good morning. thank you for joining us on this monday. >> hope you had a fantastic weekend. now we have to get through monday. >> yes, we do. it is another hot one. we have the hot weather over the weekend. no major changes today except we bring some of those temperatures down a few more degrees, of course, is great news as you get ready to head out the door and still going to be hot. take a look at the temperatures. right side of the screen, looking live in pleasanton, up to 92 and east bay looking live at fremont at 74. that will be the high today and 65 in san francisco. we'll take a look ahead to hotter temperatures anding up in about seven minutes and vianey on the roadways right now. >> looking decent and the bridges filling up with traffic. right now speed sensors are picking up a little of slowing on the fremont area and some parts of the north bay and looks

like overall those minor fender benders early on have successfully cleared to the side and take a quick check. westbound 580 towards the richmond bridge seven minutes. westbound 80 towards the bay bridge 14 minutes and westbound 92 towards the san matteo bridge about 12 minutes. take a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. we are seeing major bakeckup alg that bridge. >> thank you, vianey. 6:01. developing in the east bay this morning, federal investigators are expected to arrive at the scene of this massive construction site fire in oakland later today. >> we brought you live breaking news coverage of the fire when it first started last friday morning. bob redell was one of the first reporters at the scene and joins us live again there this morning on the investigation. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and sam. a number of hours from now, the federal but owe of alcohol,

tobacco and firearms will send out a team here at 24th and valdez in downtown oakland. the idea, of course, to investigate this fire to try to determine whether it was set intentionally or an accident. it grew to a four-alarm response from the oakland fire department destroying this apartment complex that was under construction. saturday evening, engineers brought down the large construction crane that was damaged by the fire and at risk of collapse. most of the 700 people that are evacuated from nearby apartments and houses were then allowed back in the homes. however, 180 grand avenue, an address nearby, does remain closed after glass and other material affected by the radiant heat to fall down from the building and also a house next door to the fire site and another house with what looks like several you knitunits, tho locations remain closed.

the posting does not mention last friday's massive construction site fire that we have shown you this morning in oakland. it is a busy time for firefighters in general. new this morning, firefighters managing to put out a small fire before it seriously damaged a house in san jose. this happened a little bit after 1:00 this morning on mt. hamilton road. see the firefighters there spraying the area. they found it in an a planter just outside of a house. the damage was limited to the surrounding landscaping. it's believed it might have started from fireworks. meantime, we are learning that san jose's efforts to crack down on illegal fireworks reportedly is not stopping the problem. certainly not completely. this year the city boosted the prevention efforts including hiking fines up to $1,000 for repeat offenders. while there are no hard numbers at this point, the mercury news reports that this morning san jose still received hundreds of complaints over the course of the month. that includes about 500 alone on july fourth. developing this morning, a

live look at the san jose police department where authorities are on the hunt for a woman who stabbed and killed a man early yesterday morning at a home on second street near downtown san jose. officers were called out 10:00 a.m. a neighbor told us last week they saw an age woman throwing something through the window of the same house where the stabbing occurred. other neighbors say the area is increasingly unsafe. >> the house on hookers, the house on criminals. things like that. shooting. too many. over here like -- a mile around, two miles, that's a lot of criminal. >> police have not identified the man killed and not providing deon the woman they're looking for. we could learn new details of a sex scandal that continues to shape and impact the oakland police department. federal judge summoned lawyers for the city of oakland to court today to review a report about the scandal. that report found fault with the

mayor and former police chief and other top officials who were linked to the investigation. a group of civil rights lawyers right now urging the judge to hold the city and police officials in contempt of court and could mean fines for the city. north marin water district has to drain a public water tank because vandals last friday breached a fence and two locks guarding that tank. alarm sent authorities to the scene quickly and no evidence of contamination. the water is being drained as a precaution. to washington, d.c. this morning. the president is back in the u.s. and tweeting. there's several tweets this morning. couple of them responding to the criticisms van ka trump is facing for sitting in for her father in the g20 summit in germany. he tweeted, quote, when i left the conference room for short meetings with japan and other countries, i asked her to hold seats, very standard. angela mr. agreed. we went on to say chelsea

