overnight destroy several breaking news, downtown damage, massive flames in the east bay overnight. destroyed several buildings in downtown laugh yet. we're live with a closer look at the aftermath. good morning to you and thanks for joining us on this busy thursday morning. >> we are going to get to that in just one second, but let's start right now with a check of your forecast, and kari hall good morning. >> good morning. as we get a look at what's happening out there around the bay area, mostly clear skies to start as you get ready to head out the door. we're seeing the mist and drizzle roll across the dpolden gate bridge right now. low vieblts in spots with our high temperatures inland today reaching into the mid to upper 80s for the south bay, low 90s for the tri-valley and oakland

73 degrees there. 70 degrees in medical mont, san francisco will see the temperatures range anywhere from 58 to 68 degrees into mid-80s for much of the north bay. we'll take a closer look at this and temperatures ramping up toward the weekend in a few minutes. mike takes us out there this morning with a early commute. we have an issue that may be a problem for drivers if you exit northbound 280 at steven creek boulevard. reports of an earlier crash stand sounds like all the crash activity has cleared but there's damage to the guardrail. >> i think they're going to hold off on that repair work until late tonight, but we'll follow this. no problems as far as travel times getting over toward the bay bridge but just off hey way 24 i know you got that breaking news because it may be visible from the freeway. that's a good point. this is what it looked like overnight. massive flames in downtown laugh yet leave behind a path of destruction. >> several building are destroyed including the chamberg

of commerce. what you can tell ugs so far, bob, about what happened out there? >> good morning. i just spoke with contra costa fire, they're the fire department that handles laugh yet and they tell us that it's too early to tell what caused this fire right here. if you plook up you can see they've got a ladder that's been dumping a lot of water ornt scene here even though the fire is out. they're still dumping water because they want to make sure that nothing flares back up. you're looking at the remains of 100 laugh fee yet circle in the was an older said the of buildings that how's a number of businesses, restaurants, hair salon, a cpa, the laugh fee yet chamber of commerce. i want you to take a look at the video and you can get a sense of what the fire department was facing around midnight last night. one person tells us the flames were shooting up 100 feet in the

air. they said when he they arrived the two building were consuld and they had to good on the defensive and fight this from the outside. if n other words they didn't have a chance to make an interior attack. they did have to call for three alarms, so that meant a lot of units out here to but the this fire out. they did keep it contained to this address, but there's an apartment complex nearby and we understand that the police department had to go there to wake those people up just as a precaution because the fire was so close. >> it was very reassuring at how quickly everybody kind of like took charge. and the people from the apartment started banging on doors, everybody had like a great community action and they got everybody out. >> reporter: the fire department estimates the damage is just over a million dollars or around

home the high speed terminal is under construction right next to the any sales force tower, but it needs money and sales force is willing to provide that. the tech company says it's willing to pay more than $110 million for naming rights for the next 25 years. richmond leaders today are going to be holding the first of several meetings to get feedback from folks on a plan to annex north richmond. that calls for them to bring unincorporated north richmond into its jurisdiction. this week they received the results of a fees ability study. four meetings are now planned between now and dept september. new this morning the summer's toxic algae bloom is apparently making its presence felt in discovery bay. health inspectors say water samples detected blue-degree algae. it is make people extremely sick at higher levels and harmful to dogs that roam into contaminated areas. signs are being posted.

hitting the snooze button you're going want to see this incredible video. it's a kite surfer out on the san francisco bay. he actually goes right over a whale. we'll see it again. yeah, you can see the actual whale breaching the kite sur sfer actually making contact there. isn't it incredible? the video was recently released but it happened last month. he says the whole thing was actually pretty terrifying. >> there's something huge around you. he was going back and coming back and as he was approaching me i was getting more and more scared, you know. he didn't just come out, but he came up with the rolling and trying scare me or something. >> oh, my. that say whale of a tale. this is another tale. it happened under the golden gate bridge, whales are coming into the bay to feed. they're coming cloets to one however is illegal and can come with a $10,000 fine.

