up with us on a monday morning. we've got willie in for matt, good morning. >> good morning. good to be with you this week, savannah. if you're celebration, your social media is any indication, your interview with roger federer is going to be a hard-hitting cross-examination of the wimbledon champion. >> there may be a few lobs in that interview. we'll talk to roger federer in a moment. we have a lot to get to this morning. let's get to the developing story in arizona, where there are new flooding fears following that deadly flash flood over the weekend. nbc's miguel almaguer is in pason, arizona, with more. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. the locals say the water came out of nowhere, this entire area was cascading. it was only a fraction of what it was when it was rushing just over the weekend. >> oh my god it's coming right at us. >> reporter: the summer day on the verde river turned deadly in minutes. >> holy mackerel. >> reporter: an extended family of 14 hit by a sudden wave of

water. a river of dangerous debris, fueled by a monsoon, gushing into the cold spring swimming hole. >> the flash flood came through and washed 14 people away from the camp. >> reporter: nearly an inch of rain fell in just over an hour, turning what is normally a gentle creek into a raging river, carrying a catastrophic wall of water, mud and debris. >> they lost ten people. >> reporter: dissa alexander was hiking with friends when the flood hit. >> the water was calm and then literally like 20 seconds later, like no warning at all, the water just started rushing down. >> reporter: four people were rescued. nine others ranging in age from 2 to 60, were killed. many of the victims part of the garnica family. >> this is my brother. and his son. he has to be found. he has to be with them. >> reporter: the family is

overwhelmed. >> you can see him there. and he told us he was pulling my nephew. but he let him go and it's not his fault. >> reporter: this morning, first responders will be back on the ground and in the air, searching for miguel garnica, a young father. flash floods aren't uncommon in arizona this time of year. but this one is different. the rain hit ground scorched by a wildfire in june. the land stripped and bare. mud and debris becoming a torrent in one of the worst flash floods in arizona history. another look from our drone shows what the concern will be later on today. there is big worry with more monsoons coming in, this creek will once again become a raging river. the rescue effort will continue later on today. first responders will be in the air and on the ground searching for that one missing person.

back to you guys. >> our thoughts are with them. miguel, thank you very much. this morning a start of while on the hill, senate republicans are dealing with an unexpected new delay in their fight to replace obamacare. we'll talk about it all with former vice president al gore in a moment. but first, peter alexander is at the white house for us. peter, good morning. >> reporter: hey, willie. this week hitting his six-month mark as president. his personal attorney is in overdrive in the wake of the unrelenting headlines about donald trump jr. and the meeting with russians pitched as a download on dirt about hillary clinton. all of it taking a toll, now, on the president's standing. with the president back in washington, it's his legal team doing most of the talking. on donald trump jr.'s russia meeting. >> the meeting and what took place at the meeting based on all the information you just said is not a violation of any

law, statute or code. >> reporter: private lawyer jay sekulow arguing nothing about the meeting was improper. >> i wonder why the secret service if it was nefarious why did the secret service allow these people in? >> reporter: in a statement the secret service says donald trump jr. was not a were protectee in june 2016. mr. trump's outside counsel deflected when asked if any russia meetings are still undisclosed. >> none that i know of. i represent the president of the united states. but donald trump jr. said not in the context of formal meetings. >> reporter: top democrats remain skeptical. >> we can't accept anything don jr. says and of course we can't accept much of what the president says about this either because he has a similar record of not being forthcoming when it comes to russia. >> reporter: mr. trump's latest performance review unflattering. his approval rating falling to 36% the, lowest level of any president at this term since shortly after world war ii.

the president insisting, almost 40% is not bad at this time. again, trying to shift the focus to hillary clinton and accusing the media of distorting democracy. on the senate republicans bid for a health care bill, another delay. no repeal and replace vote this week. this time following unexpected surgery for senator john mccain who is recovering after having a blood clot removed above his left eye, but needs to stay in arizona. with the margin of error so slim, republican leaders are postponing the vote until his return. >> there are about eight to ten republican senators who have serious concerns about this bill. and so at the end of the day, i don't know whether it will pass. >> reporter: the bottom line, some republicans now worry the delay will make winning the task that much more harder, with opponents beginning to capitalize on this gaffe. there's another theme week. this time it's made in america. aides say they'll celebrate the american worker, and they will showcase the products