clinton were asked to hold the seat for her mother, the fake news would say chelsea for president. >> trying to piece this together right now as this is happening right now, president trump's oldest son explaining why he met with russian lawyer during the presidential campaign. tracie potts with the trump team's response, pretty active morning so far. good morning. >> reporter: hi there. good morning. good morning, everyone. the kremlin this morning saying that they made no promises to work with president trump own cyber security, something that he's been talking about. but when it comes to this meeting, they're also saying that they didn't know anything about it. the trump team is down playing a "the new york times" report about a recently disclosed meeting between the president's son don jr., his son-in-law jared kushner, then campaign chair paul manafort and russian lawyer last summer after she promised damaging information on

hillary clinton and the democrats. trump jr. claims she really wanted to talk about a russian adoption program. he says, quote, her statements were vague, ambiguous and made no sense. it quickly became clear she had no meaningful information. the president's legal team adds, the was not aware and did not attend the meeting. >> tremendous meeting yesterday with president putin. >> reporter: the president tweets, i strongly pressed president putin twice about russian meddling in our elections. he vehemently denied it. now president trump says he wants to partner with putin to set up a cyber security unit to prevent election hacking. >> i am sure that vladimir putin could be of enormous assistance in that effort since he is doing the hacking. >> not the dumbest idea i've ever heard but it's pritty close. >> reporter: overnight the president responding, the fact that president putin and i discussed a cyber security unit doesn't mean i think it can

74 degrees at 10:00 so if you have to get some yard work done, going out for a run, make sure it's early. look at this afternoon. reaching 90 degrees by 3:00. we'll see more hot weather going towards the weekend. a look at that forecast at 6:19 it is taking mass transit and happy to report at this hour there are no major delays across any of the transits. become to you. >> that is good news, vianey. thank you very much. 6:14 right now on your monday. some sad news to bring you from the north bay this morning where a teenager has died after drowning in the russian river. happened about 4:30 yesterday afternoon. sonoma county sheriff's deputies said they got the call of a man underwater near the steel head beach regional. after an exhaustive search, a 19-year-old man of oakland found in a pool of water on the shore there. he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. a full investigation into his death right now is under way.

it is closely approaching 6:15. honoring a fallen officer, state lawmakers are reportedly getting closer to renaming a stretch of interstate 680 after fallen bart police officer, a bill now winding the way through the state legislature to rename part of the 680 in san ramon valley for bart police sergeant tommy smith. he was accidentally killed by a fellow officer in 2014 while serving a warrant in dublin. east bay times reports the state senate committee tomorrow expected to send the measure to a full senate vote. the assembly members already approved the measure. this morning, uc berkeley police officers are locking for the man that groped a woman on campus near cal. police say that the sexual battery happened just before 9:00 friday night and the woman assaulted was not a student but in a campus parking lot when a man approached her. police say the suspect grabbed the woman under the shorts and ran away. police say the victim was not

physically hurt. this all happens as another criminal investigation is going on on campus. berkeley police looking for a group of people who attacked a man. that happened on friday night, as well. police say the victim noticed that group while on bart and then he was followed an attacked at springer gateway. the victim was beaten and robbed. police say he suffered minor injuries. call berkeley police if you have any information. happening today, a tsa precheck temporary enrollment center opens as oakland international airport inside terminal 2. travelers are invited to sign up. breeze through security. tsa has more than 450 lanes for precheck travelers and over 160 u.s. airports. enrollment period ends in two weeks. amazon prime day kicks off tonight. there's 30 hours of deals starting at 6:00 our time. this is exclusively for prime members, pretty popular. also be an alexa exclusive deal for prime members with an echo device or fire tv or tablet.

