the same with fog and drizzling for a while in san francisco and along the coast. while we will still start out with some clouds in the inland areas we'll see that clearing up as we go through the day. the north bay, if you step out the door, 51 degrees. highs this afternoon a little bit warmer in some spots like the tri-valley up to 88 degrees. we'll talk more about this coming up. vianey is track iing how it loo on the roads this morning. >> a lot more action this morning. no major accidents just yet. we're definitely seeing a lot more spots with some slowing and more traffic. i think laura said a the lot of people were returning to work. a traffic collision just east of 680. it looks like they have cleared one of the lanes. two lanes blocked. it looks like it may be involving multiple vehicles but for now we're only seeing slowing in that area. back to you. >> thanks for the latest there, vianey. we do continue to follow breaking news this morning in the south bay. firefighters still at the scene of a building after it went up

in flames. >> this was scary at one point this morning. "today in the bay" joins us live with all the progress made in the last hour or so. bob, what are you seeing? >> reporter: sam and laura, you can see behind me the fire is now out. the san jose fire department is just keeping an eye on this structure to make sure there are no hot spots that will flare up. they have two ladder hoses in case they have to put out any flare-ups. the long, narrow abandoned building used to house medical offices. about half of it's two story. the rest single story. the fire department started to make an attack on the inside when they arrived but temporarily lost their water when the supply line burst, so they had to pull out and go on the defensive. they called for a third alarm. and in spite of the fireworks that were going off in this neighborhood last night, this is based on my conversation with a couple of neighbors, the fire department says they do not believe that fireworks were the cause because the origin of the

fire, they believe, was on the inside and they said they did hear from at least one person, perhaps homeless people, were living in this structure. during the fighting of the fire, the fire department did have to evacuate a couple of people who lived in the next door houses because there was so much smoke. there was a fear of carbon monoxide poisoninging. now the fire is out those people are back home and this fire in this abandoned building you can see behind me is out. one of the tricks here if you look to the left side it's hard to see but on the other side there are homes so there was a risk of this fire spreading. the san jose fire department was able to keep it contained. reporting live, bob redell, b "today in the bay." >> very fortunate outcome for those homeowners. thank you very much, bob. 5:02. new this morning, our first look at footage that reportedly shows a missile being launched from north korea.

north korea later claimed to have successfully tested that icbm for the first time. the u.s. and south korean officials confirmed it yesterday that it was, in fact, a long-range intercontinental missile. it fell in the sea after that test. a few minutes ago president trump tweeting out, quote, trade between china and north korea grew almost 40% in the first quarter. so much for china working with us, but we had to give it a try. earlier this year trump had asked china to step in and put more pressure on north korea. this coming as president trump is heading overseas this morning and will this is a looming question about how his one-on-one with russia's president will will go on friday. >> "today in the bay's" tracie potts is in washington with what we can expect from that important meeting. good morning, tracie. >> reporter: laura and sam, good morning. good morning, everyone. it is a very important meeting and before it president trump is heading directly this morning to poland where he hopes to build

goodwill and maybe even get positive vibes going before heading to the g-20 where russia and some of his other meetings could be a bit more tense. today poland is preparing for the arrival of president trump. he'll join a conference of central european and baltic nations and give a major speech in warsaw to reassure nato allies that america won't abandon them. >> a lot of our eastern european allies are very concerned about russia's aggression in the last few years. >> reporter: that could come up in a much anticipate d meeting with russia's president at the g-20 summit on friday, their first. the white house says there's no official agenda. >> the fact you're going into this thing, that you have no agenda, i think speaks volumes to the preparedness of this president. >> reporter: the administration isn't giving any clues whether the president will confront vladimir putin about interfering in the u.s. presidential election. >> it will be to his detriment if he doesn't because it will be the thing everyone will talk about if they don't address it. >> if he doesn't bring up interference in the 2016 election he will convey to putin

