mike? >> good morning, laura. a tough morning here on the peninsula. we do want to show you as we see light traffic, you do have unusual slowing southbound 101 from about oyster point down to grant. that's one exit right there. the reason they have the traffic zoomed out further so i can show folks 280 to 380 is an option. there was a temporary full closure but again only two lanes blocked now. three have opened. because of the continuing changes pete suratos is on the scene moving around a bit to get a different shot and get more information. he's continuing to feed that to the newsroom. the traffic flow is slow right at the scene but it is starting to move once again from oyster point to grant avenue where a crash involving a pedestrian. we'll track this scene. ckari, you have the forecast fo today. >> we are going to have some slightly cooler temperature as we head throughout the morning. at least it starts out nice. we are at the 67 degrees in fair field and 62 in morgan hill.

san jose at 64 degrees as you get ready to head out the door and for today's high temperatures upper 90s in concord. 79 in oakland and san francisco today up to 72 degrees. it will be slightly cooler in some spots. as you can see it's still going to be well above average. temperatures continue to come down as we go throughout the week. more about that coming up in a few minutes, sam and laura. good to see relief there. 5:01. three juveniles are in custody after police say they tried to rob someone violently. police say the suspects tried to take someone's phone and then punch the victim after that person refused to cooperate. officers were able to catch up to the suspects on the platform and detain them. the three were taken to juvenile hall. a man has drowned had in coyote creek and morgan hill. it happened yesterday afternoon in a portion of the creek at the rv park between highway 101 and old monterey road. the victim was a man in his 30s.

authorities spent much of the night searching for him. they're still waiting to hear if they've actually recovered his body. that portion of the creek has very sharp currents. happening today long-awaited repairs are set to begin anytime now for that sinkhole that has caused traffic headaches for about a year and a half. a live look at the detours around center street just off miraga road. heavy storms in march of 2017 caused 130-foot sinkhole to form. it looks like in the light of day. costs of repair kept ballooning and it took time to nail down funding for it. repairs are expected to take more than two months to finish. at 5:02 the pros and cons of the san jose complex. this morning we are investigating the impact it'll have on the south bay. kris sanchez is live with a closer look at what could change when google moves in.

good morning, kris? >> reporter: if you live in the south bay you know it is hard to escape talk of google's supposed development here. it made the front page of the east bay times so really all of the bay area is talking about it. much of the plan involves area around the station where i am this morning so we'll see an impact to transportation. also because the city of san jose entered into exclusive rights to buy about -- or rather to sell about 250 acres of area to google this is really the part of downtown we're talking about that calls for about 8 million square feet of office space. to put that in perspective more than double google's main campus in mountain view and it's enough office space for 15,000 to 20,000 people eventually and with that kind of growth comes concern over traffic and housing and all kinds of other areas as well. the san jose city council is

grappling with how to welcome in a huge tenant into the downtown area without displacing folks who live and call san jose home. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> big changes coming. thank you, kris. nine people are recovering after a car crash in brentwood. chp says it was the result of a head-on collision between a driver and stolen car going the wrong way and a van with seven people inside of it and that included three children. that happened on westbound highway 4 and san creek road. helicopters had to come and transport some of the victims for care. a man was arrested on several felony charges. two people in the van remain in the hospital. berkeley police say they are searching for a suspect after a strong-armed robbery early s sunday morning at about 2:40 in the morning. they say a man robbed a woman and fled in a car.

the car may have been a ford taurus. new this morning san jose police are looking for a guy who shot a woman in san jose. it happened around midnight near winchester boulevard. several neighbors we spoke to heard the gunfire. we saw the cops and the streets were closed. >> the victim was treated for nonlife threatening injuries at the hospital. a program designed to help homeless people by allowing them to sleep in their cars is getting scaled back. starting today the safe parking program will be cut in half with fewer sites and spaces due to a cut in funding. three separate sites will operate down from eight. organizers say that should still be enough to satisfy demand. concerns about rising sea

levels are getting one city to take some action. engineers in belvedere are studying the cost and benefits of raising that city's two levees and stabilizing the surrounding earth around belvedere lagoon. the latest heat advisory is over but fire danger will likely remain elevated. they scrambled to save homes. one fire threatened ten homes and a nearby industrial park at brentwood. >> we did have some homes threatened on the west side of the fire. we have a new neighborhood built over there and some are in the framing phase. we took that seriously and sent one of our units there first to go protect the structures and make sure we didn't burn the new houses down.

