the end of the week. that's why you get an extra cup of coffee. >> you will need that today and by tomorrow we'll be talking about iced coffee because it's so hot. at least today we can enjoy some mild weather. it is 62 degrees. half moon bay and 92 degrees in livermore. napa today, 85. and heat advisories kick in tomorrow for all of those areas shaded in red that includes santa cruz mountains, much of the east bay and south bay hills with a fire danger and talking about how hot the temperatures get in a few minutes. mike is now tracking a closure in oak listened. >> that's my advisory right now. nimitz is closed over through downtown oakland and tracking this crash in sarahtoga. one lane is closed southbound 85. all lanes are closed here at 23rd. folks off roadway and then back on. there's an interchange and causing quite a backup and starting back at 980. do you see the traffic volume building a bit?

this is just as they should be reopening lanes as we speak. i keep refreshing that chp and cal transwebsite to make sure that's the case. no delays for these travel times. sam? >> thank you. a fatal scene yesterday in sonoma and just digging for answers the find out this plane crash, what happened here? the pilot died. three others are injured and the investigation begins now into what happened. bob redell joining us live from sonoma and information we're just learning this morning. bob? >> reporter: good morning to you, sam. on board that plane was the pilot, his two young children and an adult woman. when they took off from sonoma skypark early yesterday afternoon their plane sadly was almost immediately in distress. one witness we spoke with said that the small single engine sr-22 ascended to around 75 feet, the engine sputtered and cut out twice before then the plane crashed in a field about

1,000 feet from this airport. now, you can see in the video, the pilot did deploy an emergency parachute attached to the plane to slow the descent. a number of people who witnessed the crash ran to the site and tried to help the family. >> when i got there, there was a little hand out of the back window so i thought, oh my gosh, somebody's alive in there. let's see what we can do. >> reporter: the good samaritans pried the boy and girl out of the plane. both air lifted and treated at oakland hospital. the woman was badly hurt. the father, however, did not survive the crash. the sonoma county sheriff's office identified him as bill goldman, a 38-year-old assistant professor at usf. the university issued a statement of condolences and prayers for his wife sarah and children george and marie. that's reporting that goldman grandson of late two fell known

philanthropists there. they don't know if it's pilot error, mechanical problem or something else. bob redell, today in the bay. >> thank you. today the murder trial for the undocumented immigrant charged with shooting and killing kate steinly will begin. he said he found a stolen gun and it accidentally went off asia hit steinle in san francisco two years ago. the shooting made national headlines, even prompting a bill of kate's law which passed in the house last month. the bill would extend prison stays for undocumented immigrants caught reentering the u.s. after being deported multiple times. president trump in paris this morning celebrating a trio of historic anniversaries and while hinting at the flexibility on climate change, the president's biggest political problem is following him across

the atlantic. >> we are learning new information this morning on a controversial meeting his son had with a russian lawyer in a nbc exclusive, we now know another person was in that meeting. today in the bay's tracie potts joins us with what this all means. good morning. >> reporter: laura and sam, good morning. that other person confirmed to nbc is a soviet-born former counterintelligence officer who's now -- of russia and the united states and has operated as a lobbyist for russian causes. now confirmed by donald j. trump jr.'s attorney saying that he was not operating as a lobbyist at the time. and was a friend of a person who helped set up the meeting. however, it seems to be raising more questions about people with russian ties very close to the trump campaign.

somehow it was okay because they didn't actually obtain any useful information in it. >> reporter: congress is consumed with russia. >> it is grinding the country to a halt. >> reporter: putting other important business on hold. tracie potts, nbc news. breaking news out of israel, israeli police say two officers were killed in an attack by terrorists whom they have identified as palestinians. this happened near a major shrine in israel, the dome of the rock. jerusalem's old city. police say three attackers used a knife and guns to attack opening fire on three officers. the attackers were then shot and killed a short time later in a foot race with israeli police. a third officer is in the hospital. new details this morning following lengthy debate yesterday. san francisco's planning commission reportedly approved a controversial plan for a marijuana dispensary in the outer sunset. not everyone is on board with the plan calling for combined

pot club an chinese medicine clinic. the group running it is headed in part by former oakland mayor. hundreds of opponents reportedly tried to address the commission at yesterday's meeting. it followed protests earlier in the day outside city hall. the examiner reports planners approved the project 5-1. some more details now on that illegal skateboarding event that turned into a standoff between skate borders and san francisco police officers. skater and thrasher magazine editor was injured while taking part in the unpermitted event. phelps said he was racing and lost control and he took a nasty fall. >> i whacked my head pretty good. i don't know what a concussion is. i don't feel like i can't figure out what i'm doing. i did it. i did it really fast and then the second time i hit a -- a

