friday when the flames erupted. now the next steps in this investigation. bob? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. a number of hours from now the federal bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms will send out a so-called national response team to the site here. the burned down construction site that you can see behind me which is still shut off to the general public. they're coming out here to investigate this fire to try to determine whether this inferno was accidental or arson. the fire as you recall started around 4:30 this past friday morning. it grew to a four-alarm response to the oakland fire department as it destroyed this apartment complex that had been under construction. saturday evening, you've seen this video here, engineers brought down the large construction crane over the site and at risk of collapse. more than 700 people who have been evacuated from nearby apartments and houses were then allowed back into the homes.

however, 180 grand avenue is closed after glass and other material affected by the radiant heat falling from the building and also a house next to the fire site and another house with what looks like several units that only remain closed but the main 100 grand avenue i believe the address of the complex evacuated allowed back home. getting the construction crane down saturday evening was crucial because now that it's down it is safe for investigators from the atf and local oakland fire department to get into that site and sift through the area to find evidence, find out what caused that place to burn down. reporting live here in oakland, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. we will have much more on the fire online. go to the website for more video of the massive blaze that lit up the oakland skies with a slide show of the damage that happened as a result. also follows on twitter and updating story with new

states and russia, not getting a lot of support here on capitol hill for that. but first, this meeting with donald trump jr. and a russian lawyer. we could find out today if investigators investigating russia and ties to the trump campaign and the trump transition have any interest in that meeting. the trump team is down playing a "the new york times" report of a recently disclosed meeting between the president's son don jr., his son-in-law jared kushner, paul manafort and a russian lawyer after she promised damaging information on hillary clinton and the democrats. trump jr. claims she really wanted to talk about a russian adoption program. he says, quote, her statements were vague, ambiguous and made no sense. it quickly became clear that she had no meaningful information. the president's legal team adds, the president was not aware and did not attend the meeting. >> tremendous meeting yesterday.

firefighters arriving to find a fire in a planter just outside the house. the damage was limited to just the surrounding landscaping. it's believed that that fire started from fireworks. in the meantime, we are learning more about san jose's efforts to crack down on illegal fireworks. reportedly, it is not stopping the problem completely. this year the city boosted the prevention efforts with fines to $1,000 for repeat offenders. well, there are no hard numbers yet, "the mercury news" reports there were hundreds of complaints, 500 complaints on july 4th alone. honoring a fallen officer. state lawmakers are reportedly closer to renaming a stretch of 680 after a fallen bart officer. a bill is winding the way through the legislature to rename part of the road for bart police sergeant tommy smith, he was killed by a fellow officer in 2014 serving a warrant in

dublin. east bay times reports the state senate committee tomorrow is expected to send the measure to a full senate vote. assembly members already approved the measure. today we could learn new details about a sex scandal that continues to impact the oakland police department. a federal judge has now summoned lawyers for the city of oakland to court today to review a report about that scandal. the report found fault with the mayor and former police chief and other top officials that were linked to this investigation. the group of civil rights lawyers right now urging the judge to hold the city and police officials in contempt of court which would mean fines for the city of oakland. developing this morning, a live look at the san jose police department where authorities are on the hunt for a woman that stabbed and killed a man yesterday morning on 2nd street near downtown san jose. officers called in about 10:00 in the morning.

neighbors said they saw an angry woman throwing something through the window. neighbors say the area is increasingly unsafe. >> hookers, criminals, things like that. shooting. it's too many. all around here like a mile around. two miles. that's a lot of criminal. >> police have not identified the man killed and are not providing details on the woman they're looking for. on your monday, sad news out of the north bay this morning where we have learned that a teenager died after drowning in the russian river. it happened about 4:30 yesterday afternoon. sonoma county sheriff's deputies said they got a call of a man under the water. after an exhaustive search, a man was found. he was pronounced dead shortly after that. a full investigation under way into the death. 5:08. the north marin water district will have to drain nearly