>> it started as a car fire along highway four. in all about 20 acres burned. all of those homes were saved. we have some clear skies and a mild start. a live look outside in free he month and temperatures will go from the mid-60s later this morning to the upper 70s by noontime. high temperatures in the upper 80s. a look at all of our high temperatures, going to be very hot for spots like concord up to 98 degrees. in napa 96. we'll have mid-90s for morgan hill coming down from the triple digits yesterday. san jose 89 degrees and 72 today in san francisco. we'll take a look at the temperature trend for evergreen coming up in about four minutes. mike is talking about the stopped traffic on highway 101.

that shows up we've watched that clear. i will send it out to pete. pete, southbound 101. tell us what happened. >> reporter: good morning, mike. just before you get to grand avenue, traffic is moving better than when we first showed up early this morning. the traffic is moving along but just down the way just before you hit grand avenue that's where that fatal pedestrian accident took place. it's unknown at this time how that pedestrian got there but i'm being told by chp that the corridors are there as we speak so they're expecting this area to be cleared up in the next 30 minutes. so for folks traveling along grand avenue this area will be clearing momentarily or at least in the next 30 minutes. we do have chp units still here on the ground. as you take it back out here live chp working.

community members in welcome back. it's 5:25 on your monday. hundreds of families, friends, remembering the four missing men whose bodies were found late last week. a vigil was held yesterday. those men's bodies were found buried on a farm outside of philadelphia. police arrested two people, both of them are accused of shooting and killing four men. investigators say the victims had met with the suspects to buy large amounts of marijuana when they disappeared. this morning hollywood continues to mourn the loss of two hollywood greats, oscar winning actor martin landow died this weekend. best known for his role in the 1960s tv show "mission: impossible." the actor died yesterday of unexpected complications at ucla medical center. playing the master of disguise

5:00. it did not. we'll let you know about any other extended problems. expect slowing. here on the peninsula we have slowing as well at the scene of this deadly crash. some changes in the last few minutes. i will hand it off. pete, what do you have? >> reporter: good morning to you, mike. we just got the warning from chp they will be opening up this lane on 101 south behind me on grant avenue momentarily, probably in the next minute or so. as you can see already three of the five lanes are open following that fatal pedestrian accident in this area. we keep it live you can see chp still here where that accident took place. a coroner's van was here. they'll be clearing this area shortly. we're still working to get information on how that pedestrian got here in the first place. chp tells me this appears to be a male involved in this deadly pedestrian accident. working to get more information

on that. as far as the morning commute goes, three out of the five lanes are open. this area here will be opening up shortly so we'll be able to clear this area. i'll keep you up to date when it officially clears in a matter of moment. pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> at 5:32 this morning, new shocking reports. the bay area news group uncovered what experts are calling a huge failure when it comes to building inspections in oakland. more than 200 buildings which house thousands of people were never ex inspected after firefighters flagged big fire dangers. "today in the bay's" thom jensen is looking into the problem this morning. an alarming report, thom. >> reporter: it real areally is. it's pretty astounding. looked at 900 buildings and of those commercial buildings the apartment buildings and homes, of the 900 that were flagged since 2011 nearly 80% of those

never had inspections. this has been an issue of great concern since the ghostship fire where 36 people were killed. it exposed a problem with a lack of inspections. the aftermath of that, the mayor agreed to double the number of fire inspectors from 6 to 12 and make sure properties are up to code. the bay area news group discovered commercial buildings across the city have never been inspected. without those inspections the city has no way of whether flagged problems have been fixed and no power to make the owners pay for repairs. fire officials blame the lack of inspection inspections on faulty software program that's supposed to track those flagged property. we're live in oakland, thom jensen, "today in the bay." thom, thank you for that report. 5:33. live to our nation's capital amid a new concern for the gop health care bill. the congressional budget office,

for mild hypothermia. work on an important stretch of road in the east bay is expected to begin today. it is a section of the morgan territory road in the clayton area damaged in february following relentless rain there. the rural two-lane road connects with marsh creek road east of clayton. the damaged road will be closed off to cars, pedestrians, and bikes through the middle of october. if you're a local resident there will be an alternative access to the area. happening today bus certificaservice in san mateo county will talk about expanding service to san fran san fran and santa clara counties. the agency is thinking of adding service. today's community meeting is in san carlos. there's another meeting on saturday at the san jose flea market. good morning, folks. we're sill tracking this situation over on the peninsula. pete suratos, i believe, has

left the landscape vulnerable. a lot of questions this morning in minneapolis after a police officer shot and killed an australian woman who had called for help. >> we're going to show you images of the vigil the community held for her yesterday. 40-year-old justine diamond was shot on saturday night. according to reports out of minneapolis the woman had called for help after hearing some kind of noise in an alley next to her house. two police officers responded and a short time later one of the officers opened fire. body cameras on the police officers were not on at the time. the mayor of minneapolis wants to know why. >> i also have a lot of questions. i have a lot of questions about why the body cameras weren't on, questions that i hope and anticipate will be answered. >> you wouldn't associate that with a gun had shot in an alley. >> i pray this is a wake-up call for this community. >> you say this community, the investigation into that shooting continued this morning. we do know that map police officers started wearing body