>> that is absolutely amazing. happening now at 4:40, several wildfires continue to burn across the state of california this morning. this is a look at all of the fires, the cal fire is currently working on. they're outlined in red. those gray boxes show you the ones that are 100% contained. fortunately crews starting to get a handle on two of the big eftd. one is wall fire that stands at about 6,000 acres burned but it is up to 70% containment. all evacuation orders have been lifted. in the meantime the alamo fire to our south near santa maria has not grown much in the last 24 hours if the is also at 70% containment. warm weather continues today, right, care rhee? >> it will and it ramps up for the weekend so we're enjoying today look at at the temperature trend and it will be up to 86

in the chp report. northbound highway 29 reports of an overturned big rig. >> i don't have any word of any injuries but this will affect a narrow area here, highway 29 both directions affected by this crash because of spectators. we will track this through napa. not a big issue for most of our commuters but an issue for that part of the north bay. over here toward lafayette, this is what bob red dell was talking about that fire. you saw the crews dumping the water on to the structures over there including the chamber of commerce just off of lafayette circle. the circle itself is closed that's the perimeter of that commercial area. but mount diablo boulevard and rozza road are both open for traffic and as the flames have died down there's not been much of a problem. it's just south of highway 24. we're also hooking at your travel times over toward the bay bridge and a nice easy travel time as well. light traffic flow but i do want

to show what you highway four is where we'll see the first bill for the traffic and thee easy routes, so ten minutes better on that purple route here than it is comingal wait over on highway four, but that may change if there's any other issues. again highway 24 is no major problem. bottom of your screen, nbc bay area, that's the team that i want you to join. one popular member of our team both on waze and studio. carrie, whaez how's are the forecast. >> the it's 54 degrees and now we're seeing some temperatures at 59 degrees in palo alto, 57? oakland, and it's 63 degrees in fairfield. already a fairly mild start to the day and as we head into this afternoon we're going to see those temperatures heating up to 88 degrees in the south bay and as we get a look. seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, you'll see how those temperatures heat up for the weekend and then start to come back down early next week.

we're up to 90 in the tri-valley today and 65 degrees with some clearing later today in san francisco and 90 in the north bay. so as you're looking out the window and starting out the day in the closet getting ready for what will be a very warm day but not as hot as it will be, but you'll be comfortable with some short sleeves and some shorts today and don't forget the sun glasses because we will have some bright sunshine throughout the day. if it's a day where you can go to some of the east bay parks or hiking trails, we will have a cool morning at 60 degrees at 7:00 and 73 degrees at 10:00 and after that it gets a little more uncomfortable as our temperatures quickly warm. we'll be up to 88 degrees gi by 2:00 and with that westerly twind comes back down. over the next few days it will go from the mid-80s to the mid-90s by saturday, so you can see how hot it will be. and looking at san francisco in the temperature trend for the next several days, we'll be in the mid-60s for today and tomorrow and then the weekend

welcome back right now live look from our nation's capital as the depay the over healthcare heats up later today. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell plans to present a revamped version of the healthcare bill but many members are already complaining about it. that new plan still rolls back much of the architecture of the president obama's healthcare law like the penalties that would have been required for people who don't by coverage and healthcare subsidies will be less again tlus time around. senator mcconnell is pushing for support out of a do or die vote which he is encouraging for next week. new this morning, san francisco federal judge says he is not likely to throw out a lawsuit that blocks president trump's executive order that cuts funding from sanctuary decides at as we've been telling you a lautd by san francisco and santa clara county is what blocked that order back in april the the trump administration argued yesterday that since the scope of the order has been limited, less money will be withheld. the judge said that's not

brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's get straight to the forecast right now. enjoy the cooler temperatures today. we will have temperatures ramping up as we head e head into the weekend and we're going to have a few clouds and fog this morning in san francisco and along the coastline and temperatures reaching into the mid-60s. a little bit warmer tomorrow with a lot more sunshine and bright sunshine for the weekend making it into the mid-70s there while the inland areas will be up to 101 degrees. some dangerous heat on the way and a high fire danger. i'll talk more about that and looking out at a closer look at the weekend coming up. mike takes us out there on the roadways track a few issues. you're looking pretty good overall. we see these centers it's very early. we have a couple of issues. we have that krash told you about highway 20 at tower near the airport. this other one is in the north bay, southbound 101. i saw a lot of slowing. it's actually not a crash, it's a car fire and that was reported there in the area. it looks like they may have the distraction gone because the slowing has just started to clea