let's take a look at the wide range in temperatures we'll see and the beautiful views around the bay area as you wake up. here's a live look outside from guerneville. after drizzling for a few minutes, tracking the fog along the coastline. all clear inland. looking at san jose and the seven-day forecast up at the bottom of the screen. you will see it's going to be another hot weekend so let's enjoy this little bit of a cool down we'll have. it will be in the mid-80s today for san jose. 92 in morgan hill and anywhere from 71 in oakland to 92 in livermore. the peninsula also keeps a cool coastal temperatures. half moon bay, 65 and 79 in palo alto and upper 50s for the marina and mission district at 66 today. 86 in napa and santa rosa a high of 91 degrees. might be a good day to head to somewhere nice and cool like

santa cruz. this morning with upper 50s there and then you can see those high temperatures reaching into the low 70s. so a little bit of a breeze. you will still need the wet suit. planning to go golfing in the tri-valley, it is going to be really hot there this afternoon so you want to make sure you head out early. even by lunchtime, some upper 70s there and heading into the upper 80s by later today. san francisco will see the highs of 60s throughout the week. more fog and drizzle tomorrow and then clear it all out for the weekend with the highs of mid to upper 70s and the valleys heating up to close to 100 degrees. up to 98 degrees on saturday. and, vianey, tracking slow downs in the east bay and san matteo bridge, right? >> that's right. we are seeing more trafficking up at this hour as we go until about 6:20 and now 6:30 usually picking up. morgan hill, we are seeing some slowing along northbound 101. chp not reported anything in the area and may be a fender bender

hopefully it's not too cool there. >> cool to see that on the live camera and cool temperatures to look at highs in san francisco up to 65 degrees. we have also had a little bit of drizzle. that's since cleared out. say it again tomorrow morning and then we'll see everything clearing out as temperatures warm up heading toward the end of the week. look at the valley temperatures. enjoy this little bit of a break now. it is really going to heat up again over the next several days. i'll have a look ahead to the weekend forecast in about seven minutes. vianey is tracking some slow downs especially in the east bay. >> unfortunately, it looks like it's starting to back even more and all due to a crash right now along southbound 880 at tennyson road and looks like the lane is blocked and see the heavy delays out of the east bay so ump unfortunately if that's your commute, take off now. we have seen delays at the bridges. metering lights have been on since 5:20 or so.

westbound 80 towards the bay bridge 18 minutes and westbound 92 towards the san mateo bridge 18 minutes. a live look right now along 880 in oakland, we can see in the area not bad of traffic heading up here. we definitely start seeing more slowing up there. back to you. >> all right. thank you very much. 6:31. following breaking news out of san francisco where police investigating a deadly early morning shooting. today in the bay pete suratos is in the mission district not far from a busy bart station to explain. what happened? >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you in the newses room. just north of the 24th and mission bart station where an early morning shooting took place and an investigation is taking place. you have the police tape up. show you some scene video when it was a much more active scene this morning on 24th and mission. according to sfpd approximately 2:30 a.m. they responded to a

shooting call in of this bar. what they found was a male victim dead in from an apparent gunshot wound. we know that this place where the shooting took place, closes at 3:00 a.m. and the shooting took place just before closing time. as you can see here, the tape is still up in front of the area where this shooting took place an at that time no arrests have been made an we still don't know exactly the motive behind the shooting and if you have any information to help out with this case, contact sfpd. in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you so much, pete. also new this morning, not far from the scene of that homicide investigation, damage to a san francisco police cruiser. take a closer look there. this video just in to the newsroom. vandals throwing what appears to be a bathroom sink through the back window of the cruiser at 24th and mission. it's not clear at this point if the incident is connected to that nearby activity of the homicide investigation pete just showed us.

all new this morning, a wild high-speed chase as you can see from that video. night in the east bay. that was the scene in oakland where a man led law enforcement on a lengthy high-speed chase. >> bob redell is live in oakland to explain how it all came to an end even with applause, bob. >> reporter: oddly enough, good morning to you, laura and sam. that chase lasted around 90 minutes last night, hit speeds of 100 miles per hour here on streets of oakland and other parts of the east bay. opd tells you they started to chase this man, a driver at around 9:30 or 10:00 last night both opd and chp were involved in trying to catch this person. the pursuit led officers on market and west grand here in oakland. northbound 880 at marina and san leandro before law enforcement was finally able to stop the suspect around 11:00, 11:30 in