that he's weak. >> reporter: the g-20 sure to discuss responding to north korea's latest missile launch. >> we're very close, much closer than we've been in previous administrations for a real military collision with north korea. >> reporter: president trump is hoping to put pressure on north korea's ally, china, to intervene. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. all new this morning violence breaks out at the alameda county fair amid fourth of july celebrations. and we now know at least ten people were arrested. a brawl broke out as thousands were preparing for the fireworks show. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos with new information we're learning. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and sam. as of this morning we can still report there were ten arrests made here at the alameda county fair grounds during the fourth of july event that took place last night. and as far as the ages of those arrested they range from 15 to 20 years of age. now let's show you the new video from last night.

you can see police, there are many departments here on the ground to cover this event last night, a heavy police presence, and that presence was definitely needed when you take into account these incidents. according to the alameda county sheriff's office they responded to a large number of melees involving several people. the individuals arrested, as i mentioned, ranged from teenagers to young adults, and they were accused of resisting arrest, battery, and assault. now according to the sheriff's office they had to use batons and pepper spray to maintain order last night. the sheriff's deputy ex mand how last night compared to past experiences at the fair. >> i've been at the county fair for a number of years. it is a safe environment, but, unfortunately, today this fourth of july we saw a crowd enter the fair grounds that were interested in chaos and anarchy. >> reporter: a sheriff's deputy going on to say this was a unique experience as the groups caused trouble throughout the evening. now most of the juveniles who were taken into custody were

released to their parents, but those adults were taken to jail. we're live in pleasanton, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> all right. thanks for the latest there, pete. it is 5:07 right now. breaking news this morning out of new york. a 12-year veteran of the new york police department fatally shot sitting in her patrol car. police are calling the shooting unprovoked. it happened in the bronx. the officer miosotis familia was in a marked vehicle with a partner when someone shot through the window striking her in the head. she was taken to the hospital where she later died. two officers spotted a man running down the street just a block from where the shooting happened. police say that man drew a gun when officers approached forcing them to shoot and kill him. police have not said if the gun recovered from that man was the same one used to kill the officer. ♪

all right, back to the festivities from last night, back here in the bay area, great america's fireworks show did not go on without a hitch. apparently there was some sort of problem that created a 20-minute delay in the finale. the show abruptly stopped for some reason. them as they began to leave the finale suddenly lit up the sky minutes later. a park's spokesperson acknowledged the problem but has not said exactly what happens. along with a the planned fireworks shows there were plenty that were unplanned and therefore illegal. that was the case in several san jose neighborhoods overnight. we rode along with the fire department as they were responding to calls all night long about illegal fire work. it is their busiest day of the year last year and again this year. firefighters say they had trouble driving down streets in the event of an emergency. >> when they respond sometimes there are access issues, sometimes there's such an abundance of fireworks our crews are having trouble getting to

the actual emergency event. >> two fire investigators teamed up with police to issue tickets for illegal fireworks. we do not have any word yet on how many fines were handed out. >> illegal left turns have calls for better traffic enforcement. the city is testing a year long pilot program to improve traffic safety. left it turns on to middle field were a problem at hawthorne and everett avenues. there are restrictions on them. it is 5:09 on this wednesday morning. maybe it's monday for you as we are seeing the low clouds and fog right now over san francisco. low visibility once again. we start out at 56 degrees. and then here is a look at the temperature trend as we go through the day. so it will be very cool to start. only some mid-50s and then once again up to 63 degrees. looking at san jose as we will see some mostly sunny skies throughout the day. a few clouds to start.

it will be at 60 degrees during the morning and this afternoon is looking very nice but it will be warm, too, to 83 degrees by 4:00 this afternoon. so we'll talk more about some warm er temperatures in the forecast over the next few days. vianey gets us out there on the roadways looking more busy this morning. yeah, definitely. yesterday we had little to no traffic collisions. we did have, of course, a couple of fender benders. but today we are seeing some slowing along 580 westbound and it's already causing some delays it appears even though they did clear the one lane. one lane does remain blocked which is causing some backup. our speed sensors are picking up some of the slowing. if we look at our tri-valley drive times, westbound 580 towards the 6 0 about a 30-minute delay. hopefully they can clear that out in the next couple of minutes. 680 to vargas ten minutes. back to you. >> thank you. coming up next, terrifying moments as fireworks explode and leave a man in the hospital and car in shambles.