cameras last year after the same community experienced a police officer shooting and killing castillo in the twin cities area. quick action by police and muni is credited with helping a woman nab a woman accused of kidnapping an infant. police say a woman took a 6-month-old baby from her father's car in the city's sunnyvale district and boarded a bus. police issued alerts. another muni driver who heard the alerts soon noticed a woman and a baby boarding his bus. he called poe who moved in to arrest the woman. the baby is safely is back with her family. >> what a blessing. bay area newspaper reports inspectors have frequently never followed up on fire dangers in oakland. the bay area news group looked at data dating back to 2011. the report says that over that time span firefighters referred 879 properties for follow-up

inspections because of fire code violations. almost 80% of the time those inspections never materialized including violations of more than 200 apartment buildings. the report also found it often took months or in some cases years for the bureau of fire prevention to ever conduct the follow-ups that did take place. thom jensen will have more on this in just an hour. other news in southern california firefighters continue to battle the so-called whittier fire. a local state of emergency as crews struggle to contain the flames. you see the orange taking over the skyline. firefighters are trying to slow the spread of the fire that has burned more than 18,000 acres. cal fire tweeting out this picture over the weekend. that fire is burning south of highway 154 w. this started a week ago. 16 homes so far burned. 30 other structures have, too. we have a food recall to

degrees today for the high temperature. 96 in danville and 89 degrees today in fremont and the peninsula. 78 degrees at half moon bay. in the mid-70s there. i was relaxing and saw many of you out there, too . it was quite packed. we're going to be up to 88 degrees in palo alto. in the miss district, 72. 94 today in santa rosa. it will still be very hot in the day where you'll need to wear something that will keep you nice and cool like shorts or bring the sunglasses because there will be a lot of sunshine again this afternoon and you'll definitely need that if you're heading out to the coliseum to watch the a's and we'll see those temperatures nice and comfortable for tailgating and then later on this evening in the mid-60s mostly clear skies. lower 60s by later on tonight and it will be even cooler at at&t park right on the other side of the bay. our temperatures will be at 61 degrees at first pitch and dropping back. i guess you can plan on a lot of

traffic, too. one place you can go is in the sierra. a lot of that snow is disappearing and temperatures will be in the mid to upper 70s over the next several days. looking at san francisco's forecast in the upper 60s today. down a few more degrees and we'll see the return of more fog over the next several days. it will be clear inland, our temperatures are taking a break from the extreme heat over the weekend. and mike has updates for both oakland and south san francisco. >> we'll start with south san francisco. the deadly crash investigation and pete was talking about how they hope to have the lanes open. just after the break all lanes have reopened. some folks might have chosen to use 280 as an alternate. the deadly crash investigation, trying to figure out the details there. all lanes have reopened out of san francisco.

jammed from oakland southbound passing by 7th and down to 23rd. you see recovery. it got two lanes open which was supposed to happen at 5:00. they should have all the rest of the lanes reopening after that. things should move smoothly. we have a little slowing for the tri-valley and reports of a crash as well. i'm not sure if we have our waze camera up. it does show the recovery. that will continue to change. back to you. 5:51 coming up. kids and teens in danger. the reason many foster children in northern california cannot find a place to stay. a holy site in jerusalem is back open after a deadly shoot-out last week. we reported on this attack on friday that left two policemen and three attackers dead. new metal detectors put in mace at the entrance.

our san francisco welcome back on your monday. that is a beautiful looking sun rise. alcatraz in the distrans. the transamerica pyramid there. off to a cool and foggy start along the coast. a major strain on the foster care system. more than 2,000 kids and teenagers in sacramento county need a loving and stable home. the county only has 235 families. that number is down from about 400 last year. many of the kids have been accused, neglected and experienced trauma. >> what we really need is for adults in our community who are willing to come forward and

provide loving, stable homes. state lawmakers are expected to vote on extending cap and trade program. some critics say the legislation does not do to stop pollution. the program puts a limit on c carbon emissions and requires polluters, mainly companies, to obtain permits to release greenhouse gases. it would require improvements. also happening today a woman accused of killing her friend after intentionally running her over with a car could enter a plea. she is due in court in just about three hours for a plea hearing. investigators say she hit and killed sally hernandez in campbell last month. that's after the two friends got into a fight. the two had also been drinking. a sinkhole that swallowed a boat and destroyed two homes in florida is no longer growing.

the hole is about 250 feet wide and 50 feet deep. several homeowners were able to return home. cleanup is expected to take several weeks. investigators aaron carter and his girlfriend were arrested. carter is accused of drunk driving and marijuana possession. his car was stopped on a highway northeast of atlanta. he is the younger brother of nick carter who was a member of the back street boys. changes for the a's as they made trades to the nationals. the a's got a left-handed pitcher and infielders. the last player on the team who was on all three of the a's 2012-2014 playoff teams. all right. take a look at this. this is video going viral this morning showing steph curry's dad dell curry jumping into lake