west oakland. and remarkably, that is the sound of an of people cheering as officers took the driver in  to custody. not clear why officers initiated this chase in the first place. reporting live here in oakland, bob redell, today in the bay. >> thank you, bob. 6:34. the parents a young man shot and killed while playing pokemon go in san francisco are still looking for information on their son's killer. and will announce a reward in the case this morning. 20-year-old calvin riley was killed near aquackic park last august. the baseball player going to high school in san mateo and playing college ball in stockton was playing pokemon go on his phone when someone quot him. now riley's parents are teaming up with a congresswoman to announce a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case. just hope for closure for

the family. developing across the state, firefighters stretched to the limit this morning because of this. battling close to 20 separate wildfires across the state an as you can see it spans all of california, geographically. now, those fires have also forced thousands of people from their homes in northern and southern california. mandatory evacuations remain in effect at this moment in butte county where the fire brned almost four square miles of land and destroyed at least 17 strucks. now 25% contained. an exodus of evacuees caused traffic jams. >> came through the mobile home park last night. on the bullhorn telling everybody to mandatory to leave. >> further south now, three fires in santa barbara counties are also still burning. and outdoor was destroyed in one of the fires. conditions are supposed to improve in the area over the

next few days. and it is not just people who are impacted by the fires. an equine rescue center near the fire in butte county spent several days evacuating 78 horses. many abused an abandoned and can be difficult to get them to cooperate. the owner of that rescue center has been sleeping on an air mattress outside and near the animals because she doesn't want to use donations to the center to pay for a hotel room. >> my job is to protect them. and the fire, i've never gone through anything like this. it is just -- i can't imagine them with not being saved. >> as of yesterday, 15 horses were still at that rescue center. 6:36 right now. crews will soon begin work on a sinkhole. you may recall it opened more than a year ago. public works said red tape held up the work until now. are pairs are set to begin next week. the people who live in the area

aren't exact thrilled because that means more road closures, detours and delays. >> it was a hassle. you know? you don't know where you're going. they block it off and then you go, okay, what do i do now? you end up going through here an then you can't get out once you get in and go all the way around. >> at least ten to 15 more minutes if not more. rely heavily on my gps. >> it's a popular route. the work is expected to stretch in october. well, last week we brought you a story treats to help dogs stay calm in stressful situations such as fireworks. in that story, we erroneously implied that several treats by holistic hound in berkeley are the equivalent of marijuana for dogs. that's incorrect. it's industrial hemp and do not contain the properties found in marijuana. we regret the error. new at 6:37 and unfortunately chp issued a sig alert for parts of the east bay

and it looks like we have starting to see that backup, that crash along southbound 880. lanes are blocked and as of now no estimated time as to when it's cleared an you can see the backup is already definitely causing some headaches out on the roads. unfortunately, chp right now reported possible injuries in the crash and avoid the area. a sig alert has been issued at this hour. and a quick check right now of the drive times in the east bay an delays in the area southbound 880 from 348 to highway 4. a 22-minute delay and a live look in san jose and also seeing some slow also due to an additional crash as of right now, looks like that crash has been cleared off to the right-hand shoulder an may start to pick up and right now in san jose, also seeing bumper to bumper traffic. welcome to monday. >> yes. it is. sometimes hard to get motivated on a monday and looking forward to next weekend always seems to

do the trick. >> i think so. we are looking ahead to the week. hot again today. pretty much like we had over this past weekend and then look at this weekend's forecast. 98 degrees inland. you might want to head to somewhere like you're seeing in the background. moon bay. it is nice and much cooler. 75 degrees. the bay on sunday will be in the upper 80s so even those areas will be heating up and then for the inland valleys, up to 97 degrees so more sunshine and a wide range in temperatures. in napa valley on friday, we are up to 89 degrees and then 97 on saturday. sunday, not much better. 94 degrees. so if you want to head somewhere cooler like santa cruz, we will have some low 70s all weekend long. some breezy winds and some very nice temperatures. and then if you're making a road trip heading down to l.a. it will be in the upper 70s to low 80s with a lot of sunshine. we'll bring you back home and take a look at today's temperature trend for willow

but already looks hot and hazy with a live look outside in san jose right now. 6:43. it is still nice and comfortable as of now. but our temperatures quickly warm up today. we are heading nearby to willow glen where already at lunchtime in the low 80s an then reaching into the mid-80s this afternoon. we're going to see more hot weather like this above average temperatures and then some 90s for the weekend. we'll take a look at that coming up at 6:49.

