while we will still start out with some clouds in the inland areas we'll see that clearing up as we go through the day. the north bay, if you step out the door, 51 degrees. highs this afternoon a little bit warmer in some spots like the tri-valley up to 88 degrees. we'll talk more about this coming up. vianey is track iing how it loo on the roads this morning. >> a lot more action this morning. no major accidents just yet. we're definitely seeing a lot more spots with some slowing and more traffic. i think laura said a the lot of people were returning to work. a traffic collision just east of 680. it looks like they have cleared one of the lanes. two lanes blocked. it looks like it may be involving multiple vehicles but for now we're only seeing slowing in that area. back to you. >> thanks for the latest there, vianey. we do continue to follow breaking news this morning in the south bay. firefighters still at the scene