5:13 right now on the monday. uc berkeley police are looking for a man that groped a woman on campus friday night. that woman who is not a student was in a campus parking lot when the man approached her. police say suspect grabbed her underneath her shorts. the man ran away after the victim screamed. police say that the victim was not physically hurt. another criminal investigation on campus right now as berkeley police are looking for a group of people who attacked a man. this also happened on friday night. police say the victim noticed a group while on bart and then followed and attacked at springer gateway. the victim was beaten and robbed and police say he suffered minor injuries as a result. call police in berkeley with information. 5:14. several penn state fraternity members face a judge today on charges of the death of a pledge. the beta theta pi fraternity

kari, tell us as we move forward into the week, really nice day to start. >> yeah. it is nice to start. >> there's a but coming. >> because it's so hot. it is still going to be hot today. we are going to see the temperatures warming up as we go through the rest of the week, especially for the valleys. this is where you want to hang out. san francisco, keeps it nice, cool weather. you can see the low clouds rolling by right now. that's been the saving grace. getting a look at the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, look at how hot it will be this weekend. it is really heating up and in spots like san jose starting out with the sun rise, we see that sun allowing the temperatures to shoot up very quickly by this afternoon. and this is where we're headed up to 88 degrees in gill roy. morgan hill, 92 degrees. cupertino at 87 degrees. oakland 71. 91 in antioch and liver more 92 degrees. some upper 70s for palo alto and

live report, the medical challenger just drove off with the body of the person who was shot and killed in this area. and as you mentioned, we are just feet away from the 24th and mission bart location. here on 24th and mission where the homicide took place and the video a much more active scene just a fews ago. now, according to san francisco police, they're saying the shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. they got a call for a shooting call in the area and they found a male victim dead from an apparent gunshot wound. as i mentioned, where this took place in front of this bar, it closes at about 3:00 a.m. let's go ahead an bring you back out live to police are still monitoring this scene and it could clear out soon as the medical examiner just left. there are noes at this time and then we don't know exactly what the motive may have been. of course, if you have any information to help out this

hit speeds of 100 miles per hour as it ran through the streets here in oakland and other parts of the east bay. oakland police tells us they started chasing this at around 9:30 or 10:00 last night. opd and chp were involved trying to catch this person. the pursuit led officers to market and west grand here in the downtown area. northbound 880. at marina and san leandro before law enforcement was able to stop the suspect at around 11:00, 11:30 in west oakland. hear that commotion. that's a crowd of people cheering as officers took this driver into custody. not clear why officers initial r initiated this chase in the first place.

at one point woke waicing up to find the head in the jaws of a black bear. >> yesterday morning, when the man says he woke up to a crunching sound. it was his own skull in the mouth of a bear! the bear was trying to drag him from the sleeping bag camping outside boulder. >> i thought i was dreaming for a second and then i was like this wasn't a dream. it hurts too bad to be a dream. >> the teenager punched and hit the bear and campers yelled and screamed. the bear dragged him about 12 feet and left. doctors placed nine staples in the man's skull but he is supposed to fully recover. >> wow. pretty cool customer there. boat earls warned to keep a safe distance as more and more whales spotted in the san francisco bay. if you have seen one or two of them, if you are lucky enough or a few of the humpbacks out of the water underneath the golden gate bridge, it is called breaching doing that. the marin ij reports a large number of whales deeper into the bay following their primary food

today and that's actually cooler than it was over the weekend. so i guess we'll take it. it will be up to 90 degrees in concord, livermore and oakland looking at a high of 71 degrees. looking out the window, getting ready for the day, a great day for something light colored, something short sleeved, of course. maybe a pool day and try to find something to cool off from the high temperatures valleys in the 90s an wine country today in sonoma valley, at 60 degrees this start out this morning and for noon, 78 degrees and not bad reaching into the mid-80s today and for some of the hiking trails along the peninsula, a nice play for activity in as the high temperatures only reach into the upper 50s and low 60s today. and some slow clearing. one thing to be watching going through the week is hurricane eugene. this is now a category 2.