>> continuing to follow the sig alert for the east bay. 880 right before cutter road. seeing major delays out of that area. please go ahead and leave now if this is your early morning commute. later today, federal investigators are set to start work at the site of a burned out oakland building looking for the cause. you're looking right now at live pictures of what was once an apartment complex under construction. first brought you the four-alarm fire friday morning as breaking news and since then most of the 700 people forced to evacuate have been allowed to return but in a neighboring building still closed after glass and debris started to fall last night. new this morning, firefighters did manage to put out a small fire in san jose before it seriously damaged a home there. this happened after 1:00 this morning on mt. hamilton road. firefighters arrived there to find the fire in a planter outside the home.

they were able to limit the damage to just the landscaping. that fire's believed to have started from fireworks. richmond leaders this week ramp up discussions to annex north richmond which is mostly within richmond's bound ris. close to 4,000 people live there. for years there's talk about bringing the two-square-mile neighborhood into richmond's fold. tomorrow they receive the results of a feasibility study. san francisco, the city where jerry garcia grew up, is soon reportedly having a new plaque honoring the grateful dead founder. last year city leaders helped to install the first plaque in the city. well, now the examiner is reporting a second sidewalk plaque is going to be installed a few blocks away know another house where garcia once lived and mission and amazon. that plaque is expected to be installed by the end of next month. senate majority leader mcconnell is working to scrape

up to 86. palo alto, 79 degrees so you're getting ready for the day, another great day for wearing something lightweight, light colored, breathable to keep you cool and a great beach day to head on out the door and find the nearest pool. it will be hot in the tri-valley an this is where you're going golfing today, you want to make sure you're heading out early. we start out at 66 degrees at 9:00. and then already by noontime at 78 degrees and then temperatures continue to go up from there. into up thor 80s by early afternoon and the temperatures ramping up quickly. somewhere nice and cool along the peninsula and the spotlight, half moon bay, we will have some patchy fog to start but it stays cool throughout the day with highs reaching into the upper 50s the lower 60s. and as we take a live look outside in heavenly for the first time i'm actually able to see the dirt there so the snow continues to melt.

and it's still beautiful there with some comfortable temperatures reaching into the low 80s and mostly sunny skies over the next few days. lucky you having plans to head to the sierra. we are going to have temperatures heating up here. look at the weekend forecast. san francisco after a week in the mid-60s, we'll head into the upper 70s by sunday. and for the inland valleys, up to 98 degrees on saturday. it is going to be ramping up fairly quickly after a little bit of a break on wednesday. heading over to vianey, you said the east bay is really a mess. >> east bay, unfortunately, is definitely going through it at that hour. seeing not one or two but three accidents along 880 and chp issued a sig alert 20, 30 minutes ago for a crash along southbound 880 right before dakota. lanes are blocked in the area. went from one lane blocked to possibly three lanes blocked and slowing along the northbound to

6:56 on the monday morning. before you head out the door, top stories we're working on today. >> we start right now with breaking news in san francisco's mission district where a person was shot and killed overnight. you see the crime scene tape there. active scene this morning. that shooting at 2:30 near 24th and mission right steps away from the bart station. police say the victim died at the scene. so far there are no arrests or any suspect information. new this morning, a dramatic high-speed chase through city streets and highways in oakland. cameras rolling as the driver went through streets at 100 miles per hour. it all started about 10:00 last night. lasted for about 90 minutes. oakland police and chp officers

chased that driver and ended in west oakland where a crowd of people watched officers arrest that driver. they actually started cheering as the suspect was taken into custody. live to the san jose police department this morning where police are still looking for a woman who stabbed and killed a man. it happened yesterday morning at a home on second street near downtown san jose. a neighbor said they had seen an angry woman throwing something out of a window of the same house last week. police have not identified the man killed a enl not releasing a description of the woman they're looking for. later today, we could learn some new details of a sex scandal that continues to shape policy and impact the oakland police department. a federal judge summoned lawyers of the city of oakland to court today for a report of the scandal and found fault with the mayor, former police chief and other top officials linked to the investigation. a group of civil rights lawyers is urging the judge to hold the