as we go into the weekend our temperatures heat up. i'll have a look at that coming up at 5:18. >> it may only be after 5:00 but we're seeing a very busy bay bridge toll plaza so you may want to head out now because it looks like that regular daily commute traffic is back on track. back to you. 5:14 right now. we talk about the dangers of fireworks and using them properly. terrifying moments for a lodi suffering from major injuries this morning after a fire work exploded in his hand. this happened while he was sitting inside of his car. police released these photos after somebody reported the explosion about 3:00 yesterday afternoon. when officers arrived they found a heavily cracked windshield and blood on the passenger door. three people are injured this morning after a home exploded in missouri on the fourth of july. this happened in the st. joseph area yesterday morning. as you can see the home reduced to rubble following the explosion. officials say three people were pulled from the home by

neighbors who ran to the rescue as this was happening. they're all expected to be okay. the cause of the explosion is still a mystery this morning. new video in showing an intense res. strangers jumping into action to pull a truck driver to safety after truck crashed and overturned on a pennsylvania highway. the cell phone video shows the tractor-trailer had been driving erratically. the truck was weaving back and forth before it crashed eventually overturned spilling its contents all over the highway. then several people rushed to the driver's aid. you saw that video earlier. they smashed the windshield to help free the driver. no word on how he is doing this morning. more video to show you this morning. this in southernc california as police officers smashed into a driver after a police chase. it happened late night in los angeles. officers used a hit maneuver, eventually hitting the bumper to

spin the car out of control before it eventually slammed into a light post. the driver of the vehicle followed officers' instructions, was taken into custody, eventually followed instructions, we should say, and was taken into custody without further incident. turning right now to business and tech news this morning, samsung is reportedly working on a smart speaker powered by its new voice assistant. not too much is known about the device including what kind of features it will have or even a release date. the samsung speaker will enter a very crowded market with amazon's echo, google home, microsoft's cortana and apple home pod. in other business and tech news, ticketmaster launching a new system to hopefully kill long lines at concert venues. >> let's check this with kate rodgers live from cnbc headquarters. good morning, kate. hey there, good morning to you both. wall street could come under

early pressure a mixed session that saw the dow briefly touch an all-time high. markets are mixed but asia was mostly higher as investors appeared to shrug off the latest missile launch. look for data on factory orders and the minutes from last month's fed meeting when the central bank decided to raise interest rates. on monday the dow rose 129 points while the nasdaq fell 30 points to 6110. volvo says it will only make cars with electric motors starting in 2019. it will become the first traditional automaker to stop producing vehicles powered solely by internal combustion engine. they will make three types of cars, pure electric, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid which has a small gas engine and large battery. ticketmaster is launching a new system to get rid of long lines at stadiums and other venues. it uses ultra sonic audio or smart tones from your phone to verify your mobile ticket and id instead of having to scan a bar

>> and took the baby, too. >> those are funny. you may be doing that head iing out to the at&t park. we are going to have some very cool weather in san francisco. we've been dealing with the clouds and the fog. it's not going anywhere. even as we head into the weekend. as we get a look out the window now looking live over oakland it's 58 degrees and you see the clouds we are seeing in san francisco. low visibility once again this morning, and our temperatures start out at 56 degrees in san francisco. 56 in napa and it's 59 degrees in livermore. and looking at our high temperatures today in the south bay, into the low to mid-80s and then we'll see upper 80s from morgan hill and gilroy. heading over to the east bay we'll be up to 76 degrees in hayward while 89 degrees in concord, the air conditioner on full blast there up to 75 in belmont and some nice, comfo comfortable weather for the peninsula, san francisco all cool, reaching 63 today in the