reflector in the middle of the street and pitched my wheels sideways and i just flew. >> when police officers moved in to try to help, that's when things got out of control. another skater and officer were injured. you can see it as an officer tried to stop the skaters. the incident is under investigation by the department. phelps says that making the event legal would have avoided these problems. we continue to dig for answers in yesterday morning's destructive fire in downtown lafayette. we brought you live breaking coverage yesterday. this morning, the question is was it arson or just a very unfortunate incident. it ripped through multiple businesses including the chamber of commerce and housed a nail salon and a restaurant. city loaders are calling the fire one of the worst in lafayette's history. good friday morning. we are coming up on 5:08. if you can get the weekend started early and head to santa

cruz today, it is nice and cool. at least to start out in the morning as we will be in the mid to upper 50s and then late morning lunchtime 63 degrees. some low 70s there today and then if you want to head to napa valley and enjoy the sunshine, and some warmer temperatures, we will have a nice cool start. we'll be at 61 degrees noontime temperature 78 and 85 later today. we're going to have some very hot weather this weekend. temperatures ramp up quickly. i'll talk about that. mike starts us out with a crash in sarahtoga. >> the croatia and the big delay in oakland, as well. first southbound 85 just passed sarahtoga with a crash reportedly blocking the slow lane. fie or six cruisers arrived and cleared up. now they seem to be more worried about a wrecker than an ambulance. the concern is more clearing the lane and not showing a lot of slowing but the injuries still an issue as far as the question marks around that area.

it's friday. here's a look at the sun vise this morning. getting under way as we take a live look outside in san jose a. few clouds in the sky. going nearby to los gatos and the temperature trend in the upper 60s latter on this morning. and then we are in for some upper 80s today. this is nothing compared to the heat that's on the way for the weekend. i'll have a look at that at 5:18. notice i have changed that sign from red to blue. we still have road work but i got confirmation to open at least two lanes. that's better for the nimitz. >> thank you very much, kari and mike. a warning about the video in

this next story. might make you queasy. but drivers on one oregon highway had no choice but to check out this scene. a truck carrying about 4 tons of live'lls overturned on highway 101 yesterday afternoon. it happened when the driver slammed on the brakes and those containers just went flying. it also triggered a four-car crash. no one was injured but these'lls secret a substance when they're stressed and the highway had to be closed for several hours. and i'm told samuel l. yak son was nowhere to be told. that reference to "snakes on a plane." >> the'lls that lock like snakes to your point, we are going to korea. they're a specialty there. how would you like to be the consumer? >> i don't want to be in the box here looking at them. >> absolutely disgusting. south bay package thieves have more than they bargained

tarring a san jose home on wednesday. that's because the woman at the house drove up just as they were carrying out their theft with the home security camera capturing the entire thing. see the woman running into the car. she tosses the box into the car and the homeowner heidi burrows drives a car up to the culprit's car. they're squaring off face to face there. burrows said she meant to take a photo for police. instead she starts to shout at the man and woman inside of the car as the box came flying out of the back window. >> it's funny because i had three boxes of boxes on the porch and as i was driving up, i rolled down my window and i heard them yell, get the biggest box. >> wow. well, i don't think they got away with it. the contents of the back just packaging supplies. police did not file a report because the parcel was tossed back and issued a be on the lookout alert for that car. a los angeles activist is admitting to sending out a flier

hayward -- and 76 in san mateo. engle side at 62 degrees and 86 in thnovato. little bit cooler along the coast. speaks of the coast, going to be heading inland or away from the coast, that's where temperatures will be hottest in the tri-valley today, we are going to be starting out this morning going golfing at 67 degrees at 9:00 and then temperatures quickly get very hot reaching into the low 90s and for the peninsula, highing, heading to the hiking trails it will be foggy to start. cool temperatures and then becoming mostly sunny. the highs only in the low 60s. want to give you an update on hurricane fernando out in the pacific and not expected to affect land and may strength on the a category 4 and could be something making head loins and here we are talking about the heat on the way while san francisco will be in the mid-70s this weekend. inland areas will have some

police officers since we first heard of the shooting. officers tell us they heard a victim suffering from a gunshot wound and taken to the hospital. no word yet on his condition. no one is in custody and right now officers tell us they are canvassing the scene trying to figure out what happened. there you go. can you hear me now? paying more for the morning commute. a live look at san mateo and richmond san rafael. >> this after state lawmakers moved a step closer to a ballot measure for next year. chris sanchez is joining us live this morning with where the money would go. good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning to you, sam and laura. that is proposed bridge toll hike to affect all bridges except for the golden gate bridge and it would fund all kinds of improvements, infrastructure from the highways to the bridges and also for mass transit and it is a unanimous yes in the transportation committee. they passed it unanimously yesterday in the state assembly.