made state-by-state. and it allows them to talk about the rolling back of regulations. willie? >> all right, peter alexander at the white house, peter, thanks. former vice president al gore is with us now. he's out with a new documentary and book, "an convenient sequel." the follow-up to his oscar winning documentary "an inconvenient truth." we'll talk about that a bit later. first his take on the headlines out of washington. mr. vice president good to have you with us. >> good morning, willie. >> i couldn't help but notice as i was reading through your comments over the last several months that you were open-minded the day after donald trump was elected president. you went to trump tower and met with him in december to talk about climate change. you had hope he could be helpful on that issue. this week marks six months since the trump administration was sworn into office. how is he doing? >> well, our country is going through a challenging time, for sure. we have never had a president who has deliberately made decisions, the effect of which is to tear down america's

standing in the world. starting with his withdrawal from the paris agreement. the climate crisis is by far the most serious challenge we face, but he's also undermined our alliances, such as nato, and hurt our standing in the world in many ways. so it's going to be -- the months ahead will be a test for the american people. we've got to get through this. >> when you sat in that room with him in december at trump tower, did you feel in any way like you may have persuaded him on the issue of climate change? >> i respect the privacy of the conversations i've had with the president. i will say that he was certainly tent a tentative, they were pleasant exchanges. i hoped he would come to his senses on the paris agreement. but i was wrong. >> have you spoken to him since the withdrawal on june 1st? >> no, i have not. >> what about russia, mr. vice president? this is an issue that has been a dark cloud over the trump administration going back before he was elected. what are you specific concerns based on what you know about the

story? >> you have to start with the baseline facts. and sometimes get pushed into the background. the cia and all of the other u.s. intelligence organizations are unanimous in saying there was an unprecedented assault on our democracy, directed by russia, apparently ordered by vladimir putin. they illegally hacked into emails and other accounts and then weaponized that information in a very deliberate effort to try to turn the election toward donald trump. so, everything that's coming out now, i -- has to be seen in that context. and for me, i have so much confidence, as i think everybody does. and bob mueller, the independent counsel, it's great our country has a man like him that everybody can rely on, whatever they find out. i think people will have

confidence in him. >> as you say, there was russian interference in the election. the question is, did the trump campaign have hand in interference? we have e-mails from donald trump jr. himself that shows he walked into a meeting with the pretext of getting information on hillary clinton from a russian attorney. do you think that they worked with the russian government to put the thumb on the scales of that election? >> well, the disclosures are the worse we've seen in a while. the best is to wait for bob mueller. i wish john mccain a speedy recovery. he said there is another shoe dropping from the centipede. there's going to be problems ahead with all of the leaks from apparently inside the white house. >> you're one of two living people on this planet who can appreciate what it's like to win the popular vote and lose the

election. have you spoken to hillary clinton? >> i have. i suspect she will be fine. but our country, as i said earlier, will face some challenging months ahead. >> we have a lot more to talk about with former vice president, al gore. of drug deals that have gone bad. now to a wild and dangerous scene on an indiana lake. ten people thrown from a boat, including the driver. leading to a frantic attempt to stop that runaway boat. here's nbc's morgan radford on the story. >> reporter: terrifying moments on indiana's lake gauge, when a day of summer fun turned dangerous. a 21-foot motor boing out of control, with no one behind the wheel. >> like a tornado, you're not sure where it's going to go. >> reporter: investigators say it started with dominique eppinger operating the boat made a turn, throwing all ten people on the boat into the water. four of them injured. officers later arrested eppinger. >> it was coming closer and closer to shore. >> reporter: after the accident, the runaway boat was speeding close to the shore. until conservation officer, jake carlisle, and two deputies,

throw a rope around the boat propeller in an attempt to slow it down. the boat slams into a dock before crashing into the back of the patrol boat. the boat slowing down, enough for carlisle to jump onboard and regain control. >> you're not thinking. you're trying to get there in a safe manner as quick as possible. >> reporter: quick-thinking action that prevented a tragedy. for "today," morgan radford, nbc news. a delicate situation playing out in florida. a massive sinkhole swallowed two homes over the weekend. and two more dangerously close to the edge. nbc's kerry sanders is at land o'lakes, florida. >> reporter: if i had a better pitching arm, i would take a rock and throw it to the sinkhole.