mission district and 83 in novato and also 83 degrees in napa. so if you're making plans to head to the beach today, it is still going to be fairly chilly. you'll get there. you'll need some long sleeves and also some mostly cloudy skies throughout the day. so only times of sun during the afternoon. if you're going hiking on some of the trails on the peninsula, it is going to be cool especially around half moon bay, staying along the coast. we'll be in the upper 50s for the afternoon and some peaks of sunshine here and there but for some hotter weather you may want to hit the links in the tri-valley today. it's going to start out at 67 degrees and you may want to make sure tee time is fairly early as temperatures heat up around noon to 83 degrees and reaching into the low 90s in a few spots. meantime san francisco keeps those temperatures in the low to mid-60s. over the next several days the fog is not going to be clearing and we will also have some sunshine for the interior parts

of the bay area. inland reaching into the low 90s over the next several days so it's going to definitely feel like it's july. you're going to feel that heat ramping up as we get closer to the weekend. vianey, what's happening on the roads? seems like there's a lot more cars this morning. definitely. we're seeing traffic building quicker than it was typically yesterday. people are heading back to work and they're trying to avoid all of those hot spots. now right now we are seeing what looks like maybe a stalled vehicle right before the bay bridge toll plaza. that may be causing some delays right before you get on and off of the bay bridge. we'll see if they can clear that off to the right-hand shoulder. other than that 580 showing slowing. and right now our south bay drive times still pretty smooth northbound 101 to highway 87 about 13 minutes. northbound 87 to highway 101 about at the point minutes. if we take a live look in observing along 880 look at how many cars are already out on the road. it's getting pretty busy.

are 5:24 on your wednesday morning. a san jose earthquake soccer player is in critical condition this morning after an accident at lake tahoe. in a statement released by the team, silva had to be pulled out of the water while swimming in lake tahoe yesterday morning. he was rushed to the hospital. he is in critical condition. silva is on loan from the earthquake united soccer league affiliate in reno. >> we pray that he pulls through. 5:25 right now. thousands of people celebrating july 4th were hang iing out in lake tahoe. they noticed something a little different about the beaches this year. >> so much less shoreline for people to really party on and get the run-off raised water levels higher than normal. lake tahoe is considered full for the first time in 11 years. >> after the winter we had

out there. you may have to take your coffee to go. back to you. >> leave some ex he tra time. thank you, vianey. breaking news out of the south bay. a building goes up in flames this morning. crews are still out there looking for hot spots. we've been bringing you live reports since we came on air at 4:30. >> bob redell is off williams road with what's going on right now. bob? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and sam. as you can see this was a three-alarm fire that is now out. it's been out for a good hour and a half this morning since around 4:00 this morning. the san jose fire department is on fire watch. that's why they have the two ladder hoses in case they need to turn the water back on to put out any flames. what burned was a long, narrow abandoned building, partially two story, partially single that used to house medical offices. if you're not familiar with the area you have this long building on fire with homes near by which made it a very dangerous

situation. it started around 2:20 this morning. the fire department started to make an attack when one of the water supply lines burst. that's when the fire began to vent through the roof. the decision was made to go on the defensive, letting the building burn but keeping it contained in that space. we did speak with neighbors who heard fireworks in the area last night but a fire captain we spoke with doesn't think fireworks was the cause. believes it might have been homeless people who had been living at the property. >> it's an ongoing issue with our homeless population, so we want to make sure we're cognizant they have a place to stay that's safe if they so choose. in this case it's very common for boarded up facilities to become de facto homeless encampments. i hope that wasn't the case here but the fire did start inside. >> reporter: the fire department did say they talked to neighbors who saw some people leaving

around the time of the fire. they did certificate, the firefighters did search the interior of the building and fortunately did not find anyone inside. they did evacuate two homes next door and had other shelter in place over smoke and carbon monoxide poisoning. they have been let back in. bob redell, b"today in the bay." ♪ >> pretty nice there. the biggest fireworks show in the bay area, however, couldn't be seen by a lot of people because of the fog. thousands of people crowded along the waterfront in san francisco to see the fourth of july celebrations. the people we spoke to say despite the weather they enjoyed the show. >> lots of people, lots of energy. it would have been nice if the fog wasn't so low. >> i think they were fantastic. it's just the cloud cover. >> food and fun on fisherman's wharf they made the most of it.