so-called regional measure 3. the california state version is showing promise and if it makes it through goes on the ballot for june of next year. the proposal starts with a $1 hike that would raise $127 million a year. a $2 increase would generate $254 million a year. and then a $3 increase would raise $381 million a year for improvements. now, in a recent poll, 56 of voters said definitely or probably yes to that regional measure 3. 43% said probably or definitely no. that poll was about 3,000 likely voters. it was commissioned by the silicon valley leadership group and the bay area council, as well. here's how the president of the bay area council put it w. the funding of a regional toll increase to generate we can make improvements and investments to

boardwalk in santa cruz and when the fog lifts you won't be allowed to did into the water because as you mentioned shark sightings since tuesday led to numerous restrictions, including not going into the water until tomorrow. you can go to the beach anywhere in santa cruz but you can't go in the water from the mouth of the san lorenzo river on the south part of the area, that's where the giant dipper roller coaster you might be familiar with on the boardwalk all the way north to fair avenue. that's well passed steamer lane, the lighthouse and not quite to natural bridges state beach. >> i was going to surf steamers lane today. because the waves are a lot better, bigger. they have the beach closed down and we decided let's come here to jump in the water. >> reporter: yeah, captola, south of the boardwalk, that's fair game to go into the water. it's taken a bite out of business at the boardwalk an was

prompted by an incident tuesday at 11:00 a.m. when a kayaker roughly a quarter mile out to sea had a 10 to 12-foot shark take a bite out of his kevlar kayak. you could face not only sharks but also a citation if you go in the water. the kayaker by the way was not injured. reporting live in santa cruz, chuck coppola with today in the bay. >> chuck for us, thank you very much. police right now in concord say that they're working to try to figure out whether a man accused of molesting a little girl at a laundromat might have had other victims. 60-year-old jose chavez behind bars this morning. police said a woman called claiming he assaulted her grandmother on wednesday inside of the coin laundry on monument boulevard. police say video helped them to track down chavez. people we spoke with said it could be a lesson to other families. >> for the parents, they should be watching their kids no matter

what because you never know what will happen. >> police say that the suspect attacked girl in just a short amount of time her grandmother turned her back. 5:36 right now. our investigative unit uncovered a new report to confirm a close call at sfo was extremely close. we showed you this simulation yesterday. which shows an air canada jet almost landed on the taxiway filled with planes about to take off. instead of the runway right next to it. new preliminary data just released by the transportation safety board of canada said that plane flew 100 feet above a fully loaded passenger plane on the taxiway. the pilot likely knew he was heading toward the craft and veered to the side turning back into the air to avoid a crash. a couple of things to tell you about from yesterday's bart board of directors meeting held in san francisco. first, bart's new police chief is defending the department's

where you can go and cool down for a good cause will be san rafael where the temperatures outside will be in the upper 80s. head inside to the marn marin center and go to breast fest and drink cold beer. a nice event to attend and menlo summerfest this weekend. the low 60s on sunday. this event goes on both days saturday and sunday and wrap up the weekend here it will be in the mid-70s 4:00. if you're hitting the road, maybe head on the roads early this morning, and today the high temperature will be up to 76 degrees. 79 degrees tomorrow and 75 degrees on sunday. and also going to muir woods. it is going to be in the upper 60s today but then a little bit warmer for tomorrow and sunday but still some great hiking weather, especially in the shade. now, parts of the central valley will be very hot. of course, reaching over 100 degrees and probably what we are trying to avoid but it will be a

morning, 3 of 16 people killed in a military plane crash in mississippi this week were from california. within the past 20 minutes, the marine corps released names and photos of the victims. that includes captain sean eliot from orange in southern california and staff sergeant cox of ventura and sergeant chad general son of los angeles. they were on a military transport plane when it crashed into a field on monday. the cause is still under investigation. we have new details this morning about what might have led up to the killing of four young men in pennsylvania. according to the associated press, a person with firsthand knowledge of the suspect's confession says that cosmo dinardo killed the men because he felt cheated and threatened after three drug deals. here's dinardo's attorney after a court hearing on thursday. >> admitted to being part of or actually committing the murder. >> of all four? >> yes. >> and gave the locations for all four.

nation's capital this morning. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell is hard at work right now trying to secure votes for the revised health care bill. we brought you details yesterday on our 11:00 a.m. newscast as it was released. two republican senators said they will not vote for it. one of kentucky senator rand paul who says the bill is not conservative enough. while on the other end of the spectrum, maine senator susan collins said that the bill leaves too many people without health insurance. since the bill needs 50 gop senators to pass, mcconnell cannot afford to lose a single vote additionally. as it stands right now, six senator at least are on the fence over it. quick highlights of the bill, $45 billion added to fight opioid addiction and $70 billion for more cost sharing for states to lower premiums. it does keep deep cuts to medicaid. it also keeps intact two of the obamacare taxes on the well