as we see from above, it looks deceptively shallow. on the surface of the sinkhole, there's debris, like fiberglas and other materials. but it's 50 feet deep. and it continues to go down. that's why it's so deceptive. this morning, the terrifying sinkhole that swallowed two homes near tampa, as a community in shock. fortunately, officials say hasn't gotten bigger in the last day and a half. residents, breathing a sigh of relief, but still nervous. >> that's not 100% guaranteed. >> reporter: this morning, two homes are gone, destroyed. five others remain under mandatory evacuation. authorities say the residents can go back today to recover belongings. >> 30 minutes a time, maybe an hour to get the items and come back out. that's safe. >> reporter: the sinkhole is

massive. 225 feet in diameter and almost 50 feet deep. you can almost fit a 747 jumbojet down there. now filled with water and debris, it started filling up last friday. it began beneath a boat last friday. there's so many sinkholes in this part of florida, it's known as sinkhole alley. in 2013, a sinkhole opened up, taking this man who slept in his dead. and in this condo near disneyworld. officials say the residents were fleeing for their lives. the cleanup could take months. the emotional damage much longer. >> picture yourself leaving for work in the morning, like many americans do. and you come back and there's nothing left. >> reporter: the big question this morning is, has the sinkhole stopped growing? and geologists say they don't know. guys, back to you. >> that's a great look at the

there's not going to be any vote on the bill until john mccain recovers from his surgery, which he had on friday to remove a blood clot above his eye. and caitlyn jenner plans to make a decision to run for senate in the state of california, making aen announcement sunday during a radio interview. she says she plans to make the decision within the next six months or so. now to what will be one of this week's most watched events. o.j. simpson, who is serving time for a bungled las vegas robbery, is set to make his case for freedom to a nevada parole board. there's so much anticipation surrounding the hearing, it will be televised live. nbc's joe friar has had story. >> i'm sorry for what has happened. >> reporter: like he did four years ago, o.j. simpson will tell a parole board this thursday why he thinks he should be released from prison. >> i gave them my word i would try to be -- or would be the best prisoner they ever had here. and i think for the most part, i've kept my word on that. >> reporter: the hearing will be

broadcast live, taking place in two locations. simpson will be at the lovelock correctional center in nevada, appearing video conference before a patrol board in carson city. it will factor in age of first arrest, history of drug and alcohol abuse and disciplinary conduct over the past year. during his 2013 hearing, simpson was deemed a low risk and granted parole on some of his charges. at the time, he told commissioners he mopped floors, in the prison gym, coached sports teams and umpired games. >> i advise a lot of guys and i would like to feel i kept a lot of trouble from happening by getting involved in conflicts. and some of the individuals here have had. >> reporter: simpson has served nine years for robbing two sports memorabilia dealers at a las vegas hotel. >> if it doesn't fit, you must acquit. >> reporter: the hearing has no connection to the acquittal of the 1994 murders of ex-wife nicole brown and her friend, ron goldman.

one of the key figures was kato kaelin. simpson's house guest in 1994. we caught up with him over the weekend as he shot a commercial for a guest house rental company. >> i think for the crime he committed, he paid his dues. i think people think that, he paid over his due on that crime, and i think he will be paroled. >> reporter: if paroled, simpson could leave prison as early as october 1st. for today, joe friar, nbc news. >> we all remember the trial of the century, watching that on television. now the parole hearing of the century. >> and the d.a. who prosecuted o.j. simpson in this case said they believe they will get parole in this case because nine years is plenty of time for a robbery. that's one take anyway. >> that's interesting since that's the prosecutor. this morning, facebook founder, mark zuckerberg, has some reasons to smile. >> not only is his family beginning to grow, but his pockets are, too. nbc's thomas roberts is here with more on all of that. hey, thomas. good morning. >> good morning to you.

good monday morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. 7:56. we wake up to some bright sunshine and some quickly warming temperatures as we take a live look over san jose, hot and hazy. we're not seeing any fog as we look to twin peaks. high temperatures later today up to 72 degrees. some mid-90s had in the north bay coming down from the high heat yesterday. it's still going to be very hot in spots like concord, a high of 98 degrees expected today. in palo alto 88 degrees and 89 in san jose. morgan hill in the mid-90s. oakland today we'll see a high of 79 degrees. and over the next several days our temperatures will continue to cool off with some more fog in san francisco, inland areas from 96 degrees today to some upper 80s for the rest of the