fleece sweatshirts always the number one seller on the fourth of july. >> rock that hot pink no less. 4:33 on your wednesday. celebrations on "the uss hornet" had an abrupt end due to a power outage. it was reported about 3:30 in the afternoon. roughly 90 minutes after "the uss hornet" started its fourth of july celebrations. they had to evacuate out of safety concerns because they weren't sure when the power would be fully restored. organizers decided to cancel the event. a killer armed and dangerous still on the run after shooting a young woman in a house. officers swarmed the house about 5:00 p.m. on monday night. someone called 911 about possible gunshots heard inside. officers searched the home and found a 20-year-old woman in a room shot to death. neighbors who didn't want to be

seen on camera say the house had constant loud activity. one even calling it animal house. >> i did hear, like i said, arguing between two people but never something i would imagine something like this would happen. >> police say the house is rented by two college students but would not say if they were involved in the homicide. so far no information about a suspect. all right, a follow-up on a horrible story. a 3-month-old boy remains in critical condition this morning after a hit-and-run crash that killed his two brothers. a family spokesperson tells us the baby is still unable to breathe on his own. aida reyes lost her two sons. chp says another driver slammed into her car on the highway at highway 4 and then bolted from the scene. police did arrest 35-year-old lemuel wilson jr. after he went

to the hospital for care and turned himself in. he is facing two counts of vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident causing great bodily injury. new details now on a troubling investigation in the east bay. this morning berkeley police searching for the person responsible for spray painting homes and cars. now police say the vandalism has risen to the level of hate crimes. on people's cars on hillside drive last week. one victim is wondering why this neighborhood was targeted. >> it kind of feels misplaced in a way because all of the people who park around here are activists. >> police say they have promi promising leads and they're looking for anyone with information to come forward. >> in a legal twist to a voter approved measure california judges can say no to reducing three strike sentences. the "l.a. times" reporting the california supreme court's rule

it's stop and go traffic from there. 5:42. happening now massive flames at a hay fire in east contra costa county. this is near kaiser hospital. we have video from earlier this morning. officials tell us the fire is considered suspicious. we'll continue to track the story throughout the morning. >> at least five people are being questioned. just north of the capital expressway, we're told somebody inside a home called 911 and said there was a person there brandishing a weapon. san jose police officers arrived on the scene and questioned several people.

services. among the issues identified by the survey it says that kaiser struggled with scheduling follow-up appointments. kaiser in a follow-up said it hired more than 1,000 new psychiatrists and therapists in the last two years to improve health services. right now governor jerry brown looking to extend the landmark and trade legislation at cutting carbon emissions. governor brown is working on a new deal right now with lawmakers. to get it ready for a monday vote. they start their sum earp recess july 21st. key points focus on air pollution without costing businesseses or consumers too much money. >> it could be the end of the line for cross-country amtrak rides. the proposed 2018 fiscal budget eliminates funding.

one surfer says she was unlucky to land on a stingray when she was knocked off her surfboard. >> it really hurt. i either hit a sea shell or a stingray and it started to sting badly and i can feel it everywhere on my foot. >> most stings are considered minor injuries but some people can be allergic. lifeguards say beachgoers should shuffle their feet while walking in the water trying to scare the sting rays away. if you're hoping to beat the heat at the pool instead of the beach it's important to make sure your kids stay safe. 17 children ground every year on average just during the fourth of july holiday week. what can you do to keep your kids safe? make sure at least one adult is the designated water watcher. you really have to pay attention. also make sure home pools have
