have been looking for. donald trump jr. did confirm he met with a kremlin russian lawyer in the days just after after his father clinched the nomination for president. he was promised damaging information about hillary clinton but he wasn't the only one in the room. also in attendance, paul manafort and trump's son-in-law jared kushner. a statement read in part i was asked to have a meeting by an acquaintance with an individual who i was told might have information helpful to the campaign. i was not told her name prior to the meeting. the meeting lasted approximately 20 to 30 minutes. that was the end of it and there was no further contact or follow-up of any kind. my father knew nothing of the meeting or these events. trump junior also said the lawyers statements were quote,

vague, am biggous and mad no sense, adding that it quickly became clear that she had no meaningful information. before changing subjects to discuss the adoption of russian children. a statement from president trump's personal lawyer reiterated the president was not aware of the meeting. >> reince priebus. >> it was a very short meeting. it was a meeting apparently about russian adoption and after about 20 minutes the meeting ended and that was the end of it. >> but listen to this assessment from former george w. bush ethics chief richard painter. >> the bush administration never would have tolerated this, and if this story is true we'd have one if not both of them in custody by now, and we'd be asking them a lot of questions because this is unacceptable. this boards on treason. it's self-treason. depending on whether "the new york times" story is true. >> the leaked meeting comes as the president says it's time for the u.s. to work with russia and

move past the 2016 election issue. while also pushing for a cyber security partnership with moscow that's causing concern in parts of washington. for more we're joined by nbc's tracie potts and what is the president proposing and what the reaction from republicans. >> reporter: the president wanted to come up with some cyber security unit to guard against election hacking. that was his initial tweet on this. but then the republican response. we heard from ben sasse, obviously will not happen. it is inexplicably bizarre he says. from marco rubio, partnering with putin on a cyber security unit is akin to partnering with assad on a chemical weapons unit. and more from other republicans. >> it's not the dumbest idea but it's pretty close. he is literally the only person

i know of who has any doubt that russia attacked our election in 2016. >> i am sure that putin could be of enormous assistance in that effort since he's doing the hacking. >> reporter: now, we're getting more reaction from the president as well. he tweeted after hearing some of that feedback that the fact he and putin talked about a cyber security unit doesn't mean it can actually happen. it can't. lot of discussion about that idea here in washington today. >> tracie potts, thank you. breaking overnight. a new york state trooper was killed in the line of duty in new york. officials say the trooper was responding to a call of shots fired during a domestic dispute when he was fatally shot. the suspect, a 32-year-old active duty army infantryman has surrendered to law enforcement. his wife was also found dead at the scene. a local news station reports

that he was charged with both first and second degree murder. and is being held without bail. celebrations have begun as iraq prepares to declare victory in its battle to retake mosul. the country's prime minister congratulating soldiers for a successful operation against isis. which had occupied mosul for three years. and yet, the fighting continues against the remaining militants who still hold a few small patches of ground. we're in london this morning. good evening to you. how close are the iraqis to victory here and what's next for mosul? >> reporter: well a clear sign that iraqi forces have retaken mosul. to celebrate with iraqi troops as they drove isis militants from most of their last strongholds. but the fighting still continues. iraqi forces are pushing to retake the last patch of ground where islamic state militants

are holding on to a tiny portion of the old city which is west of the tigris river. a senior iraqi general says his men, closely backed by u.s. coalition air strikes, are continuing to advance and clearing territory in the old city. but they believe there's hundreds of isis fighters that still remain in the neighborhood and they're using their families including women and children as human shields, but the fighting appears to be in the dying stages of what's been a bitter battle that's raged for nearly nine months. the iraqi prime minister calling it a victory. now a massive reconstruction project. >> all right, thank you. greek police have arrested at least 11 suspects in the killing of an american tourist in a bar brawl. eight of the suspects were charged with homicide with intent. a lawyer for one of them says his client will plead not guilty. he says the local resident did hurt the america but claims he did not hit him on the head. the 22-year-old texan bakari

henderson was found dead outside a bar with serious head wounds. he was working on a photo shoot to launch a new clothing line. he was on a greek resort island and the circumstances of the bar fight were not immediately clear, but police say it involved two groups of people including bar staff. this morning, at least 50 large wildfires and scorching heat have communities in the west on edge. in california, mandatory evacuations are in effect for thousands of people while people are without power. >> reporter: a fight for control, massive tanker planes trying to contain some of the 50 large wildfires in 11 states from the air. on the ground, some 5,000 firefighters are now on the front lines of 14 blazes burning across california, including the explosive whittier fire in santa barbara county

raging out of control. >> this is when the fire behavior starts to really pick up. >> reporter: in just one day it's chewed through thousands of acres destroying at least 20 structures including homes. >> it moved at a pretty quick pace through here and it burned really hot. the house that was standing right here didn't have a chance. >> reporter: the flames engulfed the children's nature camp, forcing the staff to evacuate leaving behind several animals. just two miles away campers barely made it out alive at the circle v ranch. fortunately, firefighters were able to get everyone to safety before the camp was torched. parents relieved. >> they said the phone lines were down and the firefighters were fighting the fire. >> reporter: and in los angeles, flames of a different kind when an explosion at a power plant left 140,000 people in the dark, some waiting 12 hours before it was restored. >> we don't have anything. we're going to have to sleep in the heat. >> reporter: temperatures expected to cool but not fast enough for crews stretched thin fighting flames on multiple fronts. >> that was stooeft patterson

weekend where weeks of rain caused a five-story building to collapse. the fast-moving river had washed away its foundation. fortunately, residents were evacuated ahead of time. two people suffered minor injuries during today's running of the bulls in pamplona, spain. five people, including four americans, have been gored so far in the week-long festival. officials say one was in serious condition after a bull rammed its horn through his left arm and dragged him for several yards. this is the second time one of those americans has been gored. despite his injuries this 35-year-old rider from chicago swears he will run again before the festival ends on friday. next time we'll have the same luck of this man who ignored being bored while flips right over the bull. just dodged him. congress gets back into session today after their july 4th break and after a very little if any progress was made on repealing obamacare. this morning, president trump is pushing them to get a bill on the desk. tweeting this, i couldn't imagine that congress wouldn't dare to leave washington without