>> vice president scogore, welc back. what has changed with the environment and the perception of the issue of climate change in that time? >> there's been two big changes, willie. the climate-related weather events have been more destructive and more common. in the u.s., we've had 11 once in a 1,000 year downpours in the last seven years. secondly, we have the solutions nop but there's so much hopefulness in this movie. people can be a part of solving the crisis by getting involved. use your voice on this issue. use your vote. use your choices. the truth is about the climate k crisis is still inconvenient. we need to be inconvenient for them. and actually push the right kind of policies. it creates more jobs in the process. >> i was watching the film. and you said over the last

decade, you've been frustrated. you said you viewed it as almost a personal fill you'ailure that hasn't been codone. what do you mean by that? >> the large polluters, trying to pull the wool over people's eyes. but people are seeing through it now because mother nature has joined the debate. it's been unanimous in the scientific community. but mother nature is pretty p r persuasi persuasive. i went to miami on a sunny day, no rain. and i saw fish from the ocean swimming in the streets because it was a high tide. >> why is it this issue has been so difficult to sink in with people? you had over the years, behind health care and terrorism and jobs and all the things people worry about. those numbers are gone up. 45% of people in a new gallup

pole believe that climate change is a big issue. why is it a tough road to ho? >> if you see a huturtle on a fence post, it didn't there get there by myself. they are trying to squeeze as much out of the business plan. it's a global issue. it's bigger than anything we've had to confront in the past. we quadruple the population. and the good news is, solar electricity and wind electricity, have come down so quickly in price. in many areas, it is cheaper. the batteries are coming down in price. solar jobs are growing in the u.s. 17-times faster than other jobs. we're seeing a surge in

employment in the renewable sector. and the things we need to solve the climate crisis are things that need to boost the economy, as well. there's a book coming out the same day next week "an inconvenient sequel: truth to power." you just touched down. there's people that watched "an inconvenient truth" and said, we will reach the point of no return. your critics say, we're 10, 11 years after that and the environment is not lost. it's getting wra inting warmer. we're doing okay. >> regrettably sun damage has been done. major sections of antarctica have passed a point beyond which some additional sea level rise is inevitable. and we're seeing incredible

downpours. this city was inundated during sandy, as the movie a decade ago predicted. and it happened years beforehand. but the other big change that i mention, is giving us a lot of hope. we just need to push these changes through. they'll create a better way of life for people across the u.s. and around the world. >> vice president, al gore. thank you very much. rescue. remind those who aren't familiar with the history. >> the british army were cut off. they were retreating from france. they end up on dunkirk, 400,000 men. and the german army surrounding them from the water. they were sitting ducks. this film is the shortest movie. and it's short so he can never leave people off of the hook. winston churchill hoped that 30,000 men would get back. 340,000 men were rescued in an effort to come get them. >> the word "dunkirk" evoked that ideal of fighting hard. christopher nolan, the director, you mentioned. i didn't think of it as a war

movie as something that is unfolding from three different places, air, land, sea. and three different time periods. >> yeah. >> as an actor, you're doing your role. but you have a wider perspective on the events. >> it's one of the geniuses that he can work in two time frames. and he keeps you engaged. it gets you emotionally involved, as well. the point he made was they were so young. in is 400,000 kids trying to get back. and the interweaving of it meant that when you were making it, in chris' style, you have the real thing. if i'm standing at the end of that, to lure ships. >> the mole is a long pier. >> exactly. the jets that were subject to tidal pressures, there are 1,000 guys behind me and there were boats out there. >> you were at dunkirk. this was on the beach.

>> a sense of what it would feel like, when you can stand there and see all of the people and home is just over there. and you can see it. it's very, very touching and tantalizing. it means that the kind of tension underneath the film and the adrenaline that he presents to it. and you can't help but feel. i don't know what you felt when you saw it. it's a white-knuckle ride. >> the nails are gone. and you are a very fine actor and we know you from your famous rolls but you're a director, as well. how does that approach a straight acting role? le the fact that you have that background as a director? how does that involve you in your performance? >> it's an incredible privilege to be an actor who directs. you get a chance to see how the director is directing. most actors don't. to see chris nolan was amazing. i learned about -- sports people

do this. they slow time down. they are so good, somehow they can control the logistical elements. i would see the chaos behind him. but he was handling the microbit, the next piece of performance from me. he knew how to use his time brilliantly. if you're watching another director at work, it was a privile privilege. from an acting point of view, you say thank you so much. >> they're good multitaskers. and you're starring in "murder on the orient express" soon. >> yes. >> thank you so much. famous. he has recipes. and you can take a whisky-themed cruise. you can indulge. >> when we think of cruises, we think of going to the caribbean and cruising around those islands. but there's other places you can go. >> the caribbean is one of the best. we're looking for freshness. now, cuba, a big, new december nation. it was hard to reach geographically. last year, lines were granted the right to sail to cuba. you can explore this culture. you want to stay around it. >> the idea is you get off, you spend the day and get back on. >> panama canal. nine years, $5.2 million. double the capacity of that canal. it means that larger ships can get there. it's a lovely bonus place in central america.
